Electric Vehicles (EV) and hybrid cars have been significantly expanding over the last decade, especially with supportive policies and technology advancement, according to the International Energy Agency. In fact, a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance stated 58 percent of global passenger vehicle sales in 2040 will come from electric vehicles. With the Hong Kong government actively supporting the adoption of EV cars throughout the city and a wider range of options available on the market, is it time to switch over to electric cars?

A larger network of charging stations 
The local government has, for several years, taking an active role in supporting the adoption of electric cars in the city through tax reductions, financial incentives and more importantly laying out infrastructures for charging stations across the city. In 2019, The Chief Executive announced the preparation of a $2 billion pilot subsidy scheme to promote the installation of an EV charging network that will be made easily accessible to EV car owners in private residential car parks as well as public parking spaces.&nbsp;

Better for the environment 
Hong Kong’s air pollution index has been a major cause of concern for many residents, as well as the local government, prompting it to facilitate an EV-friendly city to combat the detrimental consequences of greenhouse gas emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles. According to the Environmental Protection Department, 60% of carbon monoxide emissions comes from transportation. More Economical 
One of the biggest reservations most consumers have when considering an electric car is the mileage. The Tesla Model 3 currently boasts the longest range among other EV cars on the market, covering 320miles on a full six to nine-hour charge. In contrast, conventional fuel-pumped cars go between 360 to 480 miles on a full tank, needless to mention that refuelling also takes less time. But Hong Kong also has the most expensive auto-fuel retail price in the world, according to the Consumer Council. It costs $17 per litre to pump gas while charging an EV car is free.&nbsp;
However, if road trips out of the city is a priority, hybrid cars offer the best of both words covering a longer range fueled by reusable energy, and gas as a reserve. Otherwise, there are about 3,351 EV charging stations across the city, at refuelling stations, public parking spaces as well as private residential car parks (one within every 10km).

A growing range of options 
Over the years the number of electric vehicles and hybrid cars entering the market has steadily increased, offering an optimistic future for the development and advancement of EV cars. No longer exclusive to Tesla, the industry now features some of the biggest names in the motor industry including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Porsche and Volkswagen, to name a few. Rolls Royce had also declared its commitment to manufacturing a line of EV cars, skipping on hybrids completely, and iPhone and Macintosh technology company Apple also recently announced that it will be rolling out an EV car in 2024.
As of right now, Tesla remains in the lead, offering models with the longest range and quickest acceleration on the market, however that will soon change with more hybrid sedans and utility EVs expected to come out of the woodworks with improved specifications, performance, charging time, and even more luxurious exterior and interior layouts.&nbsp;

Save on cost 
Though the cost of purchasing an EV car can set you back anywhere between $500,000 to $1 million, the cost of maintenance and servicing will save buyers money in the long run. Conventional cars consist of several parts that often break down or need regular servicing or maintenance, whereas EV cars only need to be serviced twice a year and have their brake fluid replaced every 5 years. Though the battery packs are the most expensive part to maintaining ((between five to fifteen thousand) an EV car, most battery packs come with an eight-year (or 100,000miles) warranty and take about 17 years to die (or&nbsp; 200,000miles).&nbsp;
So, is it time to switch to electric cars? 
There are at least 12,000 registered electric cars in the city and despite the initial upfront cost of switching over to an electric car is high, the need for maintenance, servicing and downtime are much less and more convenient than conventional cars. Saving at least $5,000 per year, not including the government’s incentives. And with a wider range of options to hit the market in the next few years, and a more widespread network of EV chargers in gross spaces, both public and private residential areas across the city to accommodate the demands of private electric car owners, there is very little downside to a sustainable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly move as to switch from conventional gas-powered cars to its electric alternative.&nbsp;

In truth, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are far from a new invention. Fast forward the best part of two centuries though, and EVs are once more seen as the future of rapid, reliable, personal transportation. The lead here was initially taken by such doughty Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) as the Toyota Prius, a car that combined conventional automotive technology with planet-preserving alternatives. Of late, though, it is the more pure-play, all-electric contenders that have begun to surge to the fore.
As a sure sign that the sector is maturing, many luxury motoring marques have eschewed the utilitarian look and feel of earlier models, opting instead to bring a luxury ambience and aggressive performance to hitting the road without negatively impacting the biosphere. Of the many contenders keen to remain sleek and mean, while still unashamedly green, four electric hypercars, in particular, stand out as the clear frontrunners…

Volkswagen ID.R
Among the current crop of super-speedy EVs, one particular model truly towers above the pack – the Volkswagen ID.R. As initially conceived, its highly-innovative design was geared to deliver on one very specific goal – setting a new world record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, an insanely-challenging 20.8km track in Germany. It’s a target it achieved back in June, when it recorded the fastest lap time ever for an all-electric car, beating the previous record holder by a truly impressive 40 seconds. The ID.R then burnished its already impressive reputation by smashing two more records within a year, both at the Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado and at southern England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Although the ID.R is undeniably the flagship of Volkswagen’s new all-electric ID range, it remains a prototype and has never been produced commercially. The German motoring marque has, however, announced plans to incorporate much of its top-line tech into the 20 electric-powered vehicles that are scheduled to arrive in showrooms over the next few years.

If the ID.R’s record-breaking performance is to be topped any time soon, it may well be Munich-based Automobili Pininfarina that does the topping. A well-established manufacturer of luxury EVs, its much-anticipated, high-specced Pininfarina Battista is set to roll off the production line later this year. When first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, its promised performance inspired oohs and aahs all around – 0-100kmph in under two seconds, a top speed in excess of 350kmph and an impressive per-charge range of 450km.
Its headline appeal, though, lies in the enormous thrust delivered by its 120kWh lithium-ion battery pack. All told, the Battista is said to be blessed with 1,900bHp, making it the most powerful road-legal car ever to go into production. Putting that figure into perspective, it’s almost a third more than the 1,341bHp that established the Koenigsegg Agera RS as the fastest production car back in 2017. Lovingly crafted from ultra-lightweight carbon fibre and with a production run of just 150, this four-wheel-drive sensation comes with 1969lb-ft of torque as standard and all the latest on-road technology from Rimac, Pininfarina’s sportscar-focussed stablemate. Rimac C_Two
When Rimac Automobili burst onto the super-luxury EV scene with its C_One electric hypercar back in 2013, it seemed the proverbial overnight success story. Spun out of the workshop of Mate Rimac, the brand’s Croatian founder, the C_One’s truly innovative design outshone the works of countless other more famous – and well-funded – marques. What’s more, thanks to this, the services of Rimac Technology are now regularly sought out by other would-be EV supercar brands.
Not one to rest on its laurels, though, the company is expected to launch its follow up – the C_Two – any day now. Sleek, streamlined and boasting an eye-catching matte carbon fibre finish, it is to be released in a limited edition of just 150.

Tesla Roadster 2020
No list of the world’s finest electric hypercars would be complete without a Tesla, with the soon-to-be-released 2020 Tesla Roadster more than meriting inclusion in its own right. With its name a nod to the 2008 model that first saw Tesla gain international recognition, hopes are high for this new addition to its roster.
While there’s no word yet as to its likely horsepower, Tesla’s prerelease publicity promises 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of more than 250mph. If these figures have a ring of familiarity, it’s probably because they are very similar to the specs of both the Pininfarina Battista and the Rimac C_Two. Although neither manufacturer is willing to confirm it, for many, it’s clear that the new Musk-driven EV hypercar is seen as very much the one to beat.

However, Musk still has one or two secret bonus features planned that could yet ensure it proves a true gamechanger. Most notably, there is the SpaceX thruster package, a refinement that has been the subject of several of the inventor’s most intriguing tweets. With the world’s foremost EV entrepreneur going as far as to hint that this under-wraps thruster technology could even see the new vehicle one day zoom skywards, it may be that the battle for supremacy amongst environmentally-friendly electric hypercars may truly be about to take off like never before.

Jack Ma may have said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a threat to us at the recent World Economic Forum at Davos, but car companies are pouring big bucks into AI-driven smart car designs. According to telecom giant Ericsson, smart cars with AI are here to stay and will revolutionise the way we travel.
Ericsson mentioned in a <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/5g/use-cases/smart-vehicles-and-transport">recent report</a> that the advent of 5G technology will make roads safer by enhancing vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Sensors embedded in roads, railways and airport runways will make vehicle-to-infrastructure communication smoother as well.
While this may seem like the stuff of our wildest sci-fi fantasies, the reality is closer than ever. This January onwards, self-driving shuttle buses have begun plying one of the busiest areas of Stockholm. Travelling at 24 km per hour, these buses offer a glimpse into the future of urban transport.
Predictably, carmakers are competing against each other to offer the latest technology to customers. At the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 – the global stage for innovation – automotive solution provider Nvidia announced partnerships with several carmakers, including biggies Audi and Volkswagen.
Audi has already showcased an autonomous test car at CES this year, but with Nvidia’s AI solutions, the learning capability of smart cars will be enhanced further.&nbsp;
The new models, with inbuilt computing hardware and software, will hit the markets by 2020.

Nvidia has also partnered with Volkswagen to add ‘intelligent co-pilot’ systems. VW will use Nvidia’s <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/self-driving-cars/drive-ix/">Drive IX Intelligent Experience</a> platform to enable a wide range of features, including voice and facial recognition, gesture control, and safety warnings.
Another automaker that is breaking new grounds in this area is Tesla. It recently introduced TeslaBot, the virtual assistant synced with the Tesla models S and X. The new bot is similar to Tesla’s native app, but offers more in terms of allowing users to interact with their car from a desktop or a phone.
In sync with current technology trends, Uber has already tested its first batch of self-driving smart cars in 2016. It has also formed the <a href="http://uber.ai/">Uber AI Labs</a> to develop self-driving cars with the help of top scientists and engineers.
It seems the days of rude drivers and parking tickets are going to be over soon. Let’s hitch a ride to the future already!
