Electric Vehicles (EV) and hybrid cars have been significantly expanding over the last decade, especially with supportive policies and technology advancement, according to the International Energy Agency. In fact, a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance stated 58 percent of global passenger vehicle sales in 2040 will come from electric vehicles. With the Hong Kong government actively supporting the adoption of EV cars throughout the city and a wider range of options available on the market, is it time to switch over to electric cars?

A larger network of charging stations 
The local government has, for several years, taking an active role in supporting the adoption of electric cars in the city through tax reductions, financial incentives and more importantly laying out infrastructures for charging stations across the city. In 2019, The Chief Executive announced the preparation of a $2 billion pilot subsidy scheme to promote the installation of an EV charging network that will be made easily accessible to EV car owners in private residential car parks as well as public parking spaces.&nbsp;

Better for the environment

More Economical 
One of the biggest reservations most consumers have when considering an electric car is the mileage. The Tesla Model 3 currently boasts the longest range among other EV cars on the market, covering 320miles on a full six to nine-hour charge. In contrast, conventional fuel-pumped cars go between 360 to 480 miles on a full tank, needless to mention that refuelling also takes less time. But Hong Kong also has the most expensive auto-fuel retail price in the world, according to the Consumer Council. It costs $17 per litre to pump gas while charging an EV car is free.&nbsp;
However, if road trips out of the city is a priority, hybrid cars offer the best of both words covering a longer range fueled by reusable energy, and gas as a reserve. Otherwise, there are about 3,351 EV charging stations across the city, at refuelling stations, public parking spaces as well as private residential car parks (one within every 10km).

A growing range of options 
Over the years the number of electric vehicles and hybrid cars entering the market has steadily increased, offering an optimistic future for the development and advancement of EV cars. No longer exclusive to Tesla, the industry now features some of the biggest names in the motor industry including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Porsche and Volkswagen, to name a few. Rolls Royce had also declared its commitment to manufacturing a line of EV cars, skipping on hybrids completely, and iPhone and Macintosh technology company Apple also recently announced that it will be rolling out an EV car in 2024.
As of right now, Tesla remains in the lead, offering models with the longest range and quickest acceleration on the market, however that will soon change with more hybrid sedans and utility EVs expected to come out of the woodworks with improved specifications, performance, charging time, and even more luxurious exterior and interior layouts.&nbsp;

Save on cost 
Though the cost of purchasing an EV car can set you back anywhere between $500,000 to $1 million, the cost of maintenance and servicing will save buyers money in the long run. Conventional cars consist of several parts that often break down or need regular servicing or maintenance, whereas EV cars only need to be serviced twice a year and have their brake fluid replaced every 5 years. Though the battery packs are the most expensive part to maintaining ((between five to fifteen thousand) an EV car, most battery packs come with an eight-year (or 100,000miles) warranty and take about 17 years to die (or&nbsp; 200,000miles).&nbsp;
So, is it time to switch to electric cars? 
There are at least 12,000 registered electric cars in the city and despite the initial upfront cost of switching over to an electric car is high, the need for maintenance, servicing and downtime are much less and more convenient than conventional cars. Saving at least $5,000 per year, not including the government’s incentives. And with a wider range of options to hit the market in the next few years, and a more widespread network of EV chargers in gross spaces, both public and private residential areas across the city to accommodate the demands of private electric car owners, there is very little downside to a sustainable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly move as to switch from conventional gas-powered cars to its electric alternative.&nbsp;

Undoubtedly, the exotic look of the Mercedes-Benz: VISION AVTR is only a minor part of what makes this automobile such a visionary design. VISION AVTR: Mercedes-Benz unveils car of the future at CES 2020

Known for its superb customer service, German carmaker <a href="https://www.mercedes-benz.com">Mercedes-Benz</a> continues to delight customers not just by delivering the finest of luxury automobiles but with delicious fine-dining fare as well. The innovative pop-up <a href="//www.gafencushop.com/tag/mercedes-me-store/">Mercedes me Store</a>, which opened last year, has continued to wow Hongkongers with innovative culinary treats within this dynamic space, which has been used for an array of lifestyle events as well as corporate functions.
So, when we got word that the Mercedes me Store had launched a new lunch menu, we immediately took the chance to see what had additions had been made to its already-impressive menu.

Upon walking up the stairs to its second floor, we were seated to an almost-empty dining area. However, within minutes of our arrival, every table on the floor filled up. The dimmed ambient lighting and busy chatter amongst the guests matched with the rainy-day sky outside, making it easy to forget that only half the day was complete, and leaving us in a boldly after-work mood.

Excited to try out Head Chef Joaquin Elizondo&#8217;s newest dishes, we began the three-course meal with the Whipped Sweet Potato with Sichuan chickpeas and home made lavash. Every bite was savoured as the hummus-like spread was ably paired with crisp pita bread bites, delighting us with a creamy Middle East-inspired treat. &nbsp;

Next to arrive was the&nbsp;Wagyu Striploin, smoked with spice rub and placed atop abéarnaise sauce – a presentation so wonderous that even the vegetarian at ourtable remarked: &#8220;that looks incredible&#8221;. And so it was, with the steak&#8217;s insides remaining wholly succulent despite our &#8216;well-done&#8217; request – a true feat indeed. Meanwhile, the béarnaise sauce worked its charm as the extra bit of flavour to make the dish a must-try.

Last, but certainly not least, we opted for the Homemade Carrot Cake – moist and flavourful, but not overly spiced the cake offered finely chopped walnuts at just the right size. The icing was especially memorable as just the right amount of sugar was used, so one could truly appreciate the taste of the cream cheese.
With this innovatively re-engineered new lunch menu, the Mercedes me Store brings a delightful new culinary treat to Central&#8217;s already-bustling lunchtime scene, impressing us so much that we&#8217;d happily make it a weekly experience.

Lunchtime Fuel: New lunch menu at Mercedes me Store delights Central crowd

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz takes customer service to the next level with its new Mercedes me Store, an urban boutique bang in the middle of Central. Through this rather innovative ‘concept store’, Mercedes offers a versatile space that can be used for all kinds of lifestyle, cultural, or corporate activities, as well as for a variety of retail experiences.

Venture upstairs from this boutique space, though, and yet another surprise awaits the guests! Mercedes has rightly surmised that no retail experience can be complete without a gastronomic element in it. With that in mind, the Mercedes me Store now offers an all-day dining option for guests, from breakfast to late-night dinner and drinks.
Carefully crafted by Maximal Concepts’ Executive Chef Russell Doctrove and Head Chef Joaquin Elizondo, the menu brings together the best of Asian and European culinary influences. Chefs Doctrove and Elizondo seem equally comfortable with their raw and cooked dish presentations – resulting in an eclectic mix of casual, modern cuisine that’s meant to be shared.

Eager to put the chefs’ skills to test, we started with the appetisers and were pleasantly surprised by the wide range. From the cured beef carpaccio (HK$169), whose decadent truffle crème is matched by pickled tangy mushrooms, to the ramen organic egg (HK$65), which offers a mouthful of delectable sea urchin, there’s something here for every palate.

The large plates had a lot to live up to after the sumptuous small plate-tastings that we did, and they surpassed our expectations! We particularly recommend the spanner crab linguine (HK$360) for its well-seasoned perfection and the Australian Wagyu sirloin (HK$380) for its crispy meatiness and the generous sprinkling of fried shallots on top – a change from the usual sirloin offerings at most Hong Kong restaurants.

The drinks menu too more than matched up to our expectations with its homage to Asian and European influences. The Green Hell (HK$120) – a classic vodka-based cocktail with an Asian twist – particularly caught our attention. Those looking to go alcohol-free will also be spoilt for choice, with our vote going firmly to King Pin (HK$80).
It seems that with Mercedes me Store, Mercedes-Benz is going all out to please all its customers, no matter how different their individual tastes!

Two weeks ago, German luxury auto brand Mercedes launched its latest Mercedes me store in Central. Built on a haus (home in German) style principle of service, the new venue provides a home away from home for loyal Mercedes customers.

Visitors to the new 500sqm venue will be greeted by an entrance living room, a boutique retail area in addition to housing the latest luxury car models in its garage area. To go the extra mile, Mercedes is also offering an all-day dining location on site, which will offer guests tasty treats and cocktails from morning to night.

Earlier this week, motor enthusiasts were treated to a first look of the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s popular <a href="https://www.mercedes-benz.com.hk/content/hongkong/mpc/mpc_hongkong_website/enng/home_mpc/passengercars/home/new_cars/models/v-class/v-class.html">V-Class</a> people carrier. This newly launched model, dubbed the V-Class Exclusive Edition, was personally unveiled by Volker Mornhinweg, Global Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Andreas Binder, President and CEO of the manufacturer’s Hong Kong operations.

While the V-Class Exclusive Edition retains the same engine as its ‘regular’ 2018 brethren (a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine producing 221bhp and 350Nm of torque), it’s clearly pushing the envelope in terms of luxury and comfort.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in the spacious interiors. The front-row Captain Seats come with three massage programme functions and individualised temperature controls. Meanwhile, back-seat passengers can enjoy panoramic views through the generously expansive sunroof, store drinks in the centre console’s in-built refrigerator and enjoy fantastic beats thanks, to the Burmester surround sound system.

Mercedes-Benz, by and large, makes excellent cars. But for all their comfort and technical wizardry, modern Mercs are rather lacking in character. Technical perfection and inoffensive, mainstream styling leave the cars bereft of distinguishing characteristics for one to grow fond of.
One member of the Benz family that still has a bit of personality, though – the unapologetically upright, wilfully different G-Class off-roader. Designed in the 1970s as an off-road military vehicle, the G’s slab-sided exterior has changed little over the intervening decades, maintaining the look and feel of no-nonsense parade ground rectitude.

In a world full of casual SUVs pretending to be off-road vehicles, the G550 stands out like a drill sergeant at a yoga retreat. Designed with scarcely a rounded surface in sight, its retro shape is highly distinctive, leaving little chance of becoming lost in a crowded car park.
While almost all modern 4x4s would struggle with the least bit of off-road driving, the G-Class backs up its stern, outdoorsy appearance with military grade engineering fit for the wildest stretch of wilderness.

Beam axles in the front and rear, combined with 210mm ground clearance and permanent four-wheel drive, make the G550 just about the most capable off-road performer money can buy. Power is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox with either high range for road driving or low range for dirty work. The car can even switch between gearbox modes without coming to a halt – simply engage neutral, let the speed drop below 15kph and select low range.
Unusually, even for hardcore off-road vehicles, the muddy Merc also has three locking differentials: centre, rear and front. These offer enthusiastic cross-country drivers all the tools they need to get into and out of especially unwelcoming terrain.

With short overhangs front and rear, the Merc can take on especially severe slopes without scraping its nose or tail. It can even keep occupants’ feet dry while fording water up to 60cm deep. It’s here – down in the mud – where the car’s personality really shines through, especially for those unaccustomed to driving dedicated off-roaders.
Mercedes concedes that only a tiny proportion of G-Class drivers will ever take the car off the smooth confines of paved roads, but driving on highways is no less exciting.
Indeed, the G550 is bursting with restless energy. The tall suspension that’s so supple on uneven surfaces has nothing to do on a nice, flat stretch of tarmac, so it gets busy rolling this way and that. The slightest cornering force induces body roll, making for an entertaining drive, even at low speeds.

The steering adds to this sense of vitality. The G’s recirculating ball steering system is built to insulate the driver from the shocks and knocks encountered while rolling through a forest. On a smooth surface, that forgiving steering results in zero feedback from tyres to fingertips.
With 4.0 litres, two turbo chargers and 310kW, the G550 accelerates respectably well for such a large car. The sprint to 100kph takes around six seconds, but there’s little point in driving the G fast on the road. The body roll is too pronounced, and the steering too vague.
While mechanical fundamentals may preclude a relaxing experience on the road, there are some techno-goodies to help make life with the G easier. Bi-xenon headlights help one see what’s up ahead, and blind spot cameras reveal perils approaching from the rear.
Fuel consumption is predictably high. At well over two tonnes, that’s a lot of mass to move – not to mention three differentials constantly sapping power before it reaches the road, all of which is wrapped in a body shell with the aero-efficiency of a brick.
Although austerely old-fashioned on the outside, the G’s interior is modern and luxurious. Mercedes-Benz’s Comand info-tainment system – accessed through a 200mm touchscreen – comes as standard, as does a Harman Kardon sound system, 40GB hard drive and smartphone connectivity.

On the downside, the G has a narrow interior, with the rear seat only wide enough to accommodate two adults side by side. The rear luggage space, too, is a touch cramped.
All this may sound horrifying to drivers raised with the notion that pin-sharp steering and silky ride are the holy grails of road transport, but this misses the point. The G-Class isn’t meant to be mainstream; it’s an alternative to the bland ranks of modern SUVs.
Yes, the driving experience is unconventional and restless, but it’s also engaging and entertaining, arguably as rewarding as any high-speed track day missile. It’s a different kind of fun – a kind accessible at socially responsible speeds.&nbsp;
Sadly, this charming exception to Mercedes uniformity is not long for this world. The forces of boredom are conspiring to iron out its quirks, with a new replacement G-Class under development.
So if you want something unusual – or perhaps a car with a personality to match your own nonconformist spirit – now’s your chance.

G-Class review: A modern Merc with personality

Mercedes Benz opted for Victoria Harbour as the ideal setting for the Hong Kong launch of its four new S-class models. With riders on the 60-metre high Observatory Wheel looking on, some 800 specially-invited guests enjoyed lavish entertainment in an exclusive marquee as the high-end German motor marque paraded the latest additions to its range.
With the spotlight on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class models, a DJ, a dance troupe and an orchestral ensemble did their very best to convey the level of technological innovation and sensorial comfort embodied in these new vehicles. Of particular interest to local motor enthusiasts, of course, was the newly Cantonese-friendly Linguatronic voice control system, while the level of autonomous on-road assistance that comes as standard clearly takes us a step or two closer to driverless cars joining the Hong Kong contraflow.
Introducing the new range, Andreas Binder, President and Chief Executive of Mercedes Benz Hong Kong, said: “For me, one of the absolute highlights of these new models is the Magic Body Control system, which scans the road in front and adjusts the damping of each wheel ahead of any bump. Truly magical.”
