<p>Although these can be seen in any part of the migraineur’s visual field, it is actually a trick of the perceptual imagination; the patterns and shapes are not there in reality. Their occurrence is most likely unrelated to the eye itself and caused by irritation of the vision centre of the brain. More complex and symmetrical patterns can sometimes be seen, and even the blind have been known to experience this disturbing phenomenon.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Distorted perception</h3>



<p>Some disturbances are so bizarre that patients delay seeing a doctor for fear of being thought mentally ill. Objects can appear distorted and contorted in some types of visual aura, as if being visualised through a funhouse mirror; body proportions seem out of shape, necks become larger and legs look abnormally small. This is aptly called Alice in Wonderland syndrome since author Lewis Carroll was afflicted by migraine and used his bizarre hallucinatory attacks as inspiration to create Alice and her magical world.</p>

<p>Changes in distance perceptions are also a feature of visual aura – how close or far away objects seem to the beholder could be totally unrelated to reality.</p>

<p>Distortions of sensation or movement are characteristics of classic aura. Tingles or numbness on one side of the face and in the hands and arms can become alarming very quickly. Weakness and clumsiness can occur, while dizziness or abnormal sensations of motion or auditory misperceptions such as a ringing or crackling noise in the ears have been reported. For some sufferers, irritation in the part of the brain that handles memory also results in amnesia.</p>

<p>Medical research conducted into ways to block or ease the transmission of overactive pain nerves has highlighted a relationship between serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain, and migraine. The triptan family of drugs has demonstrated efficacy in halting migraine attacks by affecting serotonin receptors. These drugs are often prescribed to patients when other preventative medications, such as painkillers or beta blockers, fail to provide relief. <p>A major new study led by the University of Oxford and involving more than 89,000 people has found that triptans are the most effective medicine for adults experiencing acute migraine. For others, this early autumn celebration of watchmaking ingenuity fell conveniently on landmark anniversaries and therefore represented an ideal moment for the provision of iconic new releases.</p>

<p>Take one of the six founding brands of the inaugural Geneva Watch Days in 2020, <strong>Breitling</strong>, which is marking 140 years since its 1884 founding. At this august congregation of the great and the good, the watchmaker introduced three new limited-edition versions of models deeply significant to its heritage that feature – in a first for a brand renowned for its aviation classics – a perpetual calendar chronograph movement. Utilised in new <em>Premier, Navitimer and Chronomat</em> timepieces, the in-house B19 movement boasts a solid-gold rotor for the anniversary as well as a perpetual calendar to chart the complexities of leap years and differing month lengths. An attractive moonphase display also embellishes the watches.</p>

<p>Each of the new iterations retains many of the features that have made the collections so desirable to watch aficionados over the years. The <em>Premier B19 Datora 42 140th Anniversary</em> model, for instance, has distinctive yet familiar Arabic numerals, while the Navitimer B19 Chronograph 43 Perpetual Calendar 140th Anniversary watch sports a beautiful contrast between its signature slide-rule in black and its fetching 18-carat red-gold dial. Likewise, the <em>Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar 140th Anniversary</em> comes with many of its traditional characteristics but also a skeletonised dial, marking another landmark for Breitling.</p>

<p>Three of the <strong>Bulgari</strong> watches at the fair encompass a disruptive musical element inspired by a collaboration with world-renowned conductor Lorenzo Viotti. The precocious musical talent has helped to craft a distinctively dissonate chiming sound for these reinvented timepieces. Their horological acoustics are achieved through a devilish musical interval known as the tritone, which offers an unsettling soundscape often harnessed by classical composers. The so-called ‘Devil’s interval’ is perfect for creating dramatic tension – plus tantalisingly alerting a watch owner to the precise time at regular intervals via this unique tonal quality.</p>

<p>Powered by a BVV800 manufacture manual-winding mechanical movement with Grande and Petite sonnerie, the <em>Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon</em> automatically chimes all the hours and quarters, and can be set to repeat the hours, quarters and minutes on demand. Four gongs and hammers chime the quarters in dissonant notes. For the <em>Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon</em>, the modified BVL428 calibre means that three notes are emitted on the quarters. Last and least complicated is the two-gong Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon. All three are crafted from different materials to create striking nuances in the chords.</p>

<p>Another novel collaborative effort, this time between Swiss watchmaker <strong>Gerald Charles</strong> and the world of motorcycling in the guise of Ducati, spawned an entirely new creation at Geneva, the <em>Maestro 4.0 Ducati 30° Anniversario 916</em>. Limited to 250 pieces, this eye-catching timepiece pays homage to the iconic Ducati 916 motorcycle, using superlight and resistant materials familiar in road racing, and displaying time on an open-worked Ducati wheel at the centre of the case. Nodding to the brand’s founder, Gérald Genta, who favoured the complication, a jumping hours calibre indicates the hours on this skeletonised wheel.</p>

<p>Coming in a limited run of 88 pieces, the upgraded <em>Oil Pump</em> model released by <strong>Jacob &amp; Co.</strong> in Geneva retains its signature bobbing motion to imitate an oil derrick, but this visual treat can now come to life on demand via a pusher at one o’clock and lasts for a mesmerising 35 seconds. Housed in a smaller 44mm case of 18-carat rose gold and sapphire, a single-axis flying tourbillon allows for a more compact design but in no way compromises the intricately crafted effects of the gold-plated derricks, barrel and pipelines on the dial.</p>

<p>By releasing a new civilian version of the <em>Type XX Chronograph</em> in gold and ceramic, <strong>Breguet</strong> acted on stated intentions to continue to expand the line with different sizes and materials while staying true to its aviation roots. Innovations in this 42mm rose-gold model include a gold bezel with a bidirectional ring crafted out of ceramic, a substance never used before by the manufacture. The elegant sunburst blue dial has three counters with a snailed motif to add depth, and the self-winding Calibre 728 movement – realised just last year and visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback – ensures operational smoothness.</p>

<p>Swiss brand <strong>Carl Suchy &amp; Söhne</strong> added to its Belvedere collection with golden-looking <em>Champagne</em> and deep-red <em>Bordeaux</em> variants, providing dazzling novel colour schemes designed to entice new admirers. A notable feature of the timepieces is the gold-plated oscillating rotor embellished with micro-engraving of the façade of Vienna’s Belvedere palace. A moving date window enhances a dial whose concave rhodium-plated indexes are filled with SuperLumiNova.</p>

<p>Another collaboration unveiled at Geneva was the remarkable <em>Le Régulateur Louis Erard x Kudoke</em>. Independent Swiss brand <strong>Louis Erard</strong> has gained a reputation over the years for partnerships that defy the norm, and joining forces with <strong>Stefan Kudoke</strong> has unleashed a timepiece in four variations evoking many signature elements of the German watchmaking maestro’s handiwork. For instance, distinctive three in-line hands on frosted or mother-of-pearl dials; a rhodium-plated railway-track chapter ring and counter rings; and typical Kudoke colour schemes are all notable features.</p>

<p><strong>Blancpain</strong> took the opportunity to release new variants in the Villeret collection with a colour code inspired by the Vallée de Joux fir trees, a luscious canopy near the manufacture’s operations. The <em>Extraplate, Quantième Complet, Quantième Phases de Lune </em>and<em> Tourbillon Carrousel </em>all sport beautiful hues of green while retaining the traditional codes of the line.</p>

<p>Geneva Watch Days saw <strong>Favre Leuba</strong> make a bold statement by releasing, among others, six new <em>Chief </em>references – three for the<em> Chief Chronograph</em> and three for the <em>Chief Date</em>. The ongoing reinvigoration of the 287-year-old brand sees design reinterpretations of a modernised retro style from the 1970s melded with updated contemporary aesthetics. Also, inserted at their heart are intricate movements from Manufacture La Joux-Perret.</p>

<p>Though economists and historians may argue about how long this privileged position may last in a rapidly changing world, there is less dispute over the numerous benefits it brings to the US economy, businessaes and consumers. Enzio von Pfeil, a prominent financial commentor in Hong Kong, cites the US Treasury’s ability to issue as much debt as it wants as a key bonus, as well as the elimination of transaction costs. “All of America’s international transactions are done via her own US dollar, thus obviating any foreign exchange risk as well as foreign exchange conversion costs,” he says.</p>

<p>Other financial advantages derive from the depth of the dollar-dominated global payments system – all global US dollar transactions are easily processed via Swift (the interbank financial telecommunications network) – and the US dollar’s broad acceptance. American consumers also benefit from the willingness of countries to hold the US dollar as part of their reserves portfolio since this cushions their exchange rate.</p>

<p>As Professor Kent Matthews of Cardiff Business School in the United Kingdom outlines, short-term inflows and outflows are absorbed by the global currency markets without much change in the price of the dollar. “This means that the dollar exchange rate has a marginally higher value relative to other currencies. This is the dollar premium,” he says.</p>

<p>There are political advantages, too. “Owning the world’s predominant currency, the Americans can weaponise it by freezing another nation’s dollar assets, denying other nations any access to the dollar, or blocking their access to Swift,” notes von Pfeil.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Historical fluctuations</h3>



<p>However, having a powerful global currency can also be a curse. “The yen and the pre-euro Deutschmark resisted attempts by the global market to make them larger internationalised currencies because upward pressure on their respective exchange rates would hurt their exporters,” explains Matthews of Japan and Germany’s export-led economies.</p>

<p>While any credible challenge to US dollar supremacy remains a subject of speculation, the same was once said of the British pound, which had prevailed for a century in the Pax Britannica period prior to the First World War (1914-1918). “Sterling lost its dominance because the immutability of its value was lost as it was weakened after the First World War. Its net foreign asset position declined dramatically after this war, and fell to zero after the Second World War,” says Matthews.</p>

<p>“It was losing in terms of trade dominance and capital dominance. At the same time there was a credible alternative,” he adds, referring to the eventual succession of the US dollar.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dollar supremacy</h3>



<p>Jean-Marie Mercadal, CEO of Hong Kong-headquartered Syncicap Asset Management, points out that the supreme strength of the dollar as the international currency of reference is justified in several respects – including that the US is the world’s largest economy with more than 25% of global GDP; US equities account for nearly 65% of international equity indices; it is the greatest military power; US soft power is strong, culturally and technologically; and the dollar is accepted everywhere.</p>

<p>This all-powerful position of American economic and political dominance is echoed in financial statistics cited by von Pfeil: “88% of foreign exchange trades involve US dollars; 80% of all foreign trade is conducted in US dollars, and about 60% of all foreign currency reserves consist of US dollars.”</p>

<p>At this stage, von Pfeil sees no real prospect of the dollar being usurped; the euro, the world’s second most important currency, commands just 20% of global total reserves. He also notes that any moves to create a Brics – the Brazil, Russia, India and China-founded international organisation – digital currency or gold-backed stablecoin are still in their embryonic stages, plus such initiatives could be derailed by internal competition between its member states.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rise of the renminbi?</h3>



<p>The renminbi, von Pfeil believes, is not ready to be a contender. “The yuan is a controlled currency, meaning that the RMB is neither freely convertible nor tradeable,” he says, also pointing to a dwindling share of renminbi global forex reserves since 2022. Furthermore, there is no legal framework for global renminbi transactions on the scale, or with the depth, of Swift.</p>

<p>According to Matthews, Beijing’s tight control of fund flows under its capital account is the standout hurdling block to the yuan becoming the dominant currency. He acknowledges that “the renminbi is a threat to the dominance of the dollar” but only in the long term in the event of further relaxation of flow restrictions.</p>

<p>Other financial experts are more bullish about the currency of the world’s second-largest economy, and highlight that the US dollar is beginning to face competition from the renminbi. In March last year, the latter overtook the dollar to become the ascendant currency in China’s own cross-border payments, according to China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange. “China now exports more than 50% to other emerging countries that can be paid in renminbi that they get in return for their sales of raw materials,” says Mercadal. “Saudi Arabia, for example, sells oil to China and buys high value-added manufacturing goods in return, such as solar panels.”</p>

<p>He sees great significance in such transactions, noting that compared to 20 years ago China now has a wealth of high-quality manufactured products to trade, attracting countries that can pay with commodities or agricultural goods.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Risks and rewards</h3>



<p>Despite this, the ability to settle trades in renminbi alone is unlikely to boost its use, according to Sam Kima, Senior Vice-President of bullion services provider First Gold. He points out that the volume of such trades depends on exporters’ willingness to accept the currency for payment, which in turn depends on their ability to use the yuan accrued.</p>

<p>“As the renminbi is not broadly used in international trade and finance, there are relatively few outlets to spend these proceeds. Cumulating the inflow would therefore incur substantial costs and raise currency risks,” he says. “The yuan may gain ground through bilateral agreements and economic growth, but the dollar’s established trust, transparency and stability give it a significant advantage.</p>

<p>“Furthermore, the US political system, despite its complexities, provides a stable and predictable environment for investors. The rule of law, property rights and institutional stability in the US create a favourable climate for the dollar to remain the preferred reserve currency.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Money as a weapon</h3>



<p>Perversely, any real threat to the US dollar could be as a result of its strength. Von Pfeil explains: “Weaponisation is the key threat to the popularity of the US dollar. If a country knows that its US dollar assets will be frozen (step in Russia), or that it will be denied access to US dollars, not to mention denied access to Swift, then why trade in US dollars?”</p>

<p>Escalating geopolitical events, shifting national interests and growing non-US trade, particularly with Asia, have spurred some emerging economies to consider diversifying their external relations. “Countries in the Middle East and North Africa are becoming acutely aware of the risks emanating from their dependence on the US dollar. Dollar dependence also limits their economic sovereignty by increasing their vulnerability to fluctuations in the US economy,” says Kima, who notes that higher international borrowing costs from hikes in US interest rates are another concern.</p>

<p>As many commentators indicate, any shift from one currency dominance to another can take several decades. “For now, there are no real competitors to the dollar,” affirms Mercadal. “The renminbi is not yet freely convertible, and the euro is a political construct that can be fragile.”</p>

<p>“Coming from a musical family, I was always surrounded by classical pieces and French singers,” he recalls. Although he played the piano, he felt a different calling. Academic struggles led him to vocational school, where he initially aspired to be a chef.</p>

<p>Loriot’s parents, although not industry professionals, had instilled in him a love of fine dining. Their frequent visits to Michelin-starred restaurants provided invaluable gastronomic experiences. “Without their encouragement, I might not have pursued my education at food and beverage school,” he reflects.</p>

<p>While he was raised in a region renowned for the beauty of its vineyards, it was his family’s dining preferences that ignited his interest in wine. “My parents encouraged me to acquire a unique skill set that would set me apart [in the F&amp;B field] – knowledge of wine,” he says.</p>

<p>This support was instrumental in shaping his career. After three years of studying food and beverage management, a further year specialising in wine at a school in Nîmes was a turning point. There, he unearthed not only a fervour for wine but a natural aptitude for its appreciation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Creative Juices</h3>



<p>In 2011, Loriot’s professional path began in earnest as he entered the intense world of fine dining. His early career was marked by stints at prestigious restaurants, including those by Alain Ducasse, where he honed his skills as a sommelier. His time at The Dorchester in London and later at Rech, in Paris and in Hong Kong, heightened his understanding of wine and food pairing.</p>

<p>One of his most memorable episodes in eight years as a sommelier was at Rech in Paris, whose “talented chef had a deep passion for wine”. This synergy culminated in a unique collaboration whereby Loriot’s wine choice inspired a new dish, showcasing the harmonious relationship between cuisine and wine.</p>

<p>As Head Sommelier at Rech, he managed teams, oversaw stock and crafted engaging lists that reflected his wine ethos. These roles deepened his knowledge and helped him grow as a leader in a dynamic environment. “Developing unique wine pairings became a key aspect of my role,” he notes of his constant mission to enhance guests’ dining experiences.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Think to Drink</h3>



<p>The idea for ThinkWine had been brewing long before its 2019 launch. Loriot landed in Hong Kong in 2016, and after two years at Rech (which was located in the InterContinental Hotel) he stepped up the service industry ladder to become Group Sommelier at a thriving restaurant group. But then, inspired by personal milestones – his marriage and the impending arrival of his child – he recognised the time had come to establish a venue that encapsulated his wine vision. “We had not encountered a wine bar in Hong Kong that embodied the essence of ThinkWine,” he says.</p>

<p>From the outset, his goal as founder and Managing Director was to curate an exceptional list. This devotion to exclusivity and quality sets ThinkWine apart – for instance, it’s the only establishment outside France that offers bottles from Château de Cherubin &amp; Rayas, the spectacular Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley. “We procure wines directly from France, leveraging the relationships I’ve established with various winemakers,” he explains, highlighting the meticulous selection process that defines his cellar.</p>

<p>At ThinkWine, patrons can expect a diverse array of wines, with approximately 75% of offerings from France. Selections from emerging wine-producing countries ensure accessibility for all enthusiasts, with bottles priced from HK$350 to $42,000. “Our focus is on the quality and flavour of the wines we choose,” he states.</p>

<p>In recent years, Loriot has championed producers outside his homeland, recognising their distinctive profiles. “When I arrived in Hong Kong, my knowledge was primarily centred on French varieties,” he admits. However, exposure to diverse labels from Australia, Italy and beyond has enriched his perspective. “Each country has its unique characteristics and stories behind its wines,” he adds, underscoring a pledge to showcase a broad spectrum of styles.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Glass Runneth Over</h3>



<p>Loriot’s love of wine is intertwined with his philosophy of happiness. “Wine is indeed a significant part of my happiness,” he affirms. However, he emphasises that true fulfilment comes from balancing professional commitments with personal relationships. “The connections we build enhance our appreciation of life’s joys, including wine,” he reflects.</p>

<p>Looking ahead, he aims to extend ThinkWine’s scope. “In January 2023, we successfully launched our distribution channels to restaurants and hotels,” he reveals. He also envisions establishing new wine bars in Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai, or even returning to France to share his inventive approach to wine enjoyment.</p>

Wine Chemistry: At ThinkWine, entrepreneurial oenophile [or epicurean] Romain Loriot uncorks elegance and joie de vivre 


<p>A beautiful home has all the more character if it is situated in a picturesque neighbourhood. This elaborately stylish 800-square-foot apartment in Oliwa, a historic suburb of Gdańsk in Poland, certainly embodies the spirit of its surrounding landscape. Remodelled in striking combinations of dark teal green, grey stone and warm wood by design firm Raca Architekci, it involved a year of planning and renovation. Michal Raca, the main designer and founder of the firm, worked closely with his client to materialize her vision of a nature-inspired home. </p>

<p>A sense of grandeur is immediate as you enter the flat. The absence of an entrance hall increases the interior space and imparts volume, imbuing comfort from the moment you step through the door. A tall elliptical mirror framed in gold brass is strategically placed so you can check your appearance before leaving or entering, while a black veneer bench with an upholstered seat is a convenient spot for slipping shoes on or off. To provide maximum storage in such a small space, the designer has incorporated cupboards that blend with the walls, this minimalist approach gives a clean feel. </p>

<p>A polished terrazzo floor serves as a prelude to the wooden flooring within. A brass wall lamp is placed as a stylish ornament, its adjustable lighting setting the mood of the space. The rich teal hues of the feature walls act as a sophisticated backdrop for contemporary furniture. The designer has deliberately used mirrors of different shapes and sizes to make the apartment look more spacious. Large black and gold pots with large plants can be found in different corners of the house, flaunting the green thumb of the owner and her love for nature. </p>

<p>The open kitchen is the heart of the apartment, linking the living and dining areas. Not the keenest of cooks, the homeowner initially envisaged a small, compact kitchen, but one of the layouts proposed by studio founder Michal Raca offered a larger layout with a kitchen island. Selecting this option has proved a joy; it has become her favorite space, allowing her to host friends and discover delightful new recipes. </p>

<p>The island has a bold countertop of bardiglio marble from Spain, which is paired with other expanses of grey to emphasize the beauty of the stone. Its complementary brass accessories look like jewels adjoining the teal green dining area.  A round gold-rimmed mirror serves as a backdrop to the dining table balancing the dark tones of teal allowing more natural light to be reflected from the walls. Two beautiful round pendant lights hang above the kitchen island while a similar horizontal pendant light illuminates the dining space. </p>

<p>The upholstery is set to be the same shade as the walls, whether for curtains, the bed’s velvet headboard or the fabric of armchairs. A wall of windows spanning the living and dining areas offers panoramic views of the Baltic port city’s old town, where rows of red roofs reach out to the horizon. The apertures allow abundant light to fill the whole space and are embellished with heavy velour dark green curtains in a décor reminiscent of an opera house. The velour finish of the walls reduces dazzling reflections as the sunlight streams in.</p>

<p>A cosy space for unwinding, the master bedroom is dressed in two contrasting materials, plush velour panels above the veneer. Behind the bed, an upholstered headrest built into the lower part of the wall adds optimum comfort. The different textured panels are separated by a strip of bardiglio marble underlined in black, echoing the theme of the living quarters. The eye-catching originality of this design is enhanced by beautiful golden lamps that provide subtle contrast. </p>

<p>Following Raca’s extensive renovations, the bedroom and en-suite bathroom have become one coherent space, framed by large sloping windows at one end. The master suite’s aesthetic value has been further elevated by the addition of a glass wall partition for easy access between the two areas. It is a functional solution that not only allows natural light to flow into the bathroom – unusual in apartment blocks these days – but also gives the appearance of a more spacious bedroom. For the sake of privacy, a curtain can be drawn across the divide and bestows the ambience of a luxury spa. </p>

<p>Her early efforts paid off when she came third in the US-wide singing contest, The Next Miley Cyrus Project, in 2009. This exposure, combined with her father’s support in building a recording studio, set the stage for her future success. <p>Dividing her time between New York and Los Angeles, she likes sketching and visits Disney World with her Irish actor beau, Barry Keoghan. <p>The skiing opportunities in Austria are simply breathtaking. Deeply embedded into the culture of this landlocked Alpine nation during the winter months, the pastime is taken super seriously. Most forms of winter sports are available, with alpine and Nordic skiing the most common, while snowboarding, cross-country skiing and sledging are also popular.</p>

<p>For those attracted to nightlife as well as outdoor leisure, many of the famous ski resorts have also accrued a reputation for their après-ski shenanigans as much as for the skiing itself – none more so, perhaps, than St Anton am Arlberg in the west of the country.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Topping the lot</h3>



<p>The global reputation of the Arlberg ski region emerged in the late 19th century, following the opening of the Arlberg railway tunnel in 1884. Ski-Club Arlberg, the first ski club in the Alps, opened in 1901 and St Anton’s inaugural ski school was established in 1924. The sleepy village was well on the way to becoming an iconic venue for winter sports enthusiasts.</p>

<p>St Anton is now considered the zenith of Austrian alpine skiing, and the country’s renown as a ski paradise came partly on the back of this amazing resort. It is connected by state-of-the-art ski lifts and cable cars to nearby villages to form one huge contiguous ski area. The Arlberg massif region in Vorarlberg boasts a vast ski terrain encompassing 300 kilometres (186 miles) of slopes.</p>

<p>The sport is certainly challenging here, and there are plenty of off-piste opportunities for those who want to test themselves, with about 200 kilometres of backcountry terrain beckoning thrill-seekers. The adrenaline will certainly be pumping on many of the exhilarating descents, not least the Kandahar run on Galzig. The views are stunning, and the well-maintained slopes provide top-notch exercise for much of the winter.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ski stars</h3>



<p>Arlberg boasts three top-notch ski resorts: St Anton – St Christoph – Stuben, which are connected by cable car; its over-the-valley neighbour Lech – Oberlech – Zürs; and Warth-Schröcken. St Anton’s epic Run of Fame is a spectacular marathon taking in the entire Ski Arlberg area. As the longest ski circuit in the Alps, covering 85 kilometres and an altitude difference of 18,000 metres (59,055 feet), it takes the best part of a day to complete and traverses three mountain passes – Arlberg, Flexen and Hochtannberg. The route pays homage to the many ski pioneers, athletes and movie stars who have popularised these slopes over the years, leaving their indelible footprints in the snow.</p>

<p>Indeed, Ski Arlberg has so much to offer for all levels of skiers. There are endless signposted runs, ultra-modern cable cars, fantastic powder-snow slopes, and practice areas for young skiers and beginners, as well as a multitude of sports facilities, from fun parks to carving areas to race courses.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Food with a view</h3>



<p>Part of the joy of skiing in Austria are the scrumptious culinary delights served in the local restaurants and huts, and St Anton offers some of the best. Perched at 2,085 metres and billed as one of the highest gourmet restaurants in Europe, Verwallstube is worth a visit for the amazing mountain views alone. In the winter months, it opens daily for lunch, while weekly evening candlelight dinners accompanied by piano music are a special experience. Meticulously arranged dishes infused with uplifting flavours range from bouillabaisse to beautifully tender veal cheeks braised in red wine. Truffle mash adds additional charm to the meal.</p>

<p>On the edge of St Anton village, Museum Restaurant-Café is another excellent choice with a wonderful ambience. Housed in the St Anton Museum, this charming wood-panelled venue serves Austrian cuisine and offers private dining and vegetarian and vegan options. It has the most succulent Tyrolean beef, lamb or trout on a menu prepared with both creativity and tradition. Try the winter salad with caramelised nuts, pear and smoked goose breast, then treat yourself to the mouth-watering crème brûlée.</p>

<p>The fine international cuisine and excellent wine list at Hazienda, located in the basement of the four-star M3 Hotel, draw in gourmet skiers. Superb pasta dishes and veal are a forte. Classic Austrian restaurant Fuhrmannstube by Buffy is a cosy hideaway, great for tucking into venison stew, traditional dumplings known as knödel, or copious helpings of strudel.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Après adventuring</h3>



<p>St Anton is noted the world over for its après-ski options – think crazy, fun-filled drinking houses brimming with raucous revellers on a high from the day’s excursions on the glorious Alpine slopes. At the legendary MooserWirt, which has been opening its doors to boisterous skiers since 1989, expect loud Austrian music and party-goers dancing on tables, sweating in their salopettes. To the backdrop of non-stop après-ski hits mixed by famous DJs, guzzle down a wide variety of beers to your heart’s content – the venue reportedly gets through a staggering 5,000 litres a day. It’s also a wonderful place to make new friends for the following day’s skiing, but make sure you leave your skis in a safe, easy-to-find spot as you will need them to get back down the slope after your drinking games.</p>

<p>There are plenty of other notable après-ski hangouts. Sennhütte has a lovely sunlit terrace affording superb mountain views. Tables bounce with skiers swaying with delight to local bands playing country or rock music designed to get the party in full schnapps-happy swing. Just to its north is Heustadl, another hotspot usually bursting at the seams. Located near the end of run no. 50, it offers live music to 6 pm.</p>

<p>Billed as St Anton’s oldest après-ski haunt, Krazy Kanguruh – owned by Austrian skiing legend Mario Matt – is a lively slopeside bar with a great terrace overlooking the village. It is usually loud, fun and jam-packed from 5 pm to closing around 8 pm. Enjoy the moment as you swig intoxicating tequila and consume quality nosh before getting back on your skis to slide gracefully down to the valley.</p>

<p>The villages of Lech and Zürs are linked to St Anton over the mountains but are still relatively isolated. With distance comes exclusivity, and Zürs, in particular, has garnered a reputation as one of the most renowned winter sports resorts in the Alps, beloved by the well-heeled and international glitterati.</p>

<p>Austria has many splendid ski areas aside from Ski Arlberg. The season at Ischgl in Tyrol normally runs until early May since it sits at 2,872 metres above sea level and offers 239 kilometres of pistes, with some as long as 11km. It provides skiing for all levels, and the more accomplished aficionados will be attracted by its daunting slopes of 70% gradient or steeper.</p>

<p>Silvretta Arena ski resort comprises Ischgl and the Swiss village of Samnaun in the Grisons, which has the added advantage of being a duty-free zone. The Smuggler’s Trail, straggling the Austria-Switzerland border, allows skiers and snowboarders to explore old smuggling routes. The season here starts on 30 November 2024 when English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding performs at the Top of the Mountain Opening Concert at Silvretta car park against the unforgettable backdrop of the Tyrolean mountains. Another bonus is the foodie’s paradise of Ischgl’s many restaurants.</p>

<p>Schladming-Dachstein in Styria has some of Austria’s most impressive mountains for skiing and a 230km-expanse of slopes. A high altitude ensures reliable snow coverage at SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental in Tyrol, which has had the distinction of being voted the best ski resort in the world on several occasions. Blessed with wide pistes and panoramic views, Tyrol’s Zillertal Arena has the claim to fame for hosting one of the country’s longest descents. It also offers plentiful après-ski entertainment.</p>

<p>Designed around an illustration of a seedling and its roots (‘racines’ in French), the cascading tasting menu showcases the finest seasonal ingredients and celebrates the rich culinary traditions of the South of France. Nestled in the heart of Hong Kong, this petite restaurant garnered a well-deserved Michelin star this year, solidifying its status as a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts.</p>

<p>“I want our guests to feel a sense of comfort in our dining room, to relax and enjoy each dish and the elements we’ve created to reflect the autumn season,” says executive chef and co-owner Romain Dupeyre, who was raised in Nice. His co-chef, co-owner and best friend, Adrien Castillo, was a fellow apprentice at La Chèvre d’Or on the French Riviera nearly 20 years ago.</p>

<p>The six-course dinner tasting menu begins and ends with a humble vegetable reimagined in unexpected ways. The opening act, Camus Artichoke, is an inventive take on traditional duck-and-walnut salade Landaise. It expertly balances earthy notes with the vibrant flavours of southern France, creating a delightful medley that awakens the senses.</p>

<p>“I love to put a unique twist and artistry to each dish to spark curiosity and take our guests on a discovery of new tastes and textures,” says Chef Dupeyre. “I hope to ignite a sense of excitement and wonder about the culinary possibilities of the ingredients, and so far, it’s been very well received. Guests are often surprised when this dish is presented, because it’s not how they would have had it before, but they’re open to it, and delighted by it.”</p>

<p>The third course is a particular standout: Mediterranean red mullet, which pays homage to the classic bouillabaisse. The dual preparation of the fish is a bold culinary statement. For the first, a cold dish, the mullet is air-dried for three days, intensifying its flavour while imparting a delicate texture. Cured in a blend of salt, sugar, lemon and orange juice, it’s both refreshing and rich. The second preparation sees the fish pan-fried to perfection, the subtle crispiness complementing the tender flesh.</p>

<p>Brittany pigeon and Brandt beef from California, both elevated to new heights as main-course choices, are faultless. The pigeon, paired with figs at their seasonal peak, presents a perfect harmony of sweetness and rich, savoury flavours. Meanwhile, the ribeye flank, kissed by the smoky essence of a binchotan grill, embodies the heartiness of the season. The beef is enhanced by a selection of seasonal ingredients that deepen its flavour profile.</p>

<p>Following the cheese course served with house-made sorbet, Jerusalem artichoke takes centre stage, defying traditional dessert expectations. The chefs skilfully transform this root vegetable into a sweet finale that captures the essence of autumn. It’s an unexpected twist that not only surprises the palate but also leaves a lasting impression, marking a memorable end to the meal.</p>

<p>Complete with a root chandelier and a dining countertop engraved with the Chinese characters for prosperity and power, Racines provides irrefutable assurance that rustic dining is not and should not be at all intimidating.
