These are garments that are developed based on technological principles that also follow current fashion trends. With computers practically sewn into modern day garbs, clothing may be just another means of storing data in the future. Although today’s garments are conceived as individual structures, the technological interfaces that characterise these acoutrements will make fabrics a part of the global system in the future – proving fashion is more than just a façade.

The future of fashion will deliver more than a technological portal, making garments inextricably intertwined with one’s experience of wearing them. In fact, many fields of design are already exploring sustainable textile, fabcrics inspired by biomimicry is one example, allowing garments to thicken in autumn and slim down in spring – making linings and layers unnecessary. Some innovations are created with the aim of prolonging the garments’ lifespan. Forever clean fabrics and ‘sweat-proof’ shirts will transform clothing from wash-and-wear into self-cleaning or non-wash materials. As a result, seams will stop twisting out of shape and detailing will no longer fray or disintegrate, allowing clothes to look fresher for longer and giving them an extended life. Hence, well-tailored garments will continue to prevail, while throwaway chic may soon be obsolete.

The word sustainability has been dominating the fashion industry long before the term ‘woke’ made its way into our everyday vocabulary.Whether it is re-purposing used and old materials or simply opting for a much more eco-friendly alternatives, there are many ways to make an impact that are better for the earth, while still enjoyin the aesthetic fashion allows. However, it is easier said than done as sustainability has become somewhat of a marketing ploy for some major brands.

So, what exactly does sustainable fashion ential? It means eco-friendly practices on multiple levels across the industry, referencing the approach of design, production and consumption of clothes and accessories that avoid causing little to no damage to the earth, and in turn creating an industry practice that is sustainable for the environment. In an industry not always known for its transparency, consumers may look to brands that put an emphasis on transparency in their supply chain.

A leading example is Stella McCartney. She has earned public appreciation for her epynomous label’s business model and brand DNA that put sustainability, fair trade and anti-animal cruelty at the forefront of its production and supply chain long before sustainability was a hot topic.
Never mixing sustainability with non-sustainable components, while also excludeing products made from leather, fur and PVC. In 2005, the brand collaborated with sneaker giant Adidas to create ‘Adidas by Stella McCartney,’ a collection of sustainable sneakers and activewear that pushed the boundaries of what it meant to create an open and green ethos. In 2014, the brand launched Clevercare, a five-step labelling system that provides guided information on maintaining clothes – reducing waste and making each item a timeless piece.

More than just a high-fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood is also an activist that champions eco-friendly luxury fashion. In her Fall 2022 collection, the creative team opted for eorganic cotton, recycled polyester and nylon, as well as natural fabrics, led by the motto ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last’ at its core. According to the company website, they emphasise on making clothes with greater care, promoting arts and culture, while trying to mobilise people around climate change and human rights.&nbsp;These star examples pave the way for luxury fashion to take an ethical approach and move the needle in the right direction. With room for growth, the path forward cannot be an all-or-nothing approach.

Thrusting upcycled garments to the top of consumer goods, this practice takes old garments apart, remake them into entirely new fashion pieces that surpass their second-hand status and give them the same prestige as brand new clothings.
Fashion retail as we know it is already exploring a future in which consumers can contribute to the production cycle. No longer limited to the shelves of boutiques, consumers are taking a more active role in the creation process. As fashion companies depart from conventional retail, they are establishing fresh forums that enable brands to communicate with their consumers effectively, transforming their relationship with clothes – physically and emotionally. This reflects our ever evolving connection to fashion and technology.

Your family has more than 40 years of experience in the fashion industry. What does fashion mean to you? 
From a business perspective, I think fashion, simply put, is to fulfil desires. It’s about understanding the constantly changing market and what customers want ­– listening to and meeting those demands.&nbsp;
Fashion is ever changing and I’ve had time to build up my knowledge of the industry. Both my parents started fashion businesses, so I was exposed to it early on in life. From a young age, I spent a lot of time watching my parents gain insight into the world of fashion; even our Sundays were spent together visiting brands for a better understanding of the market.
What path did your education take, and how has it impacted your professional life? 
I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong before completing my Master’s at one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States, Princeton University. Both experiences were very beneficial to my personal and professional growth. I was especially impressed by the engagement and interactive discussions between students and professors when I was in Princeton University. The students were very intelligent and the professors were supportive; this helped mould how I run my own company.
For the past decade, you’ve been the top management of High Fashion, the company founded by your father. Did you have other career aspirations growing up or did you always see yourself within the family fold? 
I was quite heavily influenced by both my parents. They were both entrepreneurs, and I think witnessing them build their businesses from scratch inspired me to run a business myself.&nbsp;
But beyond the fashion industry, I love the technology industry. In fact, our company – as well as my family and I, on a personal level – has invested in several start-ups. We develop ecovation programmes that help young entrepreneurs aspiring to start big businesses. I love new ideas that contribute to innovative business models to transform industries – not only in fashion but every sector of the economy.

What have been the major contributing factors to your company’s success? 
High Fashion is the global leader in silk manufacturing and one of Asia’s leaders in sustainability and providing affordable, luxurious garments. We are also a fully vertical supply chain. We provide a one-stop service for all types of customers from all over the world, from textiles to garment production.
I believe that innovation has been the most important factor in our success. Our clients are some of the most well-known brands in the world, and they are constantly looking for unique and creative ways to meet the demands of their consumers. At High Fashion, we seek out new fabrics, new ways of servicing, new re-engineering processes, as well as forms of technologies that allow us to produce a consistent flow of innovative products.
But on top of that, our diverse team has been key to the growth of our business. I believe that having an office culture that nurtures creativity is another important factor for a company’s success. We encourage staff to share new ideas and be open to collaborations, and embrace trial and error as part of the learning process.
Could you give us an example of how creativity and innovation have boosted your business? 
I am always grateful to our staff and their support in growing a successful company. In turn, I feel that it is my responsibility to provide them with the best environment in which to perform and grow. We offer platforms that allow them to continue learning, which is especially important now that we see new businesses disrupting traditional organisations. We like to promote a fast-learning culture that encourages staff to learn about new market trends, visit different exhibitions, take part in seminars and network with other professionals. We also guide them through three to five years of career planning, organise management programmes and sponsor Executive MBA programmes outside of our company.
This allows the team to consistently contribute new and diverse ideas in meetings. It’s a very effective process that we focus on in order to deliver a continuous stream of innovative products.&nbsp;I believe this is one of the reasons why the majority of our staff have stayed loyal to the company – most of them have been with us for more than 20 to 30 years.&nbsp;

You’re known as a supporter of intelligent garment manufacturing. Can you tell us how this has changed and benefited the company’s productivity? 
I think intelligent garment manufacturing is a trend that will last long into the future. Everyone is talking about the new economy, implying how technology plays a huge role in transforming traditional businesses. Because the garment industry is quite labour intensive, technologies like robotics and digitalisation offer businesses a leg up.
We look for ways to capture different ideas that are imbedded in technologies and apply them to garment manufacturing. In the past few years, we’ve spent a lot of time on automation. We were able to increase our productivity by 30 to 40 percent without having to reduce our labour force. And this is just the beginning: we will continue to learn about integrating automation into garment production. New companies are already adopting automation and advanced technology, which is why I believe technology will be an inevitable transition for the garment business, and will transform traditional companies into faster-growing entities.
Sustainability has become a hot topic in fashion. Could you share your thoughts on the subject? 
Sustainability is the key to a more secure future for the generations to come. We hold great value in the initiative to help our customers transition from less sustainable into more sustainable products. This is where my belief in education comes in. Whenever we work with clients and consumers, we inform them about the importance of sustainability and how we can provide them with sustainable products. For example, incorporating sustainable production processes such as recycling and up-cycling.&nbsp;
Our factory is one of the best known for sustainability; it holds a green-level certification – the highest level in China – and we are one of the few garment factories that uses solar power to recycle energy throughout the production process. Thinking two or three decades into the future and how our business affects the planet, we will introduce new elements of sustainability in our production process and supply chain wherever possible – ensuring more eco-friendly production that avoids excessive waste and reduces the carbon footprint.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has also been a priority for High Fashion. Why do you feel it’s so important to give back? 
I think education is very important; I’m very grateful that I had the opportunity to learn a lot when I was at university. Which is why I feel that it’s important to provide that same exposure to youngsters who have limited resources and avenues in which to develop their interests and career path. We strongly support education by providing opportunities for university students to join exchange programmes overseas. We have also built schools in Asia – China, mainly – such as the High Fashion Women’s Institute in Hangzhou that has offered tertiary fashion education for over 10 years.
What upcoming projects or new initiatives are you most excited about? 
Since 2020, we have been working on WL District, a newly renovated, open shared space that allows CEOs and creatives to collaborate and network. Whether hosting an event or holding an exhibition, we aim to provide a space that allows like-minded individuals to come together with their unique backgrounds, expertise and skills. From the concept to the interior design, we’ve put careful consideration into every aspect of creating a venue that inspires creativity, collaboration and innovation.
What’s your favourite way to relax? Do you have any hobbies? 
My favourite sport is tennis. Before I joined the company, I didn’t do much exercise, but I found that exercising helps me both mentally and physically – I feel more energised and focused. You need to be quite determined and disciplined to do well at tennis, and it’s helped me stick to my routine and improve my efficiency.
I also like chess, a game my father introduced me to when I was a child. Not only does it help with my concentration and problem-solving skills, it’s an activity that I enjoy doing with friends, as we can catch up over a game. Although it might seem mentally strenuous, I actually find it relaxing: it offers me mental clarity.

You founded Caelum Greene in 2016. Could you tell us about the brand? 
Caelum Greene is a premier athleisure and wellness lifestyle brand. We aim to promote conscious consumption and curate the best products for our increasingly mindful consumers. We started as an independent boutique on Hollywood Road in 2016, then opened several pop-up shops all over the city, before relocating our flagship store to Landmark in Central two years ago.

In a nutshell, our name encompasses everything that we do and stand for. Caelum is the Latin word for heaven and Greene is a double entendre: first, the colour that represents our hope for a sustainable utopia, and secondly, the name of someone who personifies that vision – Caelum Greene is basically every single one of our customers.

How does Caelum Greene contribute to the sustainable market? 
Some might say that the most sustainable solution to reducing our waste is abstaining from shopping altogether. If not that, the next best thing is buying what already exists from second-hand or rental platforms. Though that is absolutely true, there are still other ways to shop for new things and have good intentions – that is where we come in.
We work with brands that sustainably source materials and practise eco-friendly and carbon-offsetting manufacturing. Some of our brands extend their practices beyond environmental concerns into more socially-focused agendas such as fair wages and partnering with local talents and female-owned brands. Internally, we hold ourselves to the same high standards that we expect from our vendors. We reuse, repurpose and recycle as much as possible and source eco-friendly materials for everything from the fit-out of our brick-and-mortar store to our packaging.

What path did your career take and how did it lead you to starting a business in wellness? 
While most of my experience is in fashion, wellness has always been a big part of my life. I have been an avid yogi and a certified yoga instructor for more than a decade. After graduating from the University of California, my first “real” job was at a yoga wear company called Zobha. When I moved back to Hong Kong in 2012, I joined Christian Louboutin’s merchandising team for Hong Kong and Southeast Asia where I spent a few years learning a different side of the luxury fashion business. After that, I moved to The Pure Group as Regional Retail Manager for Asia-Pacific.
Throughout my career, seeing first hand the impact of our consumption patterns sparked my desire to create something that positively impacted the community in a way that I knew how: by merging two of my biggest passions – fashion and wellness – while drawing from skills and experiences that I already had. Thus, the idea of a Caelum Greene was formed. To be honest, the brand came to fruition a little earlier than I had thought it would in my career – everything happened at the right place and the right time. It’s been an exciting experience having been able to merge the two, and for the last five years, this has been my life.

What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your own business? 
As with everything else, getting started is the hardest part. When all your ideas are nothing but an Excel file and a PowerPoint slide, convincing people to work with and fund the company is an uphill battle. On top of that, there always seemed to be constant fires to put out, such as late deliveries, disgruntled customers, water leakages, going over budget: the list is endless.
One challenge that I am still working through is finding the balance between work and personal life. For example, when we opened our first store, I had to fly out the following week for my wedding, and then on the opening of one of our pop-up stores happened to be scheduled just three weeks after I gave birth to my daughter. I’ve had to learn to be extra mindful about when to switch off work mode and stay present with my loved ones. But what’s helped me get through all the difficulties is the love of building something I truly believe in and the rewards of working hard with a community of people who share our vision.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you’re particularly excited about? 
We’ve been excited all year about the opening of our new location with New World Development at The Forest in Mong Kok, and in the summer, we will be launching our first ever collaborative collection. We’ve partnered with local sustainable brand to create a capsule luxe lounge collection comprised of eight versatile pieces that can be worn from day to night – whether you’re going out to brunch before a workout or having cocktails at happy hour, or even just to look cute lounging at home. 
Work projects aside, I am also cooking up baby number two, as we speak, who will be joining our family in the autumn.

What does your average day look like, and how do you like to spend your downtime? 
I wake up at 7am and start the day with meditation. I like to move my body in the morning with yoga and on some days, I do some weighted movements. My daughter and I always have breakfast together before she goes to school. I try to get my biggest pieces of work done then, before I pick her up at lunch, followed by more work, meetings and store visits in the afternoon. Even though my husband and I have different work schedules, we make it a point to have dinner together as a family. My evenings usually end with Netflix on in the background as I get through my e-mails and personal admin work, which is, believe it or not, my way of relaxing.
Although I don’t get a lot of downtime, when I do, I like to be out in nature, whether it’s taking my dog on a hike or going sailing every other weekend – if not every weekend – to explore remote beaches and islands.

If you won a US$10 million lottery, what would be the first big-ticket item you’d purchase? 
Right now, we have a monohull sailboat which I would love to upgrade to a performance catamaran. The biggest item on the top of my bucket list is to take a year off with my family before the kids are in high school, and sail around the world. I’ve always been pretty outdoorsy and my husband loves doing adventurous things, so sailing is the best compromise for us to enjoy being out in nature as a family.

Their stockless approach skips the excessive waste and carbon footprint production that typically go into making jeans.

For many, sustainability is the very antithesis of fashion, with any item with a lifespan longer than a season the very epitome of redundancy.
Whisper it quietly, but all that may be about to change. Rather than sustainability being the Kryptonite to the fashion sensibilities of every super stylish woman (or man), it could be that flaunting your love for all things Rain Forest or sporting re-purposed Pirelli as your lobewear du jour is the haute couture currency of our times.

How then should the inappropriately clad avoid accidentally endorsing a sweat shop or third-world despot through a poor wardrobe decision at a future soiree?

If you plumped for (3) pretty much every time, then congratulations – couture with a conscience is second nature to you. While your fleeting commitment won’t do much to alleviate third-world suffering, it will allow you to cast withering glances at less conservationally-clad chums while talking for hours about free-trade calico without the need for any notes.
