It is nearing 1 pm at the Mandarin Oriental Tamar Suite. Peter Cheung has long since arisen and absorbed himself in the morning rituals of the modern CEO: email, energised with his go-to coffee, and in this instance, employing a full glam team to ready him for our cover shoot. He is a person who uses your first name in conversation. When he walks into a public space and sits down, no one scatters. He is very approachable, and one can easily sense the warmth and vibrancy of his personality, and his fondness for all things luxurious and glamorous.

“Hi! Nice to meet you all!” he cries, without glancing up, as he greets us midway through typing an email on his phone. Once done, he looks at us immediately, winning us over with a sincere smile of apology, and continues his breezy welcome: “Nice to meet you all. Do you like what I’m wearing? I’ve purposely chosen these looks for you guys. Where do we start?”

The man who is Peter Cheung Asia, the strategic marketing and communications consultancy, had a very colourful childhood, as he would describe it. The youngest of six children and the only boy in the Cheung legacy – he was born and raised in Hong Kong until his mother relocated to Victoria, British Columbia, where he became a competitive junior tennis player; at 16 he was ranked in the top 10 of under 18-year-olds in the province.

“It was my childhood dream to be a professional tennis player,” says Cheung. “Whenever we were back in Hong Kong, our parents would send us to the Hong Kong Country Club daily from 9 am to 9 pm. I fantasised I was an international tennis player, training at the Club by day and back to a five- star hotel at night. I really enjoyed my suite life.”

Safe to say, Peter is literally in the wealth of biographies and hagiography.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cheer Leaders</h3>



His early teenage years, including being picked up nightly by his posse in a motorcade of chauffeur-driven cars to visit multiple hotspots, afforded him a glimpse of the luxury lifestyle. “Being here every summer in the most decadent times of the late ’80s and early ’90s, it became my mission to return permanently to the only place that I could only live that dream life – Hong Kong,” he says.

Once back, early stints in fashion merchandising and media led to senior PR roles at Sotheby’s, Dior, Versace and Van Cleef &amp; Arpels. His father, a successful entrepreneur in the insurance field, was his most trusted adviser, even though the paths they trod in life couldn’t have been more different.

“I sought his advice always and I never made a professional move without discussing it with him,” says Cheung. “And he always said to me, you know what? You help the brands, you help your bosses, why don&#8217;t you help yourself and be your own boss? He was definitely my biggest inspiration to start my own business.”

On the other hand, his mother was his inspiration for fashion and style. His appreciation of clothes, jewellery and aesthetics from a very young age stemmed from her. “She had this amazing personality, character, beauty and style in that Shanghainese chic of a bygone era,” he shares.

“My parents, together with my five sisters and my friends have shaped me into what I am today. Shoutout to you all!” he cheers from the suite’s velvet couch.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Outside the Box</h3>



Peter still sometimes channels the kid from Canada that he once was: slightly wide-eyed and a little surprised to find himself as a marketing trailblazer in the region, more influential than most nine-to-five bankers. He defends his record as a creative leader in his own right and he elaborates on how he deals with his rivals and competitors.

“If my father did not put it on the table, I don’t know what I would be doing today. He made me realise I was in a unique position with my background, experience and expertise in that I worked in multiple product segments,” he explains. “This position is what I think sets Peter Cheung Asia apart from traditional agencies.

A natural affinity for beautiful things and love of the natural world makes him a credible messenger for a values-led company. Even as Cheung has reshaped the marketing business, he is reluctant to supply a list of his own creative achievements with the company he launched in 2015. These include steering clients in the fields of fashion, jewellery and watches, expanding into the hospitality industry (maybe inspired by the prodigal son of hotels), media, art and culture and education, and offering skills and time to several nonprofit organisations and charities.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Power Forward</h3>



His wavy silver hair is neatly maintained – oftentimes blown by the wind as he poses for the camera. He is wearing an all-black ensemble, with glittering studs and sequins from top to toe. His perception of himself, with the position he has achieved in life, remains anything but simple.

“I’ve been described as a lot of things, but probably normal is not among those. I love having ‘crazy’ ideas. What is most exciting is having an original idea, something very abstract in the beginning, and to be able to hone it, work with it, shape it, edit, add or subtract elements, evolve it, looking at it comprehensively from every angle, and then to be able to launch this idea, by now a solid strategic plan, put it in motion with maximum impact and energy, with hopefully successful results and impeccable timing, and to see something concrete come into fruition,” he says, all in one breath with a deep sigh at the end.

“Was that too much? In life, there’s nothing too much. As they say, there’s always more to life.”

And the future is complicated. Today, Peter Cheung Asia is a dominant marketing company in Hong Kong, having emerged from the pandemic relatively unscathed and prosperous, and also at a crossroads: perpetually on the brink of the discovery that will change the PR dynamic again, while at the same time fending off constant challenges to its existing business.

“We don’t really look back very much at all in history,” he says. “We’re always focused on the future and trying to feel like that, we’re very much at that starting line where you can really dream and have big ideas that are not constrained by the past.”

Clearly, as the visionary that he is, Cheung has the knack of turning doubters into followers and further emboldening his daring creativity through an innate curiosity about, and connection with, people and society. As we near the conclusion of our time together, an oscillating net of polite communications folks leading the way, he exchanges hellos, sorrys and thank yous with whomever we pass and are temporarily blocked because of our photoshoot. He makes this a habit, always acknowledging the goodness in people.

We pop the cork on a bottle of Champagne and raise a glass to a smooth afternoon’s work. His next move? Anywhere the wind blows.

Peter Piper: PR visionary Peter Cheung is entrusted by the brands to lead them out of the box

Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental celebrated its 60th anniversary last month and the luxury hotel remains one of the world’s finest. Since opening in 1963, then known simply as The Mandarin, this graceful building has played host to thousands of guests and remains close in the affections of locals who patronise its fine bars and restaurants daily – many of whom have a particular fondness for afternoon tea in the iconic Clipper Lounge.

Greg Liddell, General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, hails the property for having a unique place in the hearts of Hong Kong people and many loyal visitors from overseas. “It was launched as the first luxury hotel on Hong Kong Island in 1963,” he says. “It is where local families have enjoyed special celebrations and where business travellers have held significant meetings and negotiated their deals.”

He believes the hotel is the epitome of contemporary luxury combined with Oriental heritage and remains “a much-loved address for those seeking an exclusive sanctuary in the heart of the city”. He adds: “It is the quintessential ‘home away from home’ for discerning leisure and business travellers alike.”



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Initial doubts</h3>



With the benefit of hindsight, it is amazing to think that, way back in July 1960 when the idea of building a ‘first-class hotel’ in place of the soon-to-be- demolished Queen’s Building was first proposed at a board meeting of the Hong Kong Land Investment and Agency Co. Ltd, there were many who thought the idea was crazy. A passionate advocate was Hugh Barton, then Chairman of the board, who showed infectious enthusiasm for the idea. According to a book written by Nigel Cameron to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the hotel, titled simply The Mandarin, the project was referred to as ‘Barton’s folly’ in certain circles.

Of course, it is now clear the timing of the project could not have been better. Hong Kong’s economy accelerated over the ensuing 20 years and visitor numbers to the territory skyrocketed, from 315,000 in 1963 to 2.8 million in 1983, as Hong Kong transformed itself into one of the most important commercial centres in the world.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Great reputation</h3>



Demand for the luxurious services and accommodation The Mandarin had to offer exploded, helped by the fact that it was quickly establishing a fine reputation. Indeed, just four years after opening, in 1967, Fortune magazine cited The Mandarin as among the 11 great hotels of the world.

Revealingly, this is part of Fortune’s definition of a great hotel: “[It] must be ready for everything, it is not enough that most rooms are faultless; all of them must be, in service as well as in décor and furnishings. It is not enough that the food and wine are impeccable; they must also be served impeccably, even when the restaurant is unexpectedly crowded.”

Every detail was carefully considered during the design stage of The Mandarin. For instance, the hotel lobby was designed to give arriving guests the feeling of luxurious use of space. Many visitors regularly comment on its sense of old-world charm and superb service standards. Its rooms and suites offer interrupted views overlooking the magnificent harbour.

“The hotel is a culinary destination of nine outstanding restaurants and bars with an award-winning spa and wellness facilities; it is truly an urban oasis in the heart of Hong Kong,” says Liddell.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">High service standards</h3>



The Mandarin spawned the Mandarin Oriental chain of luxury hotels that now spans the world. Liddel says high service standards are fundamental, with every client whim actioned: “What differentiates the hotel is our colleagues and their passion to deliver exemplary service to each and every one of our guests. It is our mission to delight and inspire our guests at every opportunity; every need is anticipated as we aspire to exceed our guest expectations.”

There have been numerous upgrades and improvements to the hotel over the past 60 years. It has been ahead of the curve in some areas, such as incorporating an elegant swimming pool. Indeed, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has been awarded the World’s Best Hotel Spa Brand for the past two years.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Constant improvements</h3>



The hotel never rests on its laurels, according to Liddell: “We strive for constant improvement and innovation, as it is inevitably essential for hotels to stay competitive and relevant in the market.”

He revealed that in 2021 the hotel undertook extensive renovations for Man Wah, the much-loved Chinese restaurant that has been delighting diners since 1968. They also opened The Aubrey, offering an eccentric izakaya experience, which is now ranked at number 17 in the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars.

“On the hotel’s 23rd floor overlooking Statue Square garden and the surrounding Hong Kong harbour and cityscape, we have also introduced a brand-new club lounge, The Mandarin Club, to provide a luxurious all-day retreat where our guests will enjoy a host of exclusive privileges and bespoke services including an array of culinary delights from breakfast, afternoon tea to evening cocktails,” he adds.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ongoing celebrations</h3>



The hotel has been hosting special events and initiatives to commemorate its anniversary. ‘The Mandarin at 60 Exhibit’ is a permanent historical archive in the East Lobby for public viewing. They welcomed four two-star Michelin chefs from their sister properties as well as a number of bartenders from Asia’s 50 Best Bars, who performed guest shifts at The Aubrey. The Mandarin Spa took the opportunity to launch new brand partnerships and bespoke treatments, and a limited-edition chinaware collection was crafted and is available for purchase.

“We have also launched The Mandarin spirit in collaboration with Two Moons Distillery, a local zero- waste distillery equipped with its own composting machine, a testament to the hotel’s dedication to sustainability,” says Liddell.

The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong has partnered with numerous local charities in a bid to give back to the community, and staff have delivered thousands of hours of community services. The 60th anniversary gala celebration, which took place on 26th October, was attended by longstanding guests over the generations.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">On a roll</h3>



Liddell revealed photographs of guests arriving at the glittering party were interpreted live by an AI artist. These real-time portraits, produced in conjunction with Sir Peter Blake and the Studio of Art &amp; Commerce, were painted in a style inspired by traditional Chinese ink calligraphy and compiled into a celebratory collage. The ‘AI on Canvas’ project will be featured on the side of local trams for all to enjoy.

Watching the&nbsp;Nutcracker&nbsp;is an annual Christmas tradition, especially for lovers of ballet.&nbsp;From December 18 to 20 at Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre,&nbsp;the beloved&nbsp;story&nbsp;and outstanding performance&nbsp;of the Nutcracker&nbsp;​returns to the city for&nbsp;the family to&nbsp;enjoy. Any restaurant with two Michelin stars under its belt would be happy to sit back and rest on its laurels. Not so Amber. Yes, as the city&#8217;s gourmands would be well aware, culinary legend Richard Ekkebus&#8217; brainchild, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental&#8217;s iconic restaurant and repeated winner at Asia&#8217;s 50 Best Restaurants Award shut down seven months ago to renovate and reinvent itself.

Now, the restaurant has just reopened its doors in an updated and upgraded avatar – and we were honoured to be among the first guests to have been invited to the newly-reopened cuisinary. Stepping into Amber&#8217;s renovated space, it&#8217;s clear from the very start that it&#8217;s not just a cosmic change, Creative Director Richard Ekkebus has completely overhauled and reshaped the restaurant&#8217;s DNA. This reimagining is not only limited to the furniture and the furnishings, it has extended to its state-of-the-art kitchen, the extensive wine experience and, of course, its menu.

We start with Homemade Silken Tofu, Heirloom Tomatoes, Salted Sakura and Virgin Almond Oil. A disarmingly simple dish, its sweet tomatoes pair perfectly with the savoury sakura leaves and the tofu. The lacto-fermented jus makes the dish even more healthy, soothing our stomachs and piquing the appetite. Testifying to the team&#8217;s attention to minute details, even the bowl in which the tofu is served is especially made from rice grain, so that the tofu doesn&#8217;t wiggle in the bowl, making the experience even more seamless for the diner.

A surprise awaited us for the next dish. We were ushered into the kitchen to try the Kegani, Palmheart, Hygernatsu and Coriander. A light appetiser with horsehair crab (kegani), palmheart and coriander, the dish is tied together by the citrusy hyuganatsu, a Japanese fruit that is similar to grapefruit. It&#8217;s a creation that&#8217;s close to Ekkebus&#8217;s heart and, after just one bite, we could tell why. The sweetness of the meat, the slight crunchiness of the heart of palm and the citrusy notes of the fruit combine in one harmonious explosion of taste in our mouth.

The other memorable dishes of the night were the Pointed Cabbage, Shiitake Mushroom, Button Mushroom and Virgin Black Sesame Oil, and the Teardrop Peas, Pomelo, Cuttlefish and Wakame, both healthy and nourishing dishes where the each ingredient – though a hero in its own right – doesn&#8217;t grab attention individually but rather works in a simpatico relationship to elevate the dish altogether. This is not fine-dining at its most decadent, it&#8217;s luxury at its most discreet.

However, it is in its desserts that Amber allows itself a touch of extravagance, with the standout being the Sake Lees, Raspberry, Puffed Black Rice and Rice Milk. While the other dishes so far had looked subtle, basking in their unobtrusive goodness, this dessert looked and tasted much more flamboyant in comparison. With the raspberry crêpes being delightfully tangy, the puffed rice crispy and the sake lees mildly sweet, it was as balanced as dessert can hope to be.
It is this emphasis on balance and quality that sets Amber version 2.0 apart. Where chef Ekkebus could have designed an overly opulent menu, he has chosen to keep things simple, perhaps because it is in simplicity that his vision shines through.
