Worn by the eponymous brand founder himself, it was used as a test piece as he continuously sought to refine the technical and design aspects of his unique vision, ultimately paving the way for the much-loved traits that still define the brand to this day.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In all, there were only 11 of these very early Richard Mille watches ever made – five with a German silver baseplate and six with a titanium counterpart. It saw a host of collectors compete to secure the finest items on offer from the collection of Rosalind Gersten Jacobs, an American fashion buyer and retail executive, and her husband, going on to assemble a notable collection of their works.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Le Violon d’Ingres was first published in the Surrealist magazine Littérature in June 1924 and featured Man Ray’s lover, Kiki de Montparnasse, in a pose first made famous by Ingres’ in The Valpinçon Bather (1808). Signed and dated in ink as Man Ray 1924 and stamped in red ink ‘original’ on the reverse, it has a detailed provenance and has long been acknowledged as an icon of the 20th-century art world.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Burning incense and other feted aromatics has been a staple of the secular and religious life of China since at least the time of the Han Dynasty (BC 202). To facilitate this, incense burners were often ceremonially placed within imperial offices and private residences, while also being commonly found in places of worship or key outdoor venues. While not quite dating back to the earliest days of such practices, an eminently rare Huanghuali rectangular incense stand, complete with a serpentine panel and drawer, from 17thcentury Xiangji, still racked up a more than respectable HK$24.5 million (US$3.1 million) at a recent auction in Hong Kong.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A relatively unique item, it features a rectangular sectional stand, while its upper area boasts a green-serpentine stone panel within a thick frame with a beaded edge. This all rests on a central plinth set with decorative Taohuan panels, which are framed by pillared struts, with this neatly constructed unit also incorporating a drawer on one side. Part of the appeal of its elegantly curved stand is its clear association with Buddhism. Indeed, these were commonly placed in front of Buddhist images while the stands themselves featured arched outlines that artfully resembled Buddhist caves and pagodas.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlike the stylistic photography of Lam’s earlier works, he now delves into combining photo technique and digital system. The idea behind the collection is to combine basic art theory with numeric digital technique, and merging photography and painting together in exploring colours and movements.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The opportunity was a very nice surprise&#8221;, Lam says. A few months ago, after having created several pieces within the collection, Lam was looking for someone to give the artworks to. &#8220;Coincidentally, I met with Professor Alice Chiu, a very good friend of mine, and we had started to discuss doing collaborative work for her Sheen Hok Charity Foundation. The title of the charity art auction is Time to Give and I am prepared to give”, explains Lam.&nbsp;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I was so excited and happy when I heard that Robert was looking to give his art pieces to someone. I really needed the support from different sectors, companies and friends. In fact, some of my friends have been supporting me to help the youth in need. In addition to providing medical assistance, I hope to improve them in education and art and increase professional training, so that they will have skills to improve family incomes in the future. I think this is the right way and right direction for our foundation to contribute to society”, says Professor Chiu. &#8220;There are many people who require our help that I believe charity services will never end. I will not consider stopping, and it will never be enough.&#8221;</span></p>

Time to Give: A charity art auction by Robert Lam and Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation

<p>David Hockney &#8211; a pioneering artist in the field of pop art &#8211; once said, &#8220;Everyone knows a splash can&#8217;t be frozen in time, so when you see it like that in a painting it&#8217;s even more striking than in a photograph.&#8221; Fast forward to 2020, the British artist&#8217;s work, a piece titled <em>The Splash</em> proved the statement true by becoming the winning piece of <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/?locale=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sotheby</a>&#8216;s Contemporary Art Evening Auction in London recently.</p>

<p>Completed in 1966, this iconic piece was sold for £23.1 million, nearly eight times more than the price it fetched during its last trip to the auction block in 2006. The Splash is the second in the series of three masterpieces, along with <em>Tate&#8217;s A Bigger Splash</em> and <em>The Little Splash</em> that captures the action of water splashing right after a person dives into a pool.</p>
<p>Hockney, who moved from London to Los Angeles, was impressed by the city&#8217;s vibrant colours, bright sunshine and lifestyle, especially its plethora of private swimming pools, thus occurring in many of his works like the <em>Picture of a Hollywood Swimming Pool</em> that was auctioned at Sotheby&#8217;s Contemporary Art Evening Auction last November in New York.</p>
<p>In all, this <a href="//www.gafencushop.com/impressionist-bridge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sotheby&#8217;s auction</a> netted an impressive total sales figure of £92.5 million, with stand-out performers including Banksy&#8217;s <em>Vote to Love</em>, Francis Bacon&#8217;s <em>Turning Figure</em> and more.</p>

<p>Few rail commuters trundling into one of London’s busiest stations late last year would have had any notion that 5,600 kilometres away, in a far-off New York sales room, the very structure that was bearing their weight had excited an intense <a href="//www.gafencushop.com/fancy-pink-diamond-sothebys-auction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bidding</a> war. To be fair, it was not the 19<sup>th</sup> century bridge itself that was exciting collectors but rather a rare chance to own a famous Impressionist depiction of it, painted by one of the grand masters of this hugely influential movement – <a href="https://www.claudemonetgallery.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Claude Monet</a> –at some point between 1899 and 1901.</p>

<p>The artist, temporarily residing in London, was beguiled by the structure and its interplay with the heavy urban fog of the day and it became the subject of no less than 37 of his works. Today, many fine examples of his <em>Charing Cross Bridge</em> series grace the walls of some of the world’s leading art repositories, with very few ever offered for sale – indeed, prior the New York auction, there had been no opportunity to purchase one for nearly 20 years, which is probably why it went for US$27.6 million, exceeding its reserve by more than $7 million.</p>

Claude Monetised: Impressionist bridge landscape sets new auction record

<p>To say that Nara Yoshitomo had a triumphant start to October would be putting things mildly. After all, the acclaimed Japanese artist smashed all expectations when his works broke records back to back during Hong Kong’s auction week.</p>

<p>The first work to set a new record was Not Everything but/ Green House, a 3D art installation sold by Poly Auction Hong Kong. Standing proudly at 6m high, the large-scale Green House fetched a final price of HK$40.12 million, becoming Nara’s most expensive artwork ever sold.</p>

<p>But that record lasted for mere hours only, with his Knife Behind Back painting selling at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale for a staggering HK$195.7 million in the same afternoon. Measuring a gargantuan 234cm x 208cm, the large artwork was created in 2000, the year Nara returned to his homeland after living in Germany for 12 years. Not only did this sale beat his Poly Auction performance nearly five-fold, it simultaneously conferred on Nara the accolade of being the most expensive Japanese artist in the world. Not a bad day’s work, indeed.</p>


Double Act: Two Records in One Day for Nara Yoshitomo

<p>Since bursting upon the art scene back in the ’80s, American artist Jeff Koons has been no stranger to controversy. Indeed, his ostentatious artworks have long been decried and celebrated in equal measure. All the controversy surrounding his sundry creations has, of course, only driven up their value. A clear case in point is his Balloon Dog (Orange) – a stainless steel sculpture of a toy balloon dog – which sold for US$58.4 million in 2013, the then-record for any auctioned artwork produced by a living artist.</p>

<p>Now, that record has been shattered and by yet another of Koons’ animal-inspired creations – a 41-inch stainless steel sculpture simply known as Rabbit. Completed in 1986, this cartoonish figure is widely regarded as one of the most iconic examples of 20th-century art, hailed as being exuberant and celebratory by his admirers, while dismissed as vacuous and disposable by his many detractors.</p>

<p>Regardless of its artistic value, none can deny its monetary worth, with this best-in-show bunny snagging US$91.1 million at a recent Christie’s auction, surpassing the US$90.2 million record set last November by David Hockney and reaffirming Koons’ reputation as a genius cash-generating creative talent.</p>


Money Bunny: Jeff Koons’ Rabbit shatters records

<p>With 2019 looking set to be the Year of Reemerging Classical Chinese art, another venerable artefact from the Middle Kingdom’s golden era smashed expectations when it come up for auction at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong earlier this year. The collectible in question, <strong>Fourteen Poems on Planting Bamboo by Li Dongyang</strong> (1447–1516), dated back to the time of the Ming Dynasty and eventually changed hands for US$4.5 million – five times the original estimate.</p>

<p>For those wondering just how this handwritten scroll&#8217;s hefty price tag can be justified, a brief history lesson may prove enlightening. Li Donyang was something a distinguished fellow – a scholar, a poet, a painter a calligrapher and a holder of the highest level-imperial degree. Naturally highly regarded, his 14 poems run the length of the 10-metre scroll, with every character exquisitely calligraphed in the author’s distinctive cursive script. Even more impressively, it is virtually in mint condition, with only four characters said to have been lost in the five centuries since he sat down to work on it. A remarkable feat and one that, understandably, commanded a remarkable price.</p>


US$4.5 million bid for Fourteen Poems on Planting Bamboo by Li Dongyang

<p>Norman Rockwell, the renowned painter and illustrator best known for the popular covers of American culture he created for <em>New York’s The Saturday Evening Post</em>, was again the talk of the town when one of his works – <strong>Sinatra: An American Classic</strong> – was the most sought-after lot at Sotheby’s Lady Blue Eyes: The Property of Barbara and Frank Sinatra auction. When the gavel finally dropped on his 1973 oil canvas painting of the beloved singer, actor and hell-raiser, the winning bid – after a heated six-way battle – was US$687,000, nearly six times its US$120,000 reserve price.</p>

<p>Initially published in conjunction with an article of the same title (a work by his long-term friend and collaborator, Rosalind Russell) in a 1973 edition of the <em>Ladies Home Journal</em>, the original Frank Sinatra portrait spans 47.6cm x 33cm and was one of the last paintings Rockwell completed before his death in 1978. As well as the many years he spent working as a magazine illustrator, Rockwell was also known for his portraits of notable American celebrities and politicians, including John F Kennedy, John Wayne and Ronald Reagan. What makes the Frank Sinatra portrait so unique, though, is its vibrant green background, as most of Rockwell’s works were predominantly grey. Maybe Frank insisted he did it his way.</p>

<p>Zao Wou-ki (1921-2013) has long been regarded as one of China’s pre-eminent modern artists whose massive masterpieces are only dwarfed by the huge prices they command <em>(<u><a href="//www.gafencushop.com/zao-wou-ki/">read more here</a></u>)</em>.</p>
<p>Now, one particular item from the grandmaster’s oeuvre – <em>Juin-Octobre 1985</em> – created quite a buzz when it came up for auction at Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale, with its eventual price estimated to be around US$44 million. It ultimately went on to set new auction records by getting sold for US$65 million.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Constructed as a three-panelled triptych – a format greatly favoured by Zao – the central canvas measures a whopping 280cm x 400cm, and is flanked by two further 280cm x 300cm panels. Commissioned by the renowned architect IM Pei – a lifelong friend of Zao’s – it hung in Singapore’s Raffles City complex until 2005, when it was auctioned by Christie’s, with the winning bid said to be in the region of HK$18 million.</p>

<p>Putting the artist’s work into perspective, Vinci Chang, Sotheby’s Head of Modern Asian Art, said: “Zao’s paintings are held in the same regard as those of Western masters. As a consequence, we are deeply honoured to be able to present <em>Juin-Octobre 1985</em>, the largest painting in the artist’s oeuvre and without a doubt, a singular masterpiece and one of unparalleled importance.”</p>
<p>With the value of his paintings set to soar even higher as the posthumous reputation of Zao Wou-Ki continues to build, his works seem to offer that rarest combination – aesthetic delight and escalating investment value.</p>
