Nestled in Pearl Court in the calm sanctuary of Kowloon Tong’s Beacon Hill, their newly remodelled apartment now serves as both an elegant gallery and a refined home.</p>



<p>Having recently stepped back from their professional obligations, the couple’s intent was to devote more energy to their passion for fine art. They engaged interior designers Alain Wong and Ada Cheung of Comodo Interior and Furniture Design to shape a space that echoed their artistic sensibilities and practical requirements. The result? A genteel suburbanity permeates every artfully crafted nook and ingeniously integrated cranny of the home, nestled amid the beguiling calm of Beacon Hill.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Haven of Balance</h3>



<p>Crossing the threshold reveals an atmosphere of discreet refinement. Spanning over 1,800 square feet, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence includes a study, open-plan living and dining room, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Storage areas are plentiful, designed to safeguard not only household necessities but also artistic treasures accumulated over decades.</p>

<p>To fulfill their curatorial ambitions, the design brief called for a space that could function equally as a luxurious residence, gallery, and secure archive. Wide aisles between the shared spaces [give] the couple’s cherished acquisitions room to hang and be admired and contemplated in the manner they deserve. This openness fosters leisurely exploration while accentuating each piece’s presence.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Refined Functionality</h3>



<p>Practicality was paramount—especially given the owners’ advancing years. The home’s smart configuration serves this demographic gracefully, with amenities and spatial adjustments aligned to the couple’s lifestyle. A guest room was sacrificed to make way for integrated, automated shelving systems—an essential concession for aging art lovers seeking both convenience and security.</p>



<p>In another deft touch, part of the original living room was repurposed into a second bedroom. Rather than compromising the communal spirit, this recalibration fostered a more intimate, welcoming environment. Structural supports that could have disrupted the aesthetic were recessed into bespoke wardrobes, reflecting the designers’ attention to both utility and finesse.</p>

<p>Elsewhere in the apartment, nooks and recesses have been artfully utilized—transformed into curated displays or bookshelf alcoves. These clever interventions optimize available space without appearing cluttered, echoing the homeowners’ devotion to presenting art with intention and respect.</p>

<p>The bedrooms were tailored to each resident’s preference. Headboards in light grey fabric and veneer add a sense of composure and warmth. Wall coverings in textured wood tones, highlighted by bronze and steel accents, enrich the setting with understated opulence.</p>

It’s the city-dweller’s answer to an idyllic al-fresco bathroom in Bali without the worry of plunging winter temperatures or nosy neighbours.</p>

<p>Thick, opaque glass tiles offer privacy from the outside world, as well as a blurred hint of the greenery beyond. Although the lack of in-shower storage may deter those requiring several bottles for cleansing, the uncluttered lines are undeniably soothing.</p>

<p>On the first floor is a sitting room, with sofa and chairs placed around a large, circular rug on the parquet floor. In perfect symmetry, the carpet traces the lines of the round false ceiling from which a round chandelier hangs. Two marble coffee tables, also round in shape, stand in the centre, adding to the balanced play of shapes and textures.</p>

A large walk-in wardrobe provides ample storage for clothing and accessories, and a spacious en-suite bathroom boasts a freestanding tub, separate shower and double vanity unit.</p>

<p>Perched on a verdant hillside in Tateyama, Japan, overlooking Toyama Bay, is a house boasting breathtaking views, which was designed to rejuvenate the spirits of its city-dwelling owners when they visit on the weekends. The stunning landscape and ever-changing ocean vistas inspired the interior design, which at every single opportunity maximises the visual impact of the great outdoors.</p>

<p>The internal architectural configuration, conceived by Ryoko Ogoshi and her award-winning Tokyo-based studio, Ron Design, ensures that all the key rooms – an open-plan ground floor and two bedrooms upstairs – are oriented towards the uninterrupted sea view. Calm, warm interiors provide a luxurious haven for relaxation, perfect for unwinding on rainy days when weather interrupts watersports or intimate evenings beside the vast contemporary fireplace.</p>

It is built predominately from wood in an eco-friendly mindset reflected by the use of natural materials, energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible construction methods. Thus, the design team has delivered a retreat that not only revives the owners’ spirits but also contributes to the wellbeing of the planet.</p>

<p>One of the most striking aspects of this house is its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. At the heart of this spectacular home – for holidays or perhaps retirement – is the lounge, which boasts a wide seaview terrace, providing a seamless integration of the indoors with the outdoors.</p>

<p>The gourmet kitchen on the west side of the residence leads to a splendid roofed patio and barbecue deck, where a snooker table awaits for friends or family to enjoy some game time while meals are prepared. The outdoor spaces are furnished with comfortable sofas and sun loungers sheltered by retractable shades. A choice of dining areas – indoors or out – adjoins the kitchen and barbecue deck. The two are separated by a glass window affording beautiful vistas of the seascape just metres away.</p>

<p>A multimedia room is positioned on the eastern side of the villa where the occupants – if they aren’t glued to the big screen – can enjoy views of the lush green gardens in front of the house. Decoration is kept minimal and the abundance of white that dresses the walls and upholstery makes the living spaces seem even brighter since the natural light bounces off them as it floods in through the windows and skylights.</p>

<p>Travertine-tile flooring has been utilised throughout the living areas and pool decks, while a unique wood-like tile covers the upper floors for convenient maintenance. Aesthetics fuse with practicality here, as the material selection must take account of the humid climate.</p>

<p>Each perfectly proportioned bedroom has a private ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed, and beautiful views over the water. Two bedrooms are situated on the ground floor with another three spacious chambers on the upper floor, enough to accommodate a large gathering of house guests. The colour palette here is deliberately calming, with soothing shades of blue, green, white and sandy neutrals that nod to the ocean hues.</p>

This gallery connects to the upstairs bedrooms that have been carefully designed so that all three have access to breathtaking ocean views. The two flanking the hall have a longer layout, extending into balconies. All the bedrooms have similar, harmonious fittings and decoration, with large paintings or tapestries hanging above the headboards and a sitting area beside the windows.</p>

<p>These are indeed serene retreats that embody the peacefulness of a far-flung isle. Soft, billowy curtains in white linen filter the glare of the sunlight while the white walls radiate its joyful warmth. Plush rugs in natural fibres add comforting texture to the floors. The beds are resplendent in crisp white sheets with patterned pillows and cushions.</p>

<p>Conceived by Seattle- and New York-based Allison Lind Interiors, the lakehouse is a masterclass in rustic-chic design, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Sprawling over one level, it boasts breathtaking views of the verdant landscape. The exterior is clad in weathered wood, with large windows and sliding glass doors that allow the beauty of the outdoors to flood in.</p>

<p>The entrance hall is a sensory experience transitioning from outside to in. Clad in textured, grooved wood, it is flanked by a large antique mirror facing a beautiful work of art. The printed rug in front of the door matches the pattern on the walls, while a chandelier brightens this welcoming space.</p>

Balancing the dark and bright shades, an immaculate white carpet complements the sofa, while a round golden coffee table adds to the regal mood of the living space.</p>

<p>Seating on the other side of the room is centred around a rectangular glass-clad coffee table, but the focal point is a magnificent modern fireplace, where the family can gather in the winter for warmth and comfort. Two adjacent plush sofas rest on a richly patterned red Turkish carpet. Large glass windows, which open onto a patio, allow in abundant light and offer views of the green outdoors.</p>

<p>Since the children’s bedrooms are designed in accordance with their personalities, they offer appealing character stories. One has a gold canopy bed flanked by two carved-wood side tables. A plush purple sofa at one side of the room offers a cosy nook to indulge in books and music while enjoying the scenery outside. Its large floral carpet makes the room feel fresh and lively like the outdoors.</p>

<p>The elder daughter’s bedroom is similarly bright and spacious. With a beaded hanging light above the bed, dream-catchers dotted around, and a huge painting of horses on the wall above behind the headboard, it has a free-spirited charm. A rattan egg swing drops from the ceiling beside a window that offers a pretty view of the lake.</p>

<p>Following in this artistic tradition, our featured home this month is a modern, lofty perch situated above the Museum of Modern Art in one of New York’s most exclusive and stylish locales. The development at 53 West 53rd Street in downtown Manhattan is not yet completed, but it is on track to become one of New York’s ritziest residences. Once finished, the 1,050-foot-high tower will reshape the city’s skyline and become an attraction in its own right.</p>

<p>The tower – dubbed 53W53 – was designed by acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel. His striking design for the building’s exterior, referred to in the architectural trade as a diagrid (a portmanteau of diagonal grids), is somewhat akin to an abstract sculpture – making it an appropriate home for the three floors of museum gallery space that can be found inside. The building’s intriguing and imposing look beckons the would-be homeowner to explore the world within.</p>

<p>Nouvel is a highly credentialed architect and designer, and is worthy of a project of such ambitious scope. A winner of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, his diverse body of work is as impressive as it is varied. His past projects have included museums, concert halls, luxury residences and cultural commissions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Fondation Cartier in Paris.</p>

State of Mind: Musicians have long sung the praises of the Big Apple. Here’s a home worthy of the hype


<p>A beautiful home has all the more character if it is situated in a picturesque neighbourhood. This elaborately stylish 800-square-foot apartment in Oliwa, a historic suburb of Gdańsk in Poland, certainly embodies the spirit of its surrounding landscape. Remodelled in striking combinations of dark teal green, grey stone and warm wood by design firm Raca Architekci, it involved a year of planning and renovation. Michal Raca, the main designer and founder of the firm, worked closely with his client to materialize her vision of a nature-inspired home. </p>

<p>A sense of grandeur is immediate as you enter the flat. The absence of an entrance hall increases the interior space and imparts volume, imbuing comfort from the moment you step through the door. A tall elliptical mirror framed in gold brass is strategically placed so you can check your appearance before leaving or entering, while a black veneer bench with an upholstered seat is a convenient spot for slipping shoes on or off. <p>A polished terrazzo floor serves as a prelude to the wooden flooring within. A brass wall lamp is placed as a stylish ornament, its adjustable lighting setting the mood of the space. The rich teal hues of the feature walls act as a sophisticated backdrop for contemporary furniture. The designer has deliberately used mirrors of different shapes and sizes to make the apartment look more spacious. Large black and gold pots with large plants can be found in different corners of the house, flaunting the green thumb of the owner and her love for nature. </p>

<p>The open kitchen is the heart of the apartment, linking the living and dining areas. Not the keenest of cooks, the homeowner initially envisaged a small, compact kitchen, but one of the layouts proposed by studio founder Michal Raca offered a larger layout with a kitchen island. Selecting this option has proved a joy; it has become her favorite space, allowing her to host friends and discover delightful new recipes. </p>

<p>The island has a bold countertop of bardiglio marble from Spain, which is paired with other expanses of grey to emphasize the beauty of the stone. Its complementary brass accessories look like jewels adjoining the teal green dining area.  A round gold-rimmed mirror serves as a backdrop to the dining table balancing the dark tones of teal allowing more natural light to be reflected from the walls. Two beautiful round pendant lights hang above the kitchen island while a similar horizontal pendant light illuminates the dining space. </p>

<p>The upholstery is set to be the same shade as the walls, whether for curtains, the bed’s velvet headboard or the fabric of armchairs. A wall of windows spanning the living and dining areas offers panoramic views of the Baltic port city’s old town, where rows of red roofs reach out to the horizon. The apertures allow abundant light to fill the whole space and are embellished with heavy velour dark green curtains in a décor reminiscent of an opera house. The velour finish of the walls reduces dazzling reflections as the sunlight streams in.</p>

<p>A cosy space for unwinding, the master bedroom is dressed in two contrasting materials, plush velour panels above the veneer. Behind the bed, an upholstered headrest built into the lower part of the wall adds optimum comfort. The different textured panels are separated by a strip of bardiglio marble underlined in black, echoing the theme of the living quarters. The eye-catching originality of this design is enhanced by beautiful golden lamps that provide subtle contrast. </p>

<p>Following Raca’s extensive renovations, the bedroom and en-suite bathroom have become one coherent space, framed by large sloping windows at one end. The master suite’s aesthetic value has been further elevated by the addition of a glass wall partition for easy access between the two areas. It is a functional solution that not only allows natural light to flow into the bathroom – unusual in apartment blocks these days – but also gives the appearance of a more spacious bedroom. For the sake of privacy, a curtain can be drawn across the divide and bestows the ambience of a luxury spa. </p>

Teal Appeal: Rich notes of blue-green and grey refresh a stylish home in Poland where music fills one room


<p>Tucked away in the rolling Russian countryside lies a spectacular home that embodies classic refinement and contemporary finesse. Extending slightly over 2,000 square feet, this beautiful abode is situated in the picturesque village of Zhukovka, just outside Moscow. It is a testament to the nation’s rich cultural heritage and its owners’ fondness for grandeur.</p>

<p>The architects at Moscow design studio Archpoint achieved this feat through a thoughtfully conceived layout by incorporating calming colours; expensive natural materials like marble, stone and wood; sophisticated furniture from renowned brands including IPE Cavalli and Fendi; and elegant chandeliers.</p>

<p>Its imposing façade is adorned with intricate carvings and ornate details that seem to dance across the exterior walls. Inside, a spacious foyer extends into a sweeping staircase of black and white Dalmatian marble leading to the upper floor. The two storeys are separated by distinct themes. On the ground floor, the designers use dark, soothing hues to contrast with a dramatic white and grey backdrop for the fireplace, where Lithos Design light stone panels form a striking three-dimensional effect. The upper floor is dominated by two palatial bedrooms distinguished by vivid colour tones.</p>

One of the home’s outstanding features is its seamless integration with the outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors lead to expansive decks, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.</p>

<p>The heart of the home is the extensive open-plan living room, with its soaring, well-illuminated ceiling and windows that frame the garden and let in plenty of natural light. Easy access to the patio enables an immediate, harmonious transition from indoors to out. The garden landscaping juxtaposes trimmed shrubs and tall trees.</p>

<p>In the centre of the room, a large plush velvet sofa sits under a shower of crystal glass dangling from the chandelier. It faces the majestic stone fireplace which has been carved into the marble feature wall. This is the perfect spot for cosying up on a round chaise longue in front of the fire during chilly winter evenings. In an unconventional but elegant style, the television is suspended on a separate stand rather than positioned on the feature wall, making it easier to move the angle of the screen when hosting large gatherings.</p>

<p>The upstairs bedrooms are lavish, serene retreats with gorgeous bedding and soft lighting. Here, too, chandeliers contribute to the warm luxury of the décor. The master suite has an oceanic theme, contrasting the turquoise and deep blue of the upholstery, panelling and drapes with the golden ‘liquid-metal’ coating that etches the walls and furniture. The chamber’s polygonal shape makes it a multipurpose space with a TV wall, sofa and armchair. The en-suite bathroom has a deluxe soaking tub and separate shower, perfect for unwinding after a long day. The other bedroom exudes an earthier theme, combining beige enamel and a rich palette of American walnut. It is an unusually long room, separated by a TV wall facing the bed, with a walk-in closet and desk beyond. Both bedrooms are adjoined by bathrooms decorated in accordance with the colour scheme – light and dark. Mirrors from IPE Cavalli have graceful frames, and the designers have provided several options for lighting – from pendant globes to spotlighting under the sink and bathtub.</p>

<p>The furniture in both rooms was chosen to match the interior colours, with walls and headboards highlighted as accents. In the turquoise room, the feature wall behind the bed is framed by natural Lithos marble with an eye-catching illuminated pattern; in the brown bedroom, the wall plastering is accentuated by an undulating relief carving. Special attention has been paid to the wardrobes, which are also dressed in the colours introduced in the bedrooms. There are functional cabinets made by local craftspeople, as well as chests of drawers and an IPE Cavalli dressing table.</p>

Grounded in Grandeur: Traditional motifs and modern comforts cohabit in a Russian home of rich colour and countless chandeliers


<p>Heralding change and a joyful celebration of life, the spring season has inspired countless poets and artists through the centuries. Taking inspiration from its ephemeral beauty, award-winning Taipei-based interior design firm L’atelier Fantasia imagines a 3,000-square-foot duplex residence as ‘The first drizzle of spring’. Idan Chiang, the studio’s founder, emphasises the relationship between people and their surroundings in this enchanting sanctuary created for a couple and their two children. </p>

<p>The residential layout is a thoughtful choreography of privacy and interaction, with rooms positioned at the four corners of the home for the best views of the outdoors. This arrangement fosters familial intimacy while respecting individual solitude in a space where luxury, elegance and playfulness intersect. <p>Upon entering, you are greeted by a spacious living room with a neutral colour palette of soft grey walls, cream-coloured trim and plush velour floors. The space is illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows, framed by whisper-thin silk curtains and affording breathtaking views of the Taipei skyline. Exuding opulence and refinement, the room envelopes occupants in a sense of warmth and comfort, surrounded by plush furnishings and rich textures.</p>

<p>The lounge ceiling is accentuated at various points and the lighting is kept minimal, giving an elegant finish to the space. A large sectional sofa and two designer armchairs face the TV wall, complemented by circular coffee tables. The walls are adorned with a selection of artworks, including a stunning piece of traditional Taiwanese calligraphy, a modern abstract painting and compelling prints by local photographers. A grand piano sits at one end of the room, reflecting the owners’ taste in music as well as art. </p>

<p>Adjacent to the living room, the kitchen is a symphony of clean lines, minimal ornamentation and top-of-the-line appliances. Crisp white cabinets, gleaming stainless-steel surfaces, and a spacious island with a built-in sink create a functional and stylish space perfect for culinary creativity. Two skylights brighten the room and green velvet dining chairs at the counter stand out amid a wash of white, bringing warmth to this space for enjoying casual family meals. </p>

<p>A huge lazy Susan table occupies this end of the lounge, forming a dining area for hosting guests and larger gatherings. Intricate blue-crystal pendants from the chandelier above match the blue dining chairs. Every detail, from the carefully chosen materials to the meticulously curated art, contributes to a harmonious balance of style, comfort and functionality. This area’s focal point is a breathtaking floor-to-ceiling window, offering a panoramic vista of the city skyline and flooding the space with natural light.</p>

<p>Upstairs is a second, cosy living room for family reunions and children’s play dates. The space is a canvas of vibrant early spring colours, woven with warmth and finesse. A tea-rose-pink faux-fur sofa on a large, round grey area rug makes the room all the more alluring. </p>

The master bedroom boasts an expansive walk-in closet with bespoke shelving, and a spa-like en-suite featuring rainfall showerhead, heated floors and a double vanity. The dedication to aesthetic harmony extends to these private quarters: the classical master bathroom with its interlaced floor tiling and custom-made Normandy shutters exudes the luxury of a boutique hotel. </p>

Throughout the home, the environmentally considerate use of local marble and expansive windows reflect a commitment to sustainable luxury. Quality and craftsmanship take centre stage, with top-tier fabrics and artisanal imported furniture. The design philosophy marries material texture, spatial scale and artistic deconstruction, resulting in a collage of elements that sing in harmony. </p>

<p>Strategic colour-hopping seen in vivid furniture set against pastel backgrounds imbues different areas with distinct personalities, allowing family members to find a bespoke nook for repose. Every detail contributes to a harmonious balance of style, comfort and functionality.</p>
