<p>At first glance, this sprawling property in Provo Canyon, Utah, might be mistaken for a natural extension of the majestic Wasatch Mountains that surround it and enter through a plethora of oversized circular windows. Nestled within some 120,000 square metres (30 acres) of rugged terrain about 72 kilometres (45 miles) south of Salt Lake City, the house appears to have emerged organically from the arid landscape, as if the mountains themselves had shaped it. This illusion of harmony with nature is no accident – it’s the result of meticulous planning, visionary design and engineering feats that quite literally moved mountains.</p>

<p>Building a modern home with full amenities in such a remote and rugged location required a team of professionals endowed with ingenuity, perseverance and a deep respect for the land. Magleby Construction, a Utah firm which has twice been recognised as Custom Builder of the Year by the US Association of Home Builders, took on the task with bold ambition. The first step was to carve out a road through the mountains to bring water and utilities to the site. This wild, western edge of the Rocky Mountains is not easily tamed, and transforming the locale into a liveable sanctuary was a monumental undertaking that set the tone for the rest of the build.</p>

<p>Rising to the challenge, Salt Lake City architect Michael Upwall designed a home that would not merely sit on the land but grow from it. Deeply influenced by the American Craftsman movement of the late 19th century emphasising functionality, simplicity and handcrafting, he envisaged the property as a natural extension of its environment, blending seamlessly with the terrain and climate. This philosophy guided every aspect of the project, from the initial sketches to the final touches.</p>

<p>To complement Upwall’s vision, award-winning landscape-architecture firm ArcSitio was brought in to shape the outdoor spaces. Their approach was equally rooted in ecological sensitivity. Rather than imposing artificial elements onto the land, they sought to enhance and celebrate its existing features. Natural springs were tapped to create serene ponds, which serve as chemical-free swimming or plunge pools that are sustainably purified using aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria and microbes.</p>

<p>The result is a landscape that feels untouched yet thoughtfully curated – a place where homeowners and guests can immerse themselves in nature without sacrificing comfort. But achieving this balance was anything but simple. The planning and development spanned four years and spawned a home of epic proportions: 22,500 square feet of living space that includes six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a grand two-storey foyer with a floating staircase, a formal dining room, a two-level library and a state-of-the-art home theatre.</p>

<p>For those who embrace both work and play, the residence offers an array of amenities designed to entertain and invigorate. Among the indoor attractions are racquetball, volleyball and half-basketball courts, a gym, sauna, steam room, HD golf simulator and two four-car garages – one for everyday vehicles and another dedicated to sports cars. Perhaps most striking is the 18-metre-high (60-foot) indoor rock-climbing tower, a bold centrepiece that speaks to the adventurous spirit of the home.</p>

<p>Outside, the property continues to impress. A circular covered entranceway welcomes guests with elegance, while expansive decks and patios provide ample space for relaxation and gatherings. An 18-metre man-made outdoor swimming pool and hot tub are surrounded by artificial creeks and rivers, complete with cascading waterfalls that add movement and sound to the tranquil setting. A natural swimming hole offers a vantage point for cliff jumping, adding a touch of thrill to the serene environment. Lush landscaping merges into the adjacent national forest, opening up endless opportunities for hiking and biking in summer, and snowmobiling and backcountry skiing when winter sets in.</p>

<p>As a mountain retreat, this Provo Canyon property checks every box. But it’s not just the location or amenities that make it special – it’s the interior design. Masterfully executed by Roxbury Studios, a firm based in the Utah capital, it blends 30 different architectural genres, drawing inspiration from medieval, classical Italian, Art Nouveau, and even Hawaiian styles. According to designer Roxanne Hepworth, the risk of creating a chaotic mishmash was real. However, by using each genre as a subtle reference point rather than a dominant theme, the team achieved a harmonious balance that feels both eclectic and cohesive.</p>

<p>Lighting played a crucial role in bringing the interior to life. Given the massive scale of the house and its soaring 7.6-metre (25-foot) ceilings, illuminating the space required careful planning. The designers had to ensure that artificial lighting complemented the abundant natural light streaming in through the large round windows. These vast portholes not only flood the home with sunlight but also frame stunning views of the surrounding boulders and mountains. Equipped with motorised shades, they allow residents to control the ambience with ease, adjusting the light to suit their mood or the time of day.</p>

<p>The lighting scheme includes a variety of fixtures strategically placed to enhance the architecture and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Despite the reliance on artificial lighting, the house remains deeply connected to the natural rhythms of the day. Sunbeams dance across the floors in the morning, casting intricate shadows that shift as the hours pass. In the evening, the interior glows with a soft radiance, offering comfort and serenity.</p>

<p>The dream for many homeowners nearing retirement is simple and deeply felt: to spend one’s twilight years somewhere special. A sanctuary where years of diligence are rewarded with peace, purpose, and beauty. While this vision remains elusive for some, one fortunate Hong Kong couple brought it vividly to life. Nestled in Pearl Court in the calm sanctuary of Kowloon Tong’s Beacon Hill, their newly remodelled apartment now serves as both an elegant gallery and a refined home.</p>



<p>Having recently stepped back from their professional obligations, the couple’s intent was to devote more energy to their passion for fine art. They engaged interior designers Alain Wong and Ada Cheung of Comodo Interior and Furniture Design to shape a space that echoed their artistic sensibilities and practical requirements. The result? A genteel suburbanity permeates every artfully crafted nook and ingeniously integrated cranny of the home, nestled amid the beguiling calm of Beacon Hill.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Haven of Balance</h3>



<p>Crossing the threshold reveals an atmosphere of discreet refinement. Spanning over 1,800 square feet, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence includes a study, open-plan living and dining room, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Storage areas are plentiful, designed to safeguard not only household necessities but also artistic treasures accumulated over decades.</p>

<p>To fulfill their curatorial ambitions, the design brief called for a space that could function equally as a luxurious residence, gallery, and secure archive. Wide aisles between the shared spaces [give] the couple’s cherished acquisitions room to hang and be admired and contemplated in the manner they deserve. This openness fosters leisurely exploration while accentuating each piece’s presence.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Refined Functionality</h3>



<p>Practicality was paramount—especially given the owners’ advancing years. The home’s smart configuration serves this demographic gracefully, with amenities and spatial adjustments aligned to the couple’s lifestyle. A guest room was sacrificed to make way for integrated, automated shelving systems—an essential concession for aging art lovers seeking both convenience and security.</p>



<p>In another deft touch, part of the original living room was repurposed into a second bedroom. Rather than compromising the communal spirit, this recalibration fostered a more intimate, welcoming environment. Structural supports that could have disrupted the aesthetic were recessed into bespoke wardrobes, reflecting the designers’ attention to both utility and finesse.</p>

<p>On the first floor is a sitting room, with sofa and chairs placed around a large, circular rug on the parquet floor. In perfect symmetry, the carpet traces the lines of the round false ceiling from which a round chandelier hangs. Two marble coffee tables, also round in shape, stand in the centre, adding to the balanced play of shapes and textures.</p>

A large walk-in wardrobe provides ample storage for clothing and accessories, and a spacious en-suite bathroom boasts a freestanding tub, separate shower and double vanity unit.</p>

<p>Perched on a verdant hillside in Tateyama, Japan, overlooking Toyama Bay, is a house boasting breathtaking views, which was designed to rejuvenate the spirits of its city-dwelling owners when they visit on the weekends. The stunning landscape and ever-changing ocean vistas inspired the interior design, which at every single opportunity maximises the visual impact of the great outdoors.</p>

<p>The two bedrooms are simply furnished with muted hues and fabrics, designed to direct the eye to the scenic feast beyond the windows. The master suite is bathed in natural light, with a spacious layout that evokes stillness. The twin guest room, on the other hand, features elegant Japanese wallpaper that holds sentimental value for the home owners, adding a touch of personality to the space.</p>

<p>Both bedrooms come with ensuite bathrooms, each designed to provide a calm and rejuvenating experience. The master ensuite features a spacious walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead and an onsen-inspired jacuzzi tub for relaxing hot soaks. The walls are clad in glossy white marble, while the floors are paved with warm grey limestone.</p>

<p>The guest bathroom, while smaller in scale, is no less luxurious. A compact walk-in shower has a sleek glass enclosure, while a wall-mounted vanity offers ample storage for toiletries. The bedroom’s richer colour palette and natural textures impart an aura of peace and reflection, making it the perfect retreat for family members or friends joining the couple and their two small dogs on their frequent getaways.</p>

<p>In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, a sustainable approach was adopted in the erection and modelling of this 190-square-metre abode. It is built predominately from wood in an eco-friendly mindset reflected by the use of natural materials, energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible construction methods. Thus, the design team has delivered a retreat that not only revives the owners’ spirits but also contributes to the wellbeing of the planet.</p>

<p>One of the most striking aspects of this house is its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Glass expanses and sliding doors create a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior, allowing the couple and their guests to immerse themselves fully in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Whether they are lounging on the sun-drenched deck or cosying up by the fire, the occupants can always feel connected to the magnificent landscape.</p>

At the heart of this spectacular home – for holidays or perhaps retirement – is the lounge, which boasts a wide seaview terrace, providing a seamless integration of the indoors with the outdoors.</p>

<p>The gourmet kitchen on the west side of the residence leads to a splendid roofed patio and barbecue deck, where a snooker table awaits for friends or family to enjoy some game time while meals are prepared. The outdoor spaces are furnished with comfortable sofas and sun loungers sheltered by retractable shades. A choice of dining areas – indoors or out – adjoins the kitchen and barbecue deck. The two are separated by a glass window affording beautiful vistas of the seascape just metres away.</p>

<p>A multimedia room is positioned on the eastern side of the villa where the occupants – if they aren’t glued to the big screen – can enjoy views of the lush green gardens in front of the house. Decoration is kept minimal and the abundance of white that dresses the walls and upholstery makes the living spaces seem even brighter since the natural light bounces off them as it floods in through the windows and skylights.</p>

<p>Travertine-tile flooring has been utilised throughout the living areas and pool decks, while a unique wood-like tile covers the upper floors for convenient maintenance. Aesthetics fuse with practicality here, as the material selection must take account of the humid climate.</p>

<p>Each perfectly proportioned bedroom has a private ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed, and beautiful views over the water. The colour palette here is deliberately calming, with soothing shades of blue, green, white and sandy neutrals that nod to the ocean hues.</p>

This gallery connects to the upstairs bedrooms that have been carefully designed so that all three have access to breathtaking ocean views. The two flanking the hall have a longer layout, extending into balconies. All the bedrooms have similar, harmonious fittings and decoration, with large paintings or tapestries hanging above the headboards and a sitting area beside the windows.</p>

<p>These are indeed serene retreats that embody the peacefulness of a far-flung isle. Soft, billowy curtains in white linen filter the glare of the sunlight while the white walls radiate its joyful warmth. Plush rugs in natural fibres add comforting texture to the floors. <p>Conceived by Seattle- and New York-based Allison Lind Interiors, the lakehouse is a masterclass in rustic-chic design, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Sprawling over one level, it boasts breathtaking views of the verdant landscape. The exterior is clad in weathered wood, with large windows and sliding glass doors that allow the beauty of the outdoors to flood in.</p>

<p>The entrance hall is a sensory experience transitioning from outside to in. Clad in textured, grooved wood, it is flanked by a large antique mirror facing a beautiful work of art. A roughly carved stone console table makes for an intriguing piece of décor and an ideal resting place for two tall vases. The printed rug in front of the door matches the pattern on the walls, while a chandelier brightens this welcoming space.</p>

<p>Inside, the open-plan living area is warm and inviting, with plush furnishings and a striking interplay of dark and light colour tones. A large white sectional sofa is set beside a dark TV wall under an even darker ceiling, creating interesting contrasts in reflecting and absorbing light. Balancing the dark and bright shades, an immaculate white carpet complements the sofa, while a round golden coffee table adds to the regal mood of the living space.</p>

<p>Seating on the other side of the room is centred around a rectangular glass-clad coffee table, but the focal point is a magnificent modern fireplace, where the family can gather in the winter for warmth and comfort. Two adjacent plush sofas rest on a richly patterned red Turkish carpet. Large glass windows, which open onto a patio, allow in abundant light and offer views of the green outdoors.</p>

<p>The living room’s feature wall is dressed in glass tiles that display interesting reflections of both the interior and the exterior. Since shelves here display the owners’ collection of artwork and family portraits, it becomes a small personal museum. The kitchen is equipped with a large black marble island with opulent black-and-gold bar chairs. Oak wood and black cabinets maintain the dark colour scheme.</p>

<p>The adjacent dining area offers the best views of the surrounding landscape. Tranquil meals can be enjoyed within sight of reflective greenery dancing off the emerald-green still waters of the lake. This inviting space is enhanced by a long dark solid-wood dining table surrounded by elegant rattan dining chairs. Two large white crystal chandeliers dangle down from above, shedding light on winter evenings. Even the laundry room situated off the dining area embodies the contrasting dark and light theme of the home. Light wooden cabinets on dark patterned walls provide ample storage.</p>

<p>Minimal yet rich décor in the master bedroom is purposely designed to provide a warm space in which to relax and unwind. A wooden planked wall behind the bed stands in contrast with the black upholstery of the headboard and the white bed linen. <p>Since the children’s bedrooms are designed in accordance with their personalities, they offer appealing character stories. One has a gold canopy bed flanked by two carved-wood side tables. A plush purple sofa at one side of the room offers a cosy nook to indulge in books and music while enjoying the scenery outside. Its large floral carpet makes the room feel fresh and lively like the outdoors.</p>

<p>The elder daughter’s bedroom is similarly bright and spacious. With a beaded hanging light above the bed, dream-catchers dotted around, and a huge painting of horses on the wall above behind the headboard, it has a free-spirited charm. A rattan egg swing drops from the ceiling beside a window that offers a pretty view of the lake.</p>

<p>Other musicians have been similarly captivated by the city that never sleeps. Piano man Billy Joel wrote the classic tune New York State of Mind in its honour, and legendary crooner Frank Sinatra possibly summed it up best with his bold, brassy version of New York, New York.</p>

<p>Following in this artistic tradition, our featured home this month is a modern, lofty perch situated above the Museum of Modern Art in one of New York’s most exclusive and stylish locales. The development at 53 West 53rd Street in downtown Manhattan is not yet completed, but it is on track to become one of New York’s ritziest residences. Once finished, the 1,050-foot-high tower will reshape the city’s skyline and become an attraction in its own right.</p>

<p>The tower – dubbed 53W53 – was designed by acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel. His striking design for the building’s exterior, referred to in the architectural trade as a diagrid (a portmanteau of diagonal grids), is somewhat akin to an abstract sculpture – making it an appropriate home for the three floors of museum gallery space that can be found inside. The building’s intriguing and imposing look beckons the would-be homeowner to explore the world within.</p>

<p>Nouvel is a highly credentialed architect and designer, and is worthy of a project of such ambitious scope. A winner of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, his diverse body of work is as impressive as it is varied. His past projects have included museums, concert halls, luxury residences and cultural commissions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Fondation Cartier in Paris.</p>

<p>Interiors come courtesy of New York-based architect, designer and artist Thierry Despont. In the past, he has lent his talents to the Ritz in Paris, the Dorchester Hotel in London and Harry Winston’s flagship store in Beverly Hills.</p>

<p>Despont’s impeccable taste and attention to detail, apparent in all of his private dwelling projects, is on show here at 53W53 as well. His deft touch is to thank for the understated lighting fixtures and bespoke kitchens and bathrooms found within. Masterfully crafted mahogany doors with custom-designed bronze trim echo the tower’s distinctive outline.</p>

<p>The dwelling also boasts an amply windowed kitchen with cabinetry by Italian furniture maker Molteni, classic marble countertops with backlit backsplash and state-of-the-art appliances by Miele and Sub-Zero. State of Mind: Musicians have long sung the praises of the Big Apple. Here’s a home worthy of the hype


<p>A beautiful home has all the more character if it is situated in a picturesque neighbourhood. This elaborately stylish 800-square-foot apartment in Oliwa, a historic suburb of Gdańsk in Poland, certainly embodies the spirit of its surrounding landscape. Remodelled in striking combinations of dark teal green, grey stone and warm wood by design firm Raca Architekci, it involved a year of planning and renovation. Michal Raca, the main designer and founder of the firm, worked closely with his client to materialize her vision of a nature-inspired home. </p>

<p>A sense of grandeur is immediate as you enter the flat. The absence of an entrance hall increases the interior space and imparts volume, imbuing comfort from the moment you step through the door. A tall elliptical mirror framed in gold brass is strategically placed so you can check your appearance before leaving or entering, while a black veneer bench with an upholstered seat is a convenient spot for slipping shoes on or off. To provide maximum storage in such a small space, the designer has incorporated cupboards that blend with the walls, this minimalist approach gives a clean feel. </p>

<p>A polished terrazzo floor serves as a prelude to the wooden flooring within. A brass wall lamp is placed as a stylish ornament, its adjustable lighting setting the mood of the space. The rich teal hues of the feature walls act as a sophisticated backdrop for contemporary furniture. The designer has deliberately used mirrors of different shapes and sizes to make the apartment look more spacious. Large black and gold pots with large plants can be found in different corners of the house, flaunting the green thumb of the owner and her love for nature. </p>

<p>The open kitchen is the heart of the apartment, linking the living and dining areas. Not the keenest of cooks, the homeowner initially envisaged a small, compact kitchen, but one of the layouts proposed by studio founder Michal Raca offered a larger layout with a kitchen island. Selecting this option has proved a joy; it has become her favorite space, allowing her to host friends and discover delightful new recipes. </p>

<p>The island has a bold countertop of bardiglio marble from Spain, which is paired with other expanses of grey to emphasize the beauty of the stone. Its complementary brass accessories look like jewels adjoining the teal green dining area.  A round gold-rimmed mirror serves as a backdrop to the dining table balancing the dark tones of teal allowing more natural light to be reflected from the walls. Two beautiful round pendant lights hang above the kitchen island while a similar horizontal pendant light illuminates the dining space. </p>

<p>The upholstery is set to be the same shade as the walls, whether for curtains, the bed’s velvet headboard or the fabric of armchairs. A wall of windows spanning the living and dining areas offers panoramic views of the Baltic port city’s old town, where rows of red roofs reach out to the horizon. The apertures allow abundant light to fill the whole space and are embellished with heavy velour dark green curtains in a décor reminiscent of an opera house. The velour finish of the walls reduces dazzling reflections as the sunlight streams in.</p>

<p>A cosy space for unwinding, the master bedroom is dressed in two contrasting materials, plush velour panels above the veneer. Behind the bed, an upholstered headrest built into the lower part of the wall adds optimum comfort. The different textured panels are separated by a strip of bardiglio marble underlined in black, echoing the theme of the living quarters. The eye-catching originality of this design is enhanced by beautiful golden lamps that provide subtle contrast. </p>

<p>Following Raca’s extensive renovations, the bedroom and en-suite bathroom have become one coherent space, framed by large sloping windows at one end. The master suite’s aesthetic value has been further elevated by the addition of a glass wall partition for easy access between the two areas. It is a functional solution that not only allows natural light to flow into the bathroom – unusual in apartment blocks these days – but also gives the appearance of a more spacious bedroom. For the sake of privacy, a curtain can be drawn across the divide and bestows the ambience of a luxury spa. </p>

A specially designed console table holds all the equipment required for music appreciation, from stereo to speakers and a turntable. There are city views for inspiration, with the historic charms of Gdańsk sure to instil harmony into new compositions. </p>
