Recently, the luxury brand announced the one-to-one pairs for this cycle (2020-21).&nbsp;This year the chosen fields for the Arts Initiative include film, theatre, visual arts and an open category. Below is a brief mention of the pairs that will be working closely for the next two years.

In the film category, Spike Lee, the director of the Academy award-winning film Blackklansman will be training Kyle Bell – a filmmaker who worked on the Emmy-winning documentary production Osiyo: Voices of the Cherokee People.
Known for directing the groundbreaking musical and film Mamma Mia!, Phyllida Lloyd will be guiding Whitney White – the artist of positively critiqued theatrical creations like What to Send Up When it Goes Down.
As for visual arts, the multi-talented Carrie Mae Weems, who has executed her skills through her films, performances, scripts and more, has chosen to transfer her wisdom to Camila Rodríguez Triana – a Colombian visual artist whose creations have been displayed on exhibitions across Europe and South America.
Lastly, the well-known and award-winning actor Lin-Manuel Miranda will be working on the open category session. The trainee for this will be announced in March.

Like Death of a Salesman, American writer Arthur Miller’s earlier play, All My Sons, is a portrayal of the ‘American dream’ gone horribly awry. Driven by money and the dream of building a successful business to pass on to his sons, Joe Keller is complicit in a crime that ultimately leaves 21 pilots dead during the height of World War II. For years, he ignores the repercussions and denies any wrongdoing, but his actions later come back to haunt him in ways he never could have anticipated.
All My Sons was written in 1948, but the themes it covers are just as timely as ever. It is a story of deceit and greed, but also of family and country, and love and loss. As one of the highlights of the ongoing 45th Hong Kong Arts Festival, it is now playing at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Lyric Theatre in Wan Chai. The play, put on by Rose Theatre Kingston in London, made its exclusive Asian premiere here.
“There are certain men in the world who rather see everybody hung before they&#8217;ll take blame,” Joe says about his former business partner, who was imprisoned several years earlier for covering up cracks on defective aircraft engines and shipping them out to the war effort. The consequences, of course, were fatal. Joe denied involvement and was exonerated, but continues to remain blind to the fact that the ‘certain man’ he describes is a perfect portrayal of himself – not of his partner, who was only taking orders from Joe to conceal the cracks.
Further complicating matters is the fact that Joe’s elder son, Larry, a pilot in the war, went missing around the same time as the other pilots’ deaths. When the play opens, the audience learns that Larry has been missing for three years, yet his mother, Kate Keller, still holds out hope that he is alive.
Kate is one of the play’s most complex characters. Kate’s refusal to accept Larry’s death becomes a sickness, driving her to madness. She looks everywhere for signs that he is still alive–his horoscope, the fact that his memorial tree was blown over in a storm, newspaper clippings of other missing soldiers returning home years later. Her denial is deeply frustrating but also heartbreaking, as the audience later learns it’s a coping mechanism to avoid accepting an even harsher truth.
“Your brother&#8217;s alive,” Kate tells her younger son, Chris. “Because if he&#8217;s dead, your father killed him. Do you understand me now? God does not let a son be killed by his father.”
And then there’s Chris, the younger Keller son, who wants to marry his brother’s fiancée, Ann – who also happens to be the daughter of Joe’s jailed business partner. For this, he has to come to terms with the guilt of dating “Larry’s girl,” as his disapproving mother calls her, and later the guilt of knowing that his own father is responsible for the ruin of Ann’s father. All of this comes to a head when Ann’s brother, George, confronts Joe, and the Keller family learns how Larry really died.
Without revealing too much, the ending is harrowing – the kind of ending that leaves audiences almost too shaken to gather their wits and applaud the performers, even if the praise is well-deserved. The actor who portrays Joe pulls off the tricky task of getting the audience to sympathise–however slightly–with Joe’s plight. Everything about the play feels real, down to the costumes and the authenticity of the actors’ Midwestern accents (the play takes place near Cincinnati, Ohio).
As said best by the play’s director, Michael Rudman: “I got a good idea of the kind of acting Arthur Miller wanted in the hours I spent with him in auditions and rehearsals for a Broadway production of Death of a Salesman. He wanted actors who were truthful and interesting, but also capable of expressing deep emotion. That is the kind of actor that we wanted for this production.”

‘All My Sons’: a timeless, moving tale of grief and deceit

Fans of the arts are in for a treat in the coming months with a slew of events coming to Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival which runs until 18 March. 
Launched in 1973, the festival showcases opera, theatre, music, dance and more by leading local and international artists.
During this year’s festival, over 1,700 artists from around the world will stage 180 performances, including 16 new works receiving world premieres and 14 Asian premieres.
With so many shows to choose from, picking which ones to see is a bit daunting, unless you have the time to see them all.
To help you decide, we have picked six standout shows to keep even the fussiest of theatre-goers happy.
All My Sons / Theatre

Directed by Michael Rudman, who directed the Tony award-winning play Death of a Salesman on Broadway, All My Sons is based on true events and revolves around love, guilt and greed. 
Like Death of a Salesman, All My Sons was written by Arthur Miller and exposes the corruption of the American dream.
Set during World War II, the play is based around the actions of Joe Keller, a self-made businessman who knowingly supplied the US air force with defective engines, resulting in the deaths of a number of pilots.
The consequences of Joe’s actions come back to haunt him in later life.

Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project:Love and Soul/ Jazz

Do you like Jazz? How about love songs, R&amp;B and soul classics? American drummer Terri Lyne Carrington heads a team of top jazz instrumentalists in a programme featuring all of the above. 
Terri’s set features original compositions, along with homages to Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross, Bill Withers and more.
Terri has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell and Yellowjackets.

Emperor Wu of Han and His Jester Strategist/ Chinese Opera

With the tag line: “Behind every man of power is a man of wit”, Emperor Wu of Han and his Jester Strategist explores the relationship between Emperor Wu and the charismatic and quick-witted courtier Dongfang Shuo during the founding years of the Han dynasty. 
The opera was written by Cantonese opera performer Loong Koon-tin, Lai Yiu-wai, and Chinese opera educator and actor Lau Shun.

A family-friendly performance, Arch 8 Tetris is based on the popular video game of the same name.
This dance performance, however, swaps blocks with human bodies, with four dancers from the Netherlands stacking, flipping and defying gravity to interlock their bodies into shapes.
The dance performance is interactive and audience members are invited to join in.

A Floating Family/ Theatre

A Floating Family is a trilogy of plays featuring some of Hong Kong’s brightest stars. The plays are based around three pivotal moments in the lives of the Wongs. 
A Floating Family portrays four siblings and their extended family over three dinners in the course of two decades. The plays follow the family as they deal with political, economic and social changes in Hong Kong.

Bayerisches Staatsballett (Bavarian State Ballet) La Bayadère/ Dance

The Bavarian State Ballet makes its ﬁrst full-company visit to Hong Kong with this dance performance in an imagined ancient India. 
Spectacular sets and gorgeous costumes evoke an exotic world in which colour and beauty abound.
Also, La Bayadère contains one of the most famous scenes in ballet, ‘The Kingdom of the Shades’ — a procession of white-costumed ballerinas dancing across a moonlit stage.
