<p>Standing in the airy foyer of her Residence Bel-Air home, Deborah Valdez-Hung looks exactly like she does in the Netflix reality show Bling Empire: New York – better, actually. With her signature configuration of bronzer, highlighter, contouring, full red lips and skin-tight designer garb, the media star is a natural standout from the handful of staff in the room, or in any room, in fact. Surprisingly, she is softer and daintier in three dimensions than she is in two. If anything is true of Valdez-Hung, it is her endless talent for optical illusions and posing for the camera.</p>

<p>“Let’s get straight right into it?” she asks jokingly. “Welcome. Come right in. Feel free to roam around the house and see which location we should work on for the photos. Everything here is inspired by surrealism and avant-garde.”</p>

<p>She leads the way to a living room containing all things maximalist, from the blue dangling light fixtures to the red velvet walls and unconventionally heart-shaped couches. All these reflect the passionate nature the jetsetter has carried from her humble beginnings in the Mexican desert to the international cities and countries she now calls home from time to time.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Model mission</h3>



<p>A former model herself, Valdez-Hung is the owner and chairperson of Dreamodels, one of the city’s and Asia’s premium full-service modelling agencies. She is also somewhat of an influencer, given her high position and glamorous, fast-paced lifestyle that whisks her to fashion shows and other events across the globe. It appears from her Instagram, which has 772,000 followers to date, that she is still modelling and rarely short of a prominent party or exotic location to pose at.</p>

<p>“I have been interested in fashion since I was young,” she shares while adding another row of bling around her neck. “I did not go to a fashion or design school, but my friends have a fondness for fashion, and from there, I learned about the construction of clothing. However, my interests were beyond that, to be completely honest. That’s why I decided to become a model. It is a very competitive industry and everything changes very fast. You have to be creative and daring.”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Food for thought</h3>



<p>An employee offers a bottle of Coca-Cola in addition to the already massive spread of branded cookies and fresh fruits prepared for the day. One cannot help but wonder, is this a way to counter the famous scene in the pilot episode of Bling Empire: New York where she was accused of not serving any food? Maybe. Or maybe not. She confesses that she just enjoys food and snacking in general, contrary to what the majority of people might think of models’ dietary habits.</p>

<p>Laughing while munching on lychees, she says, nonchalance personified: “I knew this would be brought up. But yes, oh my gosh! I love snacking, especially at midnight.”</p>

<p>She’s svelte and looks fresher and more vulnerable than she does. From the word go, Deborah is unflinchingly honest and not afraid to tackle the heavy stuff. On the other hand, her beauty is both striking and earthy.</p>

<p>“Modelling was also an opportunity for me to travel the world. As a kid, and up to now, I am always amazed on how rich culture can be of a certain country. The modeling stint was offered to me, and looking back, I think it would be silly of me to pass on such great opportunity.&#8221;</p>

<p>Denting momentarily her ultra-glam image, she admits to preferring flats and sneakers to high heels especially since she is always on the go. Despite this assertion, her landscape is one populated by diamonds, private jets and rose bouquets larger than many studio apartments here. It’s a cross-platform, finely tuned optics juggernaut that requires constant maintenance and, she insists justifiably, a lot of work.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Legal aim</h3>



<p>Before the Hong Kong socialite lifestyle and the reality TV fame, Valdez was a practising civil lawyer in Mexico and Europe. </p>

<p>“I decided to be a lawyer as I wanted to help people and to have a bigger purpose in life,” she shares. “But I was also heavily influenced by my father who also has a background in law. Growing up, I was always fascinated listening to his stories and work experiences.”</p>

<p>And in all business situations, her legal training and background is helpful. She launched Dreamodels in 2012, the same year of her marriage to wealthy and flamboyant Hong Kong businessman Stephen Hung, whom she also teasingly dubs as her number-one fan and social media manager.</p>

<p>“Is this pose okay? Try taking it from a top view,” she instructs of her husband who is snapping behind-the-scenes photos of our shoot to post on her Instagram account. “Humour and laughter are parts of our culture in Mexico. I think that&#8217;s what makes us unique.&#8221;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Animal magnetism</h3>



<p>Other cherished members of the household are not to be left out.</p>

<p>“Chiquita! Tan Hermosa!” she coos in her most loving Mexican-Spanish lilt as her dogs scamper over to join her for a photo.</p>

<p>There’s no question that her grueling upkeep routine is working. On the topic of animals, whose rights she strongly advocates, she becomes emphatic. She is a fur mum to two Chihuahuas who own a bedroom and a closet of their own, and she enjoys playing dress up and matching Chanel outfits with them.</p>

<p>“If I have all the means and energy, something I would be ecstatic about doing every day for the rest of my life is to free animals from cages, zoos and labs. I would like to volunteer and dedicate my time in helping a few animal protection associations. Or maybe I&#8217;m being too ambitious? I don&#8217;t know. But I think as humans, we should value and respect animals’ lives. At the end of the day, we are all God’s creations cohabitating on this planet,” she says fervently.</p>

<p>Back in her early days in Mexico, the millennial reality TV star was raised in a Christian family&#8217;s household.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Passion project</h3>



<p>As to the legacy she wants to leave, she is starting a company specialising in accessories and faux-fur coats. “I am giving all my love to my family, friends and pets with this project. They are more than my inspirations in doing all of these things. They are my motivators too,” she says. “Passion and fashion will always be part of my DNA.”</p>

<p>In addition to being a person of influence, Valdez-Hung is without a doubt an “it”: a vector of debate, a media property, a mover of markets, an engine of consumer behaviour, a symbol, a brand, a cipher. As she sits at her home office table discussing work, food, dogs and life, she embodies the glamorous woman her fans aspire to.</p>

Its success has also transformed the life of the star taking the title role – Jenna Ortega – as shown by her Instagram account alone, which registered an extra 10 million followers within 10 days of the series premiere.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It would be unfair, however, to bill the 20-year-old star as an overnight success. Even before her casting in the series, a spin-off of the much-loved Adams Family franchise, she had a resumé longer than that of many performers twice her age. <p>While she first found fame providing voiceovers for children’s programs, including Elena of Avalor and the Disney Channel’s Stuck in the Middle, her career appears to be heading in a different direction, with two of her upcoming projects said to be very much in the horror genre.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>WHY did she not blink while working on Wednesday?&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>Although her blink-free performance in Wednesday wasn’t initially scripted, Director Tim Burton was so taken with the results of an unintentional take that he urged her to fully incorporate the conceit into her portrayal of the character. Ortega, of course, is fully committed to it, with the quirky characteristic going on to almost define the role for critics and viewers alike.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As the character of Wednesday was conceived as singularly strange from the outset, it more than made sense that not blinking was just one of the many things that distinguished her from more everyday mortals. In combination with the character’s full-on, unflinching gaze, it also made the one moment in the series when the character actually smiles genuinely unsettling.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Clearly proud of the way her performance has been received, as well as its significance for others, she says with her tongue firmly in her cheek: “Freak representation is crucial. I think that it’s really nice for such people to be seen in a positive – if disturbing – light.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Well, it just happens to be Wednesday Addams, the full name of her on-screen character. This is perhaps just as well seeing that, in her latest incarnation, Wednesday is seen as having clearly fully embraced her goth persona, and Ortega is a firm believer that her all-black wardrobe played a crucial role in creating the show’s slightly creepy, slightly cooky feel.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Clearly identifying more with this role than perhaps with some of the other characters she has brought to life, Ortega says: “I feel like Wednesday and I like similar things. I’ve always loved button-ups and white collars, for instance, and, of course, I’ve always gravitated towards dark colours – including black nail polish, which has now become very much part of my everyday look.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shonda Rhimes has done it yet again! Creating another widely successful TV series that will have you hooked from beginning to end. Loosely based on the true story of con woman Anna Sorokin, known as Anna Delvey, a Russian-German socialite who posed as a German heiress with a bottomless cashflow and quickly made herself known within New York&#8217;s high society. In 2017, at the age of 26, she made headlines for single handedly defrauding major financial institutions, banks and hotels in New York and was sentenced to four years to 12 years in prison.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Possibly one of the best historical drama to have streamed on Netflix, The Last Kingdom is set during the Danes&#8217; invasion of England. In the first four seasons of the show, we watched Uhtred, the young successor of Saxon earldom,&nbsp;who was captured and adopted by the Danes lead an army to avenge the death of his adoptive father then leading an army to fight for his rightful place as the lord of his birth home Bebbanburg. As a truce between the Saxons and Danes are established towards the closing of season 4, Brida, Uhtred&#8217;s rival and former lover, come face to face once again ending with Brida&#8217;s vow to be Uhtred&#8217;s undoing. In this final season, several years have passed and though Brida is rumored to be dead, Uhtred believes otherwise. If you haven&#8217;t seen the first four seaosons, now will be a good time to catch up before closigng the book on this hugely successful show.</p>

<p><em>Tick, Tick BOOM!</em> is an appropriate enough title for the latest movie from ex-<em>Spider-Man</em> star Andrew Garfield as, despite its protracted and highly-public production countdown, no-one seems entirely sure as when it’s likely to explode on to screens. What we do know is it’s a musical, Netflix has bagged the broadcast rights and, apparently, it has to be contractually released before the end of the current year. While waiting for firmer tidings of the likely timings and critical reception, it’s the ideal opportunity to while away an idle moment or two uncovering Five Things You Almost Certainly Didn’t Know About Andrew Garfield…</p>

<p><strong>One:</strong> Unlike most actors who are born out in the sticks and then head Hollywood-wards. Garfield was actually born within posturing distance of Tinseltown, before promptly decamping some 8,800 kilometres northeast to Epsom, an English market town best known for its bath salts. The second son of California-born Richard and Essex girl Lynn (who together ran an interior design business), the young Garfield divided his early years between stamp-collecting and swimming, proof positive, perhaps, of the limited opportunities London commuterland afforded an aspiring thesp.</p>
<p>Thankfully, he was able to follow up on his dramatic impulses by first enrolling in a Theatre Studies course at his local school, then graduating to the University of London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, the alma mater of such bigscreen heavyweights as Dame Judi Dench, Carrie Fisher and Sir Laurence Olivier. He then served his time in the world of provincial UK theatre (winning the Outstanding Newcomer Award at the prestigious Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2006), before making a guest appearance in the BBC’s <em>Doctor Who</em>, the world’s longest-running science fiction series. Various TV and movie supporting roles followed, before he hit the big time as the star of two high profile 2010 movies – <em>Never Let Me Go</em> and <em>The Social Network</em>. Two years later, he was Spider-Man.</p>

<p><strong>Two:</strong> It’s fair to say that it was <em>The Amazing Spider-Man</em> (2012) that transformed the actor’s fortunes from: “Andrew, who?” to “Oh really? I thought it was Toby Maguire…” (the incumbent Spidey in the preceding web-slinging trilogy). Despite describing the role as a “massive challenge in many ways” – and despite the popularity of his long-standing predecessor, it soon seemed as though Garfield had made the part his own. Indeed, The Guardian – the relatively, high-brow, left-leaning former broadsheet not best known for its love of the cinematic superhero genre – went as far as to acclaim him as “the definitive Spider-Man”. Sadly, he didn’t stay definitive for all that long.</p>
<p>Although he was once again swinging across the New York skyline in 2014’s somewhat unimaginatively-titled <em>The Amazing Spider-Man 2</em>, it was to be his last outing as the arachnid-venomed villain-thwarter. The third part of the putative trilogy – which, let’s take a wild stab, was called <em>The Amazing Spider-Man</em> <em>3</em> – was sadly never to be.<br />
Disappointingly, it wasn’t Doc Ock, the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter or any other of Spidey’s gaudy back catalogue of bad-doers that saw him off. Rather more prosaically, it was the conclusion of a long-term global copyright contretemps. This saw the rights to Spidey relinquished by Sony and permission granted for Peter Parker (the webslinger’s alter ego) to join the rest of the cinematic Marvel universe in time for 2016’s <em>Captain America: Civil War</em>, a sort of prelude to the box-office bazookaing end of the wider <em>Avengers</em>’ storyline.</p>
<p>Sadly, when Spidey did get to catch up with the rest of his comic book counterparts – notably Thor, the Hulk and Iron Man – he looked a lot like 20-year-old up-and-coming actor Tom Holland and not a bit like the now surplus-to-requirements Garfield.</p>

<p><strong>Three:</strong> Although dumped from the Spideyverse, Garfield can take some comfort from the fact his undoubted charms have seen him woo some of the world’s most beautiful women. Just prior to cinematic superheroing taking him centrestage, he was in a long-term relationship with <em>Westworld</em> actress Shannon Woodward. This apparently foundered when superstardom kept the couple apart. The fact that Woodward came out as gay a couple of years later, however, probably indicates the affair was ill-fated from the off.</p>
<p>Later years saw him linked to his T<em>he Amazing Spider-Man</em> co-star Emma Stone, fellow Marvel alumnus Susie Abromeit and Rita Ora, the feted and award-winning British singer-songwriter. More recently, he was said to have been dating stunning model and med school graduate, 27-year-old Christine Gabel. Rumour has it, though, that they too have split, with born-again bachelor Garfield apparently spending much of 2020 isolating at home alone.</p>

<p><strong>Four:</strong> Thankfully, the Covid-19 outbreak didn’t totally curtail his dramatic career, with filming of the forthcoming <em>Tick, Tick BOOM!</em> completed in November last year. The movie sees Garfield take on the role of Johnathan Larson, a wannabe playwright reduced to waiting tables in New York while he awaits his big break.</p>
<p>Said to be an autobiographical tale – the “real” Johnathan Larson, the man behind the Tony Award-winning musical <em>Rent</em>, wrote and composed the piece – the movie also stars Alexandra Shipp and Vanessa Hudgens, while marking the directorial debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative tour de force behind <em>Hamilton</em>, one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time.</p>

<p><strong>Five:</strong> While excitement is certainly building with regard to the premiere of <em>Tick, Tick BOOM!</em>, it’s upcoming arrival has been all but eclipsed by rumours of Something Even Bigger waiting in the wings – Garfield’s return as <em>Spider-Man</em>. Even more compelling, there is no suggestion that his successor, Holland, has been ousted, but rather that he will be joining him (and his own predecessor Maguire) in the allegedly dimension-hopping <em>Spider-Man: No Way Home</em>, which is due to hit your local multiplex at some point in December this year.</p>
<p>Should the rumours be borne out, this will see the Spidermen of various realities teaming up to combat a veritable multi-verse of villains, with Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx and Rhys Ifans returning as Doctor Octopus, Electro and The Lizard respectively from their own earlier incarnations of the franchise. Although Marvel Studios is proving coy about officially confirming this mix and matching of the wider Spidyverse, it’s now come to be regarded as petty much the Worst Kept Scripting Secret in Hollywood (and competition is high for such a title).</p>
<p>It’s fair to say, should it not come to pass, several generations of the Webbed Wonder’s most devout followers are going be left choking on their novelty Peter Parker Popcorn packets. Good as it might well certainly be, the eventual arrival of <em>Tick, Tick BOOM!</em>, may not suffice to make up for any such disappointment.</p>

<p><strong>Youthful Inspiration</strong><br />
Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike was born on 27 January 1979 in East London’s Hammersmith district, the only child of opera singers Caroline Friend and Julian Pike. Given her parents’ clear love of performing, it probably came as no surprise that she was bitten by the acting bug while still a child. Recalling watching her parents on stage as a child, she says: “All I was really looking at was whether I believed the performance, whether I believed that this was something that was real and human and true. I think all I’ve ever been interested in is the truth.”</p>

<p><strong>Star Student</strong><br />
Since the age of seven, the London-born star lived in several cities across Europe due to her opera singer father’s various commitments. As a result, she speaks fluent French and German. Despite the constant relocation, Pike remained an outstanding student, eventually winning a full scholarship to Bristol’s prestigious Badminton School, before enrolling at Oxford University to major in English Literature.</p>
<p><strong>Acting Bug</strong><br />
Although her parents’ career piqued Pike’s interest in stage performance, it wasn’t until she watched renowned actor Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in 1993’s In the Name of the Father that she decided to enter the industry herself. Addressing the influence of this seminal performance, she says: “It made me realise the power of film and made me aware that this medium could inspire a physical reaction within me.”</p>
