VCDC builds homes in Metro Manila designed to ‘Live Differently’


<p>In the bustling city of Manila, a serene and stunning residence stands out as a testament to the ideal blend of creativity and brutalism. The breathtaking abode is a masterclass in combining style, comfort and functionality. Materials are simple and essential, the colour scheme is boldly black and white, and the mood minimalist.</p>

<p>Brutalist interior design is characterised by its untreated concrete, angular lines and stark aesthetic, and this house in Manila follows a similar expression of functionality while embracing a raw beauty. The built area of about 2,200 square feet sits on a 4,000-square-foot lot in Afpovai, an upcoming neighbourhood close to Bonifacio Global City.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Natural materials like wood, stone and plants are often incorporated within modern brutalist interiors to balance the coldness of concrete and metal, and this can be seen throughout the spacious residence. <p>Conceived as a sanctuary for a couple to enjoy after retirement, it was designed by Ivy Almario of Atelier Almario, an award-winning interior design firm known for its distinctive style. The designer’s philosophy is centred around creating spaces that resonate with her clients’ personalities and lifestyles. In this instance, their love of shutters features throughout the house, dividing the anteroom, bedroom and living room while maintaining a sense of intimacy and unity.</p>

<p>As you step into this airy retreat, you are immediately enveloped by an aura of calm, thanks to the clever use of natural ventilation and a soothing colour palette. The double-height ceiling and kamagong wood accents create a sense of drama, while the carefully curated collection of oriental artefacts adds a touch of sophistication.</p>

<p>Since the house is cocooned among other buildings, the clients requested that the designer employ efficient ventilation to remedy the otherwise stifling tropical heat. In the initial stages of the design process, it was thus decided that the first floor would be wrapped by a lanai (open-sided verandah). Their preference for louvre windows also upgraded the space. Landscape design was thoughtfully implemented with the plantation of citronella to control mosquitoes. Essentially, the home was designed to be a solution to the challenges of the site.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The most striking feature is the inclusion of plentiful plants, vines and even a tree inside the house, hinting that the owners have a green thumb. This blends nature with the indoors and makes the living spaces fresher and more inviting. Another distinctive element is the tall metal racks that serve as storage space rather than built-in cabinets or shelves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Metal is used throughout the house whether in railings for the staircase and landing or the living-room furniture. Here, the L-shaped sofa matches the coffee table in its sleek metal-frame design. Both furniture and upholstery embody the residence’s dark-hued theme. A large, round mirror transforms the staircase wall into a feature wall and accentuates the scale of the room. </p>

<p>In terms of paint and colour, a skim coat is used on the outside concrete, while the inner walls are painted white and offset by a plethora of black. Timber tiles were used on the floor to soften the appearance of the large, vertical-slatted windows. The abundance of natural light alleviates the rugged textures, creating a sense of warmth and comfort.</p>

<p>Ample natural light also pours in through the shutters of the master bedroom, which becomes a tranquil oasis. The use of luxe fabrics and neutral colours adds to the calming ambience; it is easy to imagine yourself relaxing in this peaceful haven. The walk-in closet has a dressing table and full-length mirrors opposite the wardrobes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The remote paradise of El Nido has gained international repute over recent years for its magnificent white-sand beaches, abrupt limestone formations, luscious turquoise waters and amazing coral reefs that are a magnet for scuba divers. As its accessibility has improved, so has its appeal, and it is now one of the most popular resort destinations in the Philippines. Its location in northern Palawan provides the perfect gateway to the Bacuit archipelago, where fabulous island-hopping tours of surreal lagoons and world-famous beaches will take your breath away.</p>

<p>The northern reaches of Palawan island – the largest province in the Philippines – boasts many scenic locations that are staunchly preserved and attractive villages with tree-lined streets. <p>The municipality of El Nido is fronted by karst limestone cliffs similar to the spectacular rock formations of Guilin in China or Phang Nga Bay in Thailand. These days, its many charms and luxurious accommodations can be conveniently accessed by a flight from Manila that lasts just over an hour. Before the local airport was built, though, the town could only be reached via road from the coastal city of Puerto Princesa about 238 kilometres to the south – a rather precarious journey that could at times fray the nerves. This area is also home to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park, acclaimed as a natural wonder of the world for its underground habitat of cathedral caverns, massive stalactites, icy lagoons and swooshing bats.</p>

<p>El Nido means ‘the nest’ in Spanish and is so- called as swiftlets flock to the nooks and crannies of the towering black cliffs to build their homes. Unlike most birds, who conventionally gather twigs, dead leaves, grass or feathers to construct nests, the swiftlets – or balinsasayaw as they are known here – use their own saliva, which hardens when exposed to the air. Locals clamber up rickety bamboo scaffolding to harvest these prized edible nests from the high crags and caves.</p>

<p>Manila’s southern sister is nothing like her. Cebu is older, prettier and more relaxed. She doesn’t even speak the same language. Manila’s tongue is that of the northern Tagalog minority – the country’s official language despite having only 17 million native speakers. Cebuano, on the other hand, is spoken by 21 million and is known for its “hard tongue” sound and rough charm.</p>
<p>Where the capital of the Philippines is congested and heavily urbanised, Cebu city is just a dot on the eponymous province, which consists of a large main island and 167 surrounding islands. To the traveller with no time constraints, adventure awaits in each and every one of them.</p>

<p>All flights touch down at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located on the smaller island of<strong> Mactan</strong> across from the main metropolis. Today Mactan is home to several luxury resorts, but historically it was a kingdom ruled by King Lapu-Lapu. The ruler was crowned a local hero after slaying the famous Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan when he tried to conquer the island on behalf of the Spanish throne.</p>
<p><em>Gafencu’s </em>top pick for a 5-star Filipino experience on Mactan is the well-established <strong><a href="http://www.plantationbay.com/">Plantation Bay Resort &amp; Spa</a></strong>. With its classic wood furnishings and marble fittings, the colonial-style institution features one of the world’s largest privately-owned lagoons. Its name alludes to the Spanish cash crop plantations that several <em>haciendero </em>families made their fortunes from.</p>

<p>Myriad activities are on offer within Plantation Bay’s 11.4ha complex, from jet skiing and tennis to cycling and paddle boarding. If you’ve somehow managed to exhaust the in-house facilities, neighbouring islands offer plenty of opportunities for salty excursions, whether it’s diving, snorkelling or island hopping.</p>
<p>If you’re looking for more R&amp;R, head to the award-winning <strong>Mogambo Springs</strong> spa for pampering. It remains open until 11pm, perfect for those late-night massage cravings. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to end the day than soaking in the warm, hydrotherapeutic pool. We swear by the spa’s hot stone massage, which can stop a cold in its tracks.</p>

<p>Extreme sport enthusiasts who crave adventure beyond Mactan’s comfortable paradise will find what they’re looking for in<strong> Badian</strong>. The canyoneering excursion begins in Alegria, a four-hour drive west of Mactan. You’ll need to don a helmet and life jacket for this guided journey through a 10km stretch of streams and waterfalls. The final destination can only be reached by jumping, swimming, climbing, floating, abseiling and even cliff diving your way through the rugged terrain. We promise that the chance to swim beneath <strong>Kawasan </strong><strong>Falls</strong> is worth risking life and limb for, though. Set aside five hours for the entire experience, plus the travel time to get in and out of Kawasan.</p>
<p>Beyond Alegria, another one of southern Cebu’s gems is the municipality of <strong>Moalboal</strong> (25km north), famous for its sardine run, in which divers can swim with a million-strong school.</p>

<p>Northern Cebu, meanwhile, is harder to get to but potentially more rewarding. You would be leaving the bulk of mainstream tourists behind as you’re ferried off to an exotic shore of your choosing. <strong>Malapascua</strong><strong> Island</strong> is legendary among divers for its thresher shark and manta ray encounters. Underneath its <strong>Gato Island</strong> lies a 35m tunnel that can be explored, but it’s not for the faint-hearted – reef and whitetip sharks are known to guard the entrance.</p>
<p>Going to Malapascua without diving would be a shame, so if you’re interested in learning, it’s the perfect place. You can book a <em><a href="https://thetripguru.com/tour/padi-scuba-diving-adventures-in-cebu">Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) course </a></em>via travel tech start-up <strong><a href="http://www.thetripguru.com/">Trip Guru</a></strong>, among other activities in the Cebu region such as <a href="https://thetripguru.com/tour/night-diving-in-cebu">night diving</a>, <a href="https://thetripguru.com/tour/sunset-cruise-party-join-tour">sunset cruises</a> and <a href="https://thetripguru.com/tour/level-1-kitesurfer">kite surfing</a>.</p>
<p>Non-divers won’t be stuck twiddling their thumbs, though. Visitors can snorkel above a shipwreck near <strong>Lighthouse</strong><strong> Beach</strong>, take a leap of faith off <strong>Lapus Lapus</strong><strong> cliff</strong> or lounge on the nearby <strong>Kalanggaman Island</strong>’s pristine sandbar.</p>

<p>Finally, we head to the busy hub of Cebu city, heart of the richest province in the Philippines. For unobstructed views of city lights cast upon a black sky, take a mountain bike (or taxi) before dusk to Tops Lookout at <strong>Mt Busay</strong>’s peak. If hiking is more your speed, look up <strong>Osmeña Peak</strong> – the highest mountain in Cebu, situated 80km from the centre.</p>
<p>By the time you head back to the airport in Mactan, both your belly and camera will be full. Chances are you’ll have had plenty of interaction with the jolly natives of the south, who once belonged to tribes that tattooed their warriors from neck to ankle. As for you, your markings will be the contagious smile you’ve picked up from the locals, as well as a few tan lines to show off back home.</p>
