<p>New Year, new hopes, and a little luck in design. We meet furniture showroom director and home lifestyle curator Tony Luk a week before the Lunar New Year. The festive season has long been associated with the tradition of buying something new – clothing, homeware, furniture – to usher in luck and prosperity. Yet, Luk admits that the practice has evolved over the years. “It’s been tough for us, but it’s gaining some traction now,” he says with a hopeful smile. “I hope business continues to only go up from here.”</p>

<p>Despite current challenges, Luk remains optimistic about the future, confident that momentum will grow. His resilience mirrors the very essence of the design world, constant evolution and renewal, just like the art and architecture he so passionately champions.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Drawn to Creativity</h3>



<p>Luk’s adventure in the world of design started long before he debuted his prestigious interiors spaces, Louvre Galley and Andante, at the Design Showcase in Ruttonjee Centre, Central. During his childhood in Hong Kong, he was captivated by drawing, a talent that sprouted from an innate curiosity. “In primary school, I enjoyed sketching, but it was more about exploring my inner self,” he recalls. It wasn’t until secondary school that his passion deepened.</p>

<p>Joining the school Art Club in his first year, he discovered a love for capturing images, particularly through film photography. “Photography inspired me to pay attention to details, geometry, colour, and how light and shade interplay,” he explains. These foundational elements would later become the building blocks of his design philosophy – an eye for precision, harmony and aesthetic subtlety, rooted in his early artistic explorations.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Building Foundations</h3>



<p>Luk’s initial ambition was to become an architect, a dream sparked by his fascination with cityscapes and buildings. “Photography probably played a role here, too,” he notes. “I was mesmerised by the imposing structures around the city; how they ‘spoke’ to each other and to the people.” He headed to the UK to study the subject.</p>

<p>To him, architecture is a form of art – large-scale, impactful and intimately connected to society. It is a dialogue between form and function, beauty and utility. His experience working on the design of the new Hong Kong International Airport in the 1990s further expanded this perspective. “Being involved from the very beginning was a huge catalyst,” says Luk, who returned to Hong Kong&nbsp; to join the project. “It helped me understand how architecture can be both grand and human, technical yet poetic.”</p>

<p>Working alongside global experts in aviation design, he gained insights into how public architecture balances aesthetics with practicality. This experience laid the groundwork for his later pursuit of interior and lifestyle design – fields where he could bring art closer to people’s everyday lives.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">High-flying Interiors</h3>



<p>Post-Chek Lap Kok, Luk faced a pivotal decision: continue with large-scale projects or focus on something more personal? “I wanted to get ‘closer’ to the end-users,” he says of his shift towards intimate design. “Interior-design projects tend to be shorter in cycle and more directly impact people’s daily lives.”</p>

<p>He began working with European furniture brands, notably Italian design company Minotti, which caught his eye for its blend of contemporary elegance and craftsmanship. He became the firm’s exclusive authorised dealer in Hong Kong and Macau, and Andante was born in 2004. A curated space where modern design meets sophisticated lifestyle, the flagship showroom spans two floors and 600 square metres. This inviting sanctuary is filled with carefully selected collections that embody Luk’s core philosophy of supreme quality, subtle style and timeless sophistication.</p>

<p>Located next door to Louvre Gallery, which was established in 1997, Andante has become a beacon of contemporary Italian and European design spanning furniture, lighting, home accessories and glass art. Beyond Minotti, it showcases names such as Venini, Bomma, Kose, SkLO, Tato, Nahoor, Venicem, Lumen Center, Purho, An&amp;angel and Darmes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reflection of the Times</h3>



<p>To Luk, “contemporary design” is more than just a style; it’s a reflection of the era. “It’s a time reference,” he explains. “Every period has its own contemporary expression. What was once ‘contemporary’ might eventually become ‘classical’ or ‘vintage’.” He believes that modern lifestyles – individualistic, flexible and urban – shape the evolution of design. “Contemporary design must mirror these lifestyles,” he says. “It should offer clean lines, quieter luxury, modest details and adaptability.”</p>

<p>He emphasises that art plays a vital role in interior spaces. “Historically, art was often an afterthought, something to ‘decorate’ walls at the end,” he notes. However, during the Covid pandemic, Luk rethought this approach. “Art should be integrated from the very beginning of the design process,” he declares. “In our Art Andante initiative, we now showcase how art can lead and inspire interior design, creating a complete ambience that is both aesthetic and emotional.”</p>

<p>The concept of art as an integral part of design is central to Luk’s philosophy. “It’s about creating a dialogue between art and interior,” he explains. “Art doesn’t just decorate a space; it defines it.” This holistic perspective involves artworks, decorative items and furnishings curated to work in harmony, elevating the entire environment.</p>

<p>“During Covid, I realised that art could even lead the design concept,” he says. “Now, we aim for a 360-degree experience, where art is conceived alongside furniture and lighting, not just appended at the end.” This innovative approach has garnered appreciation from clients who seek spaces that are not only stylish but deeply meaningful, spaces that tell stories and evoke emotions.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Style of His Own</h3>



<p>The personality of this accomplished photographer shines through as we photograph him. It’s apparent that he’s an easy-going boss and fun-loving entrepreneur, with a passion for the finer things in life “Is this Richard Gere enough for you?” he jokes, referencing the iconic Pretty Woman film poster as he poses for the camera. His staff cheer him on, proud of their leader’s vision and charisma.</p>

<p>Relentless activist, best-selling author, award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker, inspirational speaker, philanthropist, investment advisor – Sylvia Yu Friedman is running out of hyphens to add to her name, with each title building on the last. Yet none fully capture the woman who has dedicated her life to amplifying the voiceless while embracing her own multifaceted identity. Is it all too much of a mouthful? Maybe, but each one represents a layer of a life dedicated to impact.</p>

<p>As the aromatic scent of a perfectly blended coffee wafts temptingly over our alfresco breakfast setting at The Murray, she announces to the world: “I need my morning booster.” Twenty minutes later, her coffee remains untouched as she passionately discusses her transition from a safe corporate world to a fearless champion of women subjected to sex trafficking. Despite the glitz and glamour that sometimes surround her, it is clear there is more beneath the surface – a deeper purpose that drives her every move.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Pain to Power</h3>



<p>Born in Vancouver to Korean immigrant parents, young Sylvia faced racism “long before it was widely acknowledged”. “Adults and kids called me a ‘chink’, and I was mocked for my food and culture,” she recalls.&nbsp; “I was mortified and ashamed of my heritage, which led me to disconnect from my roots.” At 12, she vowed to suppress her Korean identity and blend into a predominantly white society.</p>

<p>This early racial prejudice ignited her passion for social justice, but her journey of self-acceptance was a long and winding road. It was decades later, while living in Beijing and travelling to remote Chinese villages, that she rediscovered her roots: “It was a full circle, and I began to embrace my Korean heritage again, especially through the lens of Korean dramas and storytelling.” Her early anguish became her greatest superpower. “The area of your greatest pain is often your greatest strength,” she asserts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Standing Up for All</h3>



<p>Friedman’s relationship with her father was fraught with gender bias. “He treated me like the son he never had,” she explains. “I felt I had to prove my worth through achievement. It was exhausting, and I felt an ongoing identity crisis as a woman.” A breakthrough came when a mentor urged her to forgive her father and embrace her identity. That act of forgiveness kindled her determination to uplift women and fight gender inequality across Asia.</p>

<p>Her advocacy is rooted in her own experiences and her unwavering belief that – quoting US civil-rights activist Maya Angelou – “each woman standing up for herself is standing up for all women”. Her message to women everywhere: forgive, recognise your strengths, celebrate your unique identity, and pursue your purpose without fear.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Champion of the Oppressed / Empowerment Spools</h3>



<p>Yu Friedman’s career reads like a daring adventure novel. She’s interviewed traffickers, followed undercover police, and risked her life infiltrating dangerous locales. “I’ve experienced the underbelly of human trafficking – criminals, pimps, victims – and lived to talk about it,” she says with a mix of awe and resolve. Documenting stories of suffering and resilience has taken her across China, Southeast Asia and beyond.</p>

<p>Her investigative journalism on modern slavery in China, Hong Kong and Thailand culminated in a documentary series, which earned her wide recognition and a 2013 International Human Rights Press Award in Hong Kong; her 2015 book, Silenced No More: Voices of Comfort Women, enabled survivors of Japanese military sex slavery to be heard. “Those encounters enlarged my heart and transformed my purpose,” she notes. “Helping the overlooked and the oppressed gives my life profound meaning.”</p>

<p>Each chapter of her 2021 memoir, A Long Road to Justice, detailing her front-line experiences in Asia, is a testament to fortitude and hope. One of her most harrowing moments occurred while filming in China. Surrounded by traffickers and thugs, she managed to delete incriminating footage just in time, her life flashing before her. “It made me realise what trafficked women go through daily,” she reflects. “That moment birthed my life’s mission: to use my influence to fight slavery and exploitation.”</p>

<p>Her resilience was tested during her investigations. During one terrifying night infiltrating a brothel, she recalls deleting footage under threat, feeling faint and experiencing her first miracle: the police arriving just in time. That event profoundly shifted her perspective. “True freedom comes from serving others,” she declares.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Money for Good</h3>



<p>Beyond writing books and consulting for an investment company in Seoul, Yu Friedman serves as a strategic advisor to philanthropists and influential families, a role that requires balancing influence with responsibility. “Supporting philanthropists means providing honest feedback and respecting confidentiality,” she explains. “Some families impact me greatly – like the one that bought homes for their staff or the anonymous donors who give quietly but generously.”</p>

<p>She recounts meeting a Hong Kong family of limited means who exemplified genuine generosity. “Their happiness and humility touched me deeply,” she shares. “Discretion and authenticity are the true marks of leadership.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Righting Gender Wrongs</h3>



<p>Her latest non-fiction book, Fearless: A Guide to Freedom and Fulfilling Your Fullest Potential, published in 2024, is a heartfelt guide for young women and changemakers. Her core message: embrace your identity, learn from adversity, and dare to dream big. “I wish I had known these lessons earlier,” she confides. “Your most painful experiences are often your greatest teachers; suffering can build resilience, grit and wisdom.”</p>

<p>An unwavering advocate for women’s empowerment, she highlights the stark realities of gender inequality – pay gaps, underrepresentation and societal biases. “Women still earn less, have fewer leadership opportunities and face discrimination,” she says. “Feminism must evolve to ensure true equality, especially in Asia, where cultural norms often hinder progress.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Legacy of Love</h3>



<p>For this relentless campaigner, happiness is rooted in inner peace, purpose and compassion. “I’ve learned to slow down and prioritise relationships,” reveals Yu Friedman. “Forgiveness and self-love liberated me from the past.” She defines success as cultivating meaningful connections and giving back to the marginalised. “Success is about relationships, impact and leaving a legacy of love and hope,” she notes.</p>

<p>Throughout her work, she relies on her spiritual faith. “My Christian faith sustains me during the darkest moments,” she says. “It reminds me that light can overcome darkness, and love can conquer hate.”</p>

<p>Love plays a central role in her life, both personally and professionally. Her husband, Matt Friedman, an internationally renowned human-trafficking expert, is the founder of The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organisation that engages the private sector to address modern slavery; she serves as its Ambassador and voluntary fundraiser. She believes that leading with love creates safe, empowering environments. “When we lead with kindness, we unlock potential,” she affirms.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Heroes for Today</h3>



<p>Friedman aspires to continue transforming stories into powerful media, envisioning a future where the Korean entertainment industry leads the way globally. Her plans include producing films and TV series that challenge stereotypes and showcase Asian women as heroes and role models. Through such powerful stories, she hopes to inspire the next generation and motivate others to use their talents and influence for good.</p>

<p>Notably, she is quick to appreciate the good and hard work of others. During an outfit change during our shoot, she is fervent in her praise of a helpful member of the hotel staff, asking if she can write a commendation letter to their manager. “That’s my way of saying thank you,” she explains. “Even small acts of kindness matter.”</p>

<p>Jessi Chloe Chen breezes into the restaurant just a few minutes past the agreed time for our cosy pre-shoot lunch. Though no apologies are needed, the multi-industry brand consultant flashes a warm smile, explaining that she’s busy juggling a relatively new, incredibly meaningful role. She recently added being a mum to her many responsibilities. Over seasonal tasting plates, we dive straight into parenting advice, swapping stories about sleepless nights, first smiles, and the tiny everyday miracles that make the chaos worthwhile.</p>

<p>Chen is clearly committed to this new chapter in her multitasking lifestyle. Her face lights up at every mention of her baby daughter. Motherhood isn’t something she fits around her work; it’s the heartbeat around which everything else pulses. “My daughter just turned seven months old, and so much of my happiness comes from her,” she enthuses. “Seeing the world through her eyes, travelling together, experiencing firsts as a family are all very special.&#8221;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Boundless Horizons</h3>



<p>Travel is second nature to Chen, and it shaped her own childhood. She grew up between Hong Kong and Melbourne, a true third-culture kid navigating two vibrant but vastly different worlds. “It meant learning two very different cultures and ways of living early,” she reflects. Melbourne grounded her with practical life skills and resilience in spaces where she didn&#8217;t always fit in, while Hong Kong instilled ambition, efficiency and high standards – “things can be done quickly and well here,” she affirms.</p>

<p>Attending international schools honed her ability to translate between worlds, adjusting her communication to connect with anyone from any background. This cross-cultural fluency informs her business approach today: “It really helped to shape my worldview and carry multiple perspectives at once, giving me a more global perspective.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Curiosity Over Convention</h3>



<p>Chen’s 15-year career in Hong Kong defies neat boxes, spanning fashion, property, luxury, floristry and advocacy. What drives her to leap across such diverse fields? “I&#8217;ve never followed a traditional path; it has always been about relationships,” she explains. “When an opportunity comes along, or I’m considering starting something, I ask myself: am I genuinely interested, can I be useful, and can I learn quickly? If it’s a yes to all three, I’ll usually give it a good crack.”</p>

<p>Building expertise in reading trends and momentum, she began leading sales and marketing at a contemporary fashion brand, then moved into real estate as Managing Director of Fuin, overseeing branding, operations and strategy. Entrepreneurship had come knocking in 2017 with Andrsn, the artisanal online florist that pioneered boxed roses in Hong Kong. As co-founder and Creative Director, she turned a passion for minimalist design and Australian-imported blooms into a market leader.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Meaningful Shift</h3>



<p>In her current role as Asia-Pacific Director of Onda, the luxury membership platform, Chen is at the forefront of hospitality’s evolution. “Luxury has been shifting from ‘more’ to ‘meaningful’ for a while now,” she observes. “Time and health are the ultimate form of luxury.”</p>

<p>Onda curates access to the world&#8217;s most&nbsp; desirable private members&#8217; clubs and exclusive programming where you’re known before arrival. Members crave personalisation over excess, with wellness – longevity, recovery, everyday care – taking centre stage. “The sweet spot [in this field] is curated environments where the community fit feels natural, aligning members with places that match their taste and the experience feels effortless.&#8221;</p>

<p>How does she juggle the business hats of director, consultant and entrepreneur with those of wife and mother? “I don’t think balance exists. At least not all at once,” she admits candidly. “Anyone claiming they’re winning in every area, every day, is lying! Something always gives.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Anchors That Matter</h3>



<p>Her secret? Prioritising ruthlessly: “My anchors are family, health and top work priorities – the rest orbits around them.” She schedules self-care like she would a meeting – Sunday resets, evenings after her daughter sleeps – and guards her mental wellbeing fiercely. “When I&#8217;m in a good place, everything else flows.”</p>

<p>Since 2018, she has been Managing Partner at Talking Mental, a mental-health initiative founded by longtime friend Aaron Stadlin-Robbie. Her advocacy stems from personal experience: “I had experienced panic attacks and anxiety in the past, and I know how lonely the search for help can feel.”</p>

<p>She helps create approachable conversations, panels and partnerships to reduce stigma and improve access. “If we can make these conversations feel normal and easier to navigate, we’re doing something good,” she says.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Grace and Grit</h3>



<p>What does being a leader mean in today’s tough environment? “Leadership for me is providing clarity, being prepared and accountable,” she explains. “Staying calm, not being reactive, and moving a team towards solutions.” Boundaries are essential, but so is being pleasant to work with – “one thing that is overlooked too often”.</p>

<p>Her advice to young women aspiring to lead is “just start, even if you don’t feel ready”. She elaborates: “You can’t perfect something you haven&#8217;t tried; you learn the most by being in the thick of it. And through that process, your definition of success will evolve as you do.”</p>

<p>For Chen, success is fluid and ever-evolving. “I rarely feel truly ‘successful’ and I’m comfortable with that. A little healthy dissatisfaction keeps me learning and ambitious,” she shares. What she chases most is daily gratitude and pride in progress across life’s facets.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bringers of Joy</h3>



<p>During challenges, she recharges through people. It’s no surprise when she declares, “I’m a people person. Speaking with my closest friends and mentors resets my perspective and keeps me moving.”</p>

<p>She finds happiness in “the small, consistent quiet moments that are closest to you. These are the ones that matter most.” It’s a beautifully simple philosophy, and right now, much of that joy flows from her daughter.</p>

<p>At the end of our shoot, jokingly reminding the crew to make her more elegant and eloquent, Chen’s candidness and excitement are palatable. She’s thrilled to head home to join her husband and be with their child. She arrived a touch late because of motherhood’s joyful demands, and she rushes off for the same reason. Her rhythm of life these days equates to one small, perfect milestone at a time.</p>

<p>Rewind to 2013 in Hong Kong, and Steven Lam is staring at a stack of takeaway boxes, sweating bullets because booking a van feels like negotiating with a secret society. “We needed vans to deliver our takeaway boxes to restaurants, and the process was a nightmare,” he recalls, flashing his trademark grin. “We’d call a radio-dispatch centre, get a ridiculously high quote, and have no idea if the driver would even show up. It was inefficient and opaque.” Having heard the same story from others, he realised “everyone had a van-hailing horror story. That’s when the lightbulb went on: if we could fix this for ourselves, we could fix it for the entire city.”</p>

<p>This is the origin of GoGoX – formerly GoGoVan – Asia’s answer to Uber but for delivery, boxes and basically anything that needs to move without the drama. Lam, co-founder and self-proclaimed ‘Cheap Everything Officer’ (CEO), has turned that headache into a logistics powerhouse operating in 370 cities – from China and South Korea to Singapore, Vietnam and India. It was Hong Kong&#8217;s first unicorn, born from a 2017 merger with Chinese freight giant 58 Suyun, and now boasts 7 million registered drivers.</p>

<p>But Steven Lam’s story is no overnight success. It’s a tale of grit, gaffes and going all in, told with the kind of humour that makes you laugh while learning.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kowloon Cram</h3>



<p>It starts in Kowloon public housing, a concrete jungle where life was more shared spoon than silver spoon. “Growing up in a public-housing estate teaches you two things very quickly: resourcefulness and the importance of community,” says Lam, chuckling like he’s reminiscing about a quirky family reunion. “You learn that nothing is handed to you, and that if you want something, you have to figure out a way to earn it or build it. Space is limited, resources are shared, and you see firsthand how small efficiencies can make a big difference in people’s daily lives.”</p>

<p>It’s the kind of upbringing that turns kids into mini-entrepreneurs. Lam’s business vibe is frugal, folksy and focused on fixing real messes. “Business wasn’t some abstract concept I learned in a classroom; it was about solving real, practical problems for real people,” he adds. “It taught me to be frugal, to be scrappy, and to never underestimate the power of a simple solution to a common frustration.”</p>

<p>High school didn’t end with confetti for young Steven. After bombing Hong Kong’s public exams, he ditched the script and headed to the US for community college. “My results weren’t what I had hoped for, and for a moment, it felt like the traditional path to success was closed to me,” he admits, with the honesty of someone who’s turned lemons into a logistics empire. “But instead of seeing it as a failure, it became a crucial turning point. It forced me to be honest with myself and realise that there had to be more than one way to build a future.&#8221;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">American Hustle</h3>



<p>Stateside, it was all about reinvention. “Nobody there cared about my past exam scores; all that mattered was the effort I put in each day,” he notes. “It was incredibly humbling and empowering at the same time.” He later funded his degree in business administration at the University of California, Berkeley by flipping second-hand iPhones and bikes – pure hustle. “That experience taught me that your starting point doesn’t define your destination. It taught me resilience and proved that with hard work, you can create your own second chances.”</p>

<p>Enter GoGoVan co-founders Reeve Kwan and Nick Tang, his university ride or dies. “Looking back, the most important thing was that I wasn’t facing these financial pressures alone,” he shares. “The key to overcoming them was the friends who were right there with me.”</p>

<p>Reselling iPhones “was our first real business together, our way of earning our first pot of gold,” he laughs. &#8220;That experience taught us so much more than just how to make a profit. It taught us how to hustle, how to solve problems on the fly, and most importantly, how to trust each other completely when the stakes were high.” Three guys in a dorm, haggling over gadgets, forged the trust that built GoGoX.</p>

<p>At Berkeley, Lam soaked up big ideas, but real lessons came from slinging food at a San Francisco Chinese restaurant. “They were two sides of the same coin,” he quips. “UC Berkeley gave me the framework – the theories, the economic principles. It taught me what was possible. The Chinese restaurant, on the other hand, taught me raw, unfiltered business. It was about customer service, inventory management, cash flow and teamwork under pressure, all in real-time.” It&#8217;s where the GoGoX seed sprouted – delivering food, spotting gaps.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Thinking Beyond Boxes</h3>



<p>Back in Hong Kong, Lam launched BoxAd, selling adverts on takeaway meal boxes. “BoxAd was my real-world MBA,&#8221; he says. “It taught me essential lessons about sales, rejection, and the hustle required to get that first ‘yes’.” But the gold was in the grit: dealing with van bookings exposed logistics lunacy. “Every day, I was on the street, not just selling ads but also hiring vans to deliver the boxes. I spent hours talking to drivers, hearing directly about their struggles.”</p>

<p>Thus, with HK$20,000 in savings, GoGoVan was born. “Those conversations and relationships were the true foundation of the company, and I’m still in touch with some of the very first driver-partners,” reveals Lam. “My philosophy is that every step in your journey has a purpose. BoxAd wasn’t a setback; it was the catalyst.”</p>

<p>Scaling was epic. “First, convincing the first 100 drivers … [but] once we had that initial critical mass, the network effect started,” he recounts. Funding, merger, IPO – boom. As Cheap Everything Officer, he balances bargains with brilliance. “The title started as an inside joke [reflecting early penny-pinching]. But ‘cheap’ doesn&#8217;t mean low quality. It means being relentlessly efficient.” AI routes keep costs low, and quality high.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">GoGo Further</h3>



<p>“In the beginning, success was survival. Today, my definition [of the concept] is about impact.” Being named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader last year widened his worldview. “It connects you with leaders. This has influenced my vision for GoGoX to be more than just a logistics company.”</p>

<p>What fuels him? “The world of logistics is still incredibly inefficient. That puzzle continues to fascinate me,” he says. Plus, responsibility to stakeholders. Happiness? “For me, happiness is the feeling you get when you are engaged in solving a meaningful problem with people you trust.”</p>

<p>His plan for GoGoX is to innovate with AI, expand in Southeast Asia, and go green with EVs. “Within the logistics industry, I hope our legacy is that we proved technology could democratise access. In the broader community, I hope my story serves as an example. [Given] the sheer scale of the opportunity [though], we have only scratched the surface.&#8221;</p>

<p>And there it loops back: from that van-booking nightmare to reimagining Asia’s moves, Lam turned frustration into fortune, proving that sometimes, the best way to go forward is to fix what’s holding everyone back. In Hong Kong, where deliveries seem endless, he’s the guy who made “go” mean something magical.</p>

<p>When we arrive at LOST’s Causeway Bay outlet on a sunny autumnal morning, the atmosphere is unexpectedly peaceful. Nuzzled among the mass of commercial and retail buildings that converge into a narrow path, the space exudes an almost surreal calm. Rick Woo, co-founder of the rapidly expanding escape-room enterprise, welcomes us with a warm smile and an unusual offer: a shot of whisky, his go-to drink, to give the production team a liquid-energy boost. We laugh, accepting the toast to creativity, and step inside.</p>

<p>As Woo leads us up a steep set of stairs and along deserted rooms on the upper floors, it’s easy to feel like we’ve entered an alien laboratory or a Wild-West hideout. The walls are alive with colours, evoking a sense of wonder and curiosity. One escape room resembles an American diner, nostalgic and lively; another hints at a prison cell, dark and mysterious.</p>

<p>Dressed in a loose black-and-white ensemble, Woo is effortlessly chic, embodying the spirit of a lively storyteller and innovator. Though now approaching 50, he could pass for someone 20 years younger, perhaps due to all that cardio (see his content on Strava and Instagram), or maybe because of his surroundings, a playground of imagination, where every corner tells a story.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Young Puzzle Master</h3>



<p>Woo’s journey into the world of immersive entertainment began long before LOST’s 2013 launch. His childhood in Hong Kong revolved around a love for problem-solving. “I grew up fascinated by puzzles and mysteries, and I loved solving problems that seemed impossible,” he recalls. “As a kid, I often created small games for my friends using paper clues and homemade locks. I didn’t realise it then, but I was already designing ‘escape games’ in my own way.”</p>

<p>His parents, small business owners, played a significant role in shaping his mindset. “Watching them taught me perseverance, responsibility and creativity in finding solutions when things didn’t go as planned,” the University of South Australia alumnus says. “That blend of curiosity and entrepreneurial thinking is what set the foundation for everything I’ve done.”</p>

<p>By 2013, after working in the telecommunication industry in Hong Kong and Melbourne, Woo’s ambition was clear – to bring the thrill of escape rooms to his home city and beyond. “Escape games were almost unheard of in Asia back then,” he explains. “I wanted to create something that didn’t just entertain but challenged the mind and connected people. The idea was simple: bring stories to life through immersive experiences where players could feel like the heroes of their own adventures.”</p>

<p>LOST was born from this vision: a space where people could ‘get lost’ in the moment, forget about their phones, and rediscover the joy of teamwork and problem-solving. The concept resonated quickly, and the brand burgeoned; it now operates 14 outlets worldwide. Yet, Woo’s journey was only just beginning.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Power of Curiosity</h3>



<p>Travelling and engaging with diverse cultures broadened his perspective. “Meeting people from different backgrounds taught me that curiosity is universal,” he notes. “Whether in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia or the Philippines, people love to explore and challenge themselves.”</p>

<p>His personal transition from a tech enthusiast to an entrepreneur helped bridge the physical and digital worlds. “LOST keeps evolving because we respect local culture but also use global creativity to connect everyone through play and storytelling,” he explains. This blend of cultural sensitivity and innovative technology has been key to the brand’s global success.</p>

<p>Building an international chain had its hurdles. “In the beginning, many didn’t understand what an escape room was,” he admits. “We had to educate the market from zero.” Scaling the business across different countries, maintaining quality, and ensuring creative consistency were daunting tasks. “The key was building a passionate team who shared the same belief: to let the world fall in love with creative problem-solving,” he says.</p>

<p>Every obstacle was turned into a puzzle, each challenge an opportunity to innovate. “We approached every difficulty with the mindset of a game designer,” he laughs. “If you get stuck, you just need to find the next clue.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">New Realities</h3>



<p>LOST’s evolution into a multifaceted ecosystem was driven by a simple question: how can the experience become more meaningful? This led to the birth of LOST Junior, LOST Studio and LOST Island. Each initiative embodies Woo’s core philosophy of creativity, learning and connection. Looking ahead, he envisions a future where entertainment, education and technology are seamlessly integrated.</p>

<p>“The future lies in blending worlds,” he says. “AR, blockchain and interactive storytelling will make learning experiential, engaging and personalised. Imagine classrooms where students create and live their own adventures.”</p>

<p>He is most excited about innovations in AI, AR and mixed reality. “Games that adapt to your behaviour, puzzles that evolve with your intelligence – these will transform how we learn, teach and connect,” he predicts, viewing technology as a tool to expand creativity and foster a new era of immersive storytelling.</p>

<p>His vision for LOST has expanded from physical spaces to ecosystems that merge online and offline worlds. “Our mission remains the same: to make the world fall in love with creative problem-solving,” he affirms.</p>

<p>For Woo, joy comes from seeing people smile after solving a puzzle, or witnessing a child’s confidence bloom during a LOST Junior adventure. “The moment of ‘Aha!’, that’s happiness,” he says. Success, he believes, is measured by impact. “When LOST inspires people to think differently, learn creatively and connect meaningfully, that’s true success.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">More to be Found</h3>



<p>Woo harbours plans for further expansion across Asia and onto other continents, aiming for 30 branches within three years. R&amp;D investments in digital tokens, creator tools and AR experiences are already underway. “LOST will evolve into a global hub for creativity, education and innovation,” he envisions.</p>

<p>His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Start with why. Don’t chase trends. Solve real human problems and never fear failure. Every mistake is just another puzzle to solve.”</p>

<p>He believes the most important skill participants gain is creative problem-solving. “In life and business, there’s rarely a single right answer,” he says. “LOST trains you to observe, think laterally, and work with others under pressure – skills that are vital in the real world.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Final Scene</h3>



<p>He finds fulfilment in inspiring others; seeing children design their first game or a team rediscover the power of collaboration. “My legacy? I want LOST to be a global symbol of creativity, education, and unity,” he declares. “I hope more people fall in love with solving problems, not avoiding them.”</p>

<p>As we both utter “that’s a wrap!”, Woo’s world feels like stepping into a movie, an experience as meta as that sounds. It’s reminiscent of the final scene in Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the golden chest is sealed inside a wooden crate, wheeled through a cavernous warehouse, and stored away from enemies. The end credits roll, and the adventure pauses, waiting for the next chapter.</p>

<p>Leta Ng has just finished her hair and makeup when we step into her suite at the Grand Hyatt. The celebrated Hong Kong-based Singapore-born jewellery designer is adjusting a lighter shade of hosiery that doesn’t quite match her outfit; a detail most wouldn’t notice, but Ng is all about precision. Sunny afternoon light spills through the window, casting a gentle glow on her flawless features. Today, she’s dressed in a fully embroidered, beaded gown that whispers luxury, accessorised with a vintage watch, a striking necklace and earrings that could tell stories of centuries.</p>

<p>Ng is poised, yet her energy radiates a playful confidence. As she adjusts her hair absentmindedly, we realise this is someone who embodies the art of meticulousness, someone for whom every detail matters, and yet, she radiates effortless grace.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Jewels of Inspiration</h3>



<p>Growing up, young Leta’s world was filled with glamour and creativity. “My parents always encouraged creativity,” she recalls. “But my greatest inspiration was my uncle, the renowned artist Jimmy Lin Chong.” The Taiwanese actor, who passed away last summer, would design exquisite party and evening dresses for his young nieces, sparking her love for aesthetics. “I loved drawing from a young age,” she shares, eyes twinkling. “Winning a kindergarten prize for a cat drawing felt like the start of everything.”</p>

<p>Her childhood memories are a mosaic of art and glamour, woven through her upbringing. These early influences laid the foundation for her passion. She emphasises how being surrounded by beauty and artistry from an early age made her view the world through a creative lens. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about storytelling, identity and self-expression.</p>

<p>Her nomadic childhood, living in Singapore, Canada, Belgium, Bermuda and beyond, further shaped her perspective. “Each culture I’ve experienced has added unique styles and traditions to my creative toolbox,” she explains. “My work naturally becomes a bridge; mixing, translating and creating something new that feels both fresh and deeply familiar.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Finance to Finery</h3>



<p>Ng’s journey was anything but linear, though. She chose to study finance and investment, a training that now informs her design process. “I blend artistic vision with analytical discipline,” she explains. “It’s about balancing beauty with structure, ensuring each piece is both stunning and enduring.”</p>

<p>&nbsp;“Life’s journey is full of joyful surprises,” she admits. “Trading financial spreadsheets for gemstones was a twist of fate. But it made sense, as precision is everything. In finance, a decimal point changes everything; in gemmology, a fraction of a millimetre transforms how light dances within a stone.”</p>

<p>Her lifelong passion for gemstones was reignited when her husband, Paul Lau, then Legal Director, Europe of GE Capital, was posted to Belgium. Antwerp’s legacy as the diamond-cutting capital of the world drew her into a new realm, one of sparkle, precision and age-old craft. She pursued formal studies at GIA and the HK Institute of Gemmology, deepening her understanding of the stones she now crafts into art.</p>

<p>Ng’s jewellery is renowned for its boldness and innovation. Unapologetically expressive and fiercely authentic, it is meant to empower the wearer. “Every piece tells a story,” she affirms. “My collections are built on a simple truth: you are one of a kind.”</p>

<p>Her early ‘Big, Bold and Beautiful’ collection in 2012-13 epitomised this philosophy. “It was about confidence in oneself,” she affirms. “A modern classic rooted in heritage and earth.” Jadeite carved into statement pieces, set with diamonds and semi-precious stones, became her signature. The choice of jadeite is no accident. “Beyond its beauty, jadeite carries centuries of belief in luck, healing and protection,” she notes.</p>

<p>The ‘Blossoms of Joy’ collection was inspired by the delicate fleeting beauty of natural blooms. “Joy in the natural world,” she states. “A poetic whisper of fleeting beauty.” Her ‘Love is Ultimate’ collection, crafted in trinity gold – white, yellow and rose – symbolises faith, hope and love. “Love is the greatest gift,” she emphasises. “From confidence to intimacy, these collections deepen and expand the celebration of beauty, connecting the physical, emotional and spiritual.”</p>

<p>Travel is a vital part of Ng’s creative process. “Travel sparks my creativity,” she says. “Immersing myself in local art and traditions gives me a rich palette of techniques, symbols and aesthetics.” She reinterprets ancient motifs, be they from the emerald kingdoms of Colombia, the exotic orient of Istanbul, or the Byzantine isles of Greece, blending them into contemporary designs that honour heritage while embracing innovation.</p>

<p>To Ng, jewellery is both art and investment. “The artistic value lies in the uniqueness of the design, the heritage behind each piece, and the craftsmanship,” she explains. “As an investment, the quality of gemstones and metals matters most.” She favours the exclusivity of one-of-a-kind pieces, which “makes them precious, both in value and sentiment”.</p>

<p>Her approach is rooted in passion. “My artistic voice always leads,” she affirms. “Commercial sense informs but never dictates. I create for the love of beauty and craft, trusting that passion will find its audience.” For newcomers to jewellery design, she advocates gaining formal gemmological knowledge, studying auction trends and consulting experts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Art, Culture and Community</h3>



<p>Ng’s role as Vice-Chair of the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art underscores her belief in art’s power to foster community. “A gemstone is a canvas, and design is the artistry,” she reflects. “A finished piece is a story of culture, worn close to the heart.” She sees jewellery and art as vessels of collective memory, tangible links to heritage, identity and shared values.</p>

<p>Exemplifying her dedication to elevating Hong Kong’s cultural presence, she is involved in the Hong Kong exhibition for May’s Venice Biennale, which the Hong Kong Museum of Art is co-organising. “Supporting this milestone is about showcasing Hong Kong’s artistic journey,” she shares. “It’s exciting to be part of a global dialogue that celebrates our city’s creative spirit.”</p>



<p>Looking ahead, she is eager to explore new collections and collaborations. “I want to push boundaries and celebrate individuality,” she states. Her personal definitions of happiness and success have evolved. “Fulfilment and purpose are key,” she says softly. “Having navigated different chapters, I now find joy in giving back to the community that gave me so much. Hong Kong has been my home for over 18 years, [thus] I choose to invest my time and energy back into this vibrant city.”</p>

<p>Ng’s membership in La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs underscores her appreciation for culinary culture. “It’s about fellowship, excellence and service,” she explains. Her father-in-law, Dato Lau Foo Sun, was the founder Bailli Délégué (president) of the association’s Malaysian chapter, and she upholds the Lau family heritage of conviviality and shared passion.</p>

<p>Before leaving, we share a leisurely high tea, discussing pastries, motherhood and life’s puzzles. “Motherhood, it keeps puzzling me,” admits the mum of 1, Katarina, smiling. “It’s a very complex job, but a very rewarding one, definitely.”</p>

<p>Humour is her secret weapon; during the shoot, she tries goofy poses, laughs at herself, and admits she’s not a fan of public speaking. “I apologise, really,” she deadpans. “I will never get used to talking in front of a camera.”</p>

The Artful Alchemist: A journey from childhood sketches to global glamour, Leta Ng’s life is with a touch of jade and a dash of daring

<p>Edwin Lee is a family man, as indicated by the many photos displayed in his airy home at Chung Hom Kok overlooking serene mountains and water. His passion for work also radiates in every word he speaks. During our interview, he momentarily pauses to grab a pen and paper and draw a Venn diagram containing customers, competitors and capabilities. “I’m usually good at explaining things with visual aids,” says one of Hong Kong’s largest shop landlords. Lee’s dreams of work and family overlap every day.</p>



<p>The founder of Bridgeway Prime Shop Fund Management has plenty of credits at his doorstep. “I was the first and the youngest non-American chairman for IBBA,” he recalls, a proud smile lighting up his face as he mentions the International Business Brokers Association, an august body headquartered in the US Mid-West. “The challenge I faced was to demonstrate my knowledge of the business-brokerage industry in America and worldwide at an organisation set up a long time ago, back in 1984. Gaining respect from over 2,000 members – many of them much older than me – was no small feat.”</p>



<p>His path to leadership was fuelled by a desire to prove himself; a young, ambitious man navigating a predominantly American industry, eager to leave a mark. &#8220;Back then, I had to show that I knew my stuff, not just in Hong Kong but globally,&#8221; he explains, emphasising that perseverance and confidence were essential in crossing cultural and professional boundaries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dreaming of Riches</h3>



<p>Lee’s childhood was rooted in resilience. He was born in Kowloon to a father from India and a mother from China, and his family journey was marked by upheaval and hope. “I remember watching Pretty Woman when I was young,” he shares, eyes twinkling. “Richard Gere was an investment banker doing M&amp;A and IPOs, and I just thought that looked pretty cool. I wanted to be that guy – the rich, successful banker.”</p>



<p>That childhood inspiration led him into finance. He joined Credit Suisse First Boston in 1997, but life had other plans. “After 9/11, I was fired,” he says quietly. “That’s when I came back to Hong Kong and decided to start my own business.” With his father’s advice echoing in his mind – that each sibling should carve their own path, separate from family affairs – he established a business-brokerage and consultancy firm in 2001, which evolved into Bridgeway, the first Securities and Future Commission-licenced fund management focusing exclusively on shop properties investment.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Harvard Turnaround</h3>



<p>Lee emphasises that his academic background has been a cornerstone of his success. “Making difficult decisions requires a solid foundation of business theories,” he states. “My DBA [Doctorate in Business Administration] from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and CFA, CPA, and MRICS certifications [in investment management, accounting and property] give me the confidence to act decisively.” His education provides the tools to navigate market fluctuations and complex decisions, an essential trait for his leadership style.</p>

<p>Life changed profoundly while undertaking his Owner/President Management (OPM) programme at Harvard Business School in 2012-14. “The industry is like the horse; raising the horse is more important than the jockey,” he reflects. Before Harvard, he was immersed in business brokerage – buying and selling more than 1,000 small businesses. Afterwards, he transitioned into property, specifically retail shops in Hong Kong.</p>



<p>“Business brokerage is a bad industry, like a horse with broken legs,” he explains. “But real estate, especially shops, has much better legs. With a good industry and a strong horse, the jockey (me) can reach the destination faster.” That insight was a turning point, transforming his career and setting him on a path of aggressive property investment.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Broker to Landlord / Shop Talk</h3>



<p>Winning a Hong Kong Young Entrepreneur Award in 2010 and being named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons the following year filled Lee with pride. “These honours recognise both my business achievements and my social contributions,” he affirms. “I wanted to create a new industry in Hong Kong, making retail shop investments accessible and manageable for investors with as little as HK$3 million.”</p>



<p>His pioneering efforts in establishing SFC-licenced investment vehicles revolutionised retail property investing in Hong Kong. “In 2006, I started leasing shops, but by 2009, I decided to buy properties,” says the veritable shopaholic. Inspired by the McDonald’s model of land ownership and franchising, he began accumulating retail shops and is now one of the biggest players in the market.</p>



<p>The strategic move to secure an SFC licence allowed him to raise funds from the public, exponentially increasing his purchasing power. “Since 2009, I’ve bought HK$5 billion worth of shops and become the biggest property investor in Hong Kong’s retail market,” he declares confidently.</p>



<p>&nbsp;His lifetime goal is to buy 1,000 shops in Hong Kong. “It’s okay to modify your goals, but not having one is the worst,” he affirms. “Our focus is on Hong Kong street shops. Defining your battlefield is crucial for victory.”</p>

<p>His ultimate legacy? Creating harmonious relationships between landlords and tenants, and working together to build a prosperous Hong Kong. “I want tenants and landlords to be on the same boat,” he says, spotlighting the importance of mutual growth and respect.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lessons from Wall Street</h3>



<p>Working 100-hour weeks at Credit Suisse during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis taught Lee perseverance. “That experience is why I can handle the tough times as an entrepreneur,” he recounts. “It’s about persistence and resilience, especially when managing over 300 employees now.” Keeping his staff motivated, aligned and working together has its challenges. “Clear objectives, advantages and scope – this OAS framework – are key to inspiring my team,” he explains.</p>



<p>Lee believes success is not just a good work-life balance, but a harmonious blend of both. “You have to enjoy what you do,” he says. “If you love your work, it becomes part of your life. My personal passion for driving convertible cars and exploring streets helps me blend personal interests with my professional pursuits.”</p>



<p>His work ethic is evident. Exemplifying the relentless drive that fuels his dreams, it’s business as usual after the shoot, as he prepares for his next meeting. Edwin Lee is a leader who proves that with passion, perseverance and a clear vision, you can turn dreams into reality.</p>

<p>You know you’ve arrived at Joanna Hotung’s studio-meets-testing-ground slash office when you see paintings and digital artworks plastered across the muted walls of a quiet corner in Wong Chuk Hang. “These are made by my [younger] daughter [Sophia], who is an artist,” she says with a warm smile. Inside, a large room bursts with shape and colour, every surface crammed with books and journals – a testament to the insatiable curiosity and diverse interests of the educator-cum-entrepreneur slash advocate for young people, healthcare and the arts.</p>

<p>Despite Hotung’s fastidious approach to art, which she admits is wholly intuitive, the space radiates creative freedom. “It’s very chaotic and very colourful. You guys might have a hard time finding a spot [to set up for the shoot],” she laughs.</p>

<p>Surveying her domain, her eyes twinkle with pride. “Two months from now, I’ll be celebrating my 60th birthday, and I’m looking forward to becoming a grandma next year,” she shares, her voice tinged with excitement. “It’s milestone after milestone, and I’m super proud of these.”</p>

<p>Hotung’s warmth and zest for life are palpable, blending seamlessly with her many accomplishments and her ongoing journey of growth. “I’m not a fashionista,” she insists as we begin shooting, but her wardrobe of carefully curated pieces from international and local designers suggests otherwise. Each outfit is a statement of her multifaceted identity. Her style subtly echoes her broader approach to life: bold, eclectic and unapologetically authentic.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Artistic Roots</h3>



<p>“I remember as a child I always wanted to be a teacher,” she recalls. “I would organise my friends into groups, and we would do arts and crafts or try to sew or knit together, following patterns from a manual my grandma sent me from England.” Her early creativity was complemented by a love for visual and performing arts, nurtured by her parents, who took her to exhibitions and performances. She also participated eagerly in speech and music festivals, learning the piano, clarinet and ballet along the way.</p>

<p>Her family played a pivotal role in shaping her values and approach to leadership and social impact. “I was brought up very much with a can-do attitude and to be self-sufficient,” she says. “Going to boarding school in England at age 10, I learned that it’s okay to come first, last, or somewhere in between, as long as I tried my best.” Her father told her ‘whatever you try your hand at, you’ll be grateful for the experience later, and it will turn out to be useful in some way’. This wisdom has stayed with her, guiding her through successes and setbacks alike.</p>

<p>Her worldview was enriched by attending international schools in Hong Kong, Geneva, London and Beijing. “The diversity of those experiences shaped my outlook,” she notes. Being Eurasian, she felt like she could fit in anywhere, though she admits there were moments of culture shock, especially in Beijing during the 1980s. “That year was one of the most impactful of my life,” she reflects.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Vivid Vision</h3>



<p>Hotung’s foray into entrepreneurship was born out of her desire to fill a gap she observed firsthand. “My two daughters were studying in a local kindergarten, mainly to learn Cantonese,” she recounts. “I appreciated the skills, respect and discipline they learned, but when my four-year-old was told by a teacher she couldn’t paint an elephant orange because elephants can only be grey, I saw a huge gap in creative learning.” That incident sparked her decision to start her own art school, Kids’ Gallery, focused on developing creativity and inquiry-based learning.</p>

<p>“I was lucky in 1996 to be early to market,” she says proudly of KG Group, which expanded from arts and crafts to drama and dance, English-language centres and a production company, all dedicated to fostering confidence, curiosity and communication. “It was about nurturing a love for arts and empowering children to be curious,” she explains.</p>

<p>This holistic approach laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to education and social impact. In 2013, she established the Mills International Preschool in Yau Tong, and sits on the boards of Youth Diabetes Action, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society and Gleneagles Hospital, among others.</p>

<p>Prior to dedicating herself to education and social causes, young Joanna had stepped onto the corporate ladder. “I started out in the Marks &amp; Spencer graduate training programme in London, then I moved into management consulting at PwC.” But with her children’s arrival, she sought more control over her time and choices. “It’s never easy juggling both,” she admits. “I was lucky to run an education business that my children could participate in after school; they took every course on offer!”</p>

<p>Her multicultural background deeply influences her approach to education and mentorship. “I believe I can understand and curate the best of both worlds,” she says. “I’m a big believer in the discipline and hard-work mentality of Asian culture, and I also admire the confidence and individuality of Western culture.” Her goal is to provide opportunities that allow young people to balance these qualities, creating well-rounded individuals prepared to navigate a complex world.</p>

<p>She notes that young people are remarkably resilient. “Sometimes, we overprotect our children,” she says. “But facing challenges and discomfort helps them develop resilience and critical skills.”</p>

Although she has sold the KG Group, her commitment continues today. “In a world of constant change and AI, the arts and creativity are more important than ever,” she asserts. “They help develop critical thinking, empathy and problem-solving skills. Engaging with the arts encourages confidence and self-expression, empowering children to find their unique voices.” She emphasises that arts are not just entertainment, they are essential tools for shaping resilient, innovative and compassionate future leaders.</p>

<p>Her future plans involve expanding her educational initiatives through the Hotung Mills Education Foundation. “It supports arts, healthcare and education,” she explains. Her vision for mentoring the next generation centres on fostering adaptability, creativity and ethical decision-making amid technological revolutions. “I want to empower young leaders to embrace innovation while staying true to their values,” she says.</p>

<p>For her, happiness is rooted in her family and purposeful work. “Seeing the growth of those I work with gives me joy,” she shares. Each piece is made to be both beautiful and meaningful.” Signatures include conch pearl, pink diamond and diamond necklaces, earrings and rings, with characteristically lightweight settings allowing the natural beauty of the rare pearls to shine.</p>

<p>Suen’s pursuit of gemmology was a natural evolution of her artistic curiosity. Her childhood fascination with collecting jewellery provided her with a keen eye for detail and an understanding of what makes a piece truly special. After a successful stint managing a dance academy, she enrolled at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This education was pivotal, equipping her with the technical expertise and confidence to launch her own brand in 2007.</p>

Yet, these hurdles only strengthened her resolve, and setting by precious setting, she established a solid foundation for her brand to flourish in Hong Kong’s crowded luxury market.</p>

<p>A landmark moment in her career was winning a Couture Design Award in 2019 for her conch pearl earrings. Hollywood celebrities donning her creations on the red carpet cemented her reputation as a designer for the discerning and glamorous.</p>

At 46, the healthcare honcho remains fiercely passionate about his multiple business ventures, blending a relentless work ethic with an insatiable curiosity for innovation. His office at Prenetics’ Hong Kong headquarters in Quarry Bay is a reflection of his vibrant personality, featuring a large poster of himself in a boxing stance and the unofficial title of ‘Chief Honey Badger’ on the door. He explains with a grin: “It’s from this viral video about this creature that does anything to get things done, no matter the obstacles. That’s me.”</p>

<p>Growing up as an immigrant in the United States, Yeung’s early experiences shaped his relentless pursuit of success and good health. “Moving from Guangdong, China, when I was five, we had little,” he recalls. “That hunger, knowing that you have to build your future, drives me still.”</p>

<p>As a 12-year-old, he sold baseball cards, not for profit but for the thrill of the hustle. “It was my first taste of business, understanding what people want and how to give it to them,” he says. This early lesson in supply and demand laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial mindset.</p>

<p>He worked as a telemarketer at age 15. “Rejection every day taught me resilience,” he recalls. “In my teens, I was managing people in their 30’s. I learned how to persuade, listen and build trust. Business isn’t just about products; it’s about connecting with people on a human level. ‘You don’t need to be the first, but you need to be the best’ is something I live by.”</p>

<p>His first business venture, a Hui Lau Shan dessert shop franchise in the US, stemmed from recognising a market for authentic Asian flavours among the Chinese diaspora in California. “It was about sharing our culture and creating a space for connection,” he explains. Remembering early mornings at the fruit market, he adds: “If you want to succeed, you have to do what others won’t.”</p>

<p>Progressing from providing hospitality furniture for MGM’s luxury towers to establishing e-commerce platform UBuyiBuy, Yeung’s diverse startups broadened his skill set. “Each industry taught me something: quality, data, scalability,” he reflects. “My varied background allows me to connect dots others might miss. It’s about adaptability, a growth mindset, and relentless curiosity.”</p>

<p>A personal health scare at 37 marked a turning point. The discovery that he carried a gene mutation that increased his risk of colon cancer came with the realisation that health isn’t just reactive but proactive. “That moment ignited my mission – to empower people with knowledge about their health,” he shares. “Healthcare should be about prevention, not just treatment.”</p>

<p>Yeung pivoted, co-founding Prenetics in 2014, a genomics-driven healthcare company which empowers people with personalised health information. “It’s about providing tools for a healthier, longer life,” he emphasises. “That’s a mission worth risking everything for.”</p>

<p>Prenetics’ path to becoming Hong Kong’s first Nasdaq-listed unicorn was marked by obstacles, including public scepticism about genetic testing, complex regulations, and a global pandemic. “In the beginning, many didn’t understand genetic testing,” he admits. “We invested heavily in education and building trust.”</p>

<p>When Covid-19 hit, they reacted swiftly. “We transformed our labs, retrained staff and developed testing kits,” he recalls. “Working 20-hour days, we performed over 28 million PCR and home tests, our finest hour.” The pandemic solidified Prenetics’ reputation as a health-services leader. “In chaos, there’s opportunity. Our team showed the world what dedication can achieve.”</p>

<p>The goal of their prevention arm, CircleDNA, is to “put the power of health into every individual’s hands” through a comprehensive at-home genetic test providing insights into disease risk, food sensitivities and personality traits. “Knowledge is power, but only if you use it,” notes Yeung, envisioning a future where proactive health management becomes the norm and each person understands their unique blueprint.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Authentic Partnerships</h3>



<p>Yeung’s personal brush with cancer risk fuels his passion for Insighta, a cancer-screening joint venture with scientist Dennis Lo. “Detecting cancer early means more treatment options and higher survival rates,” he says. “Our goal is to make early detection a routine part of health checks.” Expanding from lung and liver cancer tests this year, they plan to screen for more than 10 cancers by 2027. “It’s about turning the tide against one of humanity’s deadliest diseases,” he asserts.</p>

<p>IM8, meanwhile, has star power. Co-founded by football legend David Beckham, its science-backed, nutrition-rich formula is intended to disrupt the supplement industry. “David’s genuine belief in IM8’s mission made him a true partner,” shares Yeung. “His family uses our products daily, a level of commitment that’s rare in celebrity collaborations.”</p>

<p>Tennis champion Aryna Sabalenka, who started using IM8 for energy and recovery, is now a brand ambassador and shareholder. “Proof that real results lead to real partnerships,” he concludes.</p>

<p>Yeung sees a future where smartphones serve as personal health assistants. “Technology will enable us to understand and manage our health proactively,” he predicts. From genomics to AI, the tools are here. “We’re leading the charge, turning science into everyday solutions.” Then comes the integration of health with financial wealth. “Holdings of Bitcoin and cash enable us to prepare for the future. The convergence of health and wealth is the next frontier.”</p>

<p>For Yeung, however, success isn’t just financial; it’s about impact. “Building something meaningful that improves lives is success,” he says, while underlining that happiness, for him, comes from family, purpose and balance. “Without health and loved ones, nothing else matters,” he reflects.</p>

<p>His greatest influences are his parents, immigrants who sacrificed everything for a better future. “Their work ethic, perseverance and humility are my guiding principles,” he states. Beyond family, he idolises disruptors like Jack Ma, who faced rejection but persisted. “Ma’s belief that ‘the opportunity lies where the complaints are’ has always resonated with me. It’s about identifying pain points and creating solutions, whether in e-commerce or healthcare.”</p>

<p>Yeung maintains an iron grip on a vision of such breadth and depth that, from afar, it seems almost singular. His self-stated greatest strength is his belief in his ideas and the determination to see them through. “Innovation is a mindset – curiosity, experimentation and learning. The future belongs to those who create it. Think big, work hard, and surround yourself with people smarter than you,” he urges. “That’s how you go far.”</p>

<p>Alexander Wong steps into the Champagne Bar at the Grand Hyatt, exuding an aura of artistic precision. He is dressed meticulously in a sharp suit, a carefully chosen tie, and accessories that tell a story of a confident personality. His bleached blond coiffure, a signature of his bold style, catches the light as he laughs, confessing: “Today, I’m extra particular.” Referring to his appearance ahead of our shoot, he continues: “It’s all about branding – presentation is an art, after all.”</p>

<p>A love for art and colour lies at the core of one of Hong Kong’s most visible architects and interior designers. For Wong, the process of designing isn’t merely about constructing buildings; it’s about creating living, breathing artworks that evoke emotion, challenge boundaries and reflect a multicultural mosaic. “Everything you can imagine is real,” he shares, echoing Picasso to emphasise how imagination fuels his work.</p>

<p>Asked about his upbringing, Wong trains a light into his soul. “Where does one begin – self-awareness or the dawning realisation of existence?” he ruminates. “Childhood is too vast to summarise, but my earliest passions were rooted in the visual arts, particularly in drawing and painting.” He recounts being nurtured by culturally rich parents and studying privately under Luis Chan, the renowned Chinese surrealist painter. Later, he was mentored by Lee Kwok Hon, a Paris-trained Hong Kong artist. “I was utterly absorbed in art,” he says. “My idols spanned Picasso, Michelangelo, Wyeth, Degas, Bacon and Hockney. London’s museums became my second home.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Childhood in Chromatic Light</h3>



<p>Wong’s early immersion in art shaped his perception of space and form. “Art taught me how to see – not just look,” he explains. These lessons became the foundation for his future dreams, where space wasn’t just a vessel or an enclosure but a narrative, an emotion waiting to be unlocked. Standing before architectural masterpieces like the Le Corbusier-designed chapel in Ronchamp or Carlo Scarpa’s Brion tomb weren’t just aesthetic moments for him, but revelations that space could evoke existential truths, emotions and even transcendence. “Art rewired how I experience architecture – space became a meaningful narrative, not just a structure,” he reflects.</p>

<p>As a youth, his curiosity was insatiable and a fascination with combining art, science and technology naturally drew him toward architecture. “It’s a discipline that synthesises everything I love,” he says. His time as a post-graduate student at Princeton University was pivotal, though “the city beyond the campus, especially Manhattan, taught me more about design than any classroom. Museums, galleries, the streets – they are living architectural laboratories.”</p>

<p>These experiences laid the foundation for his approach: architecture as a vessel for storytelling, emotion and cultural dialogue. “Architecture isn’t just a profession; it’s a way to communicate the human condition,” he asserts. “Design is a story told through space.”</p>

<p>Founded in 2001, Alexander Wong Architects faced its share of storms – economic volatility, global crises, and pandemics. “The journey began with a leap of faith during the dot-com bubble. We navigated through SARS, natural disasters and personal trials,” he recalls, adding with a chuckle: “I remember repairing office PCs on the floor – humbling but formative.”</p>

<p>“Every setback was a lesson in adaptation.” His secret? “Resilience is like painting when there are holes on the canvas, but you just keep going. Survival is the beginning; evolving to become stronger and better is the real goal,” he states.</p>

<p>Over the years, his firm transitioned into a multi-award-winning, multi-disciplinary powerhouse. His “GSCC” framework – Growth, Strength, Competition, Cost-Benefit Ratio Over Time – guides the team’s colourful evolution. “We look beyond mere expansion,” he says. “Diversity and excellence in design, innovation and inclusivity in approach – these are our true objectives.” His re-interpretation of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) becomes Diversity in design, exceeding users’ Expectations with a relentless pursuit for Innovation, creating spaces that are vibrant, meaningful and culturally rich. “We also try to blend diverse professional disciplines like a painter mixing different colours or even in different mediums – each stroke contributing to the greater whole.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Crafting a Cohesive Spectrum</h3>



<p>Wong’s approach to integrating architecture, interior design, urban planning, branding and property development is like composing a symphony, with each section appearing distinct yet harmonious. “We don’t force cohesion; we allow each element to find its own natural voice. The key is organic dialogue, driven by the project’s unique narrative,” he affirms. This flexible methodology lets each discipline shine; sometimes architecture takes the lead, other times branding or interior design. “It’s about respecting each colour and letting them blend naturally.”</p>

<p>Where do his ideas come from? “Narrative is the core. A project begins with a story rooted in its context.” As prime examples of a visual story told through space, he cites Bamboo Futura in Chengdu, influenced by pandas and bamboo forests, and Carmen Futura in Langham Place, Mong Kok, a cinema project inspired by Wong Kar-wai’s sensuality, which earned him International Property Awards in architecture and interior design, respectively.</p>

<p>He channels inspirations from nature, technology, history and even dance – Argentine tango or Russian ballet – each adding a unique hue to his creative palette. “We infuse tradition with innovation,” he says.</p>

<p>His Cinema Exotica interiors for a Shanghai shopping centre, for instance, balance Middle Eastern and Eastern influences, fostering cultural exchange rather than superficial blending. “Multiculturalism adds depth and richness, like layering different shades for complexity,” he notes.</p>

<p>Winning more than 90 international design awards is a testimony to his vibrant vision. “Recognition fuels our passion,” he admits. “But what truly matters is how our designs impact lives, creating spaces that inspire, comfort and elevate the spirit of the everyday users.”</p>

<p>Projects like Carmen Futura, WM Hotel in Sai Kung, and his ‘Ice &amp; Fire’ interiors for Vivace restaurant and ‘Spiral Sky’ Banquet Hall at the airport’s Regala Skycity Hotel are masterful strokes on a global canvas. The rare achievement of winning the “World’s Best Interior Design” accolade four times at the International Property Awards cements his firm’s luminous reputation. “Winning awards is just the icing on the cake &#8212; the honour is knowing that our design is able to touch the lives of our end users in some real meaningful ways,” he reflects.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Art of Branding</h3>



<p>His standout hair and snazzy suits aren’t just fashion statements; they are part of his branding. “It’s about the power of presentation,” he says. “Imagination is everything, but how you present that imagination is equally important.” He advises young architects to develop their own voice, stay curious and build networks because “who you know is as important as what you design”.</p>

<p>So what’s next for Alexander Wong Architects? “A big project on a different continent, perhaps,” he hints. The design visionary sees the future as a kaleidoscope of AI, cultural renaissance and hyper-specialisation, with each facet adding a new hue to explore. Success is about creating a lasting impact, yet he remains humble. “In a million years, no one will remember who built what,” he muses. “But the lessons we learn, the stories we tell – those are the true colours of our legacy.”</p>

THE ART OF SPACE: In the vibrant interiors’ world of Alexander Wong, every detail colours the bigger picture

<p>Margaret Chiu’s residence in Tuen Mun, surrounded by lush greenery and facing a serene harbour, reflects her personality – a sanctuary of calm, simplicity and grace. As we step into her garden on this radiant August morning, the gentle scent of grass mingles with the quiet hum of passing cargo ships visible offshore. A dozen pet dogs, affectionately called her “fur babies”, lounge comfortably nearby, each rescued, adopted or gifted, a testament to her boundless love for animals.</p>

<p>Taking us on a tour of the property, Chiu shares stories of her lifelong dedication to creatures wild and tame, the environment and the community. At one point, she reaches up to pluck longan from a tree, examining the fruit thoughtfully before offering us a taste. “Hmmm&#8230; that’s nice,” says the conservationist in her characteristically soft vocal tone. “You should try some. It’s simple, but meaningful. That’s what life is about.” Her words echo her essence: a life rooted in balance, beauty and kindness.</p>

<p>Chiu, the daughter of Deacon Chiu, the late entrepreneur of Far East Consortium and Asia Television fame, speaks wistfully of her childhood in the Hong Kong countryside. “I was six when I lived next to a mountain, surrounded by animals and nature,” she reminisces, her face softening to match her voice. “My friends were cats, dogs, birds and rabbits; stray cats would come for food – I’d feed over 30 cats every day. We had two dogs, a cocker spaniel named Sunday and a local yellow dog. They waited for me at the door every day. We were a family, surrounded by happiness, love and safety.”</p>

<p>She pauses for an instant. “I remember once caring for a baby bear and a leopard [at the zoo in Lai Chi Kok, her father owned]. I fed them milk and cornflakes, carried them around, and they’d climb on me like trees. I had scratches everywhere – people thought I’d been in fights! But I was just happy, surrounded by animals. Nature gave me peace and taught me that animals express emotions just like humans. They’re my family, and I cherish that connection.”</p>

<p>The bond she shares with her staff is equally heartfelt and genuine. Singling out one of her house help for particular praise, Chiu chuckles: “She’s the master of posing – so confident in front of the camera. Let’s have her guide me today.” Thus begins our light-hearted photo shoot.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Harmony in Heritage</h3>



<p>Her upbringing amid nature and a large family in which she was the only girl among eight children instilled a deep understanding of harmony and resilience. “We’d swim at the beach during summer, and my brothers would take me to secret mountain waterfalls for picnics. Those moments made me realise that animals and nature are like us – they feel sadness, happiness and fear.&nbsp; Protecting them is protecting ourselves.”</p>

<p>She worked at Sung Dynasty Village, which, like the zoo, was an attraction at Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park, bought by Deacon Chiu in 1962. “It was a theme park transporting visitors back 1,000 years ago to the Song Dynasty,” explains the dutiful daughter. “It was based on a famous Chinese painting of a bustling marketplace during the Qingming / Ching Ming Festival [Tomb-Sweeping Day]. I learned about Chinese traditional food and even wrote a book about the cuisine.”</p>

<p>She emphasises the importance of harmony, drawing parallels between Chinese cultural principles and her work. “Chinese food comes from the cycle of nature: after rain, there’s sunshine; after sunrise, sunset. Everything in nature is interconnected and constantly adjusting to find balance. That’s true for health, society and ecology.”</p>

<p>Her insights reveal a philosophy rooted in resilience: “Just like a tree during a typhoon, we need to bend to survive. Balance isn’t rigid; it’s dynamic and evolving like life itself.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Tradition to Technology</h3>



<p>While reflecting on the varied roles she has fulfilled – including Executive and non-Executive Director of family companies within the Far East umbrella, Chiu highlights a venture into jewellery design when she lived in Paris. “Creating my own brand was a memorable milestone,” she recounts. “But my true passion lies in preserving our cultural heritage and protecting our environment.”</p>

<p>Her job of recreating immersive historical experiences at Sung Dynasty Village, which opened in 1979 and enchanted visitors for nearly 20 years, was driven by respect for cultural resilience. “Honouring our roots helps us understand who we are and what we must protect.”</p>

<p>Looking forward, Chiu excitedly discloses a current business project in another field close to her heart – pet services. Here, her passion for innovation shines. “With AI and digital technology advancing rapidly, I see a future where pets are fully integrated into our daily lives, even when we travel,” she shares. “That’s why we’re launching Paw Certified, a rating system for pet-friendly hotels – like Michelin stars for hotels with pets.”</p>

<p>She introduces the accompanying app, Gobigobi, designed to help pet owners find suitable accommodations and services. “It’s about making travel and leisure easier, more convenient and more compassionate,” she explains.</p>

<p>Her leadership philosophy emphasises purpose: “It’s not just about profit but about creating meaningful change. I believe leadership is about inspiring others to work together toward a common goal.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Compassion and Action</h3>



<p>Her proudest achievement remains her ongoing conservation efforts, especially as founder of the Pink Dolphin Fund. “It began in 1998 in Paris, it aims to ensure the survival of Hong Kong’s pink dolphins,” she states. “Heavy fishing, pollution and habitat loss are threats, but I believe we can make a difference.”</p>

<p>She fervently describes the plight of pink dolphins, whose local population has shrunk from an estimated 158 in 2003. “There are fewer than 38 left. They’re sensitive mammals, and heavy noise from construction and boats confuses them, trapping them in fishing nets or leading them astray. They have called Hong Kong waters home for hundred of years, and they deserve our protection.</p>

<p>“The pink dolphin is more than a marine mammal – it’s a symbol of resilience, endurance and passion. Their survival reflects our own need for harmony and balance. When we protect them, we’re protecting our own future.”</p>

<p>Chiu envisions a time when pink dolphins will thrive again in Hong Kong waters, living undisturbed and in harmony with their environment, their habitat restored and their numbers increasing. “We need science-based solutions, effective marine protected areas and greater awareness,” she urges. “Their decline is a wake-up call. We must act now – coordinating efforts across sectors; the government, communities and organisations working together – to preserve their home and ours.”</p>

<p>She believes we should all embody the ways of the dolphins. “We should &#8216;Think Pink.&#8217; Their way of living inspires us to be better, more caring, more connected and more adapting. That&#8217;s leadership &#8211; living with purpose and making a difference.”</p>

<p>Her commitment to inspiring perseverance and compassion is evident. “Living with purpose influences every decision I make, whether in business, community work, or personal life. It gives hope and dreams.”</p>

<p>As our interview concludes, Chiu shares her philosophy on happiness and balance. “Happiness is being with family and nature, feeling valued and loved. It’s about harmony – what you eat, what you do, how you care for others.”</p>

<p>At this juncture, her unfailingly cheerful assistant – whom Chiu jokes is “extra giddy today” – chimes in: “Of course, Madam! We should always be happy and thankful for each day. That’s the only way to live.” She nods in agreement, a gentle smile spreading across her face in a reaffirmation of her lifelong ethos.</p>

<p>Like the longan she offered us earlier, Margaret Chiu’s life exemplifies simplicity infused with meaning – a reflection of her belief that we are all part of this interconnected ecosystem, learning and growing from one another.</p>
