Art Basel Hong Kong returns after a year off site. Given the on-going travel restrictions and social distancing measures, the city&#8217;s premier international art fair Art Basel Hong Kong is introducing a new hybrid format to the 2021 event. In a wholly new hybrid-format for the city&#8217;s biggest annual art fair, the programme will launch a combination its digital platform Art Basel Live: Hong Kong to complement its physical fair, presenting a unique overview of the diverse art scenes from around the world with a close focus on historical and experimental works of art in various mediums by both established and emerging artists and galleries. The art fair, which will run between 21 to 23 May will be the fair&#8217;s first major exhibition since the pandemic in 2019.

An impressive line up of galleries 
Art Basel Hong Kong 2021 will feature 104 participating galleries from 23 countries from around the world. The main sector will present 86 galleries with a close focus on experimental works. For the 56 international galleries that could not attend the fair due to travel restrictions, satellite booths staffed with a local representative appointed by Art Basel have been set up to amplify the visibility of its partnering international exhibitors.
A new hybrid format 
The hybrid format of Art Basel Hong Kong 2021 will include standalone as well as shared booths at its usual location at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, while its digital platform titled Art Basel Live: Hong Kong will give virtual viewers access to Online Viewing Rooms, a program of special events, live-streamed tours, broadcasts and virtual walkthroughs, bringing audiences from around the world together.
Exclusive online content 
The specially launched Art Basel Live: Hong Kong will highlight exclusive content for its online viewers, from live broadcasts featuring&nbsp;Takashi Murakami,&nbsp;Su Xiaobai,&nbsp;Theaster Gates, and collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, as well as exciting programmes such as unveiling rare artworks being taken out of their crates, and live-streamed tours of other cultural and art events around Hong Kong. Among the list of online programmes to look out for is the ‘The Art Market 2021: China Focus’, which will cover the most recent developments in China, the world’s second-biggest art market. 

Where to go 
For the physical event, the Art Basel exhibition will be held in its usual location at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 21 to 23 May, while a daily broadcast shot at from the venue will be live-streamed on Art Basel&#8217;s website and&nbsp;Facebook page to its global audience every day at 8pm, as well as&nbsp;on Chinese platforms Yitiao and Zai Art.&nbsp;Ticketing price start from HK$200. 

Social distancing measures 
Visitors of the in-person of the Art Basel fair may have to wait in line for a given amount of time as the venue will be applying social distancing measures, limiting to a controlled number of visitors within the hall at any given time. Upon entering, the exhibition hall, all visitors are expected to scan the event&#8217;s QR code on the LeaveHomeSafe app or use an electronic registration form to record details of all visitors&#8217; attendance.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2021: What to expect at the upcoming art fair

While Hong Kong is known as an unsentimental global financial centre, recent years have seen a huge effort go into foisting a new image of the city – that of an international art hub – onto the sensibilities of the global public. At the forefront of this movement is Art Basel, the international art fair that has been an annual fixture in the city since 2013. As the only Asian iteration of this long-established Western art event, Art Basel Hong Kong attracts wide international attendance and participation from the world’s leading art galleries. This year, the event hit a new high, with 242 globally prestigious galleries taking part and a footfall in excess of 88,000.

Looking to capitalise on this success, a slew of other prestigious annual art events are now also using Hong Kong as a platform from which to jostle for their own share of the Asian art dollar, including Art Central, the Asia Contemporary Art Show and the Affordable Art Fair.
Running in parallel with this has been the city’s booming art auction scene – led by such luminaries as Sotheby’s and Bonhams – as well as its burgeoning number of blue-chip art galleries, notably Opera Gallery, K11 Art Foundation, Hanart TZ Gallery, Gagosian and White Cube. Among the more recent additions are H Queen’s in Central, an entire 24-storey building, and the South Island Cultural District, a whole urban zone – both dedicated to art and lifestyle.

Giving her own take on what is driving the local art boom, Adeline Ooi, the Asia Director of Art Basel Hong Kong, said: “What do you buy after your car and your Birkins and your LVs? The next thing was always going to be wine or art or – more likely – wine and art.”
But while Hong Kong has become a lucrative destination for those in the business of buying or selling art, those creating art don’t necessarily seem to be getting their share of the related profits. Their problems are, of course, only exacerbated by the burden of history. While the Post-Cultural Revolution period of the ’80s and ’90s triggered a renaissance of the mainland’s art scene – with the works of such artists as Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi and Yue Minjun becoming globally in demand – this also acted as a catalyst to eclipse the artistic endeavours of several generations of Hong Kong creatives.

Although some local artists (notably Lui Shou-kwan and Wucius Wong, founders of the New Ink Movement) did achieve international recognition from the ’70s onwards, most of their contemporaries have remained all but unknown. It’s a problem that continues to this day, with only one or two notable exceptions. So, while some high-profile figures – such as Lee Kit, who represented Hong Kong at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 – do get their due recognition, those who fail to secure the backing of the more affluent galleries still struggle to get by, with many of them obliged to move abroad.
One such struggling artist is Mona Choo, an artist who migrated to Singapore to boost her career. She says: “I was in a great exhibition in Hong Kong in 2016 – the One Belt, One Road Visual Arts Exhibition at Sotheby’s – and I made some great contacts. Despite that, I couldn’t find any Hong Kong gallery willing to work with me on a long-term basis.”

Many artists also complain that they have been driven out of the city by its exorbitant rents. One to fall victim to such a problem was Deniau, a French painter who tried to make a go of it in Hong Kong between 2014 and 2017. Ultimately despairing of finding an affordable place to work, she too quit the SAR in favour of Singapore. Comparing her current situation with her difficult Hong Kong years, she says: “Having a viable studio has made a huge difference to me. I am now far more productive than I ever was in Hong Kong.”
But there are others like French visual artist Ophelia Jacarini who, despite the many challenges, feel that Hong Kong&#8217;s burgeoning art scene may still have much to offer to budding artists. Says she: &#8220;Living here means being flexible. Though my studio is really small compared to the price I am paying, I feel like it&#8217;s still worth it as the art scene is growing here and I want to be part of it. Yes, If I compare it to Paris, I cannot spend time in a different museum every day to learn about various artists. Then there are such disappointments like shows or commission projects getting cancelled. But even then, I feel like I get more opportunity to share my work here than I did in Paris.&#8221;

This scope of &#8220;opportunity&#8221; is seemingly set to increase with Hong Kong’s 2018-2019 budget seeing a whopping HK$20 billion earmarked for artistic and cultural endeavours. Despite this apparent good news, though, some cynics have pointed out that only a small percentage of this figure will go towards supporting artists, with the lion’s share going towards building new cultural facilities and expanding existing ones.
This may seem a strange dichotomy but, in reality, it sums up just how art truly is perceived in Hong Kong – as a consumer-oriented commodity in a hyper-transactional space. As a result, many fear that, unless the city can find a way to bridge the gap between its creative and commercial imperatives, Hong Kong’s art scene may ostensibly continue to flourish, while its indigenous creative talents may wither away unacknowledged.

What can we expect from BMW at Art Basel Hong Kong 2019?
We have a range of activities going on, and one I&#8217;m particularly proud of is the BMW Art Journey. Each year, we bring young emerging artistic talents and give them an opportunity to travel the world as part of this unique art competition. It&#8217;s not just a prize but an opportunity for them to develop as artists. At Art Basel Hong Kong, we&#8217;ve announced the shortlist of potential awardees for the next Art Journey. The winner will be chosen in the coming months. This year, we have three female finalists, which is quite special.

Tell us a little bit about BMW&#8217;s all-new Art Car. What were the inspirations behind its design?
Over the years, we have brought a total of nine BMW Art Cars to Hong Kong, but this year it&#8217;s even more exciting because we have the original Art Car No.1 from 1975. It&#8217;s a particularly special occasion because this was the car that laid the foundation stone for the entire Art Car collection. It was French racer Hervé&nbsp;Poulain who commissioned his friend, the renowned American artist Alexander Calder, to transform on his actual BMW racecar. It is that precise car that is on display at Art Basel Hong Kong, and is the pioneer for a line that now boasts 19 unique models. The Art Car really highlights to blending of creativity and artistic flair with our cars, which evokes emotional responses in people&#8217;s hearts and emotions, much like the world of art.

What&#8217;s can we expect from BMW in 2019? Which new models will be making their debuts?
First and foremost, we will have a range of new models launching in the market. First of all, the new generation of the 3-series. The 3 series for us represents the core of sheer driving pleasure. It&#8217;s the most dynamic and sporty car that we have, and will be coming to Hong Kong very soon. On top of that, this year we&#8217;ll be focussing on the luxury segment. For example, we will bring a revamped version of the 7-series, but also two all-new concept cars – the BMW 8-series and the X7, which will be the first full-size SAV in this luxury segment to be introduced to the market.

Martijn Oremus on the BMW Art Car, Art Journey and what to expect from the carmaker in 2019

It&#8217;s no secret that the late Austrian artist, Egon Schiele (1890-1918), is widely regarded as the &#8220;Bad Boy&#8221; of the Austrian Expressionist art world. His penchant for sensational and controversial erotic paintings of nude figures have long held a special fascination for collectors the world over. In fact, in the wake of the centenary anniversary of his premature demise last year – which saw some of the most-lauded art museums worldwide pay tribute to his oeuvre – the Austrian painter&#8217;s masterpieces have become even more highly sought-after across the globe.&nbsp;

Despite the burgeoning rise of passionate and dedicated Asian art collectors, to date, Egon Schiele has never been represented or displayed by any gallery within the region. It was a particularly thrilling treat, then, when the internationally acclaimed gallerist Richard Nagy showed an expansive collection of 45 museum-quality Schiele artworks at the recent Art Basel Hong Kong fair – the first-ever retrospective show of the Austrian artist&#8217;s works in Asia.

A self-confessed fan of Egon Schiele, Richard Nagy (owner of the eponymous Richard Nagy Ltd art gallery) says: &#8220;Schiele&#8217;s an artist that I&#8217;ve worked with for almost 40 years now, and still find exciting. He&#8217;s intellectually stimulating and very confrontational.&#8221;

&#8220;Not only did he break with convention by becoming the first Austrian Expressionist painter, he also reinterpreted the depiction of naked women as individuals wholly in control of their bodies, rather than as objects for the voyeuristic&nbsp; pleasure of men.&nbsp; His works are vibrant and unapologetically raw. It&#8217;s something to which people still react and it&#8217;s still the reason that some people are upset by him. It gets under their skin.&#8221;

As the perfect conclusion to Art Month, Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 will be taking over our city for the last three days of March. Almost 250 well-respected galleries from over 30 countries worldwide will be descending on the Fragrant Harbour, including 28 first-timers.
