<p>Bedrooms are serene retreats providing an escape from busy city life while offering glimpses of the desirable neighbourhood through their large windows. The master bedroom is a luxurious sanctuary with a modern aesthetic. The luxe velvet headboard of the king-size bed is the centrepiece of the room, while the front and legs of matching bedside chests of drawers are wrapped with carved metal vines of flowers, adding a distinctive artsy vibe. A large walk-in wardrobe provides ample storage for clothing and accessories, and a spacious en-suite bathroom boasts a freestanding tub, separate shower and double vanity unit.</p>

<p>Juggling colourful textiles, one of the family bedrooms has a bohemian feel as might befit an artistic youngster. The bed features a vibrant patchwork headboard, and the walls are decorated with macramé and art. Shelves above the desk hold an eclectic collection of books, DVDs and board games.</p>

<p>The designers had comfort and opulence in mind when they decorated one of the two guest bedrooms. A stylish chaise longue sets the tone amid vintage décor. The walls are adorned with sophisticated artwork, while a plush rug adds warmth and texture to the space. A skylight provides dramatic lighting  from above and there’s a lovely view from the floor-to-ceiling window.</p>

<p>The other guest room is more modern and minimalist in style, characterised by clean lines, neutral colours and a lack of clutter. The bed has a sleek, low-profile frame and a round headboard. The walls are painted a soothing grey to complement the dark hardwood floor. A small side table and a floor lamp complete the simple yet elegant design.</p>

<p>Perched on a verdant hillside in Tateyama, Japan, overlooking Toyama Bay, is a house boasting breathtaking views, which was designed to rejuvenate the spirits of its city-dwelling owners when they visit on the weekends. The stunning landscape and ever-changing ocean vistas inspired the interior design, which at every single opportunity maximises the visual impact of the great outdoors.</p>

<p>The internal architectural configuration, conceived by Ryoko Ogoshi and her award-winning Tokyo-based studio, Ron Design, ensures that all the key rooms – an open-plan ground floor and two bedrooms upstairs – are oriented towards the uninterrupted sea view. Calm, warm interiors provide a luxurious haven for relaxation, perfect for unwinding on rainy days when weather interrupts watersports or intimate evenings beside the vast contemporary fireplace.</p>

<p>A dramatic double-height living space serves as the backbone of the layout, with a sunken seating area below framed by the magnificent seascape. This clever design conjures a quiet sense of awe, with soaring ceilings and expansive windows amplifying the seamless connection between inside tranquillity and untamed nature outside. Comfortable beige sofas piled high with blue, gold and cream throw cushions invite relaxation and contemplation. These colour accents are repeated on the plush rug underfoot and a large painting hanging high on one wall.</p>

<p>Adjacent to the living area, a beautiful open kitchen and dining space form the heart of the home. The kitchen’s sleek, minimalist design is softened by warm-toned-wood cabinetry. A centre island provides ample counter space for food preparation, while a built-in breakfast nook offers a cosy spot for casual dining.</p>

Suspended above the table is a sleek modern light fixture providing warm ambient lighting, while floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and offer breathtaking views of the seascape.</p>

<p>The couple’s active lifestyle was a driving force behind the design concept. As avid surfers and outdoor enthusiasts, they wanted a weekend retreat that would allow them to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Japanese coastline. The designers responded with an interior that not only celebrates the incredible sea views but also incorporates natural materials, textures and colours throughout.</p>

The master ensuite features a spacious walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead and an onsen-inspired jacuzzi tub for relaxing hot soaks. The walls are clad in glossy white marble, while the floors are paved with warm grey limestone.</p>

<p>The guest bathroom, while smaller in scale, is no less luxurious. A compact walk-in shower has a sleek glass enclosure, while a wall-mounted vanity offers ample storage for toiletries. The bedroom’s richer colour palette and natural textures impart an aura of peace and reflection, making it the perfect retreat for family members or friends joining the couple and their two small dogs on their frequent getaways.</p>

It is built predominately from wood in an eco-friendly mindset reflected by the use of natural materials, energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible construction methods. Thus, the design team has delivered a retreat that not only revives the owners’ spirits but also contributes to the wellbeing of the planet.</p>

<p>One of the most striking aspects of this house is its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. At the heart of this spectacular home – for holidays or perhaps retirement – is the lounge, which boasts a wide seaview terrace, providing a seamless integration of the indoors with the outdoors.</p>

<p>The gourmet kitchen on the west side of the residence leads to a splendid roofed patio and barbecue deck, where a snooker table awaits for friends or family to enjoy some game time while meals are prepared. The outdoor spaces are furnished with comfortable sofas and sun loungers sheltered by retractable shades. A choice of dining areas – indoors or out – adjoins the kitchen and barbecue deck. The two are separated by a glass window affording beautiful vistas of the seascape just metres away.</p>

<p>A multimedia room is positioned on the eastern side of the villa where the occupants – if they aren’t glued to the big screen – can enjoy views of the lush green gardens in front of the house. Decoration is kept minimal and the abundance of white that dresses the walls and upholstery makes the living spaces seem even brighter since the natural light bounces off them as it floods in through the windows and skylights.</p>

<p>Travertine-tile flooring has been utilised throughout the living areas and pool decks, while a unique wood-like tile covers the upper floors for convenient maintenance. Aesthetics fuse with practicality here, as the material selection must take account of the humid climate.</p>

<p>Each perfectly proportioned bedroom has a private ensuite bathroom, a king-size bed, and beautiful views over the water. Two bedrooms are situated on the ground floor with another three spacious chambers on the upper floor, enough to accommodate a large gathering of house guests. The colour palette here is deliberately calming, with soothing shades of blue, green, white and sandy neutrals that nod to the ocean hues.</p>

<p>An arched staircase with floating steps leads towards the upper floor and is lit by a circular white chandelier. This gallery connects to the upstairs bedrooms that have been carefully designed so that all three have access to breathtaking ocean views. The two flanking the hall have a longer layout, extending into balconies. All the bedrooms have similar, harmonious fittings and decoration, with large paintings or tapestries hanging above the headboards and a sitting area beside the windows.</p>

<p>These are indeed serene retreats that embody the peacefulness of a far-flung isle. Soft, billowy curtains in white linen filter the glare of the sunlight while the white walls radiate its joyful warmth. Plush rugs in natural fibres add comforting texture to the floors. <p>Tucked away in the picturesque countryside of Washington state lies a tranquil lakehouse retreat, offering escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled among towering trees and lush greenery on the shores of a pristine lake, this stunning vacation retreat is the perfect haven for the owners, a couple and their three children, when they seek relaxation, adventure and a deep connection with nature.</p>

<p>Conceived by Seattle- and New York-based Allison Lind Interiors, the lakehouse is a masterclass in rustic-chic design, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Sprawling over one level, it boasts breathtaking views of the verdant landscape. The exterior is clad in weathered wood, with large windows and sliding glass doors that allow the beauty of the outdoors to flood in.</p>

<p>The entrance hall is a sensory experience transitioning from outside to in. Clad in textured, grooved wood, it is flanked by a large antique mirror facing a beautiful work of art. A roughly carved stone console table makes for an intriguing piece of décor and an ideal resting place for two tall vases. The printed rug in front of the door matches the pattern on the walls, while a chandelier brightens this welcoming space.</p>

<p>Inside, the open-plan living area is warm and inviting, with plush furnishings and a striking interplay of dark and light colour tones. A large white sectional sofa is set beside a dark TV wall under an even darker ceiling, creating interesting contrasts in reflecting and absorbing light. Balancing the dark and bright shades, an immaculate white carpet complements the sofa, while a round golden coffee table adds to the regal mood of the living space.</p>

<p>Seating on the other side of the room is centred around a rectangular glass-clad coffee table, but the focal point is a magnificent modern fireplace, where the family can gather in the winter for warmth and comfort. Two adjacent plush sofas rest on a richly patterned red Turkish carpet. Large glass windows, which open onto a patio, allow in abundant light and offer views of the green outdoors.</p>

<p>The living room’s feature wall is dressed in glass tiles that display interesting reflections of both the interior and the exterior. Since shelves here display the owners’ collection of artwork and family portraits, it becomes a small personal museum. The kitchen is equipped with a large black marble island with opulent black-and-gold bar chairs. Oak wood and black cabinets maintain the dark colour scheme.</p>

<p>The adjacent dining area offers the best views of the surrounding landscape. Tranquil meals can be enjoyed within sight of reflective greenery dancing off the emerald-green still waters of the lake. This inviting space is enhanced by a long dark solid-wood dining table surrounded by elegant rattan dining chairs. Two large white crystal chandeliers dangle down from above, shedding light on winter evenings. Even the laundry room situated off the dining area embodies the contrasting dark and light theme of the home. Light wooden cabinets on dark patterned walls provide ample storage.</p>

<p>Minimal yet rich décor in the master bedroom is purposely designed to provide a warm space in which to relax and unwind. A wooden planked wall behind the bed stands in contrast with the black upholstery of the headboard and the white bed linen. A black-and-gold side table complements an Aztec-style rug on each side of the bed.</p>

<p>The master bedroom features a private balcony, perfect for sipping coffee or a glass of wine while drinking in nature. The en-suite also highlights plenty of wood and patterned walls, while natural light emanating from two skylights above the shower intensifies the bathroom’s brightness.</p>

<p>Since the children’s bedrooms are designed in accordance with their personalities, they offer appealing character stories. One has a gold canopy bed flanked by two carved-wood side tables. A plush purple sofa at one side of the room offers a cosy nook to indulge in books and music while enjoying the scenery outside. Its large floral carpet makes the room feel fresh and lively like the outdoors.</p>

<p>The elder daughter’s bedroom is similarly bright and spacious. With a beaded hanging light above the bed, dream-catchers dotted around, and a huge painting of horses on the wall above behind the headboard, it has a free-spirited charm. A rattan egg swing drops from the ceiling beside a window that offers a pretty view of the lake.</p>

<p>The son’s bedroom is kept minimal with grey walls and a dark carpet. Overlooked by a large geometric painting of a wolf, the frameless bed has blue fabric upholstery and a bold red-and-blue quilt. <p>New York has long been an inspiration to entertainers. King of Cool and avant-garde singer-songwriter Lou Reed had a long-standing love affair with the place, and his biggest hit, Walk on the Wild Side, is set on its very streets.</p>

<p>Other musicians have been similarly captivated by the city that never sleeps. Piano man Billy Joel wrote the classic tune New York State of Mind in its honour, and legendary crooner Frank Sinatra possibly summed it up best with his bold, brassy version of New York, New York.</p>

<p>Following in this artistic tradition, our featured home this month is a modern, lofty perch situated above the Museum of Modern Art in one of New York’s most exclusive and stylish locales. The development at 53 West 53rd Street in downtown Manhattan is not yet completed, but it is on track to become one of New York’s ritziest residences. Once finished, the 1,050-foot-high tower will reshape the city’s skyline and become an attraction in its own right.</p>

<p>The tower – dubbed 53W53 – was designed by acclaimed French architect Jean Nouvel. His striking design for the building’s exterior, referred to in the architectural trade as a diagrid (a portmanteau of diagonal grids), is somewhat akin to an abstract sculpture – making it an appropriate home for the three floors of museum gallery space that can be found inside. The building’s intriguing and imposing look beckons the would-be homeowner to explore the world within.</p>

<p>Nouvel is a highly credentialed architect and designer, and is worthy of a project of such ambitious scope. A winner of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, his diverse body of work is as impressive as it is varied. His past projects have included museums, concert halls, luxury residences and cultural commissions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Fondation Cartier in Paris.</p>

<p>A beautiful home has all the more character if it is situated in a picturesque neighbourhood. This elaborately stylish 800-square-foot apartment in Oliwa, a historic suburb of Gdańsk in Poland, certainly embodies the spirit of its surrounding landscape. Remodelled in striking combinations of dark teal green, grey stone and warm wood by design firm Raca Architekci, it involved a year of planning and renovation. Michal Raca, the main designer and founder of the firm, worked closely with his client to materialize her vision of a nature-inspired home. </p>

<p>A sense of grandeur is immediate as you enter the flat. The absence of an entrance hall increases the interior space and imparts volume, imbuing comfort from the moment you step through the door. A tall elliptical mirror framed in gold brass is strategically placed so you can check your appearance before leaving or entering, while a black veneer bench with an upholstered seat is a convenient spot for slipping shoes on or off. To provide maximum storage in such a small space, the designer has incorporated cupboards that blend with the walls, this minimalist approach gives a clean feel. </p>

The designer has deliberately used mirrors of different shapes and sizes to make the apartment look more spacious. Large black and gold pots with large plants can be found in different corners of the house, flaunting the green thumb of the owner and her love for nature. </p>

<p>The open kitchen is the heart of the apartment, linking the living and dining areas. Not the keenest of cooks, the homeowner initially envisaged a small, compact kitchen, but one of the layouts proposed by studio founder Michal Raca offered a larger layout with a kitchen island. Selecting this option has proved a joy; it has become her favorite space, allowing her to host friends and discover delightful new recipes. </p>

<p>The island has a bold countertop of bardiglio marble from Spain, which is paired with other expanses of grey to emphasize the beauty of the stone. Its complementary brass accessories look like jewels adjoining the teal green dining area.  A round gold-rimmed mirror serves as a backdrop to the dining table balancing the dark tones of teal allowing more natural light to be reflected from the walls. Two beautiful round pendant lights hang above the kitchen island while a similar horizontal pendant light illuminates the dining space. </p>

<p>The upholstery is set to be the same shade as the walls, whether for curtains, the bed’s velvet headboard or the fabric of armchairs. A wall of windows spanning the living and dining areas offers panoramic views of the Baltic port city’s old town, where rows of red roofs reach out to the horizon. The apertures allow abundant light to fill the whole space and are embellished with heavy velour dark green curtains in a décor reminiscent of an opera house. The velour finish of the walls reduces dazzling reflections as the sunlight streams in.</p>

It is a functional solution that not only allows natural light to flow into the bathroom – unusual in apartment blocks these days – but also gives the appearance of a more spacious bedroom. For the sake of privacy, a curtain can be drawn across the divide and bestows the ambience of a luxury spa. </p>

Inside, a spacious foyer extends into a sweeping staircase of black and white Dalmatian marble leading to the upper floor. The two storeys are separated by distinct themes. On the ground floor, the designers use dark, soothing hues to contrast with a dramatic white and grey backdrop for the fireplace, where Lithos Design light stone panels form a striking three-dimensional effect. The upper floor is dominated by two palatial bedrooms distinguished by vivid colour tones.</p>

<p>The heart of the home is the extensive open-plan living room, with its soaring, well-illuminated ceiling and windows that frame the garden and let in plenty of natural light. Easy access to the patio enables an immediate, harmonious transition from indoors to out. The garden landscaping juxtaposes trimmed shrubs and tall trees.</p>

<p>In the centre of the room, a large plush velvet sofa sits under a shower of crystal glass dangling from the chandelier. It faces the majestic stone fireplace which has been carved into the marble feature wall. This is the perfect spot for cosying up on a round chaise longue in front of the fire during chilly winter evenings. In an unconventional but elegant style, the television is suspended on a separate stand rather than positioned on the feature wall, making it easier to move the angle of the screen when hosting large gatherings.</p>

<p>Extending from the lounge, the open kitchen is equipped with ample counter space, perfect for whipping up traditional Russian dishes. A large centre island, also crafted in marble, acts as a dining table and is set with four chairs. The colours here are brighter, with mustard-yellow cabinets and grey walls. A round crystal chandelier hovers above the dining area, echoing its sister in the living room.</p>

<p>The upstairs bedrooms are lavish, serene retreats with gorgeous bedding and soft lighting. Here, too, chandeliers contribute to the warm luxury of the décor. The master suite has an oceanic theme, contrasting the turquoise and deep blue of the upholstery, panelling and drapes with the golden ‘liquid-metal’ coating that etches the walls and furniture. The chamber’s polygonal shape makes it a multipurpose space with a TV wall, sofa and armchair. The en-suite bathroom has a deluxe soaking tub and separate shower, perfect for unwinding after a long day. The other bedroom exudes an earthier theme, combining beige enamel and a rich palette of American walnut. It is an unusually long room, separated by a TV wall facing the bed, with a walk-in closet and desk beyond. Both bedrooms are adjoined by bathrooms decorated in accordance with the colour scheme – light and dark. Mirrors from IPE Cavalli have graceful frames, and the designers have provided several options for lighting – from pendant globes to spotlighting under the sink and bathtub.</p>

<p>The furniture in both rooms was chosen to match the interior colours, with walls and headboards highlighted as accents. In the turquoise room, the feature wall behind the bed is framed by natural Lithos marble with an eye-catching illuminated pattern; in the brown bedroom, the wall plastering is accentuated by an undulating relief carving. Special attention has been paid to the wardrobes, which are also dressed in the colours introduced in the bedrooms. There are functional cabinets made by local craftspeople, as well as chests of drawers and an IPE Cavalli dressing table.</p>

Grounded in Grandeur: Traditional motifs and modern comforts cohabit in a Russian home of rich colour and countless chandeliers


<p>Heralding change and a joyful celebration of life, the spring season has inspired countless poets and artists through the centuries. Taking inspiration from its ephemeral beauty, award-winning Taipei-based interior design firm L’atelier Fantasia imagines a 3,000-square-foot duplex residence as ‘The first drizzle of spring’. Idan Chiang, the studio’s founder, emphasises the relationship between people and their surroundings in this enchanting sanctuary created for a couple and their two children. </p>

<p>The residential layout is a thoughtful choreography of privacy and interaction, with rooms positioned at the four corners of the home for the best views of the outdoors. This arrangement fosters familial intimacy while respecting individual solitude in a space where luxury, elegance and playfulness intersect. The design choices are not merely aesthetic; they are instrumental in creating a living environment that is as responsive to the family’s dynamics as it is to the changing seasons.</p>

<p>Upon entering, you are greeted by a spacious living room with a neutral colour palette of soft grey walls, cream-coloured trim and plush velour floors. The space is illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows, framed by whisper-thin silk curtains and affording breathtaking views of the Taipei skyline. Exuding opulence and refinement, the room envelopes occupants in a sense of warmth and comfort, surrounded by plush furnishings and rich textures.</p>

<p>The lounge ceiling is accentuated at various points and the lighting is kept minimal, giving an elegant finish to the space. A large sectional sofa and two designer armchairs face the TV wall, complemented by circular coffee tables. The walls are adorned with a selection of artworks, including a stunning piece of traditional Taiwanese calligraphy, a modern abstract painting and compelling prints by local photographers. A grand piano sits at one end of the room, reflecting the owners’ taste in music as well as art. </p>

<p>Adjacent to the living room, the kitchen is a symphony of clean lines, minimal ornamentation and top-of-the-line appliances. Crisp white cabinets, gleaming stainless-steel surfaces, and a spacious island with a built-in sink create a functional and stylish space perfect for culinary creativity. Two skylights brighten the room and green velvet dining chairs at the counter stand out amid a wash of white, bringing warmth to this space for enjoying casual family meals. </p>

<p>A huge lazy Susan table occupies this end of the lounge, forming a dining area for hosting guests and larger gatherings. Intricate blue-crystal pendants from the chandelier above match the blue dining chairs. Every detail, from the carefully chosen materials to the meticulously curated art, contributes to a harmonious balance of style, comfort and functionality. This area’s focal point is a breathtaking floor-to-ceiling window, offering a panoramic vista of the city skyline and flooding the space with natural light.</p>

<p>Upstairs is a second, cosy living room for family reunions and children’s play dates. The space is a canvas of vibrant early spring colours, woven with warmth and finesse. A tea-rose-pink faux-fur sofa on a large, round grey area rug makes the room all the more alluring. </p>

<p>High population density, limited landmass, a superfluity of the mega-affluent – you don’t need to be too much of a genius to understand why Hong Kong real estate commands such a seemingly unreal valuation. Even with property prices tipped to rise by an additional 10 percent this year, buyers remain wholly undeterred, with the residential purchasing cycle seemingly set only to accelerate.</p>

<p>Purchasing property and creating a home, of course, represent very different challenges. While the former requires a mastery of certain legal and financial necessities (or the tactical deployment of someone who does), the latter requires you to give a part of yourself, as you set about transforming a developer’s shell into something perfectly tailored to your family’s values and expectations.</p>

<p>It was just such a challenge that faced a young mainland family of four as they sought to reinvent the 2,300sq.ft space they had bought in Tsim Sha Tsui’s high-end Grand Austin development. While their newly-completed apartment came with all the expected fixtures and fittings, it was somewhat lacking in any of the individual touches and flourishes that would mark it out as a true family home. That’s when they decided to call on the services of a professional – a professional who so successfully re-fashioned their home that it was declared the Best Apartment in the 2017 Asia-Pacific Property Awards.</p>

<p>Their chosen professional was Johnny Leung, Creative Director of Chinc’s Workshop, a Sheung Wan-based, award-winning interior design consultancy. Recalling the initial brief, Leung says: “The family was very clear as to what they wanted – a practical, contemporary home, with strong visual appeal and a clear bespoke functionality in each of its separate spaces.”</p>

<p>Seeking a theme that would provide a sense of unity across the whole space, the design team settled on the circle, seeing it as both a universal symbol of completeness and as an icon that’s synonymous with perfection for many mainlanders. With their base conceit in place, they then looked to incorporate it across the home in a series of knowing and simpatico variations – linked, multiple circles in the shared spaces, rounded cornering throughout and, where possible, the creation of curved enclaves. The circle motif was also embedded into the lighting installations, the carpeting and the occasional tables.</p>

<p>One of the first casualties of the circle-centred makeover was a long, straight corridor that led off from the dining area. Clearly out of keeping with the overall redoubtably round look, it was swiftly demolished, granting the kitchen area a curvaceous, open and welcoming appeal.</p>

<p>The bedrooms, too, were areas where Chinc’s set out to make its mark. Its most drastic move was to combine two of the rooms into an outsized master bedroom, one with abundant natural light, a commodious walk-in wardrobe and the last word in chic ensuite bathrooms.</p>

<p>The focus on optimising the level of natural light in the bedroom space is another hallmark of Chinc’s approach. Explaining this particular element of the company’s design philosophy, Leung said: “No apartment, no matter how beautifully decorated, can look its best if the lighting is not right. By removing unnecessary walls and introducing pocket sliding doors and glass partitions, we subsequently maximised the use of natural sunlight.</p>

<p>“We also employed asymmetric ceiling light housings to provide a diffused lighting effect overall in many of the rooms. We also opted to install down-lights in specific areas, all designed to create a dramatic look and feel as the night rolls in.”</p>

<p>While the tactical use of illumination has clearly boosted the home’s individuality, it is the sophisticated – yet playful – use of materials and upholstery that has gifted it the warmth the family was looking for. Whether it’s the wallpaper that morphs under various light sources, the individually-curated collection of custom ceramic tiles or the singularly-shaped selection of somewhat avant garde lounge chairs, an endearingly quirky and individualistic style prevails throughout the whole apartment.</p>

<p>While winning a pan-Asian award for the quality of its interior design work is clearly all to the good for Chinc’s Workshop and its future new business prospects, the real winner here is clearly the family. Given the studied elegance of their abode, coupled with its innovative and thoughtful use of space, light and design, how could any family not thrive in so accommodating a locale?</p>
