<p>In the lobby of The Hari Hong Kong hotel, nestled in Wan Chai, Hersha Harilela Chellaram embodies the kind of warm-heartedness and approachability that would make anyone feel at home. “Please help me with these poses; I am not used to this,” quips the yoga therapist self-deprecatingly as we begin our cover shoot, laughing as if sharing an inside joke with the universe.</p>

<p>As the CEO of YAMA Foundation, she believes in the power of yoga to transform lives. “I started doing yoga because I believe it’s for everybody. No specific body types are required,” she says, her eyes sparkling with passion for her craft. She aims to dismantle barriers in an industry often criticised for promoting exclusivity.</p>

<p>This scion of Hong Kong’s renowned Harilela family balances her prominent background with a refreshing sense of humility. The pressure of privilege hasn’t altered her charmingly down-to-earth nature; instead, it has amplified her commitment to meaningful non-profit work, proving that true success is not measured by wealth, but by impact.</p>

<p>Amid the merriment of our photo session, Harilela Chellaram stresses that there’s no shame in wearing a loose top and stretchy trousers; for her, comfort is key. “Shake what your mama gave you,” she chuckles, a mantra she champions both on and off the yoga mat.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Breath of Life</h3>



<p>Reflecting on her childhood, she shares poignant memories that served as the foundations for her career. Yoga was not merely a form of exercise but a bond of togetherness. “I have very key memories as a young child of being with my father when he practised yoga,” she recalls. Her father, Michael Harilela, would sit in full lotus, exuding serenity while his daughter playfully attempted to mimic his poses.</p>

<p>This familial appreciation for yoga was complemented by her mother, Kamilla, a karma yoga devotee, who introduced Hersha to community service and the essence of selfless giving. “I remember my birthday parties being spent serving food to the needy rather than receiving gifts,” she shares, recounting moments that shaped her vision for inclusivity. The seeds of compassion were sown early, establishing a lifelong connection to yoga’s core principles of acceptance, grace and giving back.</p>

<p>From the very beginning of her journey as a yoga teacher, Harilela Chellaram recognised the importance of adaptability. After obtaining her yoga teacher certification in 2002, she found herself in New York City, eager to teach. One particular encounter sparked a transformative epiphany: “A woman walked in with a prosthetic leg. I was terrified and told her I wasn’t sure I could accommodate her needs. She confidently replied, ‘I know how to accommodate myself. Just watch and learn.’”</p>

<p>This moment crystallised the Hong Kong wellness pioneer’s realisation that yoga is about meeting individuals where they are. “It’s about putting a pose into the body that you have. Yoga should be accessible to everyone,” she asserts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Challenging the Narrative</h3>



<p>Returning home, she faced complications implementing this philosophy, especially in Hong Kong’s rigid societal framework where differences are often stifled. “I’ve taught everyone from infants with special needs to octogenarians recovering from strokes; each student brought unique challenges,” she says. Her mission is not just to impart yoga poses but also to nourish the body and soul through empathy and understanding. “People often equate children being noisy with bad behaviour, but that’s not always true,” she notes.</p>

<p>Her commitment to accessibility extends beyond the mat as she strives to create welcoming spaces irrespective of physical limitations. It is her ongoing aim to transform the perception of yoga as an elitist practice into a universally embraced philosophy.</p>

<p>To change this perception, she stresses the importance of diversifying the representation of yoga within the media. “We need to showcase different body types and challenge the narrative that yoga is only for the already flexible or fit,” she asserts. By showcasing real people of all shapes and abilities, the narrative can shift towards an all-encompassing message: yoga is for everyone.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Celebrating Individuality</h3>



<p>In a world that often pressures individuals to conform, Harilela Chellaram advocates self-expression and individuality. “There’s no right or wrong way to practise yoga,” she emphasises, championing the beauty of imperfection. “Each person’s journey is unique, and we must embrace that.”</p>

<p>This ethos ripples through her work with the YAMA Foundation, which inspires countless individuals – especially those from marginalised backgrounds – to embrace their own journeys. Each day, she strives to cultivate a space where all bodies can feel comfortable, uplifted and accepted.</p>

<p>Founded in 2016 by Harilela and her husband, Shaman Chellaram, the foundation has blossomed, providing yoga, art and meditation to some of Hong Kong’s most vulnerable communities. “Our mission – making Yoga, Art and Meditation Accessible – has evolved over the years,” she shares enthusiastically. It has empowered those with disabilities, living in poverty and other underrepresented populations, showcasing the profound impact these practices can have on emotional and mental wellbeing.</p>

<p>Recognition for the foundation’s work has come in the form of prestigious awards, including being named the 2020 Accessible Yoga Organisation of the Year. “It was an honour and a huge motivation,” she reflects. Her drive to serve continues to shine brightly, even amid challenges, urging her forward to create lasting change.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mindfulness in Motion</h3>



<p>Cultivating mindfulness is a cornerstone of her philosophy. “Breath connects us to ourselves,” says the influential educator, reflecting her own daily practice of meditation and yoga. She believes in the power of presence, connecting mind and body to foster emotional regulation. By effectively integrating breathwork into her teachings, she helps foster a sense of calm and connection without judgment or preconceived notions.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“Seeing children no longer having meltdowns during everyday outings due to breathing exercises is a testament to our work,” she adds, radiating excitement as she recounts the organisation’s growth. Through her dedication, the foundation has expanded to offer more than 100 classes a month, evidence of a thriving community embracing wellness.</p>

<p>She dreams of creating a dedicated wellness centre that prioritises accessibility, ensuring that everyone – from wheelchair users to caregivers – can partake in holistic practices. “We’re launching a purpose-built facility so the community can come together and feel welcomed,” she says, her eyes gleaming with hope.</p>

<p>As we contemplate the future, she shares her aspirations for the next five years – expanding YAMA and providing mentorship to aspiring yoga educators. “I want to empower the next generation to carry forward this mission of inclusivity,” she confides with enthusiasm.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Authenticity Over Achievement</h3>



<p>Asked about her definition of success, she pauses thoughtfully before uttering: “To be courageous and authentic in everything you do, both personally and professionally.” She highlights the importance of letting go of perfectionism and embracing the ordinary. “If you can roll with the punches, it sets you up for less stress and more happiness,” she explains.</p>

<p>Even as a prominent figure in the community, Harilela Chellaram remains grounded and relatable. “Although I like to think I am a modern, independent Indian woman in a big world, I still need my mom by my side,” she laughs, her smile broadening. As a mother of two herself, she is quick to credit her own mother as both her stylist and cheerleader, reminding us all of the importance of familial support in navigating life’s challenges.</p>

<p>When you think of extravagance and splendour, the Mughal Empire immediately springs to mind, its legacy twinkling in the gems that adorn its history. From luxuriously carved turban ornaments to richly coloured necklaces dripping with lush stones, Mughal jewellery paints a picture of opulent artistry and cultural richness that continues to resonate today.</p>

<p>The Mughals were not just rulers; they were connoisseurs of beauty. Shimmering across South Asia from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the Mughal court was marked by an unmatched passion for the opulence of jewels. Exquisite diamonds, vibrant emeralds, luscious rubies and exceptional pearls were their treasures. These royal gemstones were not merely decorative; they represented power, wealth and artistry – a glimmering narrative of the greatness of an empire that once spanned present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as India and beyond.</p>

<p>The Mughal treasury was legendary, rumoured to contain inestimable riches in  gold, silver and jewels that would make even the wealthiest modern magnate gawk in admiration. The opulence was tangible; just consider the Peacock Throne, the 17th-century solid-gold and gem-encrusted seat of power of the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. Deemed to be one of the wonders of the world, it symbolised absolute power and splendour.</p>

<p>The vastness of the Mughals’ wealth and the sheer artistry displayed in their treasures were the envy of all who came to pay their respects. In a practice as diplomatic as dazzling, intricate gem-studded jewels would be gifted to foreign dignitaries or presented as tokens of love in strategic alliances. Wealthy princesses were arrayed in priceless dowries to secure political ties, with exquisite pieces carefully chosen not just for beauty but also as measures of worth and influence.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Royal Bling</h3>



<p>Mughal jewellery is a story woven in gold and gemstones. Each piece tells a tale of luxury, craftsmanship and the complexity of status. The jewels were powerful symbols, often displayed by emperors to signify their authority. Turban ornaments, for instance, nodded to royal lineage. The sarpech or jigha, crafted in gold and studded with brilliant stones, displayed elegance and functionality. The design often included a majestic feather and was reminiscent of the emperor’s sceptre.</p>

<p>Among the crowning glories of the era was the famous Great Mogul Diamond. Discovered amid the rich Golconda mines of southern India in 1650, this magnificent stone weighed a staggering 280 carats. Resembling half a chicken’s egg in size and shape, it was gifted by a wealthy general, Emir Jemla, to Shah Jahan. Tales swirl around this famous diamond, especially that of French traveller Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who marvelled at its brilliance and sketched its image in 1665.</p>

<p>However, the diamond’s tale took a dramatic turn when it was looted by Persian ruler Nader Shah in 1739, along with the Peacock Throne, and disappeared into the pages of history. Some say it was later recut into the Orlov Diamond, a shard of Mughal majesty residing in the Russian imperial sceptre now displayed at the Kremlin.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ornate Armoury</h3>



<p>Not just about ornamentation, Mughal jewellery also served practical purposes. The bazuband, worn around the upper arm and adorned with gemstones, offered protection in battle while serving as an ornate declaration of wealth and prowess. Inherently functional yet intricately beautiful, items like dagger handles were crafted from precious metals, integrating luxury into everyday life. The Mughal armoury reflected not only martial readiness but also an appreciation for artistry that time has not forgotten.</p>

<p>Mughal jewellery often featured intricate designs inspired by nature, with symbols like the lotus – representing beauty and eternity – woven into their aesthetics. <p>The heritage is not only the product we do; the heritage is the way to do it, the spirit. It was the case of Pierre Jaquet-Droz from 1738, nearly 300 years ago; he was always finding a new approach.He was a disruptive person at that period of time, so we must continue in that vein. Respecting him is to continue to be disruptive.</p>

<p>We wanted to fully respect the past and the legacy. It is worth remembering &nbsp;that Pierre Jaquet-Droz was traveling to the courts of Europe, to the King of Spain, the King of Great Britain, the King of France, even to the Emperor in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China.</p>

<p>We decided, if we want to respect that, we should make a piece of art; it&#8217;s not watches anymore, they are pieces of art. And we should make a piece of art for the kings. But who are the kings today?</p>

<p>The ‘King’ today is the customer who can afford to buy a real piece of art with all the materials and know-how. &nbsp;We do then only pieces for kings, which means only, I must say, very expensive pieces.</p>

<p>Furthermore, as long as we make everything in-house, engraving, painting, why should we try to do the samepiece twice? I prefer the engraver, the painters, to do every time another painting, another engraving.</p>

<p>So, we concluded, we will only do unique pieces.</p>

<p>Customersfirst have to come to see the artist to know what they want to do. And then we have facilities inside a studio, like a TV professional studio with six 4K cameras.The customer does not have to come back to the manufacture every three weeks to see the evolution of the creation of his piece of art. He can talkand he can influence the artist &#8211; &nbsp;to engrave like this or do it like that.</p>

<p>This is a phygital approach we construct at the manufacture to increase personal contact as well as use modern technology to be able to follow the process.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why are you convinced luxury and sustainable development are not incompatible?</h3>



<p>They are not at all. I come from the hotel business and from the beginning I was convinced that it is a mission for the people who have a lot of money to show the right rules in the right ways. It is compatible with the sustainability approach.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Any other comments?</h3>



<p>I believe that you cannot construct and clarify the future without knowing where you come from. We are a startup which is nearly 300 years old. It&#8217;s unusual.</p>

[Feature Story] Jaquet Droz – Dazzling and Disruptive


<p>First making waves in the 1960s, stone dials have made something of a comeback. With their stunning faces crafted from semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, malachite, jade and tiger’s eye these statement timepieces are exceedingly appealing to collectors. They are often unique, carved from a single block of stone and showcasing its natural variations. Their minimalist designs and bright aesthetics are other hallmarks that catch the eye.</p>

<p>To mark its 25th anniversary, Gerald Charles harnessed the power of stone for the first time in the dial of the <em>Maestro 2.0 Ultra-Thin Lapis Lazuli</em>, featuring the deep-blue metaphoric rock that was a favourite of company founder Gérald Genta. Carving the dial is an intricate process involving at least 24 hours of painstaking craftsmanship per watch. No two dials are exactly alike; each is cut by hand from raw stone down to an ultimate thickness of just 0.55mm, then polished by hand and machine to give the natural stone its ultimate sheen. Any faces exhibiting imperfections or not the desired hue are weeded out.</p>

<p>Mirroring the angled, asymmetric silhouette of the Maestro case – inspired by baroque motifs – presents further challenges when cutting of the dial, as does accommodating the hands and applied hour markers and drilling out the aperture for the date window. The lighter colour tones of the markers, the stainless-steel case and the brand logo embellished on the dial provide a striking contrast to the rich blue hues of the stone dial, the blue Colormix-coated bezel and the matching strap. Snug inside this 3.7mm-thick timepiece is the brand’s ultra-thin Swiss manufacture 2.0 calibre.</p>

<p>Ulysse Nardin’s <em>Diver Atoll</em> sports stone-cut dial crafted from chrysocolla housed in an 80% recycled stainless steel polished and satin-finished case. Limited to 100 pieces, uniqueness is ensured by each stone dial’s distinct and mesmerising patterns, with imagery alluring to lagoons, coral reefs and ocean vibes. Beautiful blends of blue and turquoise dotted with whisps of brown and black project an earthy elegance. A unidirectional rotating bezel set with 40 diamonds and 11 diamond indexes on the watch face add to the aesthetic appeal. Joining the brand’s <em>Diver</em> collection, the 39mm timepiece offers water resistance down to 300 metres and is powered by the UN-816 self-winding movement.</p>

<p>Three versions of the Rolex <em>Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36</em> watch boast dials cut from decorative stone: one of green aventurine distinguished by a crystallised surface; another made out of carnelian with its distinctive orange hue and panoply of patterned lines; and lastly a shimmering turquoise face threaded with natural veining. All three are embellished with diamond-set hour markers and Roman numerals ringed by a diamond-studded bezel. Each features the brand’s signature President bracelet with semi-circular three-piece links and the Calibre 3255 movement that activates the instantaneous day and date in apertures at 12 and three o’clock, and simultaneously the hour, minute and seconds hands.</p>

<p>Few performers mirror the complexity of human experience with as much raw talent and charm as Jonathan Bailey. Celebrating his 37th birthday this month, the <em>Bridgerton</em> and <em>Fellow Travelers</em> star can credit an abundance of perseverance and passion for his successful move from child actor to major stage and screen presence. With accolades lining the walls of his career ¬– including a Laurence Olivier Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award, Bailey’s trajectory signifies more than just talent; it represents the evolution of an artist willing to transcend boundaries.</p>

<p>His childhood in the countryside of Oxfordshire, England, amid the nurturing gazes of four remarkable women – his mother and three elder sisters – and a father with unwavering resolve shaped Bailey’s outlook on life. His passion for acting ignited at the tender age of five when a family outing to London to see a production of <em>Oliver!</em> planted the seed of ambition in his young mind. “That was my awakening moment,” he recalls. “I was transfixed by the magic of storytelling and the ability to transport people into different worlds.”</p>

<p>His early years were marked by performances that honed his craft, starting with primary-school plays and continuing onto stage roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He starred as Gavroche in a West End production of <em>Les Misérables</em> at the age of eight. Enveloped in a cocoon of creativity and ambition, he headed to the bright lights of greater stages – a path he decided to embrace fully, forgoing drama school in favour of real-world experience.</p>

<p>“I’ve never gone in as the overdog, and that’s liberating,” he reflects. “I want my experiences to drive my performances. I think that’s what keeps me grounded.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diverse Roles and Dramatic Range</h3>



<p>Bailey’s ascent in the acting world gained momentum through a host of versatile portrayals. He broke into British television playing a university freshman in the comedy <em>Off the Hook</em> (2009) and a teenage Leonardo da Vinci in <em>Leonardo</em> (2012-12), but it was his role as the earnest journalist Olly Stevens in the critically acclaimed series <em>Broadchurch</em> (2013-15) that saw him capture hearts. While that show bolstered his reputation as a dynamic actor, it was the theatre that truly showcased the depth of his artistry.</p>

<p>Appearances in classic plays like <em>Othello</em> (2013) and contemporary works such as <em>The York Realist</em> (2018) served to solidify his status as a leading man of modern theatre. “The theatre is where I feel most secure,” he explains. “There’s a tangible energy from the audience that compels me. I thrive off their reactions.”</p>

<p>It was also in 2018 that Bailey took a significant leap, stepping into the gender-swapped role of Jamie in a new production of the 1970 Stephen Sondheim musical, <em>Company</em>. His award-winning performance dazzled critics, marking him as a swift and nimble presence on stage. “Performing <em>Getting Married Today</em> every night felt exhilarating – it was my playground,” he recalls.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Finding Freedom in Fame</h3>

<p>As he navigates the glamorous yet complicated world of stardom, Bailey remains firmly rooted in his passion for storytelling and finds safety once again in a return to the theatre. He plays the titular role in <em>Richard II</em>, which runs at London’s Bridge Theatre until 10 May. “The stage has this protective aura – it’s immersive and liberating,” he reflects. “You get to explore life through characters, almost like dress-rehearsing your own existence.”</p>

<p>His collaboration with director Nicholas Hytner marks a significant homecoming for the actor, and one that has been a foundational part of his career. “Nicholas gave me my biggest break as Cassio in <em>Othello</em>. His mentorship has shaped me significantly. I feel like I’m coming back to a safe space where I can grow and shine,” he enthuses.</p>

The generally private Bailey, who came out publicly as gay in 2018, reveals: “Yes, I desire children – it’s such a privilege for a man. But I’m conscious of my current [busy] lifestyle. I want to ensure that if and when the time comes, I can be present.”</p>

<p>In a world that often prioritises ambition, he yearns for a balance that could offer a reimagined sense of home. “I’ve been reading about adoption and the prospects of co-parenting. I want a family, but I want to do it thoughtfully,” he emphasises.</p>

<p>Amid the glamour of fame, Bailey emphasises the importance of giving back to the community. Through his charitable efforts with Just Like Us and The Shameless Fund, which he launched last summer, he strives to raise awareness and support for LGBTQ+ issues globally. “If I can fill the spaces that I didn’t have while growing up, I feel that’s a brilliant thing,” he states.</p>

<p>Standing at an impressive 5’11” – or a full six feet with heels – Carla Martinesi’s height can’t help but draw the eye. “I used to be a model, but that wasn’t paying the bills,” she jokes as she prepares for our photoshoot, reflecting the playful yet indefatigable spirit of someone who has navigated the world of food and beverage to carve her name as the founder and CEO of food-saving app CHOMP.</p>

<p>While exuding a perky charm as she candidly discusses the awkwardness of her modelling days, it’s evident that Martinesi’s real passion lies in making the world a better place. “Don’t get me started because I can really talk a lot,” she laughs. “We can go on and on and on.” Though she teases about the endless flow of inspiration that fuels her award-winning food-waste initiative, her steely determination to take the venture further is also apparent.</p>

<p>Checking her makeup in the DIY mirror she’s fashioned out of her phone, she swiftly proceeds to model the garments selected from local brands. “Wow, this is really pretty; I could never afford this!” she exclaims, admiring one piece. Her infectious energy, inventiveness and down-to-earth demeanour blend beautifully into the mission she has embraced ¬– a perfect fit for an April Earth Month issue.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Roots and Revelations</h3>



<p>Between the bustling streets of Hong Kong and the serene Swiss Alps, Martinesi’s upbringing intricately shaped her worldview. “I was born in Hong Kong and moved around quite often due to my father’s job,” she recalls. Her childhood was punctuated with stints in Italy, the Middle East, Israel and France, but it was in Switzerland that she found her love for nature.</p>

<p>“Snow sports were part of our schooling, and every winter, I spent time skiing and snowboarding in the mountains,” she says, eyes gleaming with nostalgia. “Sitting at the top and taking in the panoramic views was when I knew I wanted future generations to experience that, too.”</p>

<p>Yet, it wasn’t just the breathtaking landscapes that instilled a love for the environment. Martinesi reflects on how her unique Swiss-Chinese household fostered a heartfelt commitment to sustainability. “My mother was resourceful in the kitchen, always finding ways to repurpose ingredients and leftovers,” she shares. “When herbs wilted, she’d make compound butter. We never ate the same food twice.”</p>

<p>Through the lens of the familial tradition of minimising waste, the seeds for CHOMP were sown.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Serving Up Solutions</h3>



<p>The idea for the app sprouted in 2015 while the hospitality management student worked in a prestigious hotel restaurant and witnessed a shocking amount of food waste tipped into bins. “I felt compelled to do something,” she says. Having returned to her Hong Kong roots in 2019, she landed a creative job in marketing, but the pandemic struck and her career path stalled. “I realised many friends in the F&amp;B industry were facing challenges, too,” she relates. “Conversations about food waste bubbled to the surface, and I decided to take action.”</p>

<p>Thus, the birth of CHOMP in 2020, a platform that connects F&amp;B businesses with customers at home wishing to enjoy discounted meal boxes filled with unsold food. Martinesi quickly made waves in the industry, saving more than 20,000 kilogrammes of edible food from landfills in the app’s first three years of operation and partnering with renowned names like Maxim’s and the Shangri-La hotel group.</p>



<p>But for her, success goes beyond numbers. “It’s intertwined,” she asserts. “I’m proud when we save even a single croissant; it shows that we’re making a difference. Through our app and events like The Rescued Feast, we’re transforming an uncomfortable conversation about waste into one that generates intrigue and knowledge. People realise how engaging and impactful sustainability can be.”</p>

<p>Her sense of fulfilment is rooted in CHOMP’s community impact, whether it’s the young girl asking about starting her own animal welfare business or the conversations ignited at workshops and events. “You can gauge success through tiny moments,” she reflects. “When a stranger walks up to me and shares they’ve used our app, or a restaurant says we’ve helped alleviate their waste problem, that’s when I know we’re on the right track.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Vision for Change</h3>



<p>Martinesi’s ambitious vision for the future includes reaching a target of 100,000 kilogrammes of food saved and engaging 500 F&amp;B partners by the end of this year as part of CHOMP’s expansion plan. “We want a larger-scale reduction of waste,” she emphasises, focusing on education initiatives that introduce sustainable practices to the next generation. “Workshops and social media campaigns like #TuesdayTips impart practical advice for minimising household food waste. I want to see community engagement become a cornerstone of our mission.”</p>

<p>She admits: “Food waste isn’t a pretty subject. How do you make garbage a compelling conversation starter?” Yet, through inventive initiatives like The Rescued Feast – a series of dinners where top chefs create dishes from surplus food – and educational outreach to schools, she has successfully made this conversation accessible and engaging to the community.</p>

<p>Despite her accolades, including being named on the Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ list, the young Millennial boss remains humble, always looking ahead. “Recognition helps open doors, especially as a woman in a male-dominated field, but we’re still grappling with challenging issues like food waste and climate change,” she shares.</p>

<p>Martinesi’s passion is palpable, almost overwhelming. “I need water. Whew!” she laughs, during our conversation, her excitement evident. “I can’t help but be invested in what CHOMP does. It’s a mission I take to heart.”</p>

<p>To the outside eye, she has already achieved so much, making a difference at such a youthful age, but she sees it otherwise. With a hint of pride that those who are even younger will take on the environmental mantle and do even better, she stresses: “I cannot do this alone. I rely on the younger generations to continue this work. It’s really a team effort.”</p>

<p>The first Ghost Series II that was showcased at the launch is a Ghost Extended Series II. It features a sheer, monolithic exterior in magnificent Twilight Purple, complemented by a hand-painted single coachline in Seashell. The motor car offers 170mm more space in the rear suite, enabled by extending the rear doors and apertures only, which preserves its elegant silhouette.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Exquisite Interior</h3>



<p>The interior of Ghost Series II celebrates craftsmanship, both analogue and digital. Housed in the new pillar-to-pillar glass panel, the Central Information Display incorporates the marque’s advanced operating system. This enables clients to extend their Bespoke commission from hardware to software as the colour of the digital instrument dials can now be tailored to complement the motor car’s interior palette or exterior finish.</p>

<p>Entertainment and connectivity functions have been significantly upgraded for Ghost Series II. Rear seat passengers can now connect up to two streaming devices to the rear screens, stream independently on each screen, and select their preferred entertainment from a newly developed interface, which also manages seating functions such as massaging, heating and cooling. Bluetooth® headphones of any type can be paired with the rear seat infotainment system, and all occupants benefit from an upgraded Wi-Fi® hotspot and USB-C® charging ports hidden discreetly in the centre console.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>C</strong>ontemporary craft</h3>



<p>Ghost Series II benefits from bold new expressions of contemporary craft, meticulously conceived by the marque’s artisans. Alongside the Central Information Display, on the passenger side, is the new Spirit of Ecstasy Clock Cabinet. This vitrine houses an analogue timepiece and an up-lit, mirror-polished, solid stainless-steel Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. She is placed on a stage with a matte black back panel and high gloss side panels to create a reflection effect. On entering the motor car, the Spirit of Ecstasy is initially illuminated from below, as if she is being lit by a spotlight, before her stage lighting settles to a soft glow.</p>

<p>Ghost Series II continues Rolls-Royce’s exploration of textiles with Duality Twill, a new rayon fabric made from bamboo, first introduced with the Cullinan Series II. Inspired by the bamboo grove near Sir Henry Royce’s former winter home in South of France, the twill textile features an embroidered ‘Duality’ graphic, reflecting the interlinked initials of the brand&#8217;s founders and evoking nautical themes reminiscent of sailing yachts along the French Riviera. Developed over a year in collaboration with a master weaver, this intricate textile requires 20 hours to construct and incorporates up to 2.2 million stitches and 11 miles of thread. Each piece is meticulously crafted and laser-cut for precision. The base textile is available in three colours — Lilac, Chocolate, and Black — with clients able to select from 51 thread colours.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Superb Engineering</h3>



<p>At the heart of Ghost Series II is the marque’s uncompromising, potent and near-silent 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 petrol engine and hallmark eight-speed gearbox, enabling all-wheel steering and all-wheel drivetrain. Maximum torque is available from just 1,600rpm – only 600rpm above tick-over, creating the perception of one, endless gear and the unique ‘waftability’ associated with the Rolls-Royce experience.</p>

<p>An African jewel, Nairobi acts as a magnet for those wishing to find first-class cosmopolitan creature comforts as well as wild beasts in all their marvellous nobility in the city’s national park. Indeed, the Kenyan capital’s attractions have mushroomed over the years to include great restaurants and nightlife, world-class museums and historic buildings, and a fantastic range of things to see and do.</p>

<p>Serving as an important economic, financial and transportation hub, the fast-growing city is the most populous is East Africa and its 5.5 million souls bring a vibrancy to the local cultural scene. Weather-wise, it is a congenial destination, with June through to September among the driest months and when Nairobi National Park is at its best.</p>

<p>Just next to City Square with its imposing statue of the founding father of modern Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, is the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), perhaps the best-known landmark in the city. A fusion of modern and local styles, KICC’s interior has been distinctly ‘Africanised’ and contains an amphitheatre designed in the shape of a traditional hut. A speedy lift takes eager visitors to the top floor of this 32-storey, saucer-topped tower – formerly the city’s tallest building – for magnificent views of Nairobi’s chaotic glory and the hinterland beyond. On clear days it is possible to spy the rugged summit of Mount Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa.</p>

<p>The city’s Parliament Buildings are another notable monument, where entry into the National Assembly can be obtained to see African democracy in action, or a tour arranged with the sergeant-at-arms.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">National Treasures</h3>



<p>History buffs will want to explore the Nairobi National Museum, which reflects the story of Kenya. Established in 1910 and set within lush, leafy grounds just outside the city centre, this imposing edifice is one of the oldest museums in East Africa. It is full of amazing artefacts such as ceremonial Siwa horns dating back to 1688, ethnographic paintings of Kenya’s tribes inked by naturalist Joy Adamson of Born Free fame, and a Kalenjin cloak made from the skins of Sykes’ monkeys. Of special note is the life-size replica of the massive elephant known as Ahmed, who was considered to be largest tusker at the time of the country’s independence from Britain in 1963, and was accorded special status by President Jomo Kenyatta.</p>

<p>An extensive array of stuffed species spans an aardvark, a giant forest hog and an okapi (zebra giraffe). The Hominid Skull Room contains an extraordinary range of early human fossils in perhaps one of the best collections in the world. Another room is dedicated to the history of Kenya in the context of East Africa.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Out of Africa</h3>



<p>The nearby Snake Park is a great place to see animals alive and unfettered. It boasts an impressive range of serpents, most notably the puff adder, black mamba, Egyptian cobra, African rock python and the Gaboon viper, whose four-centimetre-long fangs offer a slightly menacing presence. Other draws here are exotic fish, lizards, turtles and crocodiles.</p>

<p>Situated some 10 kilometres outside central Nairobi, the Karen Blixen Museum is a must-visit for those who loved the film Out of Africa. The Danish author resided here on a coffee plantation between 1914 and 1931, and the colonial elegance of the property set in charming gardens has been preserved. The building contains memorabilia from Blixen’s time in Africa and the shooting of the film. Guided tours are available that detail her tumultuous life and times.</p>

<p>To absorb some of Africa’s rich indigenous culture, head to Bomas of Kenya, a tourist village also located to the southwest of the city. It consists of clusters of homesteads (bomas) representing various Kenyan tribal groups. Among a repertoire of some 50 traditional dances and songs performed by different ethnic communities expect Embu drumming, an enactment of a Kikuyu circumcision ceremony, spectacular Kalenjin warrior dances and Arabic-influenced Swahili music.</p>

<p>The National Park, established in 1946, is by far the most popular tourist destination in the city. Offering an unforgettable chance to view rhinos and lions within sight of Nairobi’s modern skyscrapers, this amazing tract of grassland and acacia savannah is fenced on the city side to protect its domestic population. Nothing like it exists elsewhere in Africa – world-class game viewing in a park straddling the southern outskirts of a national capital.</p>

<p>Open plains slope gently from west to east while rocky ridges are covered in rich vegetation. Streams run southeast into the Mbagathi river, and even during the dry season the park has a permanent source of water, which enables it to attract big game. Four of the Big Five – buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino – reside in the park, with only elephants absent as the reserve is too small to support them. Rangers keep visitors regularly updated on the movements of lions and hyenas, as well as the resident cheetahs and leopards, which can require more patience to spot. The world’s densest population of black rhinos is found here too. Other animals often spotted in the park are gazelles, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and buffaloes.</p>

<p>Nairobi Safari Walk run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, whose headquarters is located near one of the entrances, offers tourists the chance to see some of the Nairobi’s wilder residents from the safety of a raised boardwalk. Nestled inside the park is the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery, where handlers bottle-feed groups of baby elephants. Not far off, in the suburb of Lang’ata, the Giraffe Centre also allows visitors to witness conservation efforts, particularly with regard to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Feeding Time</h3>



<p>Such are its depth of offerings and breadth of flavours that Nairobi is considered one of the culinary capitals of Africa. There is a plethora of great restaurants and cafes to try, and some have gorgeous garden settings, making eating out even more enjoyable. The Westlands and Karen neighbourhoods are blessed with an array of upmarket dining options. Lord Delamere Terrace is a sophisticated eatery which allows visitors to taste old-style Africa; it also features one of the continent’s classic bars. The Karen Blixen Coffee Garden has a wonderful English country-garden vibe, with dishes ranging from gourmet burgers to Swahili curries. Its Sunday lunch buffet is popular.</p>

<p>For a uniquely ‘Out of Africa’ culinary experience, seek out Carnivore, one of the most famous restaurants in the city. Billed as a Beast of a Feast since 1980, its speciality is nyama choma (barbecued meat). Near the entrance is a huge barbecue pit crammed full of Maasai swords laden with beef, pork, lamb, chicken and farmed game meat such as crocodile and ostrich. The all-you-can-eat meat comes with salad, vegetable sides and sauces, plus a soup of the day. Once satiated, diners are encouraged to cease the feeding frenzy and move onto dessert and coffee by lowering a white paper flag.</p>

<p>The gleaming transformation of Hong Kong’s old airport in East Kowloon – once the end point for perhaps the most perilous and nerve-racking descent in aviation history – into the magnificent new Kai Tak Sports Park is undoubtedly a huge lift for the city. Spanning 28 hectares, it is the largest sports, entertainment and mega-event complex in Hong Kong history, and shining at its centrepiece is a spectacular 50,000-seat stadium. </p>

<p>Indeed, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee didn’t hold back in highlighting the significance of the sports park during its opening ceremony on 1 March. He also marvelled at the engineering achievements it embraces. Kai Tak Stadium, for instance, boasts one of the largest opening and closing canopies in the world, a flexible pitch system that switches from natural turf to other surfaces, and other advanced design features, enabling it to host a variety of large-scale events in different weather conditions. </p>

<p>Aside from flying Hong Kong’s flag as a world-class venue for mega-events, the impressive development located on the site of the former Kai Tak airport offers a host of other attractions, including an indoor arena, a public sports ground, a retail and leisure mall, a waterfront dining area, an outdoor theatre and open spaces for public enjoyment. It was constructed at a cost of HK$30 billion.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Arena applause</h3>



<p>Kai Tak Sports Park has already played host to world-class events, most notably snooker’s World Grand Prix and the recent Hong Kong Rugby Sevens. The former took place at Kai Tak Arena, the park’s indoor sports and community-events centre that has the flexibility to seat up to 10,000 people. </p>

<p>Bringing this premier snooker tournament to Hong Kong was undoubtedly a major coup, and it was considered a resounding success by many within the sport. The head of the World Snooker Tour, Simon Brownell, opined that Hong Kong is now one of the best places in the world to put on snooker tournaments, a sentiment echoed by others, including reigning world champion Kyren Wilson. </p>

<p>Kai Tak Arena’s inaugural major event did not pass completely smoothly, however. The last-minute withdrawal of seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan for health reasons was a setback. Although O’Sullivan’s superstar status was surely missed, the quality of the snooker on display throughout the tournament was of such a high order that this loss was less significant. </p>

<p>A teething problem saw the ejection of fans from the arena before the conclusion of a match because transport services would end at midnight. Images of spectators being herded out were viewed around the world, casting local officialdom in a rather negative light. Brownell, though, indicated that Hong Kong’s reputation as a successful event manager would not suffer as a result of this unfortunate one-off curfew.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">World-class goal</h3>



<p>According to Roy Ying, a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, the incident serves as reminder of the importance of meticulous planning and effective communication when organising major events. He believes Hong Kong must enhance its ability to deliver world-class experiences and invest in nurturing event-management talent in order to meet its goal of becoming the go-to destination for international events. </p>

<p>One positive in terms of crowd management is that Kai Tak Sports Park utilises Easy Leave, Hong Kong’s first AI-based real-time crowd data analysis platform, to facilitate the swift and safe departure of attendees from the complex. &nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stadium for the stars</h3>



<p>The park’s star venue, Kai Tak Stadium, served as the cauldron of world-class rugby during the Hong Kong Sevens at the end of March, and is set to welcome other major sporting events within the year. As the Chief Executive stated during its unveiling last month, a number of events in the 15th National Games, jointly organised by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, will be held here in November. He added: “And you can count on scores of concerts by top singers and bands from home and abroad, here to raise the roof of Kai Tak Stadium.” </p>

<p>Fans of Coldplay and Nicholas Tse will certainly pack it to the rafters this month. To namedrop a few more, Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin will take to the stage next month, the first Mandopop star to do so. In June, it will be the turn of Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou to hold court at three sold-out concerts.</p>

<p>The sparkling new stadium is seen by players in the travel industry as a potential game-changer in the battle with Singapore to attract major acts to Hong Kong. However, after losing out to the Lion City last year in the race to sign up Taylor Swift, the recent announcement that Lady Gaga’s Asia stop next month on her world tour will take place at the Singapore National Stadium is another big disappointment for Hong Kong. </p>

<p>Despite this, Travel Industry Council Chairman Tommy Tam believes the city now has far more leverage to attract top stars in the future. Kai Tak Stadium and the sports park as a whole are important milestones in the ability of Hong Kong to provide to diversified offerings to tourists. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Terrific turf</h3>



<p>Facilities at the complex are certainly of the highest standard, in line with those of world-class sports and entertainment destinations overseas. Impressively, the park’s public sports ground, Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, which has a capacity of 5,000, utilises Lay and Play technology, in which hybrid carpet pitches are grown off-site and then installed. Offering the advantages of faster pitch recovery and more flexible event scheduling, the system is widely used in top European stadiums. Thus, its pitch quality should be on a par with English football stalwarts Anfield, Wembley Stadium, and London Stadium, which was built for the 2012 Olympic Games and is now West Ham United’s home ground.</p>

<p>“The turf system is like a carpet with natural and artificial grass fibres attached to it,” explains Daniel Fan, Operations Manager of Kai Tak Sports Park. “After the carpet is laid, it only requires filling with a layer of lightweight planting sand and simple grooming to stand upright, ensuring it is readily available for use in sporting events. This innovative technology is not only efficient in establishing a high-quality playing surface instantly but also eliminates the lengthy planting process, making turf care and maintenance more flexible.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Green glory</h3>



<p>A raft of green and sustainable features was incorporated into Kai Tak Sports Park during the design and construction phases. To outline just a few, there are more 1,000 trees to reduce urban heat island effect and improve visual comfort; all buildings feature advanced ventilation and green aspects to improve air quality and reduce carbon emission; and charging facilities for electric vehicles are provided at all private car parking spaces.</p>

<p>To strengthen the appeal to visitors, some of the hotels and dining establishments connected with the sports park wooed clients with special celebration packages during the run-up to the opening and beyond. One company, Charter Junks, enabled Rugby Sevens ticket-holders to book a relaxing morning boat trip embarking from Central and dropping them off a short walk from the stadium – with a reverse itinerary available in the evening. An open bar, plenty of snacks and the iconic Hong Kong skyline en route will surely have kept the competition’s characteristically raucous fans extremely merry.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Happy landing</h3>



<p>Cathay Pacific, which called Kai Tak Airport home for more than 50 years, sees the new state-of-the-art, multipurpose Kai Tak Sports Park as symbolic of the growth and development of Hong Kong.
