Tura Collection: Roca’s Tribute to Barcelona’s Formalist Architecture

In the vibrant city of Hong Kong, where consumerism has long been synonymous with high-rises and luxury malls, one woman is revolutionising the shopping landscape by infusing sustainability into the heart of retail. Natalie Chow, the visionary co- founder of sustainable sneaker-maker KIBO (K!BO in branding parlance), is leading the charge to redefine the shopping experience, placing environmental consciousness at the forefront.

From the get-go, it was important to Chow that her marketing and message did not make consumers feel bad about their shopping and lifestyle choices while offering them a guilt-free planet-friendly alternative. The savvy businesswoman is aware that there are a lot of unexpected implications associated with the food, clothing and accessories we use and own – consequences that affect not just animals but also society and the environment. She is keen to stress that the objective isn’t guilt, even when discussing the appalling circumstances people endure in fast-fashion factories or the catastrophic effects of animal husbandry on the planet.

“I was always drawn to beautiful things and advertising was actually what I really wanted to get into; hence, I started studying marketing,” says the University of Melbourne alumnus. “I did both marketing and psychology, which are extremely correlated. I think the human brain is fascinating, and quite often we make irrational choices, and I wanted to understand how people make choices every day, and what influences them to do so.”



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Equal footing</h3>



Chow chooses to wear independent brands for our shoot, as a way to support the local creative scene. Arriving back from a 4-hour Singapore-to-Hong Kong flight, she looks fresh and ready to pose in the hallways of PMQ, where fellow start-up projects and businesses reside.

“Was I there for Taylor Swift? I wish!” she exclaims, breaking into laughter. “But no, I was in Singapore for a sneaker convention. The sneaker world is still a man- dominated industry – surprise, surprise! When I started my own business, I realised how big of a gender gap there is out there in other industries, especially in the start-up space.”

While the majority of sneaker firms were started by men, KIBO was conceived, is run, and the products are designed, by women. Men have long controlled the shoe industry, which is reflected in the preponderance of masculine designs and styles. Conversely, KIBO was created with a heavy emphasis on equality, which is understandable given that it is backed by a sizable female community.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Green path</h3>



Chow’s journey towards becoming a trailblazer in sustainable fashion is rooted in her early life and background. Born in Hong Kong, she and her two sisters were raised in Australia by their mother, and she developed a deep appreciation for the unique blend of culture, energy and commerce in the city they lived in. She traces her connection with nature back to her childhood, recalling that she separated the household recyclables from the age of seven.

“I believe this is a journey for myself, and for everyone out there too,” she says. “When I started there was no such thing as ESG (environmental, social and governance) and now it’s mandatory for many companies. The framework and the bar have become clearer over the years, so in both the corporate world and schools, there are standards to comply with and a goal to achieve. As for myself, I have learnt the different credentials in material sourcing, GRS (Global Recycled Standard), BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and so on, and how to make decisions in production.”

Driven by a desire to effect change, Chow dedicated herself to understanding the complexities of sustainability in fashion. She immersed herself in extensive research, exploring alternative materials, ethical production methods and the concept of circular fashion. Through her studies and personal experiences, she realised she had a unique opportunity to create a brand that could challenge the status quo and inspire others to embrace sustainable fashion.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"> One step at a time</h3>



KIBO, meaning hope in Japanese, was founded in 2019 and was officially launched in 2020, with the goal of giving life and waste new hope. ‘Kind to the planet and kind to your feet’ is their promise, as Chow and her team employ materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, such as leather scraps from manufacturers, recovered post-consumer plastic waste, and most recently, imitation leather made from apple waste.

“I was on maternity leave when my husband [KIBO co-founder Simon Chow] and I started to brainstorm. At that time, we noticed there really was a gap as well as an opportunity in the sneakers space and I guess that’s how the seed was planted,” she recalls. Her husband’s family runs a shoe- manufacturing company.

“Moreover, as a mother of two, I wanted to pursue something meaningful and purposeful that my kids would grow up and be proud of. Sustainability has to encompass ethics and transparency, otherwise, it’s quite meaningless. Since we have an edge of having relevant backgrounds in this industry, we decided to take this leap of faith.”

As the introductory lines on the KIBO website spell out, ‘the ! is a reminder to do things differently. The fashion industry needs to change and tackle big issues such as climate change and modern slavery.

And that’s only possible if we adapt ourselves and unite as a community. Because we know that every small step goes a long way.’



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Walk the walk</h3>



Through her brand’s ethical practices and commitment to transparency, she has successfully challenged the conventional notion that fashion and sustainability are incompatible. But she is far from settling, and will continue to improve.

“Problem-solving has been a skill that I was fortunate to have adopted with my previous work experiences, but being a brand founder has taken it to the next level just because we have problems to solve every single day. From production hiccups to liaising with partners, both soft skills and hard skills are required such as managing my own time and analytical skills,” she says.

By making conscious consumerism accessible and stylish, KIBO has inspired a broader movement towards a more sustainable future for Hong Kong’s retail industry. Its success serves as a testament to the power of idealists to effect meaningful change, reminding us that a person can go into an industry they are passionate about without compromising their beliefs.

As Chow emphasises throughout our conversation, sustainability and style can indeed go hand in hand. But behind it all is a drive to connect with consumers through her shoes. She considers fashion a service industry. When she’s working on a collection, she is thinking about how a KIBO piece should make you feel: confident, comfortable, alive and effortless.

This is in line with a general shift towards sustainability and mindful shopping, philosophies that maintain you should look after your purchases, making sure they fit well and are well maintained – especially when it comes to luxury items such as designer bags, shoes and accessories. Indeed, many of these items, have become an investment of sorts through the years with many consumers coming to appreciate the true value of these items – notwithstanding their value appreciating the older they get.
So it should come as no surprise to discover that bespoke repair shops catering to such luxury materials as leather, tweed and fur have proliferated throughout the city, including the three outlets investigated in this article. Setting up a proper family governance structure 
There are often many disparate parts and unique circumstances that need to be taken into consideration when planning and implementing a firm strategy for family succession and wealth transfer. However, the first step is to actually embark on the journey itself. “I’ve been in this business for more than 27 years now, and it’s our day-to-day job. But I can totally understand that for our clients, it can be overwhelming and daunting because they’re being asked to lay out what should happen when they are no longer around, what should happen to their business, their grandchildren and so forth,” says Lee. “One of our biggest responsibilities is to ensure we’re able to break this out into actionable, digestible parts. Every family is unique, and we can help them prioritise by putting forth feasible, pragmatic solutions and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each, so they can make the right decision.”
As family dynamics can change over time, constant review and revision of any existing plans are also hugely important. “In many cases, my clients have made plans in the past, but when we revisit them years later, they no longer hold up to the family’s needs and circumstances today,” she expands, “It’s worth checking back in with the plan you’ve made every three to five years to see if anything needs to be amended or included. You need to treat it as a live document, as planning is a life-long process.
Making decisions the right way 
It’s no secret that without a proper succession planning, many affluent families lose their wealth within a few generations. To combat this challenge on the outset, Lee emphasises that open communication and a collective decision-making process is key. “Often, we are dealing with the wealth creator, the person who’s head of the family and in charge of making all the big decisions, and this case, setting up a structure is relatively straightforward,” she explains, “However, if you include the next generation, there are even more voices, and by the third, you could be dealing with a cousin consortium where family members actually come from different upbringings and backgrounds. That’s why it’s so critical to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of these individuals, to segregate various family interests, and highlight who are the best candidates occupy certain decision-making positions.”
“Given human nature, it’s only natural that there are situations where opinions vary. In these instances, implementing a collective decision-making process where everyone is aware of the rules of the game and how decisions ultimately get made is critical,” she continues, “There’s a lot of compromising that needs to happen, but they can test the system over time on small choices to larger ones. It can be anything from matters pertaining to business investments, charitable donations, or the inclusion of spouses to various forums the family may have. As long as there’s an accepted system in place and communication is facilitated, everyone can get their proper say.”
Building a sustainable legacy 
“In addition to just growing and preserving family wealth, and creating a succession plan, clients also want to invest and deploy resources towards the environment and other sustainability initiatives,” says Lee. This marked shift from simply cutting cheques for sundry charitable causes to fostering very real, meaningful impact is a timely one, particularly in an age where the effects of global warming are being increasingly felt across the globe.

Soymilk 
Calorie: 80 &#8211; 100kcal 
Although not a new form of beverage, it has been used in popular diet trends for a while now. Traditionally made by soaking soybeans overnight before grinding the beans with water, it is naturally low in saturated fats and cholesterol. It&#8217;s a good source of protein, potassium, and even calcium (when fortified with it). It is also suitable for people with estrogen deficiency (because of its natural phytoestrogen compound) and lactose intolerance. 
Note: Not suitable for people with soy allergy
Almond milk 
Calorie: 30 &#8211; 60kcal 
Made by blending almonds and water before filtering it to separate the solids, this plant-based milk has a surprisingly creamy texture and a flavourful nuttiness to it. Although almonds are a solid source of protein, almond milk contains very little of it. It&#8217;s USP is that it&#8217;s low calorie, has a splash of calcium, Vitamin A and D. 
Note: Not suitable for persons with nut allergy
Cashew milk 
Calorie: 60kcal 
Whip it up in your homemade latte, masala chai or make a matcha for a midday spike&nbsp;of L-theanine, you&#8217;ll be thanking us later. &nbsp;Like almond milk, cashew milk is low in calories and doesn&#8217;t cause blood sugar levels to spike. It&#8217;s a great source of zinc, copper and magnesium but the milk lacks a lot of the essential nutrients found in regular dairy milk such as calcium, unless of course it is fortified with it.&nbsp; 
Note: Not suitable for people with nut allergies
Coconut milk 
Calorie: 230kcal 
Say hello to your keto diet friend! Unlike the thicker coconut milk typically used in cooking, this beverage is made by diluting the coconut cream. It&#8217;s got a pretty typical tropical taste to it &#8211; &nbsp;naturally high in fats, lower in carbohydrates but doesn&#8217;t contain any vitamins, calcium or protein like your cow, nuts or grain-based milk. The upside though, the creaminess and high fat content keeps you fuller for longer and lowers your bad cholesterol. Watch out for the calories, they vary tremendously from brand to brand.&nbsp; 
Note: Contains fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive issues
Oat milk 
Claorie: 130kcal 
We saved the best for the last. We&#8217;re definetly oat milk&#8217;s #1 fan here. It&#8217;s creamy, thick, tasty and blends perfectly with coffees and smoothies, what&#8217;s not to love, really? Possibly the best plant-based milk option out of the bunch and a great choice if you have lactose intolerance, soy or nut allergies. Made by simply blending rolled oats with water and straining into a thinner cream-like beverage &#8211; it&#8217;s a good source of vitamins, minerals and beta-glucans, a soluble fiber that promotes cardiovascular benefits. 
Note: Good for people with lactose intolerance, nut and soy allergy or digestive problems. Lower in protein so gym-goers watch-out

You founded Caelum Greene in 2016. Could you tell us about the brand? 
Caelum Greene is a premier athleisure and wellness lifestyle brand. We aim to promote conscious consumption and curate the best products for our increasingly mindful consumers. We started as an independent boutique on Hollywood Road in 2016, then opened several pop-up shops all over the city, before relocating our flagship store to Landmark in Central two years ago.

Caelum is the Latin word for heaven and Greene is a double entendre: first, the colour that represents our hope for a sustainable utopia, and secondly, the name of someone who personifies that vision – Caelum Greene is basically every single one of our customers.

How does Caelum Greene contribute to the sustainable market? 
Some might say that the most sustainable solution to reducing our waste is abstaining from shopping altogether. If not that, the next best thing is buying what already exists from second-hand or rental platforms. Though that is absolutely true, there are still other ways to shop for new things and have good intentions – that is where we come in.
We work with brands that sustainably source materials and practise eco-friendly and carbon-offsetting manufacturing. Some of our brands extend their practices beyond environmental concerns into more socially-focused agendas such as fair wages and partnering with local talents and female-owned brands. Internally, we hold ourselves to the same high standards that we expect from our vendors. We reuse, repurpose and recycle as much as possible and source eco-friendly materials for everything from the fit-out of our brick-and-mortar store to our packaging.

What path did your career take and how did it lead you to starting a business in wellness? 
While most of my experience is in fashion, wellness has always been a big part of my life. I have been an avid yogi and a certified yoga instructor for more than a decade. After graduating from the University of California, my first “real” job was at a yoga wear company called Zobha. When I moved back to Hong Kong in 2012, I joined Christian Louboutin’s merchandising team for Hong Kong and Southeast Asia where I spent a few years learning a different side of the luxury fashion business. After that, I moved to The Pure Group as Regional Retail Manager for Asia-Pacific.
Throughout my career, seeing first hand the impact of our consumption patterns sparked my desire to create something that positively impacted the community in a way that I knew how: by merging two of my biggest passions – fashion and wellness – while drawing from skills and experiences that I already had. Thus, the idea of a Caelum Greene was formed. To be honest, the brand came to fruition a little earlier than I had thought it would in my career – everything happened at the right place and the right time. It’s been an exciting experience having been able to merge the two, and for the last five years, this has been my life.

What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your own business? 
As with everything else, getting started is the hardest part. When all your ideas are nothing but an Excel file and a PowerPoint slide, convincing people to work with and fund the company is an uphill battle. On top of that, there always seemed to be constant fires to put out, such as late deliveries, disgruntled customers, water leakages, going over budget: the list is endless.
One challenge that I am still working through is finding the balance between work and personal life. For example, when we opened our first store, I had to fly out the following week for my wedding, and then on the opening of one of our pop-up stores happened to be scheduled just three weeks after I gave birth to my daughter. I’ve had to learn to be extra mindful about when to switch off work mode and stay present with my loved ones. But what’s helped me get through all the difficulties is the love of building something I truly believe in and the rewards of working hard with a community of people who share our vision.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you’re particularly excited about? 
We’ve been excited all year about the opening of our new location with New World Development at The Forest in Mong Kok, and in the summer, we will be launching our first ever collaborative collection. We’ve partnered with local sustainable brand to create a capsule luxe lounge collection comprised of eight versatile pieces that can be worn from day to night – whether you’re going out to brunch before a workout or having cocktails at happy hour, or even just to look cute lounging at home. 
Work projects aside, I am also cooking up baby number two, as we speak, who will be joining our family in the autumn.

What does your average day look like, and how do you like to spend your downtime? 
I wake up at 7am and start the day with meditation. I like to move my body in the morning with yoga and on some days, I do some weighted movements. My daughter and I always have breakfast together before she goes to school. I try to get my biggest pieces of work done then, before I pick her up at lunch, followed by more work, meetings and store visits in the afternoon. Even though my husband and I have different work schedules, we make it a point to have dinner together as a family. My evenings usually end with Netflix on in the background as I get through my e-mails and personal admin work, which is, believe it or not, my way of relaxing.
Although I don’t get a lot of downtime, when I do, I like to be out in nature, whether it’s taking my dog on a hike or going sailing every other weekend – if not every weekend – to explore remote beaches and islands.

If you won a US$10 million lottery, what would be the first big-ticket item you’d purchase? 
Right now, we have a monohull sailboat which I would love to upgrade to a performance catamaran. The biggest item on the top of my bucket list is to take a year off with my family before the kids are in high school, and sail around the world. I’ve always been pretty outdoorsy and my husband loves doing adventurous things, so sailing is the best compromise for us to enjoy being out in nature as a family.

Their stockless approach skips the excessive waste and carbon footprint production that typically go into making jeans.

In fact, a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance stated 58 percent of global passenger vehicle sales in 2040 will come from electric vehicles. With the Hong Kong government actively supporting the adoption of EV cars throughout the city and a wider range of options available on the market, is it time to switch over to electric cars?

A larger network of charging stations 
The local government has, for several years, taking an active role in supporting the adoption of electric cars in the city through tax reductions, financial incentives and more importantly laying out infrastructures for charging stations across the city. In 2019, The Chief Executive announced the preparation of a $2 billion pilot subsidy scheme to promote the installation of an EV charging network that will be made easily accessible to EV car owners in private residential car parks as well as public parking spaces.&nbsp;

Better for the environment 
Hong Kong’s air pollution index has been a major cause of concern for many residents, as well as the local government, prompting it to facilitate an EV-friendly city to combat the detrimental consequences of greenhouse gas emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles. According to the Environmental Protection Department, 60% of carbon monoxide emissions comes from transportation. Because electric cars are powered by electric motors that run on rechargeable batteries, replacing conventional cars with EV cars drastically reduces carbon emissions into the air.&nbsp;

More Economical

A growing range of options 
Over the years the number of electric vehicles and hybrid cars entering the market has steadily increased, offering an optimistic future for the development and advancement of EV cars. No longer exclusive to Tesla, the industry now features some of the biggest names in the motor industry including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Porsche and Volkswagen, to name a few. Rolls Royce had also declared its commitment to manufacturing a line of EV cars, skipping on hybrids completely, and iPhone and Macintosh technology company Apple also recently announced that it will be rolling out an EV car in 2024.
As of right now, Tesla remains in the lead, offering models with the longest range and quickest acceleration on the market, however that will soon change with more hybrid sedans and utility EVs expected to come out of the woodworks with improved specifications, performance, charging time, and even more luxurious exterior and interior layouts.&nbsp;

Save on cost 
Though the cost of purchasing an EV car can set you back anywhere between $500,000 to $1 million, the cost of maintenance and servicing will save buyers money in the long run. Conventional cars consist of several parts that often break down or need regular servicing or maintenance, whereas EV cars only need to be serviced twice a year and have their brake fluid replaced every 5 years. Though the battery packs are the most expensive part to maintaining ((between five to fifteen thousand) an EV car, most battery packs come with an eight-year (or 100,000miles) warranty and take about 17 years to die (or&nbsp; 200,000miles).&nbsp;
So, is it time to switch to electric cars? 
There are at least 12,000 registered electric cars in the city and despite the initial upfront cost of switching over to an electric car is high, the need for maintenance, servicing and downtime are much less and more convenient than conventional cars. Saving at least $5,000 per year, not including the government’s incentives. And with a wider range of options to hit the market in the next few years, and a more widespread network of EV chargers in gross spaces, both public and private residential areas across the city to accommodate the demands of private electric car owners, there is very little downside to a sustainable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly move as to switch from conventional gas-powered cars to its electric alternative.&nbsp;
