Now a bona-fide leading man, Cumberbatch’s chameleonic acting abilities have seen him cinematically embody a series of other fictional and real-life characters to impressive success: he played superhuman villain Khan Noonien Singh in 2013’s Star Trek: Into the Darkness, Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit anthology, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate, code-cracker Alan Turing in the WWII movie The Imitation Game (2014) and – in perhaps his biggest role to date – multiple outings as Dr Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Having lived in the limelight for well over a decade now, pretty much every aspect of Cumberbatch’s life has received media attention. From the personal – much hubbub was made of the purportedly £300,000 engagement ring he bestowed upon now-wife, theatre director Sophie Hunter – to the professional – he was slammed for calling black actors ‘coloured’ in 2015 – you’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s not much left to learn about the Sherlock Holmes star, but the following facts make intriguing reading&#8230;

Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born on 19 July 1976 in London’s Hammersmith district and seemed to be destined for the big screen. After all, his parents, Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, were established actors boasting countless television and stage production credits. Yet, their chosen calling encouraged the young Cumberbatch to seek a more stable profession. Speaking of his parents, who are now in their 80s, he shared: “[Acting is] a very odd, peripatetic, crazed, out-of-your-control work and social schedule. It’s very hard to plan a family life, let alone know where the next pay cheque is coming from, so they worked very, very hard as my parents, and actors, to afford me an education whereby I had the opportunity and the privilege to try and channel myself towards other goals.”
So, which profession did he have in mind?&nbsp; “For a while, I wanted to be a barrister because there’s definitely a crossover with criminal law,” he mused. “I would’ve loved the performance of court, the idea of persuading people, storytelling and all that. It parallels beautifully with acting, lots of frustrated, amateur dramatics going on in court all the time. I think lots of barristers literally perform in amateur dramatic societies and are very good actors. It’s a massive crossover.”
From Lama to Lamda

After graduating from Harrow public school and before studying drama at the University of Manchester and then the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (Lamda), the Dr Strange star decided to take a gap year. Unlike most of his peers, however, he chose to volunteer his time, teaching English at a Tibetan monastery in Darjeeling, India. In return, he learnt a thing or two about meditation. “I’d always been fascinated by the idea of meditation and what it meant,” he once said. “In India, I went on a retreat with a lama – several days of incantation to clear and purify the mind. It was incredible and I kind of floated out of there after two weeks.”

Although playing ‘the world’s greatest detective’ may have catapulted Cumberbatch to the big leagues, his first inclination was to reject the part. “I heard about it and thought that it sounds like an idea to [re-franchise] something to make money. It could be a bit cheap and cheesy,” he explained. “But then I found out who was involved&#8230; My mum had done a few episodes of Coupling with Steven Moffat, and Mark Gatiss was a huge hero of mine, so I knew the stable was good. I thought I would read it, and then I fell in love with it.” 
Nearly the End?

While filming the 2005 miniseries, To the Ends of the Earth, in South Africa – about a young man sailing to Australia on his own gap year of sorts – the actor had a frightening near-death experience. During a production break, he and two co-stars headed out to learn how to scuba dive when they had a flat tyre. “The three of us were trying to change the tyre when these six [armed] men appeared suddenly from the eucalyptus. They said: ‘Put your hands on your head; don’t look at us,’ and were frisking us for drugs, money, weapons. Then they bundled us into the car and put me in the boot,” he recalls. 
It was quick thinking on his part that probably saved his life. “I said: ‘There’s a problem with my heart and my brain. I will die, possibly have a fit, and it will be a problem for you. I will be a dead Englishman in your car. Not good.’” This impromptu warning deterred the felons from proceeding any further with their kidnapping plot. Cumberbatch and his colleagues were dumped by the roadside and left for locals to find.

Prior to filming The Fifth Estate, Bill Condon’s biopic about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the meticulous actor reached out to the man himself to prepare for the role. The response, though, was rather less welcoming than he might have hoped. While Assange stated that he would very much enjoy meeting him, the majority of his reply consisted of trying to convince the leading man not to do the movie. He said, “You will be used, as a hired gun, to assume the appearance of the truth in order to assassinate it. To present me as someone morally compromised and to place me in a falsified history. To create a work, not of fiction, but of debased truth.” 
Thankfully, Assange’s designated portrayer was not deterred. Cumberbatch declared that he “wanted to create a three-dimensional portrait of a man far more maligned in the&nbsp;tabloid&nbsp;press than he is in our film to remind people that he is not just the weird, white-haired Australian dude wanted in Sweden, hiding in an embassy behind&nbsp;Harrods, but a true force to be reckoned with, [who] achieved the realisation of the great ideal.” 
It’s this same dedication to his craft that has typified Cumberbatch’s past roles and captivated audiences the world over. And, hopefully, one of the profession’s most memorable names, and most skilled performers, will continue to bring that same commitment to his future works as well.

Strange Attractor: Unfolding the life and career of Benedict Cumberbatch

When Robert Downey Jr donned his now-iconic red-and-yellow armour in 2008’s Iron Man, few could have imagined that his successful portrayal of “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” Tony Stark would spawn a cinematic franchise the likes of which the world had never seen before. Indeed, since this opening instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – the massive movie franchise run by Marvel Studios, based off of characters from Marvel Comics – cinemagoers across the globe have fallen in love with Iron Man and his merry band of superhero friends, The Avengers.

Much of this ‘Marvel-lous’ world’s success lies in its deft ability to blend jaw-dropping action scenes, poignant storylines and irreverent humour, which have pretty much become the calling card of the Marvel movie-going experience, infecting even the most cynical critics with Marvel Fever and causing them to root for such out-of-this-world protagonists as a gamma ray-infused rage monster (The Hulk), an interchangeably-sized ex-con (Ant-Man), a talking tree (Groot of Guardians of the Galaxy), and everything in between.
It is precisely this magic formula that has allowed Marvel to far outstrip any studio competitor, leading it to spin one collective story across 22 movies and three separate phases in what is colloquially known as The Infinity Saga. This superlative success has also translated into lucrative financial gains, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe having grossed over US$22 billion worldwide to date.

However, now, with Iron Man dead, Captain America seeking post-retirement bliss and Spider-Man caught in a web of disputes that may see him exiting the MCU forever, it’s safe to assume that the recently-announced Phase Four line-up will be a very different beast from the 22-instalment saga that preceded it. While the films are almost all still in preproduction, Marvel fans the world over are already abuzz about what to expect. Kevin Feige, the franchise’s executive producer, has also added to the anticipation by dropping a few spoilers as well. So what, exactly, can we expect?
First, as confirmed by Marvel, we can expect nine different instalments – a mix of feature films and TV series – which will run from 2020 to 2022. The studio has already promised to bring back some familiar faces, including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, in addition to introducing several brand new characters. There have also been less-than-subtle hints that this will be the most inclusive line-up in MCU history, with its first Asian superhero, first openly-queer character and first deaf superhero, all soon to finally get their fair share of the spotlight.

The most well-known of the next slate may well be Black Widow, set for release on 1 May 2020 as the debut Phase Four outing. Given that Natasha Romanov (aka the Black Widow) forfeited her life in the fight against supervillain Thanos, the upcoming prequel will undoubtedly indulge in Marvel’s penchant for time-travelling shenanigans, transporting audiences back to a time when she was hale and healthy. If rumours are to be believed, the movie will take place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. A glimpse of the confirmed cast / character list, meanwhile, reveals that we will get a more in-depth look at the Red Room, the Russian superspy programme that spawned Romanov. Scarlett Johansson, reprising her role as the assassiness-turned-hero, will be joined by David Harbour (Stranger Things), and Academy Award, BAFTA and Laurence Olivier Award winner Rachel Weisz.
The God of Thunder also looks set to break with his traditional trope in Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth instalment of the Thor series, which is slated for release on 5 November 2021. While the return of its star, Chris Hemsworth, and Ragnarok director Take Waititi were all but expected, the news that Natalie Portman (who acted as Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest, six years ago) would not only be reprising her role, but would take over the mantle of Thor from Hemsworth caused much uproar. Add to this the fact that Valkyrie, last seen becoming the new King of Asgard, will be looking for her Queen, and this is one movie that surely has everyone at the edge of their seats.

Meanwhile, the Sorcerer Supreme – ably portrayed by an American-accented Benedict Cumberbatch – is also set to return to theatres in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness (7 May 2021). While its plot is yet to be revealed, the movie presents an exciting opportunity to introduce the MCU to the multiverse – where many universes coexist simultaneously. However, in a marked shift from the norm, Marvel has already announced that this will be the franchise’s first-ever horror film, so expect a higher-than-normal dose of spine-tingling thrills, all courtesy of the main villain, the chillingly-named Nightmare.
From here, the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Four line-up gets more murky, with little real information available as yet. What we do know, however, is that – come 12 February 2021 – Marvel’s first Asian superhero will be getting his very own feature film in the form of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu of Kim’s Convenience fame as the titular character. The superhero, also known as The Master of Kung Fu, is pegged to come up against the real Mandarin (portrayed by Hong Kong’s very own Tony Leung), the villain falsely embodied in Iron Man 3 by Ben Kingsley and Guy Pierce.

Another somewhat-new introduction is The Eternals, starring A-listers like Angelina Jolie, Selma Hayek and Kit Harrington. It also features the first deaf superhero, Makkari, to be portrayed by The Walking Dead’s Lauren Ridloff. While these mythical characters have been hinted at in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they haven’t been explicitly name-checked until now. According to the comic books, though, the Eternals are a race of superpowered beings created by a group of space gods called the Celestials. Thanos, the supervillain at the heart of the franchise to date, was an Eternal, and the upcoming movie will introduce others still.
Interestingly, nearly half of Marvel’s Phase Four line-up consists of small-screen series. While the studio has had TV outings before, they’ve never been a part of its cinematic universe so far. Now, though, thanks to a partnership with the newly-announced Disney+ video on-demand service launched by Marvel’s parent company, Disney, fans can expect several of their MCU favourites to hit the small screen post-Endgame. The first of these series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is set to release in&nbsp; the autumn of 2020, and follows the adventures of the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes. Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s brother and the God of Mischief, will also get his own spin-off&nbsp; show, which follows his adventures upon escaping with the Tesseract to an alternate dimension. Two other TV shows, one featuring Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and the other with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s The Vision, round out the list.

In all, while Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely retain many of the facets that have made its movies such box-office hits, it is refreshing to see it move away from the tried-and-tested style of its predecessors. Be it through a wider array of characters or the use of mixed-media channels, it could be that this experimental style could yield even bigger profits for the studio. While it will be seven months before we can begin to see the results of this gambol, we can, in the meanwhile, contemplate the many Marvel-lous possibilities&#8230;

He’s intrigued, infuriated and amused as the 21st century incarnation of Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective. In the rebooted Star Trek franchise, he nearly saw off Captain Kirk and his crew before their re-tooled five-year mission even had a chance to get out of space dock. Now, he is about to debut his take on one of the most remarkable characters in the Marvel Comics universe – a universe that is already home to the mighty Avengers, the extraordinary X-Men and the somewhat eccentric Guardians of the Galaxy.
Doctor Strange, however, Marvel’s master of the arcane arts, is said to represent the greatest cinematic challenge the comic book group has ever tackled. Not only does his multi-dimension, hopping backstory require an unparalleled display of special effects, bringing to life the central character – otherworldly, aloof and almost omnipotent – in a way that could engage the modern blockbuster audience but it also calls for a leading man with a certain magic of his own. It didn’t require a huge leap of faith, then, to cast Benedict Cumberbatch.
The film’s director, Scott Derrickson, certainly had no doubts that Cumberbatch was the man for the job. At first, though, despite the obvious fit, it seemed it wouldn’t happen. The actor was already contracted to play Hamlet in a London stage production at the very time the film was scheduled to shoot.

“Sherlock might be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second that he’s one of them”Derrickson recalls: “Although he was the only actor we seriously considered, it just wasn’t possible. To his credit, he said: ‘I can’t bail out of Hamlet, I’ve given my word.’”
The film’s producers then looked at possible replacements, including Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto. Derrickson, though, insisted on getting his man, reportedly telling Marvel Studios: “It’s got to be Benedict.” Ultimately, he prevailed. In almost an unprecedented move, Marvel agreed to postpone both the filming schedule and the release date of Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch was in.
It was a decision that Cumberbatch clearly welcomed. He said: “I really thought I had to kiss it goodbye. If you can’t jump on board when the ride’s going past, that’s usually it. It was a huge compliment when they came back to me. I knew then I had to fulfil their faith in me.”

Playing the lead in a Hollywood blockbuster is the latest milestone in the remarkable rise to fame of the 40-year-old British actor. It was only six years ago, however, that he seemingly sprang from nowhere to international acclaim in Sherlock, the BBC’s multi-award winning reimagining of Conan Doyle’s classic detective tales.
It’s clear Cumberbatch adores playing the 21st century Holmes. He says: “I was thrilled with how Sherlock was received. It was such great fun to film. It’s so rewarding when something you enjoy doing is so well received.”
The show, a co-production with PBS, a US network, has now run for three series, with a fourth set to be screened early next year. Its clever and imaginative adaptations of the original Conan Doyle stories have proved a hit with audiences from Beirut to Beijing. For all its story-telling genius, however, it’s Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the strange, sociopathic, emotionally austere Sherlock that has made the show such a hit.
So what does the actor make of his somewhat damaged alter ego? He says: “I don’t think he’s damaged at all. I think it’s all self-inflicted. I think there’s actually an adolescent inside him that is being deliberately repressed in order for him to try and become the ultimate, calculating deduction machine.
“What we do is remind the audience that somebody they have fallen in love with has had to let vulnerability into his life. He has a moral compass of some kind and is actually on the side of the good guys. That, though, shouldn’t make him any less terrifying.
“As Sherlock himself says: ‘I may be on the side of the angels, but don’t think for one second I’m one of them.’ He’s violent and incredibly dark, largely because of what he deals with. There should be moments where you are very uncertain of this person, times that you find him eccentric and rude, but still attractive.”
Cumberbatch also believes that Sherlock’s trademark social awkwardness is a deliberate ploy. He says: “He knows how to turn it on. He knows how to be charming. He knows how to play all the games we play in every social interaction. Yet he withdraws from them.

“It’s an athlete thing. He’s reserving what he needs for when he needs it. That’s a huge difference between him and me. I kind of spend myself too easily. I’m far more of a putting it all out there person, whereas he’s incredibly controlled. That is what’s remarkable about him.
“It’s all about control. He just wants control. I think what he realises – and what Dr Watson (his friend and collaborator) teaches him – is that it’s all very well to understand human behaviour, but you have to be human to really get the benefit of it.”
The overnight success of Sherlock sometimes obscures the fact that Cumberbatch was actually a successful actor before the show came along and remains so beyond it. Despite his fondness for the role, he was recently quoted in online media saying that series 4 of Sherlock “feels like the end of an era” – hinting that he may not return to the show as his increasing popularity and work commitments crowd his hectic schedule. 
Cumberbatch studied drama at Manchester University, before graduating to LAMDA, the prestigious theatre academy. His first professional appearances were at London’s West End, before breaking into TV while still in his 20s.
He is often bracketed as part of a generation of “posh boy” actors, alongside the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston (a close friend of his). In fact, all of them were educated at some of Britain’s most expensive private schools – he went to Harrow, for example, while Redmayne and Hiddleston both attended Eton.
While he’s on record as decrying “posh-bashing” in the popular press, he is unapologetic about his background. He says: “I am desperately proud of my parents for sending me to Harrow. It was a huge stretch for them. They were working actors who often never knew when the next payday would come along. My parents wanted the best for me. I wasn’t sent to the school my dad went to. I’m not a hereditary peer or anything like that.” 
In the past, Cumberbatch has suggested that his social class has hindered his acting career, limiting the number of roles that he is considered for. Post-Sherlock, however, that seems much less of a handicap.

In the last few years, he’s starred as the British war-time code-breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game – a role for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He’s also played the pious plantation owner William Prince Ford in the award-winning movie 12 Years a Slave and provided the voice of Smaug, The Hobbit’s terrifying dragon. He also turned in a mesmerising performance as Khan, the arch-villain in Into Darkness, the second instalment in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Although Doctor Strange is set to take Cumberbatch to another level entirely, he is quick to put the role into a broader perspective. He says: “I’m very excited about the opportunities that a bigger audience gives you, but that’s all it is, really. It’s another source of work. People look at being in big films as a sort of zenith. It’s really not.
“For me, every single job is a new beginning, a new starting point where you can learn again and begin again. It’s never a case of: ‘I’ve made it.’ Don’t get me wrong, I count my blessings every day — it’s been wonderful. I do, though, try to treat each job as a job, no matter what scale it is. Otherwise, it could get quite overwhelming. If you ever started believing your own press, you could go a little insane.”
What comes next for Cumberbatch in the wake of Doctor Strange is still unclear. In the immediate future, though, there’s series four of Sherlock to look forward to. The BBC has already confirmed the titles of the first two episodes – The Six Thatchers (a take on the Conan Doyle story The Six Napoleons) and The Lying Detective (a reference to The Dying Detective, an adventure where Holmes narrowly escapes being poisoned).
The pre-publicity has already suggested that Moriarty – Sherlock’s arch-enemy – is set to make a comeback, despite having apparently died in an earlier instalment. There’s also the likelihood that a third Holmes brother – possibly played by Cumberbatch’s pal Tom Hiddleston – will put in an appearance. Meanwhile, the show’s creators have heralded the arrival of a new bad guy, one that they describe as “purest evil, the most evil villain we’ve ever had.”
For his part, Cumberbatch isn’t giving much away, while still promising plenty of surprises for viewers to look forward to. He says: “We’ve moved on to a new step in the evolution of Sherlock in the new series. It will be dark, though. Myopically dark. We’re talking about end of the universe dark…”
Happily, this won’t be the end of Sherlock, as Cumberbatch has already signed up to a fifth series. With his movie career about to go stratospheric in the wake of Doctor Strange – with the Sorcerer Supreme already rumoured to appear in the next Avengers outing – it may be a while before we actually return to Baker Street.

CLOCKENFLAP MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL
This year’s Clockenflap lineup sees the legendary Chemical Brothers headlining, arguably backed by the three-day festival’s most eclectic musical mix to date. Lovers of indie, funk, post-rock, raprave, reggae and more will all find something to tap their toes to.
Sharing the spotlight with the headliners will be Sigur Rós, an Icelandic band best known for its ethereal sound, and Foals, the English indie-rockers. Every year, Clockenflap – first staged in 2008 – seems to get a little bigger.
This year, the event relocates from its longtime home of the West Kowloon Cultural District to the Central Harbourfront space.
It’s not all about the music, though. Art exhibits and a variety of performances are also promised, all designed to amuse, perplex and intrigue viewers.
