<p>A joyful Jessi Chloe Chen shares her fervour for new motherhood, meaningful luxury and mental wellbeing</p>

<p>Jessi Chloe Chen breezes into the restaurant just a few minutes past the agreed time for our cosy pre-shoot lunch. Though no apologies are needed, the multi-industry brand consultant flashes a warm smile, explaining that she’s busy juggling a relatively new, incredibly meaningful role. She recently added being a mum to her many responsibilities. Over seasonal tasting plates, we dive straight into parenting advice, swapping stories about sleepless nights, first smiles, and the tiny everyday miracles that make the chaos worthwhile.</p>

<p>Chen is clearly committed to this new chapter in her multitasking lifestyle. Her face lights up at every mention of her baby daughter. Motherhood isn’t something she fits around her work; it’s the heartbeat around which everything else pulses. “My daughter just turned seven months old, and so much of my happiness comes from her,” she enthuses. “Seeing the world through her eyes, travelling together, experiencing firsts as a family are all very special.&#8221;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Boundless Horizons</h3>



<p>Travel is second nature to Chen, and it shaped her own childhood. She grew up between Hong Kong and Melbourne, a true third-culture kid navigating two vibrant but vastly different worlds. “It meant learning two very different cultures and ways of living early,” she reflects. Melbourne grounded her with practical life skills and resilience in spaces where she didn&#8217;t always fit in, while Hong Kong instilled ambition, efficiency and high standards – “things can be done quickly and well here,” she affirms.</p>

<p>Attending international schools honed her ability to translate between worlds, adjusting her communication to connect with anyone from any background. This cross-cultural fluency informs her business approach today: “It really helped to shape my worldview and carry multiple perspectives at once, giving me a more global perspective.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Curiosity Over Convention</h3>



<p>Chen’s 15-year career in Hong Kong defies neat boxes, spanning fashion, property, luxury, floristry and advocacy. What drives her to leap across such diverse fields? “I&#8217;ve never followed a traditional path; it has always been about relationships,” she explains. “When an opportunity comes along, or I’m considering starting something, I ask myself: am I genuinely interested, can I be useful, and can I learn quickly? If it’s a yes to all three, I’ll usually give it a good crack.”</p>

<p>Building expertise in reading trends and momentum, she began leading sales and marketing at a contemporary fashion brand, then moved into real estate as Managing Director of Fuin, overseeing branding, operations and strategy. Entrepreneurship had come knocking in 2017 with Andrsn, the artisanal online florist that pioneered boxed roses in Hong Kong. As co-founder and Creative Director, she turned a passion for minimalist design and Australian-imported blooms into a market leader.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Meaningful Shift</h3>



<p>In her current role as Asia-Pacific Director of Onda, the luxury membership platform, Chen is at the forefront of hospitality’s evolution. “Luxury has been shifting from ‘more’ to ‘meaningful’ for a while now,” she observes. “Time and health are the ultimate form of luxury.”</p>

<p>How does she juggle the business hats of director, consultant and entrepreneur with those of wife and mother? “I don’t think balance exists. At least not all at once,” she admits candidly. “Anyone claiming they’re winning in every area, every day, is lying! Something always gives.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Anchors That Matter</h3>



<p>Her secret? Prioritising ruthlessly: “My anchors are family, health and top work priorities – the rest orbits around them.” She schedules self-care like she would a meeting – Sunday resets, evenings after her daughter sleeps – and guards her mental wellbeing fiercely. “When I&#8217;m in a good place, everything else flows.”</p>

<p>Since 2018, she has been Managing Partner at Talking Mental, a mental-health initiative founded by longtime friend Aaron Stadlin-Robbie. Her advocacy stems from personal experience: “I had experienced panic attacks and anxiety in the past, and I know how lonely the search for help can feel.”</p>

<p>She helps create approachable conversations, panels and partnerships to reduce stigma and improve access. “If we can make these conversations feel normal and easier to navigate, we’re doing something good,” she says.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Grace and Grit</h3>



<p>What does being a leader mean in today’s tough environment? “Leadership for me is providing clarity, being prepared and accountable,” she explains. “Staying calm, not being reactive, and moving a team towards solutions.” Boundaries are essential, but so is being pleasant to work with – “one thing that is overlooked too often”.</p>

<p>Her advice to young women aspiring to lead is “just start, even if you don’t feel ready”. She elaborates: “You can’t perfect something you haven&#8217;t tried; you learn the most by being in the thick of it. And through that process, your definition of success will evolve as you do.”</p>

<p>For Chen, success is fluid and ever-evolving. “I rarely feel truly ‘successful’ and I’m comfortable with that. A little healthy dissatisfaction keeps me learning and ambitious,” she shares. What she chases most is daily gratitude and pride in progress across life’s facets.</p>

<p>During challenges, she recharges through people. It’s no surprise when she declares, “I’m a people person. Speaking with my closest friends and mentors resets my perspective and keeps me moving.”</p>

<p>She finds happiness in “the small, consistent quiet moments that are closest to you. These are the ones that matter most.” It’s a beautifully simple philosophy, and right now, much of that joy flows from her daughter.</p>

<p>At the end of our shoot, jokingly reminding the crew to make her more elegant and eloquent, Chen’s candidness and excitement are palatable. She’s thrilled to head home to join her husband and be with their child. She arrived a touch late because of motherhood’s joyful demands, and she rushes off for the same reason. Her rhythm of life these days equates to one small, perfect milestone at a time.</p>

<p>Spring is the season when everything begins to feel lighter, fresher, and a bit more open. After the heavier foods and bold wines of winter, many connoisseurs naturally crave brighter, more aromatic pours. The best spring wines share a sense of freshness and vibrancy, boasting crisp acidity, moderate alcohol and flavours that echo the season – think citrus, herbs, flowers and fresh berries. They are inviting, food-friendly and uplifting.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Welcoming Whites</h3>



<p>One of the most classic spring choices is Sauvignon Blanc, an ode to sunlight and fresh air. It’s hard to beat the lively acidity, grassy aromas and citrus-driven mouthfeel of this white wine when the weather warms up in March.</p>

<p>New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc exhibits bold flavours of passion fruit and gooseberry with a zesty punch that wakes up the palate. French styles, especially from the Loire Valley (like Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé), offer more restraint, with notes of lemon, wet stone and subtle herbs. Both versions pair beautifully with seafood, goat’s cheese and asparagus.</p>

<p>Pinot Grigio is another seasonal go-to. It tends to be clean, crisp and uncomplicated, making it a perfect everyday spring wine. Italian Pinot Grigio is delightfully straightforward: light body, gentle citrus, apple and pear notes, and an easy, refreshing finish. It’s great for casual sipping, picnics or parties where guests prefer wines that slip down without comment. If you want a more flavourful version, look for Pinot Gris from Oregon or Alsace, which offers more texture and ripe fruit.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pink Pleasers</h3>



<p>No spring wine list is complete without rosé. Dry rosé, especially from Provence, has become almost synonymous with warm-weather drinking. These pours are pale, delicate and refreshing, with subtle red-berry notes, hints of melon, and clean minerality.</p>

<p>Beyond Provence, Spain makes excellent rosado (often a bit darker and fruitier), while California and Oregon offer rosés with lively fruit and a slightly more robust character. Rosé is one of the easiest spring picks because it fits almost any mood: casual, celebratory or spontaneous.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sweet Surrender</h3>



<p>For those who enjoy a touch of sweetness, Riesling is one of the most rewarding spring choices. It doesn’t have to be sweet; Germany, Austria and Washington State all produce dry Rieslings, yet even off-dry versions can feel bright and balanced thanks to the grape’s naturally high acidity. Expect flavours of lime, green apple and white peach, and sometimes floral or mineral notes.</p>

<p>Riesling pairs exceptionally well with spicy foods, making it a great wine to accompany Thai, Indian or Sichuan cuisine. A chilled glass of Riesling on a mild spring afternoon is both refreshing and comforting.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Red Chill</h3>



<p>Spring isn’t only for white wines. Light, chillable reds shine at this time of year, and one of the best is Gamay, especially in the form of Beaujolais. These wines are fruity, juicy and low in tannins, with flavours of strawberry and cherry, and sometimes a subtle earthiness. Serving them slightly chilled brings out the lively acidity of the grape to the extent that they can be almost as refreshing as white wine. The Beaujolais-Villages appellation offers exceptional everyday value, while Cru options like Morgon, Fleurie, Brouilly and Moulin-à-Vent provide more structure and nuance.</p>

<p>Another solid spring red is Pinot Noir. While some versions can be too rich for warmer weather, many bottles from Oregon, Germany or the Loire Valley lean toward the lighter side. These wines offer gentle red fruit, subtle earthiness and bright acidity, making them an elegant choice for spring dinners. They pair beautifully with roasted chicken, salmon and vegetable dishes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fizz Finesse</h3>



<p>For something sparkling, spring is an excellent time for Prosecco or Cava. Both offer floral and fruity aromas, delicate bubbles, and a celebratory feel without the price tag of Champagne. The Italian pour tends to be softer and fruitier, while Spain’s traditional sparkling wine has more structure and a slightly toastier character. They work well at brunch, as a complement to light appetisers, or simply for ringing in the first warm, sunny days of the year.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Underwater Habitat</h3>



<p>One of the most ambitious examples of underwater luxury can be found in Dubai. The Floating Seahorse villas in the extravagant Heart of Europe development are just one part of an extraordinary archipelago of resorts – the World Islands – conceived by Nakheel Properties. Construction of the man-made islands just off the coast of the United Arab Emirates metropolis was curtailed by the 2008 financial crisis, but nearly 50 of the partially submerged residences, designed by architects from the Kleindienst Group, are due for completion this year.</p>

At sea level, living and dining spaces connect seamlessly with the surrounding water.</p>

<p>Another bold Dubai project, launched by Dutch developer New Living on Water a decade ago, involves pod-shaped floating residences that resemble sleek spacecraft resting on the sea. Despite their futuristic appearance, these homes are fully practical, each connected to land by a private car jetty. Inside, the amenities are nothing short of astonishing. Residents enjoy a lift, a six-car garage, an outdoor terrace, a private dining room, underwater viewing areas, and should the surrounding water not suffice, a swimming pool. Emphasising sustainability, the pods are powered by renewable energy sources and come in three sizes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">River Beds</h3>



<p>Floating homes need not be futuristic to be breathtaking. On the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, the Fennell Residence proves that water-based architecture can be poetic and organic. It was designed by Robert Harvey Oshatz in 2005, and would make little sense if it were located elsewhere, since its flowing curves mirror the slow movement of the river itself.</p>

<p>Douglas fir beams and Western red cedar shingles in wave-like patterns define the exterior, while Brazilian cherry floors bring warmth indoors. A sliding glass door opens onto a customised deck suspended above the water, while the master bedroom overlooks the dining area and the river beyond. A dramatic floor-to-ceiling window in the living room frames the sunset, marking peaceful days spent drifting gently with the current.</p>

<p>You know the drill when heading up The Peak: you take the tram that feels like it’s about to tip over backward, you get to the top, and suddenly you are staring at one of the most ridiculous city views on earth – Victoria Harbour sparkling like it’s trying to outshine the tourists taking selfies. And now, in The Peak Tower, they’ve dropped a spot that’s basically saying, ‘Yeah, the view is great, but wait till you taste Shanghai dumplings in our chill surroundings.’</p>

<p>Petit Jardin is the cool younger sibling of Jardin de Jade, the iconic Shanghai restaurant brand whose first Hong Kong outpost, in Wan Chai, has long attracted sophisticates who savour xiao long bao like it’s fine art. The new Peak arrival grasps that heritage, dials down the white-tablecloth stiffness, and turns it into a bastion of contemporary casual dining with a Jiangnan twist, blending Huaiyang delicacy and Shanghainese soul.</p>

<p>The first thing that hits you as you step inside is the stylish décor. A bespoke design of curvy lines and colourful mosaics hiding little symbols like rice grains and river fish is artsy but not pretentious. It transports you into a modern Jiangnan garden – but one with an Instagram filter and harbour views. The mosaic wall at the entrance is genius. It’s shaped like a giant xiao long bao with the character 品 (taste/appreciate) hidden within, plus a cheeky ‘I&nbsp;Love Xiao Long Bao’.</p>

<p>We start with the Signature Cold Appetiser Platter – five little bites that wake up your mouth like a gentle alarm clock. Drunken chicken soaked in Shaoxing wine (boozy but elegant); vegetarian ‘abalone’ that’s somehow convincing; black-and-white fungus for that crunchy texture; marinated tomatoes with preserved plum (tangy-sweet perfection); and Sichuan-style cucumber that bites back just enough. In the appetiser equivalent of foreplay, it teases you for what&#8217;s next.</p>

<p>Which, in our case, is the Signature Jiangnan Gua Bao Platter, replete with soft, pillowy buns you stuff yourself. There’s rich, sticky twice-cooked pork, stir-fried beef with leeks, shredded chicken and cucumber, plus pickled cabbage, sesame sauce and radish to mix and match like you’re building your own edible Lego set. Every bite is a flavour party: sweet, savoury, crunchy, soft. It’s casual luxury in a bun.</p>

<p>The star, though, is Shanghai Juicy Trio Assorted Xiao Long Bao. There’s original (the classic pork-soup explosion), vegetarian (a fresh medley of mushrooms, wood ear, baby corn and carrots), and mala (numbing spice). With thin skins and juicy insides, the colours white, green and red are a dim-sum traffic light that says ‘go, go, go’.</p>

<p>We also try Stir-fried Rice Cake with Pork and Vegetable, a lighter take on the usual heavy-soy versions that lets the natural sweetness of the ingredients shine. Mapo Tofu with Snapper Fillet, featuring tender fish in a spicy sauce over springy shrimp-roe noodles, is fusion without trying too hard.</p>
