<p>Martin Liu arrives at his Wong Chuk Hang office, where golf bags are stacked neatly and shelves lined with an array of familiar paraphernalia: clubs that look professionally polished, mini training tools that belong in a budding golf star’s dream, and equipment that seems to hum with possibility.</p>

<p>The founder of Chip Chip Golf Academy appears a little under the weather today – as evidenced by his husky voice – but the passion in his eyes moves faster than his throat. He leans forward and, with the patient warmth of someone who has taught countless eager juniors, begins sharing the joys of golf and how the sport shaped his perspective from a very early age.</p>

<p>“I started playing and learning about golf when I was only two years old,” he says. “Do you play?” he inquires of our team. When the majority of the crew admit they don’t play often enough, he doesn’t tease for long. Instead, he challenges us the way only a golf mentor would, by igniting ambition through friendly one-upmanship.</p>

<p>“There’s no age limit or starting point in life and in sport. Perhaps you can enrol your son when he turns one,” he says, laughing lightly, like the idea was obvious, like his sport was built for beginnings, not gatekeeping.</p>

<p>And in that moment, it becomes clear: Liu’s energy doesn’t need a fully rested voice to resonate. It comes from deeper places: research, resilience, people development, storytelling, and a business mindset sharpened through years of growth strategy.</p>

<p>Golf for Liu wasn’t introduced with a club brochure. It was handed down through proximity: being around professionals, learning by absorption, and feeling the culture of the sport early enough to make it personal.</p>

<p>“My father [Daniel Liu] was a former professional golfer,” he shares. “Looking back, I realise golf gave me much more than a sport. It taught me discipline, resilience, and how to stay composed under pressure at a very young age. As I sometimes say, ‘Golf raises you before it rewards you.’”</p>

<p>Even as a child, Liu was doing something many adults struggle to do: reflecting. Not just dreaming, but choosing. He explains: “Being immersed in that environment gave me an early understanding of both the beauty and the demands of the game. It was certainly an advantage to learn within that world, but it also prompted me to reflect early on about what kind of path I wanted to create for myself, both within and beyond golf.”</p>

<p>In Hong Kong, golf can feel like a well-kept secret; popular, respected, yet still not equally accessible. Young Liu found a way through it by moving with his family and learning through sacrifice.</p>

<p>“My parents operated a golf merchandise and consulting business across the border in China,&nbsp; working closely with clubs and training facilities, so we spent most weekends and school holidays travelling there for training. Those journeys taught me adaptability and commitment at an early age, while also giving me invaluable exposure to competitive golf beyond Hong Kong.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Green Approach</h3>



<p>Liu’s career is a route built from experiments. He studied business at The George Washington University in the US capital – where he captained the golf team – and over the span of a decade teed off as a financial analyst, swung into business management for film and video production companies, and ventured onto the greens of venture capital. He founded Chip Chip Golf three years ago. On paper, his CV might look scattered; in practice, it sounds like a continuous education.</p>

<p>“Despite the contrast of working for a multinational corporation with 300,000 employees to a four-person media production start-up, the one consistent lesson across every industry was the importance of creating tangible value,” he states.</p>

<p>His pivot away from corporate life was instinctive once he realised what kind of environment he truly thrived in. “I found myself reconnecting with golf through my involvement with the Golf Association of Hong Kong, China, particularly through the Junior and International Development Committee, which plays a key role in shaping the city’s next generation of athletes, and later as captain of the Hong Kong men’s national golf team.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fun First, Skills Second</h3>



<p>When people imagine golf academies, they might expect performance metrics and pressure-driven progression. Liu built the Chip Chip Golf programme, which teaches juniors aged two to 14, with a different ordering of priorities. “Our philosophy is simple: fun comes first, skills come second,” he explains. “Too often, youth sport becomes overly focused on performance too early. We believe children first need to enjoy the process. Children do not stay in sport because they are talented; they stay because they fall in love with it.”</p>

<p>His ethos echoes the sport itself: you miss, you recover, you return. That principle becomes a life lesson. “While we place great emphasis on developing strong technical fundamentals, we believe the golfer’s mindset is equally important, perhaps even more so in the long run.”</p>

<p>It’s an environment in which juniors learn how to cope with disappointment. “We teach our students that setbacks are not something to fear or avoid, but something to navigate with confidence and perspective. Life, much like golf, rarely unfolds perfectly. The ability to remain calm, adapt positively and recover gracefully is a skill that extends far beyond the fairway.”</p>

<p>Liu’s aim is to make the sport more welcoming and inclusive for families who may never have previously considered golf. “One of the most common misconceptions is that golf is an exclusive sport reserved only for the wealthy or those with access to private-club memberships. The sport itself is far more approachable than many people realise,” he says.</p>

<p>“We guide children from their very first swing all the way through to playing on-course and competing in tournaments, all within an environment centred around learning, friendship and enjoyment.”</p>

<p>His experience as Hong Kong team captain gave him a macro view: what’s improving, what still needs system-level strengthening, and where belief must be rebuilt. “We now have players winning at the highest levels internationally, and golf has earned Tier A elite-sport status at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Golf teaches accountability fast, because there’s nobody else to blame. That’s why character development isn’t optional; it’s built into the sport.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Game for Life</h3>



<p>Liu’s ultimate goal is to cultivate lifelong relationships with the sport, so children feel empowered long after the lesson ends. “Ultimately, I hope every child who comes through our programme develops a positive and lasting relationship with golf,” he says. “If we helped cultivate genuine passion, confidence and enjoyment through the experience, I would consider that a success.”</p>

<p>Although Liu feels below par today, this is a man who keeps showing up. As we conclude our chat and move on to the photo shoot, he offers our crew some energy drinks. “I think I might need these the most,” he quips. <p>In the world of fine watching, value is not dictated by retail price tags or boutique waiting lists. It is forged in the secondary market – under the bright auction-house lights of Geneva, New York, Paris and Hong Kong – where history, scarcity and craftsmanship are tested in real time. When a timepiece crosses the US$1 million threshold at auction, it is not about extravagance, rather, it&#8217;s a recognition that it has transcended fashion and entered the realm of enduring cultural significance. Here we spotlight nine rare references that have achieved such reverence.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Patek Philippe Reference 1518</h3>



<p>When a first-series example of a pink gold Ref.1518 sold for US$3.9 million (HK$30.6 million) at Sotheby’s in 2023, it reaffirmed the model’s status as one of the most important wristwatches ever created. Introduced by Patek Phillipe in 1941, the 1518 was the first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph. Only 281 pieces were made, across all metals, with just 58 in rose gold, and fewer still with a matching pink dial. Its significance lies not just in rarity but in mechanical ambition. In the early 1940s, combining a chronograph with a perpetual calendar represented a technical breakthrough. The 1518 marks the moment complicated wristwatches entered the modern era.</p>

<p>Produced from 1950 to 1985 in just shy of 350 examples, Ref. 2499 refined the perpetual calendar chronograph formula with a larger case and stronger visual balance. The movement’s architecture and finishing represent mid-century Swiss mastery. The Patek Philippe 2499 is often described as the archetype of complicated watch design – a timepiece that captures heritage and technical excellence in equal measure. A unique first-series model signed by both its maker and the retailer, Asprey, changed hands for US$3.9 million at Sotheby’s in 2018.</p>

<p>A world-time wristwatch with a cloisonné enamel dial, Ref. 2523, has set auction records due to its exceptional scarcity and artistry. Fewer than 30 examples are believed to exist, and its rotating city disc and hand-finished enamel map dial demonstrate that rarity combined with decorative craftsmanship can propel a watch into the highest echelon of collecting. A particularly rare 2017 Patek Philippe World Time Minute Repeater etched with the Manhattan skyline sold for US$2.2 million (HK$17.2 million) at Sotheby’s New York in 2021.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rolex Reference 6062 ‘Bao Dai’</h3>



<p>While Rolex is more commonly associated with sports models, Ref. 6062 is one of its rare complicated pieces. An iteration once owned by Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam, and distinguished by a black dial and diamond hour markers, fetched a record-breaking US$5 million (HK$39.2 million) at a Phillips sale in Geneva in 2017. Produced in very small numbers in the early 1950s, the 6062 features a triple calendar and moonphase. It proves that even within Rolex’s robust production history, extraordinary exceptions exist.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona Reference 6263 ‘Albino’&nbsp;</h3>



<p>An extremely rare ‘Albino’ Daytona sold for US$1.4 million (HK$11 million) at Phillips Geneva in 2015, driven by both its monochromatic silver-dial configuration and its celebrity provenance – it had once belonged to rock guitarist Eric Clapton. The Daytona’s chronograph function is mechanically straightforward compared to grand complications, yet its cultural and design impact is enormous. Only a handful of the Albino variant versions are known to exist, illustrating how subtle dial differences can dramatically elevate value.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Reference 5402</h3>



<p>Early Royal Oak models, particularly first-generation, a Series examples from the 1970s, invariably perform well at auction. Designed by Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak introduced the radical idea that stainless steel could be luxurious. Its ultra-thin automatic movement and integrated bracelet changed industry norms. Bearing an exclusive 18-carat yellow-gold bezel, Genta’s personal Audemars Piguet Royal Oak became the most expensive vintage AP watch sold at auction when it scored US$2.1 million (HK$16.5 million) at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2022.</p>

<p>Sales of early Tourbillon Souverain watches from F.P. Journe reflect the growing reverence for independent watchmaking. Produced in extremely limited quantities during the brand’s early years, the model features a tourbillon paired with a precision-enhancing remontoire d’égalité and embodies modern artisanal horology at its most thoughtful. François Paul Journe’s direct involvement in early production adds to their collectability – crafted as part of a 20-strong subscription series to fund the brand launch, a 1999 Tourbillon Souverain Souscription in platinum with a yellow-gold dial and rhodium-plated brass movement secured HK$15.9 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2021.</p>

<p>Refinement can rival complication when it comes to value. Fewer than 200 examples of the Simplicity were made by Philippe Dufour, each finished largely by hand. The movement’s bevelling, chamfering and mirror polishing are widely regarded as among the finest in contemporary watchmaking. The first Simplicity in a series issued in 2020 to mark the model’s 20th anniversary was sold by Phillips for US$1.5 million (HK$11.8 million).</p>

Produced in small numbers, the Crash is a design-led rarity defying traditional watch geometry with its asymmetrical, melted form. Mechanically simple but visually radical, it represents Cartier’s bold creative heritage. In a market often dominated by mechanical complexity, the Crash proves that artistic identity can be equally powerful.</p>

<p>Shanghai has a way of making you feel like you’re walking through the future – even the pavements seem to be buffering at 4K. Then you get to the West Bund Dome, and suddenly the future puts on a tuxedo in a testament to the accurate passage of time.</p>

<p>Rolex’s <em>Oyster Story</em>, which made its international debut at the venue last month, was more than just a landmark exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of a revolutionary wristwatch. It was a very impressive, very immersive reminder that ‘waterproof’ used to be a humble promise, and then someone decided to take it personally, in a way that said: “We’re rewriting the laws of physics”.</p>

<p>At the opening spectacle on 9 June, soprano Sonya Yoncheva’s voice didn’t so much fill the space as <em>calibrate</em> it. She sang the timeless Édith Piaf anthem <em>Hymne à l’amour,</em> and for a second, you remember that humans invented romance for the same reason they invented watches: because time is always slipping away and we’re always trying to hold it, either in our hands or in our hearts.</p>

And here’s where the exhibition gets real: the Oyster isn’t being celebrated like a collectible object. It’s being framed like a turning point. Like a chapter of time ‘before this’ and ‘after that’.</p>

<p>The Oyster exists because Wilsdorf believed a wristwatch could do more than look good on a wrist – it should unite precision and reliability in all conditions. The original Oyster case, launched in 1926, was a horological breakthrough: screwed down, hermetically sealed, waterproof and dustproof in a way that wasn’t just marketing. It was a challenge.</p>

<p>That’s the part that hits you hardest, because watches today are everywhere. Everyone’s got one, even if they pretend they don’t care about it. But this exhibition makes you feel the difference between ‘It’s a watch’ and ‘It was built to survive’. It showcases the divide between style and survival, between decoration and evidence. Some exhibitions celebrate anniversaries with balloons and speeches. This show does it like history as a full-body experience.</p>

<p>The<em> Oyster Story</em> runs as a sequence of spaces, each one pulling you deeper into the theme that the Oyster didn’t just change Rolex; it changed what a watch was allowed to be. Not just pretty, not just accurate on a desk, but accurate when the world is messy.</p>

<p>In the main pavilion at the West Bund Dome, visitors were surrounded by iconic models and contemporary creations – rare timepieces, real components, and the feeling of touching the future with your eyes. Cleverest of all was the way they were displayed: rather than appearing like museum trophies, they were presented as chapters.</p>

<p>There was also an emphasis on authenticity. Privately owned watches kindly loaned for the event were displayed alongside rare and iconic pieces and components in a reminder that the Oyster didn’t arrive through magic – it arrived through obsession. Every watch is an ecosystem of tiny decisions: case, bezel, crown, movement, every part working like a team that refuses to lose. The exhibition doesn’t want you to just look at the Oyster; it wants you to understand it.</p>

<p>The first floor was home to an exclusive display of 100 portraits of legendary Rolex watch wearers. And yes, portraits are portraits, but viewing them prompted a more profound realisation. The Oyster’s real story is the people who tested it, then kept going. The sailors, the adventurers, the pioneers – people who didn’t just want a watch, but a tool that could keep up with their ambitions.</p>

<p>Once inside the ‘Superlative’ pavilion, it was like the show changed dialect. If the first rooms were about story, this one was about craft. The exhibition breaks down the watchmaking process – from materials and movements to dials, bezels, cases and bracelets – into the kind of detail you only encounter when someone’s explaining a hobby they’ve been doing since the dinosaurs.</p>

<p>Education about the brand’s enhanced Superlative Chronometer certification – expanded this year to embrace additional testing criteria – wasn’t presented as a dry checklist to tick off. It was presented as a philosophy. A reminder that the Rolex manufacture is built upon seven pillars of excellence: precision, waterproofness, self-winding, autonomy, resistance to magnetism, reliability and durability. For the Oyster and the brand, performance is the only love language that counts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Around the Clock</h3>



<p>At the heart of the pavilion is an immersive experience dedicated to Rolex’s proprietary optical atomic clock, an ultra-precise reference instrument using laser-stimulated rubidium atoms to define the second with extraordinary accuracy. And it got me thinking – a watch is still small, but the ambition is enormous.</p>

<p>It’s one of those moments when you realise Rolex isn’t just celebrating the past. It’s highlighting what’s possible next and doing it with technology that makes normal time feel like there is always more.</p>

<p>A cinema space with a film retracing the Oyster’s history continuously was an invitation to walk through a legend at your own pace. The Library Lounge allowed a shift from spectacle to substance. Publications about watchmaking, sports, arts and preservation served as reminders that time isn’t only about minutes and seconds. Time is also about culture, about what humans value enough to preserve. At every turn, the exhibition pulls the thread from engineering into humanity.</p>

<p>Countless large screens formed a cyclical, colour-themed gallery, depicting watches and components; Rolex’s stellar line-up of Testimonees; iconic wearers; and images of sport, culture and nature. This circular structure never fully lets you settle. It keeps nudging you back to the idea that innovation isn’t a straight line; it’s a loop, and one that keeps getting faster.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Milestone Mentality</h3>



<p>Oyster Story leans into the idea that Hans Wilsdorf believed excellence isn’t a slogan – it’s what happens when your product survives real conditions. And this ethos is embodied in milestones. The spirit of waterproof reliability began in 1926, with the rise of a watch named for its ability to remain submerged underwater while protecting the delicate mechanism inside.</p>

<p>It was immortalised the following year when Mercedes Gleitze – wearing an Oyster – became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. The Perpetual (Rotor) part of the name arrived in 1931 – Rolex’s patented automatic, self-winding mechanism powered by the natural movement of the wrist.</p>

<p>And so the story continues. Landmark follows landmark, each invention backed by decades of testing in demanding environments, with explorers and pioneers shaping what the watch becomes next. This exhibition makes it apparent that the Oyster is a passport to the world: not for travel, but for challenge.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Accurate to the Last</h3>



<p>The grand opening evening in Shanghai climaxed in fireworks along the banks of the Huangpu River. A drone light show and architectural projection mapping narrated the Oyster’s epic century: from the first watch in 1926 to legendary feats across sea and sky, from deep depths to mountain heights; history projected onto the city like the city itself is part of the mechanism. A radiant Rolex crown and a ‘100’ emblem suspended in the sky officially inaugurated the global debut of the exhibition.</p>

<p>At the end of <em>Oyster Story</em>, you realise the centenary isn’t only about what Rolex built in 1926, or what it refined in 1931, or how watchmaking improved decade by decade. It’s about the attitude behind the invention. Because in a world that’s always trying to rush you or distract you, the Oyster’s promise is almost stubborn: time will pass, but accuracy can fight back.</p>

<p>When temperatures rise and dishes on the menu turn lighter, few wines capture the spirit of summer quite like rosé. Demonstrating the elegance and polish that define French rosé, they are beautifully suited to warm afternoons and alfresco dinners.</p>

<p>A defining technical feature of Georgian jewellery is the closed-back setting. Gemstones were typically set over carefully applied foil to enhance their appearance under the warm, flickering fire and candlelight. The foil backing reflected light upward through the stone, increasing its depth and luminosity.</p>

<p>Creating these settings required extraordinary precision. The jeweller had to seal the stone carefully to protect the delicate foil, as exposure to moisture could cause deterioration over time. Surviving examples with intact foil are especially prized today.</p>

<p>Metalwork during the Georgian period was equally impressive. Goldsmiths employed techniques that demanded patience and refined control, particularly cannetille – the twisting and shaping of extremely fine gold wires into elaborate scrolls, coils and lace-like motifs. Each tiny element was formed and soldered individually. Airy yet intricate, delicate yet technically sophisticated – the result resembles filigree but often appears more dimensional and sculptural.</p>

<p>Diamonds were often set in silver to maximise their visual brightness, while gold formed the structural base touching the skin. This silver-over-gold construction became a hallmark of Georgian diamond jewelry. The choice of materials was not merely aesthetic but practical. Silver enhanced the stone’s whiteness, while gold prevented tarnish from staining clothing or skin.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Elegant Nature</h3>



<p>Georgian jewellery was closely associated with aristocratic society and courtly life, emphasising elegance rather than extravagance. Designs frequently drew inspiration from nature, with leaves, flowers and vines rendered in remarkably delicate detail. Floral sprays, bows, ribbons and garlands were popular decorative themes, reflecting Rococo elegance and later Neoclassical restraint. Serpents symbolising eternity, intricate bows suggesting unity, and miniature portrait jewels added layers of meaning without overwhelming the composition.</p>

<p>Many pieces were dismantled as styles changed. Gemstones were reset into newer mountings during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and precious metals were often melted down. Authentic examples in excellent condition, particularly those retaining original settings, command significant prices in the antique market.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Veering into Victorian</h3>



<p>In contrast, Victorian jewellery, which followed from 1837 to 1901 under Queen Victoria’s reign, reflects a period of social and technological transformation. Early Victorian pieces retained some Georgian influence in stone cuts and decorative motifs. However, the Industrial Revolution gradually introduced mechanised production techniques.</p>

<p>For an elevated perspective, the Langkawi SkyCab is a highlight of a visit to Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park in the northwest. Here, cable-car gondolas carry tourists high above the rainforest canopy to Gunung Mat Cincang. The ascent to this iconic peak – the island’s second tallest, at 850 metres – reveals uninterrupted views of jungle rolling toward the sea.</p>

<p>At the summit, the Sky Bridge awaits, a 125-metre cable-stayed walkway that winds across a ravine, suspended dramatically against the open sky. The scene feels cinematic yet entirely natural, a reminder of the island’s breathtaking scale. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Enchanting Isles</h3>



<p>Beyond the main island, surrounding islets offer further fascination. Boat excursions glide to hidden coves where water shifts between turquoise and emerald depending on the light. Langkawi’s second-largest island, Pulau Dayang Bunting, which lies to the south, is home to the fabled Lake of the Pregnant Maiden. Reclining – in the shape of a woman with child – among the steep limestone cliffs of Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park, the freshwater surface mirrors sky and stone in perfect symmetry.
