<p>The thrills and spills, rough and tumble of elite competitive sports are all part of the attraction for those who pursue them professionally, as well as for spectators who cheer on from the sidelines or the couch. But what is becoming increasingly clear is that the very competitive nature of high-level contact sports can exact a severe price on players through the onset of debilitating brain damage.</p>

<p>This health issue, which is now more widely recognised, has hit home particularly in the likes of football, rugby, American football, ice hockey, boxing and wrestling, where repeated blows to the head and concussions may occur. Constant, crunching tackles are also a concern due to the whiplash-like effect of this impact reverberating through the body to the head. Many parents are discouraging their offspring from participating in sports where head injuries are likely.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Injury blows</h3>



<p>Respected BBC rugby commentator Chris Jones has suggested that this effect on brain health is an existential crisis for his sport. More than 300 retired rugby union players in England and Wales are pursuing legal proceedings over brain damage they say was sustained during their years in the game. They accuse the rugby authorities of being negligent and failing to protect them from permanent injury.</p>

<p>The number of claimants has risen rapidly since England World Cup winner Steve Thompson and other former players initiated the lawsuit in December 2020. They say part of their motivation in taking legal action is to save the game for future generations by securing new protective measures.</p>

<p>Failures levelled at rugby union’s world and national governing bodies include taking inadequate steps to inform, educate or warn players about the risks of permanent brain damage; conducting insufficient research into the effects of multiple concussive and subconcussive impacts on the brain and the prevention of permanent brain injury; and not reducing the amount of contact allowed in training or the number of matches per season.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Brain damage hits</h3>



<p>This ongoing litigation in the UK has been compared with a successful American football class-action lawsuit brought against the National Football League (NFL). In this case, more than 4,500 former players and their families sued the NFL for misleading them over the long-term dangers of concussions and head injuries. It ended in a 2013 settlement worth about US$765 million (HK$5.9 billion).</p>

<p>This lawsuit highlighted the prevalence in American football of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated blows to the head. Brain-related injury had been detected in boxers as early as 1928 when US doctor Harrison Martland linked signs of being ‘punch drunk’ – mild mental confusion and a staggering gait – with serial head punches. The condition was given the name dementia pugilistica.</p>

<p>More than 75 years later, in 2005, NFL hero Mike Webster became the first in his sport to be diagnosed with CTE; after retiring from the game, he suffered from dementia, cognitive impairment and mood changes, and brain damage was identified following his sudden death.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Post-mortem revelations</h3>



<p>Sadly, a number of American footballers have committed suicide in recent years, most likely triggered by the neurological effects of playing their sport. One of them, Dave Duerson, who took his own life in 2011, had asked for his brain to be donated to the Boston University School of Medicine; subsequent tests found CTE. The autopsy of Australian Rules footballer Heather Anderson, who struggled with depression and killed herself in 2022, also detected this incurable disease of the brain.</p>

<p>England’s Thompson, who suffers from early onset dementia, has talked of being put on suicide watch as a result of his illness – as have other former rugby players involved in the ongoing legal action.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Carrying on with concussion</h3>



<p>Ex-Wales international Alix Popham, who was diagnosed with probable CTE and early onset dementia in 2020 at the age of 40, shares in a BBC podcast some of his experiences of playing professional rugby and the lack of concern at the time about head injuries.</p>

<p>“Concussion was a bit of a joke; if somebody got knocked out or had ‘Bambi legs’ … players would have a laugh,” he says, explaining that teammates did not want to show any sign of weakness. “You were expected to chuck some water in your face and sniff some salts and just carry on. That was the way we did it.”</p>

<p>Popham believes most of his brain damage was inflicted during training because of the amount and length of contact required. He says these sessions might last as long as two hours and physios or doctors were not in attendance.</p>

<p>“My neurologists described subconcussive hits like a dripping tap on a piece of mud. [If it drips] once or twice, there will be no mark at the end of the day. But if it dripped for 14 years, there will be a big hole, and that is what is happening with every hit that a player is taking, not just to the head but to the body as well.”</p>

<p>Popham adds that some current players he has spoken to remain hesitant to quit the sport despite being advised that brain scans they have had are not “great”. It was perhaps this lack of clarity surrounding the issue that prompted him – along with his wife, Melanie Bramwell-Popham, and Sally Tucker, an NHS surgeon with a special interest in medical ethics and law – to set up Head for Change. Dedicated to pioneering positive change for brain health in sport, the charitable foundation provides a supportive space for sportspeople with neurodegenerative disease.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Heading for disaster</h3>



<p>These laudable goals cannot come a moment too soon. Tucker’s father is a former professional footballer who has been diagnosed with dementia, probably caused by repetitive head injury from heading the ball during his career. Research published in 2019 found that footballers were three and a half times more likely than the general population to die from a neurodegenerative disease.</p>

<p>Just last month two former Premier League football players shared their health concerns after years of heading a ball for a living. Former England defender Gary Pallister talked of how sickening migraines would blur his vision, affect his speech and leave him unable to train for two days. Along with many ex-players, he harbours fears for his future wellbeing.</p>

<p>As for Pallister’s ex-England colleague Steve Howey – who at 53 sometimes struggles to express himself and suffers from short-term memory loss – scans have revealed that his brain is in cognitive decline. The British charity Head Safe Football is campaigning for heading to be declared a national health issue, and the harmful skill is now being phased out at grassroots youth level.</p>

<p>Howey is one of a number of ex-professional players in England who are taking legal action against football’s governing bodies. The group includes the family of former 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who had advanced dementia in later life; he was diagnosed with CTE after his death in 2020.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">More severe for women?</h3>



<p>Sportswomen are feared to be at greater risk from concussion than their male counterparts. Research conducted by SidelinesDr in Australia and others suggest that women are not only more likely to sustain concussion in any given sport, but their symptoms tend to be more severe and their recovery time longer. Some medics have speculated that this is down to weaker neck muscles.</p>

<p>Other research in Australia found that 79 percent of jockeys have had at least one concussion during their horseracing career, and a quarter have suffered four or more.</p>

<p>Last year, World Rugby launched a call for applications to fund player welfare research projects into concussion, injury surveillance and prevention at all levels of the game. It also established a steering group to examine player welfare in the women’s sport. </p>

<p>Technology is playing a part to help limit head injuries. For instance, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US are working on a new protective foam that could revolutionise helmets in contact sports. Many sports governing bodies are also finally supplying guidelines, education and awareness about the long-term hazards of concussion and repeated blows to the head.</p>


Head in the game: While players get treatment for injuries, there has been little or no protection against brain damage


<p>It was not so many decades ago that alarming stories of a global population explosion were commonplace and books such as Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb prophesised doom. The latest insights based on annual figures published by the United Nations paint a different story, however. Population implosion is now front and centre of many countries’ concerns.</p>

<p>World Population Prospects 2024 outlines a predicted peak in the population on Earth within the current century at about 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s, up from 8.2 billion last year. Indeed, one in four people globally now lives in a country where numbers have already reached their highest point – a statistic embracing 63 countries and areas containing 28 per cent of the world’s population. Some analysts believe this could have damaging consequences for social and economic progress in the likes of China, Japan, South Korea and many European nations that are already experiencing severe demographic challenges.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fertility fall</h3>



<p>A major cause of population decline is the low birth rate across many countries, a trend that has existed for decades in some cases, especially in Europe. As early as 1970, demographers had noted total fertility rates in 19 countries had fallen below the replacement level of 2.1 births per women – the number required for a population to maintain a constant size without migration.</p>

<p>According to the latest UN estimates, women today bear one child fewer, on average, than they did three decades ago, and more than half of all countries and areas globally have fertility below the replacement level. Currently, the global fertility rate stands at 2.3 live births per woman, down from 3.3 births in 1990.</p>

<p>Reduced fertility generally occurs as countries become industrialised and experience a fall in mortality and a consequent population growth, a cycle that ends when the population implements fertility control. Leading demographers such as Tim Dyson note that fertility decline has liberated women from the domestic domain. As such, their lives have become increasingly similar to those lived by men, and marriage in the sense of a life-long commitment to have and rear children is seen as increasingly unattractive. In summary, demographic history suggests that as societies become richer, people tend to have fewer children.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ageing expensively</h3>



<p>Highlighting the pressing nature of declining population, the number of babies born in the European Union hit a record low in 2023. The 5.5 per cent drop from the previous year was the sharpest ever – a scenario expected to heap pressure on state finances due to the shrinking size of the working population, coupled with the rising cost of healthcare and pensions in an ageing population. According to demographic experts, the trend of lower birth rates in Europe since the mid-’60s has been exacerbated by fears over climate change, inflationary pressures, and political and job uncertainty.</p>

<p>Willem Adema, a Senior Economist at the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), notes that some young people have difficulties establishing themselves in the labour market, the housing market and “perhaps also in the dating market”. This comment will have particular resonance in Japan, which is experiencing a similar, if not worse, demographic timebomb than Europe.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dating decline</h3>



<p>Despite increased numbers of foreign residents, Japan’s total population has declined for 15 years in a row. In 2022, when the number of newborns fell below 800,000 for the first time since records began, the figure was 122.42 million and it is expected to drop further over the coming decades. The government has gone to the extraordinary lengths of consulting young people in a bid to understand their reasons for not marrying. It recently set up a Children and Families Agency to help young people find the love of their life through dating, matchmaking and other services.</p>

<p>According to a 2023 survey, more than 40 per cent of marriages in Japan were sexless, and fears are mounting that this apparent lack of sexual desire has percolated down to the younger population, further endangering the deteriorating birth rate. Izumi Tsuji, a Professor of the Sociology of Culture at Tokyo’s Chuo University, cited the many other distractions and hobbies of the younger generation as one reason for the decreasing value placed in dating. This latest revelation could compound concerns about a seeming unwillingness by Japanese people to marry, despite a government raft of child support packages.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Baby boost</h3>



<p>A reluctance to get married and falling birth rates in Hong Kong have also prompted much debate. Just 32,500 births were registered in 2022, the lowest number since records began more than 60 years ago; in 2019 that figure totalled 52,900. In one particularly inventive plan to address the problem, lawmaker Bill Tang Ka-piu suggested that the prominent display of baby pictures in government offices would spark procreation among the city’s civil servants.</p>

<p>Hong Kong’s declining birth rate has been attributed to factors including current restrictions on in vitro fertilisation (IVF), the prevalence of divorce and a lack of supportive measures for single parents. A HK$20,000 cash bonus introduced by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu for parents of new-born children appears to be helping reverse the trend: the number of births increased by 9.8 per cent year on year following the October 2023 launch of the handout.</p>

<p>Such concerns are being played out across much of the developed world. In the United States, the fertility rate is 2.08 children per woman, which is creating issues in this vast country. As people internally migrate to more prosperous areas, some places are being catapulted into ghost towns. Caught in a so-called death spiral, fewer locals then remain to pay local taxes, which exacerbates a worsening situation for those left behind.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">One no longer enough</h3>



<p>China famously introduced a one-child policy in 1979 in a bid to control a burgeoning population. Overpopulation was then viewed as a threat to economic growth and a harbinger of social and environmental problems. Beijing’s population control measures were successful in the sense that demographers suggest that by the year 2000 there were 300 million fewer people in the country than otherwise would have been the case.</p>

<p>The one-child policy was abandoned in 2016, and like many parts of the West, China is faced by major demographic challenges as its population ages and shrinks. In 2023, only about nine million births were recorded, the lowest since 1949, and the total number of inhabitants fell for the second consecutive year. With a fertility rate of about 1.0, far short of the 2.1 replacement level, the national government has rolled out numerous incentives for families with multiple children.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Benefits of youth</h3>



<p>According to Jeffrey Wu, Director of Hong Kong-based firm Mindworks Capital, how China navigates its demographic shift will define its economic future – it is that fundamental. To cope with the challenge, a huge boost in productivity will be needed, aided by technological innovation and capital and human capital investment. Automation and artificial intelligence, it is hoped, could potentially be a boon to productivity.</p>

<p>This is a noble aspiration because one potential effect of a nation having fewer young people is weaker innovation and growth. A 2021 study into patents by US research organisation NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research) highlighted that the youngest inventors were those most likely to produce novel, groundbreaking work that could raise productivity substantially.</p>

<p>Ultimately, many countries will use immigration to mitigate the demographic shortfall. As the UN suggests, those still with youthful populations but declining fertility have limited time to benefit economically from an increasing concentration of working-age citizens. In order to capitalise on this opportunity, investing in education, health and infrastructure, and implementing reforms to create jobs and improve government efficiency are essential.</p>

<p>Of course, population decline also has its benefits, particularly in reducing the pressure on global resources and the environment – something China’s President Xi Jinping, among others, has alluded to. This is a theme that will undoubtedly be taken up in the years to follow.</p>

<p>With her powerful vocals and dynamic performances, Cynthia Erivo has not only captivated audiences but also redefined what it means to be a leading light in the modern entertainment landscape. From the London stage to the Hollywood silver screen, her journey is nothing short of extraordinary.</p>

<p>Born on 8 January 1987, in Stockwell, South London, to Nigerian immigrants, Erivo faced challenges in childhood, particularly after her parents separated when she was still very young. Speaking about her upbringing, she reflects: “My mother has the strongest spirit I’ve ever encountered. She had to go through so much, and yet she still made sure that we had everything we needed, including love.” This early exposure to resilience undoubtedly shaped her identity as an artist.</p>

<p>She attended a Catholic girls’ school, where she began exploring her passion for performance. “The theatre was my escape,” she says. After graduating in 2010, she broke onto the scene with stage performances that showcased her vocal prowess and emotive range.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Setting the Stage</h3>



<p>Erivo’s rise to fame was rapid and remarkable, particularly her portrayal of Celie Harris in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple, when she stepped comfortably into shoes originally filled by Whoopi Goldberg. This performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album. “Part of me feels like I’ve always been meant to do this,” she notes, illustrating her profound connection to her craft.</p>

Hong Kong’s position as a major capital market is driving demand for people who can structure green bonds, advise on ESG investing, and navigate complex carbon-trading mechanisms,” he adds.</p>

Over the past few years, various international reports and corporate surveys have indicated a thinning pipeline of talent in Asia’s major financial hubs.</p>

<p>“Hong Kong, despite its many advantages, hasn’t been immune,” says Dorfling, indicating there is a mismatch between current skill sets in the city and the capabilities the market requires to remain globally competitive. “This shortage isn’t crippling, but it’s definitely a headwind – one that Hong Kong needs to address proactively to maintain its leadership status.”</p>

Another area of concern is locating digital marketing experts who can fuse analytics with creative strategies to target China’s evolving consumer base.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Perception problem</h3>



<p>One talented finance professional who has taken the plunge to settle in Hong Kong is Harry Bethwaite, an Investment Associate at Capital Union Investments. The Australian, a frequent traveller to the SAR for a decade, made his stay permanent in 2023 when a career opportunity arose. “Hong Kong provides a great lifestyle, easy access to the rest of Asia, competitive tax rates and an incredible blend of East-meets-West culture,” he says. “Singapore offers this to a certain degree and is catching up in many senses, but still isn’t quite to the [same] level.”</p>

<p>Though Bethwaite elected Hong Kong over Singapore, he does concede that it has issues to overcome, in particular negative perception overseas. “I think Hong Kong currently has a marketing issue. I vividly remember reading an article before arriving in Hong Kong with the headline ‘The expat exodus,’” he recalls.</p>

<p>Reading about thousands of expatriates who had left Hong Kong due to their experiences during the pandemic and their uncertainty about the changing landscape did prompt some initial misgivings about his decision to move here. “You rarely see any positive news abroad about Hong Kong, and without it, it’s genuinely hard to envision how life is here on a day-to-day basis or the benefits of the city,” he says.</p>

<p>According to Bethwaite, a common error made when weighing up the merits of a potential home is to judge it on a standalone basis rather than in comparison with other locales. “From my perspective when I decided to move to Hong Kong, I thought the benefits Asia offers in terms of growth opportunities, culture, cost of living and safety outweigh the likes of London and New York,” he explains.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Improving liveability</h3>



<p>Other professionals may be deterred by the high cost of housing or the intense work culture. Political commentator Alice Wu recently opined that the government should offer greater support to new arrivals in its attempts to plug the brain drain.</p>

<p>For Dorfling, the stakes are high – and multi-faceted – for Hong Kong’s future as a thriving and diverse international city. “Hong Kong’s capacity to attract and retain top talent isn’t just an economic imperative – it’s also a cultural one,” he states. “By drawing in professionals from all corners of the globe, Hong Kong enriches its cultural tapestry, keeps its business environment fertile, and positions itself as a catalyst for cross-pollination of ideas.”</p>

However, our prospective cover personality’s perspective on the situation sparkled with resilience. “I must admit Covid these days doesn’t bother me anymore,” says Chan, reflecting on the shared experience that has shaped many lives. “Gübelin has been hit hard by it too since the peak, but thankfully, especially due to my team and the people who continually support us, the collective effort is still there. Nothing is impossible if we really work together for the better.”</p>

<p>Winnie Chan’s journey began in Hong Kong, but her upbringing took her across the Pacific to Hawaii and California. Her father, garment manufacturer Star Chan, would “conduct market research through shopping” and this early exposure to the world of fashion ignited her passion for aesthetics. Her mother’s love of jewellery further deepened this fascination. “She would frequently visit different jewellery and I’d come along. <p>A degree in business administration with a focus on marketing from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles – a choice guided by her father’s desire for quality education and a solid path for his only daughter – equipped her with invaluable skills. “Throughout my experience representing luxury brands, I learned that it is crucial to use different marketing approaches to appeal to the targeted audience,” she says. This understanding of market dynamics has proven essential; she previously spent eight years as General Manager of watchmaker Roger Dubuis in Hong Kong, and now oversees Gübelin’s operations in the vibrant South East Asia market.Her pivotal career moment came in 2012 when the Gübelin family approached her to establish their first retail presence in Asia. “Oh my gosh, yes! Building the Gübelin Hong Kong Salon in 2013 was a significant step,” she exclaims.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bezels of Success</h3>



<p>What draws her to Gübelin is its unique position in the luxury market – the Swiss house, which began in 1854 as a Lucerne watchmaker, became a leader in gemmology, renowned for its authenticity and expertise. “Gübelin jewellery sources only the rarest and highest quality gemstones, accompanied by our Gemmological Reports [issued by the Gübelin Gem Lab],” she explains. This commitment to excellence stems from a 170-year heritage founded on the values of authenticity, expertise and inspiration. She believes that Gübelin differentiates itself through its family ownership, innovative spirit and holistic gem expertise. “No other house has a renowned gem lab, which sets us apart,” she asserts with a mindful smile.</p>

<p>Chan’s responsibilities extend beyond retail; she also leads the Gübelin Academy in Hong Kong, sharing knowledge of coloured gemstones. She comes armed with GIA certificates for Diamond and Coloured Stone Essentials and extensive training at the Gübelin Academy in Lucerne. “The academy allows me to improve my knowledge in gemmology continuously,&#8221; she says, underscoring her commitment to education and community engagement.</p>

<p>In an industry known for its challenges, she identifies sourcing high-quality coloured gems as a significant hurdle. “People want to know where the stones come from,” she notes, referencing Gübelin’s pioneering Provenance Proof initiative that enhances traceability in the gemstone market. The demand for bespoke services is also rising as clients seek emotional connections to their jewels.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dazzling Retail Landscape</h3>



<p>With changing consumer preferences, especially in Asia, Gübelin has adapted its strategies. “Consumers now want experiences, not just products,” she explains. This shift has led to innovations like the Gübelin Museum in Lucerne, where visitors can learn the history and artistry of coloured gemstones. Locally, they conduct ‘Gem Bite’ sessions to share quick insights about gems, fostering a deeper appreciation.</p>

<p>Chan reflects the ethos of Gübelin in her personal life. “Dr Eduard Josef Gübelin once said that the shapes, colours and light within gemstones create optical realities,” she shares, illustrating her belief in the intersection of beauty and knowledge. She strives to contribute to society using her unique talents, paralleling the company’s dedication to craftsmanship and education.</p>

<p>As a frequent traveller, she draws inspiration from different cultures to ensure Gübelin meets the diverse tastes of its clientele. “Europeans often prefer high-quality, classic designs, while Asians lean towards vibrant colours and striking elements,” she observes. This cultural insight informs her approach to customer engagement. At Gübelin, the philosophy “deeply inspired” is imbued with profound meaning. “Real beauty lies not just on the surface; it also stems from understanding and appreciating its qualities – both external and internal,” she explains of an ethos that permeates all aspects of the brand’s operations.</p>

<p>Following in her own family’s footsteps, Chan is actively involved with Yan Chai Hospital – Chan lu Seng Primary School. Her father is a former Chairman of the charitable hospital and she has participated in fundraising efforts and served on the School Management Committee. “I saw real needs there, and it moved me to contribute,” she says, espousing that luxury brands can enrich their communities by fostering cultural appreciation and education, and empowering individuals through knowledge.</p>

<p>She cannot be pigeonholed merely as a business leader; she is also a fashion aficionado who embodies the essence of luxury she promotes at Gübelin. As a lover of glitzy shoes and sophisticated attire, she curates her own wardrobe from high-end brands, as seen when we choose from the array of clothes and shoes laid out on her office conference table for the shoot.</p>

<p>Also resonating with pop culture, she is a fan of the celebrated TV series Sex and the City. “I relate to those characters; they represent powerful women adept at navigating life&#8217;s complexities, all while maintaining style and grace,” she articulates. Drawing parallels between herself and such fictional icons, she demonstrates how she balances glamour with substantive leadership in the luxury space.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Future Full of Sparkle</h3>



<p>As Wu-Tang Clan would say, “Protect Ya Neck” – and that’s precisely what Chan aims to do with Gübelin over the coming years. Envisioning a bright future for the brand in Greater China, her aspirations include “promoting high industry education standards through the Gübelin Academy, focusing on enriching learning experiences for aspiring professionals, and deepening our brand identity”. She also emphasises the importance of customer engagement and innovative retail experiences, believing that personal interactions and exclusivity will forge lasting connections with the region’s jewellery big spenders.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Accomplished architect who has completed landmark projects</h3>



<p><strong>William Lim</strong> has gained a fine reputation in the architectural profession by successfully working on some major architectural projects around the world. This includes the Marina Bay Sands project in Singapore, where he and his team were the interior designers for the public and hotel areas. Another landmark project he completed with the same team of architects was the Raffles City in Chongqing. His recent project sees him working on The Aperture clubhouse and lobby, a scheme developed by Hang Lung Properties Limited.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>What is CL3&#8217;s overall design concept and style for THE APERTURE Clubhouse?</strong></p>



<p>I think The Aperture has a really beautiful view looking out. And also, we looked at this neighbourhood and the environment and felt that this is really a family-friendly area. So, our concept is really based on family and providing a timeless elegance in the design.&nbsp;</p>



<p>When I do design, I always think of the user of the building. In this project, we wanted to cater to the needs and the enjoyment of a family.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We feel that to have a kind of homey feeling is very important, and to give it the sense of a timelessness. That&#8217;s where we have made certain reference back to some traditional elements like the wood mouldings and elements like the wooden floor to make you feel warmer. And also, it would be enjoyable as a family gathering place. This is really what inspired me to come up with the design.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For the clubhouse facilities’ design,&nbsp; I think probably my favourite one would be the gym; it&#8217;s a good setup and it has this very beautiful view looking out, which is quite rare for Hong Kong. It has a lot of light coming through, so I think in the morning it would be a wonderful place to exercise.</p>



<p>We separated the wellness and the gym to allow the health club and the gym to remain open for 24 hours. Part of the design is to build in the flexibility so you can actually access one part of the clubhouse without going through the main lobby of the clubhouse.</p>



<p>The children’s playroom is a fun area. We fantasized about this kind of tree house in the jungle surrounded by candy. That became an inspiration; when we designed the lighting, it&#8217;s all based on lollipops and candy bars. And it&#8217;s also very colourful and has a very beautiful view of the city.</p>



<p><strong>What do you consider to be the key features of THE APERTURE project? Which design element best showcases its unique characteristics?</strong></p>



<p>When we planned the overall circulation and the function, the key aspect we thought about was the family and what the members of the family would be able to do here. So actually, we cater to the whole family and to children of different ages. There&#8217;s a playroom and also a study area for the teenage years.</p>



<p>And then, of course, there are the social spaces, there&#8217;s the pool, the gym room and activities that really embrace the notion of family value.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We want to create a timeless elegance. A lot of the panelling goes back to a more traditional, European architecture that is very warming. That&#8217;s the kind of reference that we draw on for the design.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To me, the interior design should reflect the architecture. The architecture itself has a lot of curves. It probably has to do with our proximity to the water. I think that wavy pattern is very nice to use as an element and also to soften the urban scape, because I think there are a lot of more rectilinear structures around us.</p>



<p>And to use it for the interior, it also helps us to soften up the circulation. Again, back to the idea of being very family oriented, we also want the young children to be safe in this environment, so we tried to get rid of sharp corners.</p>



<p><strong>The main colours of THE APERTURE feature warm wood finishes paired with vibrant colours to enhance the visual effects of the clubhouse. Can you share the reasons for this colour combination?</strong></p>



<p>To create this feeling of warmth, we actually used a lot of environmentally engineered wood that is sustainable. It gives warmth to the project and the wood flooring is very pleasant and projects a very cozy atmosphere, and it’s sustainable.</p>



<p>We wanted this to be a joyful place for people to really enjoy, where you can probably spend the whole day at the clubhouse. There&#8217;s a lot of greenery around and a lot of open views. The idea is really to blend in and bring in the nature into part of the interior and using colour and the choice of materials, using the more natural material to link up with the exterior views.</p>



<p>The use of stone and wood gives us ample opportunity to make a timeless design and bring in elements like the fireplace, bringing in the luxury and the warmth. And also, in our choice of fabrics for the sort of soft furnishings, we added colour to be able to make you feel&nbsp; more relaxed. Again, we want it to feel like a home for the family.</p>



<p>In the lounge area, we have a fireplace and it has a stonewall feature and warm, comfortable seating, features which are all customized for this project. In this project, we actually incorporated a lot of warm tones, like the brownish maroon colour, which also echoes the architecture of the project.</p>



<p><strong>How do you balance functionality and aesthetics?&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p>I think my philosophy about design is that it has to address both. So, in terms of aesthetics, we brought in divisions and panelling of the wall panels, and also in our panel focal wall with the fireplace and the way we divided the panelling is very special to this area. At the reception we use a multi-coloured glass which is part of bringing joyfulness and warmth to the project.</p>



<p>Functionally everything has to work and has to be very flexible. So actually, from this kind of family lounge, we could actually connect back to the music karaoke room, and from the gym we could actually have 24-hour access. A lot of these flexibility and functional requirements were first addressed and then we thought of the aesthetics.</p>



<p>We use both a combination of task lighting and also some decorative lighting. And the decorative lighting tends to be more simple, more contemporary, quite elegant, and that works together with a more traditional wood panelling to create a contemporary feel with a classical reference.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We have a lot of high windows so you can bring in a lot of daylight. That saves on the use of lighting, and we use sustainable LED lighting and a lot of environmental engineered wood which has sustainable certificates to back up the source.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The transformative effects of machine learning and the onset of AI in healthcare systems around the world have huge implications for the improvement of our wellbeing. From better and faster diagnosis to understanding and managing symptoms to drug development, as well as the more efficient management of the systems themselves, the potential is almost endless.</p>

<p>AI has already woven itself into our lives through recommendations on social media as to what content we should click on and which adverts we see. AI systems utilise a user’s profile and demographic to make these decisions. Now, as its tools become increasingly applied to support healthcare, it may offer humanity more meaningful and lasting benefits.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Predictive power</h3>



<p>Artificial Intelligence is a statistical software using algorithms that can find patterns in large amounts of data, whether words, images, video, audio, code, or even DNA, and then make predictions based upon these. This is different from the early days of computers, which were essentially based on a list of instructions similar to how calculators operate. Modern AI or machine-learning systems – ML being a subset of AI – predict what is the most likely outcome for something. As such, there is no definitive answer, but the technology considers what should come next based upon what it has seen in the past.</p>

<p>This formula is the building block for ChatGPT, which has the ability to find relationships between different words to predict which one should come next in a sentence, and ultimately compose advanced academic reports. The implication of this skill in making sense of big data from disparate sources is now becoming increasingly apparent in the provision of healthcare as medical research increasingly moves from code to clinic.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Success in sight</h3>



<p>In ophthalmology, for example, AI is being used to prevent blindness. Pearse Keane, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in the UK who specialises in the treatment of retinal disease and age-related macular degeneration, first considered the potential of artificial intelligence because patients were experiencing delays in getting an appointment with a doctor. Some, in critical cases, went blind as a result. He thought applying an AI system to data gleaned from retinal scans would help identify those whose sight was most under threat and enable them to receive attention within a few days rather than weeks or months.</p>

<p>He approached the co-founders of AI research laboratory DeepMind. “I told them we were doing 1,000 retinal scans per day at Moorfields and can we work together to develop an AI system to prevent blindness,” he relates in a BBC podcast. “The rest is history.”</p>

<p>Researchers at Moorfields shared about one million anonymised, historical scans with DeepMind and, essentially, trained AI algorithms to recognise eye disease. The performance of this powerful AI technology was “on par with world-leading experts from Moorfields for more than 50 different retinal diseases,” says Keane.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Window to the body</h3>



<p>Interestingly, the retinal scans are also being considered for a new field called oculomics. The idea of using the eye as a window to the rest of the body to detect health conditions has been postulated for over a century. However, the ability to crunch and analyse vast amounts of data at speed has spawned a potential breakthrough. Keane enthuses: “What has been really exciting in the last four or five years is this idea that if you combine advanced retinal imaging with big data, with the latest advances in AI, it turns out that you can actually potentially predict Parkinson’s disease or dementia, or predict the risk of heart attack or stroke.”</p>

<p>Although Keane is hopeful this technology will be widely available on an open-source basis within two or three years, he cautions: “But the caveat to that is we are still at the proof of concept; we are still pushing research-paper stage.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cancer detection tools</h3>



<p>The life-saving potential of software trained to analyse millions and millions of scans was recently highlighted by an AI system called Mia used by the NHS in Scotland to detect signs of breast cancer that may be indiscernible to the human eye. Mia analysed the mammograms of more than 10,000 women and was able to flag all those with cancer, as well as an extra 11 the doctors did not identify. This ability to detect cancer at a much earlier stage could make the difference between survival and a potential early death, given that tumours can grow and spread very quickly.</p>

<p>Here in Hong Kong, researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently developed AI-based tools to detect 30 types of cancers and diseases. The university has developed four models which they believe are poised to transform the medical and healthcare fields, surpassing existing models due to their foundation on extensive data sets and novel machine-training strategies. Their breast-cancer diagnostic tool is said to achieve accuracy levels comparable to radiologists with five or more years of experience.</p>

<p>Another tool is poised to act like a “medical GPT”, with the ability to answer questions, generate medical reports, and provide initial diagnoses based on medical images. A further tool called XAIM (Explainable AI) is designed to enhance healthcare professionals’ confidence in adopting AI by explaining how medical AI models reach their decisions. Researchers at the university suggest that while many AI models offer high accuracy, they often lack transparency, and this leads to scepticism about their adoption.</p>

<p>“XAIM addresses this by providing visual and textual explanations of the models,” says a spokesperson for HKUST, which has previously developed an AI model predicting the prognosis of brain-tumour patients and a highly accurate blood test for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Big data doubts</h3>



<p>For sceptics, one of the issues with using AI in healthcare is that it relies on a vast data set and its output will necessarily reflect that data set and also any errors or specific biases it contains. For instance, marginalised populations who do not access healthcare will not be reflected in the data and the results will not therefore serve the population as a whole. Another concern is that models are perceived as having a “non-deterministic” nature, meaning they will not always respond in the same way and make the same predictions to the same stimuli. Privacy of personal data has also been flagged as an issue.</p>

<p>There is also the question of accountability. For instance, if an AI model is used to determine which patient receives a heart transplant and which does not, then who would be accountable if that judgment is subsequently proved to be wrong?</p>

<p>Dr Jessica Morley, a Postdoctoral Researcher at Yale University’s Digital Ethics Centre, believes current AI modelling lacks transparency, especially given the complexity of its development. She tells the BBC podcast this is the crux of the AI conundrum: “If we have come to the point where something the algorithm is making a “wrong” decision – where did the wrongness start? Is it who collected the data? Is it who curated it? So how did you decide what was cleaned and what was not? Is it who designed the model or who evaluated the model? Is it who interpreted the model?”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">AI concerns and hopes</h3>



<p>These sorts of ethical considerations are behind recent calls in Hong Kong for guardrails and protection to be put in place before the widespread rollout of AI in healthcare and other sectors, such as finance.</p>

<p>However, many in healthcare have high hopes that AI can also reap efficiency savings and increase productivity. Tools such as AI-backed voice transcriptions, for instance, could save a huge amount of time and cost for a health system. In 2022, a McKinsey report suggested using AI to predict diagnostics outcomes and support clinical decisions could create US$5 billion in economic value in China. Many poorer nations across Africa could also derive immense benefits from AI in healthcare.</p>
