<p>That exercise is good for us is a given, yet the best way to achieve fitness and adopt an active lifestyle poses some big questions. Given the hectic pace of city living, finding the time to work out or the required level of motivation may not be so straightforward. Are there quick routes to getting in shape, and can the appliance of science lead to greater strength and physical health? Here we explore some of the fitness conundrums.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Starting out</h3>



<p>It is widely known in the fitness industry that relatively low levels of exercise can bring considerable health benefits. A study published in 2022 involving 400,000 US adults over almost two decades showed that just one hour of aerobic exercise a week lowered their risk of dying by 10 to 20 per cent.</p>

<p>“Anything is better than nothing,” says Hong Kong-based personal trainer John Bower. “If somebody is in the gym for the first time in a year, and they only work out for three months, they are doing good for themselves.”</p>

<p>The key is to ramp up your activity to a level higher than you are accustomed to – your so-called habitual load. For cardio-exercise beginners, blood volume will increase within 24 hours of a workout, boosting the amount of blood plasma and oxygen supplied to the muscles. Peak blood volume is reached after just two weeks of training, and the all-important mitochondria that generate cellular energy become more widespread and efficient. Increases in maximal oxygen uptake, known as VO2 max, occur after six to eight weeks and can improve by 10 per cent into the third month.</p>

<p>Ultimately, exercise enables the nervous system to communicate more effectively with the muscles, with age and genetics helping to determine the speed that someone improves their aerobic fitness and the levels they are able to attain.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fast and furious</h3>



<p>How we exercise is another consideration. A comprehensive report by New Scientist into science-backed fitness suggests a wide range of exercises are suitable provided they are undertaken three to five times a week for about 30 to 60 minutes.</p>

<p>Studies have shown that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is most effective in achieving fitness quickly and improving exercise capacity from an aerobic and strength perspective. This routine, which involves exercising in short bursts lasting up to a minute with short breaks in between, is said to stimulate metabolism and strengthen the cardiovascular system. The key requirement is to work as hard as possible during the intense intervals.</p>

<p>Adam Sharples, a professor of epigenetics and molecular physiology at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, suggests beginners should start with two or three HIIT sessions a week mixed with longer duration activities such as jogging or swimming. According to exercise physiologist Abbi Lane of the University of Michigan, once strength has plateaued under HIIT, full-body resistance training sessions should be introduced.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is too much exercise</h3>



<p>Numerous studies have indicated that vigorous activity totalling between 150 and 300 minutes a week or moderate activity of 300 to 600 minutes – or an equivalent combination of both – is needed to achieve maximal health benefits. Moderate exercise is classed as a brisk walk or a game of badminton, whereas vigorous equates to hiking in the mountains or riding a bike at full speed.</p>

<p>According to physical activity epidemiologist Duck-chul Lee of the University of Pittsburgh, when it comes to moderate-intensity exercise and reducing the risk of an early death, there is no such thing as too much exercise.</p>

<p>There is less consensus about the health benefits of high-intensity workouts, however. Some studies have linked extreme high-intensity sports such as ultramarathons with increased cardiovascular problems, and an escalation of cortisol, the so-called stress hormone, which can cause anxiety and sleep deprivation. Other experts, though, have pointed to the fact that the first 200 men to run a mile in under four minutes exceeded their predicted life expectancy by an average of 4.7 years. The jury, it seems, is still out on the risks of overdoing intense exercise.</p>

<p>Bower says there is an increasing acceptance within the fitness industry that overtraining causes plateaus in development, and emerging data from heart-rate training specialist Morpheus indicates that it can lead to reduced fitness. He notes that Fitbit has started to display rudimentary functionality to guide people to exercise less on occasion.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Slow and sure</h3>



<p>Bower is an advocate of slow running – also called zone 2 training – which is exercising at a pace that raises your heart rate but leaves you able to chat. He stresses that this level of activity stimulates the mitochondria in the cells to a state of full activation.</p>

<p>Likewise, physicist Steve Haake of Sheffield Hallam University advocates that the best way to burn fat is by running slower – it prompts the body to break down stored fat to use as fuel. Indeed, elite long-distance runners do most of their training in zone 2, as running hard every day overloads the body’s ability to adapt and recover. According to Haake, it is the cumulative expenditure of energy rather than the intensity of effort that is key to achieving many of the physiological benefits of exercise.</p>

<p>Ultimately, slow running has great benefits and can build up a fitness base that enables a person to raise their game or go to the next level if they wish. Bower recently advised a client to do five times the amount of low-heart-rate training than HIIT to allow their body time to recover.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Motivation matters</h3>



<p>Bower also highlights the importance of motivation in the quest to attain fitness, believing that people should set out with clear goals of what they want to achieve and why. “Some people are motivated by group pressure; some are motivated by objectively measurable results, and some are not motivated until they have a crisis and then they become motivated,” he notes.</p>

<p>He opines that the route to fitness will be paved with setbacks, but those with clarity of purpose can overcome them. “You are going to have sickness, you are going to have work trouble, you are going to have family crisis, you are going to be unable to achieve your goals, and then you have to get back on the wagon,” he says. “It doesn’t matter that you didn’t train for a week or three months; what matters is that you got back to it.”</p>

<p>Gains in strength, according to Bower, are less easily lost since muscles are more resilient to inactivity. “The good news about physical strength is because it is associated with having muscle cells and neurological connections, you can retrain relatively quickly,” he says.</p>

<p>First up, <strong>Franck Muller</strong> has honoured the serpent by debuting an amazing-looking model, Silhouette CX Snake. This elegant 18-carat rose-gold watch succeeds in reflecting the sinuous nature of the reptile both as a motif on the dial and in a new asymmetrical case, which is an imaginative reworking of the Swiss manufacture’s statement Cintrée Curvex shape. The Silhouette CX’s curves and undulating lines mirror the writhing motion of the slippery snake on the watch face, where it appears in two dazzling swathes of tightly packed deep-green emeralds in the snow-setting technique. Hand-applied numerals on the sun-patterned guilloché dial are aligned with the unconventional dimensions of the watch design, as is the casing ring which houses the inhouse MVT FM 2038 movement. Embossed with a snakeskin texture, the hand-sewn serpentine-green calf-leather strap adds another touch to a timepiece that coolly captures the snake’s allure.</p>

<p>The <em>Spirit of Big Bang Year of the Snake</em> watch maintains<strong> Hublot</strong>’s tradition of reinterpreting models to mark the dawn of each Chinese New Year. A striking aspect of the timepiece, which is limited to just 88 pieces, is a dial illuminated by a three-dimensional gold-plated snake applique that wraps around the chronograph counters. Created with the aid of laser technology, this golden spectacle appears even more surreal as the dial is framed by a microblasted and polished black ceramic bezel engraved with snake-like scales. This look and feel extends to the rubber strap, thus achieving a sinuous, slithering whole. Typical of this line of watches, the self-winding skeletonised HUB4700 movement is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal of the open dial and display caseback.</p>

<p><strong>Blancpain</strong>, similarly, has launched the next iteration of its ongoing homage to the Chinese calendar. Housed in a 45.2mm platinum case, <em>Villeret Calendrier Chinois Traditionnel 2025</em> features a fetching green Grand Feu enamel dial with an assortment of indications displayed in Chinese character-inscribed sub-dials, including the five elements, celestial stems and leap month. Naturally, a wood snake is spied through the 12 o’clock aperture of the new Chinois Traditionnel watch. Artisans at Blancpain’s Métiers d’Art workshop, meanwhile, embossed the 22-carat white-gold rotor with an arresting image of a coiled snake, accompanied by the words ‘serpent’ and ‘wood’ in Chinese.</p>

<p>Odes to Chinese New Year appear at back and front of <strong>Longines</strong>’ <em>Conquest Heritage Year of the Snake</em>. The watch’s vintage ’50s-style sunray gradient dial is an auspicious red, while Beijing-based artist Wu Jian’an beautifully engraves the caseback with a serpent inspired by the Chinese folklore, <em>Legend of the White Snake</em>. The accompanying words, “2025 Year of the Snake – Limited Edition – One of 2025”, are also designed to bring good luck and fortune. An inhouse L888 automatic movement provides 72 hours of power reserve and 10 times the standard magnetic resistance.</p>

<p>The <em>Reverso Tribute Enamel Snake</em>, strictly limited and made to order, is the third timepiece in <strong>Jaeger-LeCoultre</strong>’s Chinese Zodiac range. A snake motif has been chiselled onto the reverse side of the pink-gold watch case by an inhouse enameller using a modelled engraving technique. Requiring 10 different chisels and 80 hours of work, this painstaking process is made even more arduous by a surface of glossy black Grand Feu enamel rather than bare metal. The glowing black background – also used for the dial – perfectly contrasts with the intricate details of the snake’s body. Set in golden clouds, the serpent appears to shimmer and writhe with each movement of light.</p>

Limited to 25 pieces each in pink gold or platinum, the timely new edition celebrates the powers of the snake with a lifelike miniature picture of a majestic cobra atop a rock on the dial. The finest enamelling and engraving techniques render a sinuous ochre-coloured serpent with matching rock and foliage on the pink-gold version, while the platinum model sees snake and rock embellished in anthracite grey with green leaves. Keeping this rich decoration unobstructed, apertures rather than hands display the time, day and date.</p>

<p>Wine produced in China received an initial boost when prestigious French names brought their expertise and financial clout to the table 40 years ago. Since those early days, winemaking in the mainland has grown considerably; it is now noted for its variety and, increasingly, its quality. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Crucial backing</h3>



<p>Just Wong, Executive Director of Beverage Operations at Wynn Macau, attributes the remarkable growth of the Chinese wine industry over the past decade to central government investment in the major wine regions in the late 1990s. He also highlights an upshot of professional expertise over recent years, such as at universities, enabling new generations of wine-industry professionals with easier access to information, knowledge and expertise. “The market primarily targets mainland Chinese consumers who are adventurous and open to try new products, including a younger consumer group,” he says.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Award Wynners</h3>



<p>Last year, the luxury Macau hotel hosted the inaugural Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards, which served as a platform for wine experts from various regions in China to collaborate, exchange knowledge and promote Chinese wines on a larger international stage. Fei Tswei Marselan Reserve 2021 from Ningxia was the competition’s brightest star, garnering the Best Wine of China Trophy. Its quality so impressed during rigorous judging that it was also awarded the titles of Best Red Wine, Best Marselan and Best of Ningxia. </p>

<p>Xige Estate N28 Chardonnay 2021, also from Ningxia, won two trophies, Best White Wine and Best Value Wine, while Domaine Franco-Chinois Petit Manseng 2018 from Hebei was hailed as Best Sweet Wine, Best Petit Manseng and Best of North China.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bettering the French</h3>



<p>According to Master of Wine Richard Hemming, the quality of wine in China is clearly improving, especially at the top end of the market. “This is thanks to significant investment, plus the increasing experience of producers,” he says. “With every vintage, they are learning more about what works best for their terroir.” </p>

<p>Like the vast majority of the so-called New World wines, most of the best wines from China are produced according to classic European techniques. “I’ve been in blind tastings where Chinese wines have beaten established French classics, so there is no question that the excellence is already there,” states Hemming, who also serves as Head of Wine for Asia at 67 Pall Mall, a group of private members’ clubs exclusively for wine lovers. This uplift in the quality of Chinese output comes at a time when global wine output is falling and competitive pressures are intensifying – market dynamics which could affect the growth of the industry. “I think growth will continue but at a slower rate,” opines the Singapore-based MW. “Around the world, consumption is falling and global trade outlooks are uncertain, so there is understandable caution about investing in wine production. Even so, the individual passions of producers will ensure that new, exciting wines continue to emerge from China.”</p>

<p>Given that so many Chinese growers are making great wines in numerous different styles, Hemming does not have a single favourite wine from the country. “I’ve tasted more wine from Ningxia than anywhere else, which shows that quality can be achieved in everything from classic bottle-fermented sparkling to expressive Pinot Noir to powerful Bordeaux blends,” he says. The superb wines of Ao Yun and Célèbre underscore Yunnan’s reputation as a region of great potential. “The former combines forthright black fruit with impressive earthy complexity as it ages, while the latter offers an orchard-full of fruit as well as a gastronomic chalkiness that bears comparison with some of the best of Burgundy,” says Hemming.&nbsp;</p>


Fine China: Chinese wine producers have upped their quality to challenge the French classics that inspired them


<p>The urge to compete has been part of the human condition for millennia, and perhaps to satisfy this craving, communities across the world have dreamed up the most perverse games and quirkiest competitions imaginable. To be an offbeat champ, you might need to endure the downright dangerous or excel at the impeccably frivolous. In some cases, bringing people and nations together is the ultimate aim. Prizes on offer are usually insignificant compared to the thrills of the ride as wild wacky wonder is injected into everyday activities. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Toe-curling feat</h3>



<p>Britain is something of a hotbed for zany competitions, often invented as a way of fulfilling the national pastime of one-upmanship through an obscure sport or a pastime that marries humour with quirkiness. The World Toe Wrestling Championships, which marked its 50th anniversary last year, is a bout of silliness held near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Akin to combining elements of arm wrestling and thumb wrestling and applying them to feet, contestants from all over the world step up to lock toes and try to pin their opponent’s foot to the wall of the so-called ‘toedium’. The taking of stimulants is strictly forbidden, as are warts or a foot infection.</p>

<p>In a similar vein, the World Shin-kicking Championships is an annual event at the Cotswold Olimpick Games and can be traced back to 1612. Kick timing and accuracy are all-important for getting on the front foot in what can be an incredibly painful sport.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Whey to go</h3>



<p>For sheer craziness, or sheer stupidity, the annual Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire takes some beating. An adrenalin-pumping global attraction thought to have its roots in the 15th century, it sees contestants sprint, tumble and hurl themselves down a precipitous drop in pursuit of a hefty wheel of prized Double Gloucester. Needless to say, injuries are commonplace. Apart from bragging rights, the prize for the winner is getting to keep the cheese!</p>

<p>Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales dips into madness every August for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. This is where plucky entrants swim, usually by doggy paddling as traditional strokes are outlawed, through a water-filled trench cut into a peat bog. Mask, snorkel and flippers add a dash of flash to the murky proceedings.</p>

<p>Another British invention in wackiness that has captured the global imagination is Extreme Ironing. Achieving perfectly pressed garments in hazardous settings, such as under the sea, on mountaintops, or even while skydiving, is certainly for the deft of hand and daft of mind. Competitors are judged on the neatness of their garments and the creativity of their environment.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Side-spitting stunt</h3>



<p>Not to be outdone by their cousins across the Atlantic, North America hosts plenty of sporting insanity. Take the International Cherry Pit-Spitting Championships, held in Michigan, in which contestants from all around the world expectorate a cherry stone, with the farthest spat securing the trophy. Denture racks are rumoured to be on hand for those wishing to remove their teeth.</p>

<p>Another food-related niche event is the World Championship Chili Cook-off, held in California by the International Chili Society to determine which cook comes up with the perfect ‘bowl of red’. Later this month at Okanagan College in British Columbia comes the 40th annual Spaghetti Bridge Building Contest, in which entrants build a bridge from scratch, armed with store-bought spaghetti and a glue gun.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Heavy duty</h3>



<p>Surely Finland’s most eccentric offering is the Wife-carrying World Championships in which participants carry their wife, or their neighbour’s wife, or a female collaborator borrowed from elsewhere, over a formidable obstacle course laden with pits (both dry and wet) and hurdles. Apparently inspired by the legendary antics of a 19th-century wife-stealing cad, the race requires expert coordination and balance – though the main goal is to have fun and not actually run off with anyone’s partner!</p>

<p>The winning pair receives the wife’s weight in beer – with bonus points and prizes awarded for couples who entertain the crowd, perhaps by carrying the woman upside down, wear splendid costumes, or demonstrate great strength.</p>

<p>The Marathon du Médoc, held annually amid the beautiful French vineyards of Bordeaux, is more an exercise in indulgence than a sporting contest. Forget water stops and energy drinks, here lavishly attired runners are refuelled with vintage wines and gourmet food, and enjoy the music of full orchestras scattered around the course. Fancy a rest after all that excess? Why not try the National Siesta Championships in Spain, held every year to see who is the best napper!</p>

<p>An intoxicating combination of brain and brawn, Chess Boxing is far more energetic. This fascinating melding into one activity of two seemingly diametrically opposed pastimes – boxing and chess – was founded by a Dutch performance artist. The unusual sport is now popular in many parts of the world, where it challenges enthusiasts to think strategically and keep fit at the same time.</p>

<p>Last held in December in Tunisia, the World Morse Code Championships are an example of how quirky competitions can bring people together. It’s a hugely competitive tournament in which contestants receive, copy and send coded transmissions as fast as possible, yet organiser Ashraf Chaabane, who proudly brought more than 100 high-speed telegraphists to the north African nation, commented that the friendships forged were just as important as the messages deciphered.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ugly Birdlings</h3>



<p>In most situations, ugliness is not something to brag about, or invoke the admiration of your peers. However, Leisa Elliott, who lives in Birdlings Flat, near Christchurch, New Zealand, achieved both of these last month when she won the second annual World’s Ugliest Lawn competition.</p>

<p>Elliott prefers to leave the garden to its own devices, so despite the presence of a local well, it is Mother Nature who waters the grass. Harsh coastal winds and a dry spell turned her lawn into a sun-scorched eyesore surrounded by verdant cacti. Though this barren patch of land is transformed into an oasis for bellbirds, fantails, finches, blackbirds and starlings when the heavens open, the Kiwi was proud to have triumphed in a global competition that promotes the spirit of sustainability and environmental awareness. The contest was created by the residents of Gotland in Sweden following a garden irrigation ban in 2022.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tongue in cheek</h3>



<p>Creating the ugliest or funniest face is the ultimate aim of the World Gurning Championships, one of the main draws at the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria, northern England. For those unfamiliar with the expression, gurning is the knack of pulling grotesque faces, and reportedly it has been celebrated at this market town since the annual fair began 1267. Today the Egremont spectacle attracts visitors from around the world eager to ogle at contestants contorting their faces into the ugliest or silliest look possible. Traditionally, these outlandish visages are framed by a horse collar.</p>

<p>The Naki Sumo Crying Baby Festival is peculiarly unique, distinctly Japanese and designed to ward off evil spirits. Held in an open-air ring at Shinto shrines around the country, two sumo wrestlers face off with a baby in their arms with the infant who bawls first declared the winner. If they start crying simultaneously, the one with the loudest or longest shriek is considered blessed.</p>

<p>“I love dressing up and hosting parties,” beams the grande dame of Hong Kong hospitality. “After the pandemic, it seemed like everyone was in loungewear. So, when that was over, I took it as a chance to dress up again. Maybe no more heels for me; I’m keeping the sneakers from the loungewear, but even if I’m in sneakers, I make sure they’re shining and shimmering, like the ones I’m wearing right now.”</p>

<p>Bullivant’s enthusiasm for life is infectious, and her reminiscences of the city’s glamorous party era spotlight her wealth of professional experience and her irrepressible vibrant spirit. “It’s not called disco anymore, is it? It’s called club,” she corrects herself, a playful smile dancing on her lips. Her love of the bright lights is evident not just in her words but in her very essence.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">First Dance</h3>



<p>Young Marina’s early life in Kolkata, India, was a departure from the glamour she would eventually embody. She was shielded from the allure of nights on the town, though “we did have fun house parties with friends and family where everyone just loved to dance,” she remembers fondly. “Music and dancing were integral to my upbringing.”</p>

<p>It wasn’t until the age of 19, during lavish supper-club dances at the Oberoi Grand, that she discovered her passion for nightlife. The elegant atmosphere, with men in tuxedos and women in long gowns, swept her away from her strict convent schooling.</p>

<p>“Oh yes, that was a definite trigger, although I only got involved in the nightlife industry in 2002,” she says, reflecting upon a branding and marketing communications career that transitioned from the Hyatt hotels to Kee Club, the JIA Group restaurants and countless fabulous events, including a short stint for Dragon-i group&#8217;s Gilbert Yeung who she firmly attributes to putting Hong Kong on the international club-scene map.</p>

<p>Her party-promotion talents were ignited during her time as director of marketing communications at Hyatt International. “We held a party at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong during the 1990 Pacific Area Travel Conference, and rather than the usual cocktail party, we decided to transform our ballroom into a multi-tiered nightclub and invited the local social crowd,” she relates. The event was a massive hit, proving how vital it is to create a perfect party vibe with the right music, lighting and an eclectic guest list. “That formula hasn’t changed for me even to this day,” she chuckles.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Iconic Nights and Knights</h3>



<p>In her eyes, Hong Kong’s nightlife is both intimate and unique. “It’s a smaller village than it appears, which brings charm. You know people, and it’s always fun running into friends,” she explains. Yet, she notes the shift in the scene over the years. “Hong Kong is not as international as it was a decade ago; fewer bizarre international characters come through,” she laments, while viewing the change as an opportunity to foster a more community-oriented nightlife.</p>

<p>“The Aubrey After Dark experience [at the Mandarin Oriental, which she co-devised with Andrew Bull] attracts an international clientele, creating a sense of unity among party-goers from around the world,” she adds, emphasising that the party crowd is the same everywhere. As someone who has hosted countless high-profile events, Bullivant understands what makes a gathering extraordinary. “For me, it’s a focused theme, great music and an interesting guest list,” she shares. “Oh, and don’t forget a tequila bar! That’s always a sure way to break the ice.”</p>

<p>Recalling memorable encounters over the years with celebrity guests like Bill Clinton and David Bowie, she highlights the importance of genuine conversations rather than small talk. “It’s about being authentically present in the moment,” she remarks.</p>

<p>But she is quick to point out that The Aubrey After Dark is not really in competition with other nightlife venues. In fact, they work closely with friends at clubs like Dragon-i and Cassio and often refer guests to each other. “Nightlife is a community and we like to think that we help to get people to stay out after dinner and stay energized to go on to other clubs later,” she explains.</p>

<p>At the heart of The Aubrey After Dark is an eclectic combination of local and international talents, drawn together by the team&#8217;s acute sense of curation. “My partner, Andrew Bull, aka DJ El Toro, and Cosmo Webber, our music curator, play pivotal roles in putting together a music programme that resonates with our audience,” she explains.</p>

<p>Ferried by a carefully curated guest list, these elements all blend to create an inviting atmosphere unmatched in the city. For Bullivant, the core of any remarkable event lies in the connections made. “It’s crucial to appreciate your guests’ presence at an event; they play a significant role in making our gatherings enjoyable,” she advises. She takes her guest list personally, ensuring a balanced mix of personalities and ages, allowing for both old friends and fresh introductions. “If you’re with people you enjoy, you can have a good time anywhere,” she affirms.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Toast to the Good Life</h3>



<p>The hospitality veteran’s definition of success mirrors that of her events – the enjoyment and energy created are paramount, both personally and professionally. “Success is about achieving desired goals; in events, it’s about creating memorable experiences. And happiness? It’s finding joy in what you do and how you connect with others,” she articulates. Balancing her bustling social life, she spends quiet days enjoying solo hikes and recently, a newfound fascination with stargazing.</p>

<p>As Bullivant looks to the future, especially after the loss of her gorgeous husband, Glenn Root, she recognises the importance of gratitude. “I’ve learned to cherish the many wonderful things in my life,” she says softly. “I am incredibly thankful for the vibrant years we spent together.” In this new chapter, her love for parties remains, albeit reframed within a context of gratitude and remembrance.</p>

The exterior is clad in weathered wood, with large windows and sliding glass doors that allow the beauty of the outdoors to flood in.</p>

Balancing the dark and bright shades, an immaculate white carpet complements the sofa, while a round golden coffee table adds to the regal mood of the living space.</p>

<p>Seating on the other side of the room is centred around a rectangular glass-clad coffee table, but the focal point is a magnificent modern fireplace, where the family can gather in the winter for warmth and comfort. Two adjacent plush sofas rest on a richly patterned red Turkish carpet. Large glass windows, which open onto a patio, allow in abundant light and offer views of the green outdoors.</p>

<p>Steeped in pagan tradition, Brazil hosts many carnivals leading up to Ash Wednesday (5 March 2025) and the start of Lent, but the celebration in Rio is by far the best known and most lavish. The city teems with visitors from around the globe keen to plunge headlong into the mayhem. Streets are jammed with revellers, fuelled by Brazilian beer and caipirinhas, and dancing and swaying to samba songs from morning to night. Many will be dressed as clowns and television personalities, or barely dressed in skimpy bikinis and feathers; cross-dressing is also common.</p>

<p>The chance to win prizes also drives participants at the main samba school parades held on the Sunday and Monday nights. Giant mechanised carnival floats illustrating the motifs of the school, sequinned-and-spangled dancers and huge percussion sections sashay around the Sambodrome arena to be judged by an officially appointed jury.</p>

<p>Each parade is a visual extravaganza based around a distinctive central theme that will determine its imagery, costumes and choice of music. An Amazonian theme, for instance, may have elaborately costumed parade members appearing as rain-forest animals. The troupe is generally led by a porta bandeira, a female dancer who holds the school flag, and the mestre sala (dance master), with the bateria (drummers) charged with keeping a constant samba rhythm. Parades also feature agile lead dancers known as passistas who perform dazzling routines.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Beach life</h3>



<p>Rio’s mile-upon-mile of gorgeous beaches is another top draw, with the most famous being the iconic crescent-shaped Copacabana. For many cariocas, the beach has become a way of life, and over the years a whole string of sunbathing sanctuaries along the shores has been developed. Aside from Copacabana, upscale sun- and water-worshippers will flock to Ipanema and Leblon. Offering far more seclusion to the southwest of the city are the white sands of Prainha Beach and Barra da Tijuca, a long, vibrant seaside playground.</p>

<p>Each of Rio’s beaches has its own style – there are sandy getaways for singles, families and sporty types, as well as those simply seeking a quiet spot in the sun. But it is Copacabana, where the beach culture began, which remains the centre of attraction. Once a quiet fishing village, the tourist district is now home to more than 350,000 people packed into 109 streets with a large concentration of hotels, restaurants and promenade cafés. The Rolling Stones famously gave a free concert on the beach here in 2006 to an audience of devoted fans estimated to number as many as two million.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Seaside stars</h3>



<p>A great place to have a cocktail by the pool and an Italian meal with a Brazilian vibe is Cipriani Restaurant in the Copacabana Palace. The legendary hotel was established in the 1920s and refurbished much more recently in a bid to return the establishment to its glory days. Many international celebrities have enjoyed black-tie evenings at this famous watering hole.</p>

<p>Framed by the towering Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) Mountains, Ipanema is an affluent neighbourhood with a stunning beach, fabulous restaurants and trendy boutiques. With a fringe of palm trees adding intimacy, the black-and-white mosaic promenade is the place for the young and beautiful to strut their stuff. Here, and in adjoining Leblon, you will find outstanding shops selling high-end luxury goods, including leather bags, shoes, clothing and gifts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sugar and spice</h3>



<p>Situated on a peninsula jutting into Guanabara Bay is Sugarloaf Mountain, which offers amazing views of Copacabana and much of Rio. A magnificent ride up to the towering summit in bubble-shaped cable cars offering 360-degree views completes the trip – an exhilarating experience captured in thrilling spy-drama style by the 1979 James Bond film Moonraker.</p>

<p>Another must-visit spectacle on high is the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) atop the hulking Corcovado mountain. This 98-foot-high Art Deco statue was sculpted in 1931 by French-Polish artist Paul Landowski and his team; it is visible for miles and watches over the whole city. An incredibly scenic route to Christ’s feet cuts through tropical foliage and affords mesmerising views across Rio and its glorious beaches.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Historic heart</h3>



<p>The historic heart of Rio is located around Praça XV de Novembro, a bustling square surrounded by historic buildings and streets. The Paço Imperial, dating from 1743 and once the palatial home of Brazil’s governors, has been transformed into a cultural centre boasting a theatre, cinema, exhibition spaces and galleries, a library and restaurants. The neighbouring Tiradentes Palace, seat of the Rio de Janeiro state parliament, showcases impressive Belle Epoque-style architecture. The 10-minute stroll from Praça XV up to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária, an impressive church originating from 1775 with ornate Italian marble interiors, passes along what is considered the cultural corridor of Rio.</p>

<p>Just off the square through the Arco do Teles, a heritage-listed colonial arch, is a maze of narrow pedestrianised streets flanked by mid-18th-century buildings and shops with high ceilings. Travessa do Comercio is lined with bars and restaurants, while the adjacent Rua do Ouvidor also hosts fine eateries, including Al Khayam, a Middle Eastern restaurant in a historic townhouse with a wide menu – kousa mahshi (zucchini stuffed with rice and meat) is a highlight. The enjoyment of the occasion is sometimes enhanced with a belly-dancing show.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Nightly feasts</h3>



<p>The broad choice of restaurants in Rio reflects the city’s multicultural charms. Many hotel restaurants serve the Brazilian national dish of feijoada, a stew of black beans and pork. Churrascarias, which specialise in steak and other grilled meats, are popular, especially those where servers bring a seemingly never-ending supply of juicy rodizio-style skewered meat to the table, ready to slice on demand.</p>

<p>Rio is also dotted with small neighbourhood bars-cum-eateries called botecos – Garota de Ipanema (named after the famous song) is one to savour. Chopp, a fresh and frosty Brazilian draught beer, and caipirinha cocktails of cachaça (spirit distilled from sugarcane), lime and sugar, are popular pours. A walking tour of the densely populated favelas (shantytowns) is bound to be an eye-opener, especially after a late night in a boteco or partying all night with the Carnival crowds.</p>
