While Art Basel is surely on every art lover&#8217;s to-do list this month, that&#8217;s no reason to miss out on some of the other satellite art exhibitions taking place in Hong Kong at the same time. Here are the ones we&#8217;ll be checking out for sure.

A celebrated street artist based in New York, FUTURA is coming to Hong Kong this month with his FUTURA – Abstract Compass exhibition at Space 27. Displaying 27 new and existing works, the exhibition will showcase his unique abstract graffiti style, with signature evanescent symbols in spray paint can fashion.

Lui Shou-Kwan – A Centenary Celebration

Over at Alisan Fine Arts, meanwhile, legendary ink artist Lui Shou-Kwan&#8217;s solo exhibition is being staged in honour of his birth centenary. On display will be Lui Shou-Kwan&#8217;s revolutionary ink artworks that merged traditional Chinese ink art painting with Western Abstract Expressionism – a style that later came to be known as New Ink Movement.

Three of Hong Kong&#8217;s leading art galleries, Maria Kiang Chinese Art, 88 Gallery and Chelesa Art, have joined forces to host Convergence – one of the most important satellite art exhibitions overlapping with Art Basel. Spanning Chinese objets d&#8217;art, historic furniture by Robert Goossens and ink paintings by contemporary artist Ren Zhong, the art exhibition deftly marries modernity with nostalgia through its showcase.

While anticipating Art Basel, it&#8217;ll be a shame to miss this particular satellite art exhibition happening at CityU Exhibition Gallery, in somewhat faraway Kowloon Tong. Titled &#8220;Art Deco. The France-China Connection&#8221;, the exhibition brings together Art-Deco-style art objects of Chinese origin, including furniture, sculptures, paintings, posters, costumes, ceramic glassware, vases, jewellery, etc. all of which have been deeply influenced by the French Art Deco Movement of the 1920s.

For the first time ever in Hong Kong, works of 10 French artists made between 1949 and 2017 will be showcased under one roof, courtesy of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.operagallery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Opera Gallery</a>, Hong Kong. Always a pioneer in Hong Kong’s art scenario, <a href="//www.gafencushop.com/inside-hong-kongs-opera-gallery/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Opera Gallery</a> proudly presents French Maze, a selection of 27 artworks from French masters, ranging from the Post War period to contemporary times. Running from 17 May to 30 June 2018, the exhibition offers art connoisseurs a chance to turn the pages of art history, where French art plays a pivotal role in shaping European and world art scenes.
Figurative and abstract, these compositions form a collection of highly personal memories and ideas, interweaving the artists’ reflections and their artistic paths. Exploring different styles and mediums in the French art scene, French Maze will showcase works by Marc Chagall, Bernard Buffet, Jean Dubuffet and Mathieu Georges to the contemporary Andre Brasilier, Pierre Soulages, Chu The-Chun and Robert Combas, Andre’ Lanskoy and Haudressy Pascal.

Andre Brasilier’s work is typified by a breezy lyricism, wherein real-life subjects are transposed into dreamlike settings. Brasilier’s images portray a peaceful world, with delicate composition and colour harmonies bathed in soft, cool light.&nbsp;
Marc Chagall’s world is dreamlike as well, with flying lovers, musicians, circus figures, flowers and animals – all intense personal symbols that combine in a complex tapestry of multiple narratives.
Jean Dubuffet – known for his idealistic approach to aesthetics – embraced the so-called ‘low art’ and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favour of what he believed was a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.

Hong Kong’s art scene is already gearing up for March, most art-centric month of the year. Ahead of the two biggest art events in March – Art Basel and Art Central – the art galleries are hosting an array of art exhibitions by both local and overseas artists.
The most recent one to have caught our attention was Mike Dargas’ solo exhibition at Opera Gallery running from 19 January to 9 February. A German artist based in Los Angeles, he specialises in the perfect fusion of classic technique with the aesthetics of the digital age. Simply put, his paintings look so real that unless you look closely, they look like photographs.
Through this hyper-realistic technique, he explores the various nuances of human skin. A recurrent theme of his paintings is a frozen moment in time that arrests the path of a liquid dripping from a model’s face. This stillness – poignant in its spontaneity – captures the painting’s inner soul in a perfect moment. His current exhibition at the Opera Gallery, titled ‘Healing Beauty’, is all about this perfection of the soul and the feminine, fragile nature of identity. Dargas says, “My paintings catch an emotional snapshot and try to evoke a certain feeling to the viewer”.
