A famous blue diamond worn at the 2023 Met Gala by actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas instigated an intense bidding war at Sotheby’s, propelling the final price to balloon above US$25 million (HK$196 million). Laguna Blu, a rare pear-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond of 11.16 carats, had headlined a Bulgari high-jewellery necklace at the gala, but it was auctioned in Geneva as the original ring designed by the Italian jeweller in 1979, set between tapered baguette diamond shoulders.

The exceptional value of a vivid blue diamond reflects, in part, the extraordinary circumstances of their creation. These stones are formed deep below the earth’s mantle, and the disturbance of the crystal lattice is critical in determining their colour. Any traces of boron within the pure carbon structure of the diamond will result in varying shades of blue – enough boron in the stone and the diamond attains the highly prized ‘vivid’ category. Less than 1% of stones achieve this colour, and fewer still have no tint of another colour as coloured diamonds often show some kind of tint of another colour. The price the diamond achieved at auction is an indication of its rareness.

A beautiful gilt-bronze monkey by François-Xavier Lalanne fetched £1.25 million (about HK$12.3 million) at auction in London with bidders stirred by the rare opportunity to obtain one of the French sculptor’s iconic animals. Singe Alternatif SIII was created in 2007, a year before Lalanne’s death, and was one of two Singe (Monkey) figures up for auction at Christie’s – his Singe Alternatif SIV realised just over £1 million.

Animal motifs were integral to Lalanne’s art and formed a substantial part of his oeuvre. Their symbolism captivated him, and he was particularly enamoured with the sheep and the monkey, which he would depict far from their natural habitats. His Singes, smiling serenely, sit atop tables and mantelpieces.

Lalanne developed a love for sculpture as a young man when, as a security guard at the Louvre, he would wander the Antiquities galleries and study the statuary of Ancient Egypt. It was from works like The Seated Scribe and Toth as a Baboon that he gained knowledge and inspiration which undoubtedly shaped his sculptural vocabulary. Only two gilt-bronze pairs of Singes have previously been offered at auction, once in 2020 and again in 2022.

A new auction record for a work by figurative painter Frank Auerbach was set at Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary evening sale in London. Mornington Crescent sold for £5.6 million (about HK$55 million), comfortably surpassing its high estimate of £4.5 million.

Painted in 1969, Mornington Crescent is considered one of Auerbach’s most epic and ambitious landscape works. At 101.4 cm by 152 cm, it is also one of his largest and is firmly rooted in both a geographical and psychological sense of place – in this case, the street in Camden, north London, where the artist has his studio. Scaffold-like bars of paint form rigid structures dramatically conveying a recreated image of the urban environment.

The 92-year-old Berlin-born British painter had a good evening at the ‘Britain’s Visionaries’ auction. All three of his works up for grabs exceeded their estimates: besides the lively bidding that Mornington Crescent sparked, E.O.W. on her Blue Eiderdown VII fetched £4.5 million and J.Y.M. Seated II went for £1.1 million. He has long been fascinated by the subject of Mornington Crescent and the housing developments which started in the 1820s.

The sale of a 1967 Ferrari 412P Berlinetta was a major coup for Bonhams Cars, notching up a whopping US$30.25 million (about HK$237 million). About 1,000 people jostled in the Quail Lodge &amp; Golf Club grounds in Carmel, California, for the best view of a racing car that became the fourth most valuable Ferrari sold at auction and raked in the highest-ever price for Bonhams’ motoring division.

Part of its appeal was undoubtedly its rarity – only two 412Ps were built from scratch. Furthermore, a nine-year-long renovation project restored this beautiful vehicle to its original glory so it could hit the open road. “Thanks to its devoted lineage of owners and the stewardship of its seller, the 412P stands as an enduring piece of art that honours the Ferrari legacy,” commented Bonhams specialist Rupert Banner.

The car has a strong racing history, roaring to third-place finishes in 1967 at Le Mans and the 1000 km of Spa, and seventh spot at Brands Hatch. Charging
Electric cars have several drawbacks and one of them relates to charging of batteries. Although there are more than 350 charging stations in Hong Kong, each station varies by the type of charging ports ranging from normal to quick charge and they are not as convenient to find as petrol stations. It can also take up to to 30 minutes to charge about 80 percent of the battery of an electric time, and this is the fastest. Fully charging a battery under normal charging rates can take up to eight hours.

Battery
Another significant factor to consider is the cost of replacing an electric cars&#8217; battery pack. The best EVs can travel up to 300km or more on a fully-charged battery pack, which is enough to drive from Hong Kong&#8217;s urban areas to the airport. But with the scarcity of charging stations and the time that it takes to charge fully, driving an electric car will likely deter a motorist from travelling outside Hong Kong on long distances without stopping for a recharge. Replacing the battery pack of an electric car can also cost as much as $10,000.

Swanky new BMW Luxury Class Showroom unveiled in the heart of Wanchai

Once, when seeking the ultimate high-octane high, car enthusiasts would assuredly opt for the throaty petrol-powered roar of a V12 engine as it purred below the bonnet of one of the world’s super-specced supercars – a Ferrari, a Bugatti or, perhaps, a Lamborghini. Now, though, for many, such beasts are relics, with their gas-guzzling prowess deemed more sinful than salutary. In this very different era, fuel efficiency trumps Formula One flirtations and a low carbon footprint tops a stylish carbon fibre chassis. This, then, is the age of the highly environmentally-attuned electric hypercars.

In truth, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are far from a new invention. The first-ever battery-powered vehicle actually hit the streets of Scotland around 1837, the product of the fertile mind of Robert Anderson, a local inventor. Fast forward the best part of two centuries though, and EVs are once more seen as the future of rapid, reliable, personal transportation. The lead here was initially taken by such doughty Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) as the Toyota Prius, a car that combined conventional automotive technology with planet-preserving alternatives. Of late, though, it is the more pure-play, all-electric contenders that have begun to surge to the fore.
As a sure sign that the sector is maturing, many luxury motoring marques have eschewed the utilitarian look and feel of earlier models, opting instead to bring a luxury ambience and aggressive performance to hitting the road without negatively impacting the biosphere. Among the current crop of super-speedy EVs, one particular model truly towers above the pack – the Volkswagen ID.R. As initially conceived, its highly-innovative design was geared to deliver on one very specific goal – setting a new world record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, an insanely-challenging 20.8km track in Germany. It’s a target it achieved back in June, when it recorded the fastest lap time ever for an all-electric car, beating the previous record holder by a truly impressive 40 seconds. The ID.R then burnished its already impressive reputation by smashing two more records within a year, both at the Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado and at southern England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Although the ID.R is undeniably the flagship of Volkswagen’s new all-electric ID range, it remains a prototype and has never been produced commercially. The German motoring marque has, however, announced plans to incorporate much of its top-line tech into the 20 electric-powered vehicles that are scheduled to arrive in showrooms over the next few years.

Pininfarina Battista
If the ID.R’s record-breaking performance is to be topped any time soon, it may well be Munich-based Automobili Pininfarina that does the topping. A well-established manufacturer of luxury EVs, its much-anticipated, high-specced Pininfarina Battista is set to roll off the production line later this year. When first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, its promised performance inspired oohs and aahs all around – 0-100kmph in under two seconds, a top speed in excess of 350kmph and an impressive per-charge range of 450km.
Its headline appeal, though, lies in the enormous thrust delivered by its 120kWh lithium-ion battery pack. All told, the Battista is said to be blessed with 1,900bHp, making it the most powerful road-legal car ever to go into production. Putting that figure into perspective, it’s almost a third more than the 1,341bHp that established the Koenigsegg Agera RS as the fastest production car back in 2017. Lovingly crafted from ultra-lightweight carbon fibre and with a production run of just 150, this four-wheel-drive sensation comes with 1969lb-ft of torque as standard and all the latest on-road technology from Rimac, Pininfarina’s sportscar-focussed stablemate. When Rimac Automobili burst onto the super-luxury EV scene with its C_One electric hypercar back in 2013, it seemed the proverbial overnight success story. Spun out of the workshop of Mate Rimac, the brand’s Croatian founder, the C_One’s truly innovative design outshone the works of countless other more famous – and well-funded – marques. What’s more, thanks to this, the services of Rimac Technology are now regularly sought out by other would-be EV supercar brands.
Not one to rest on its laurels, though, the company is expected to launch its follow up – the C_Two – any day now. With an unprecedented 1,914bHp coming as standard, this upgrade is said to go from 0-60mph in just 1.85 seconds, while having a top speed in excess of 250mph. Sleek, streamlined and boasting an eye-catching matte carbon fibre finish, it is to be released in a limited edition of just 150.

Tesla Roadster 2020
No list of the world’s finest electric hypercars would be complete without a Tesla, with the soon-to-be-released 2020 Tesla Roadster more than meriting inclusion in its own right. With its name a nod to the 2008 model that first saw Tesla gain international recognition, hopes are high for this new addition to its roster.
While there’s no word yet as to its likely horsepower, Tesla’s prerelease publicity promises 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of more than 250mph. If these figures have a ring of familiarity, it’s probably because they are very similar to the specs of both the Pininfarina Battista and the Rimac C_Two. Although neither manufacturer is willing to confirm it, for many, it’s clear that the new Musk-driven EV hypercar is seen as very much the one to beat.

However, Musk still has one or two secret bonus features planned that could yet ensure it proves a true gamechanger. Most notably, there is the SpaceX thruster package, a refinement that has been the subject of several of the inventor’s most intriguing tweets. With the world’s foremost EV entrepreneur going as far as to hint that this under-wraps thruster technology could even see the new vehicle one day zoom skywards, it may be that the battle for supremacy amongst environmentally-friendly electric hypercars may truly be about to take off like never before.

Luxuriously crafted and exotically created by France’s Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S, a Volkswagen group subsidiary, it is now officially the most expensive new car ever sold. The 120-year-old Former Marine Police Headquarters, now known as 1881 Heritage, was the venue for a very special car unveiling – that of the all-new Porsche 911. Now in its eight iteration, this iconic speedster superbly blends its traditional heritage with an unmistakably contemporary design.

The new 911 models are fitted with Porsche&#8217;s new generation of flat-six turbocharged engines, whose power is delivered through a newly-developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. For the S type models, this translates to a whopping 450bHp produced – a 30bHp increase to the previous generation – which sees these sportscars zip from 0-100kmph in less than four seconds.

Aware of the demands of driving in today&#8217;s Digital Age, the Porsche 911 models been fitted with cutting-edge technology to ensure ultimate comfort and convenience to its driver, including a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor from which to control the car&#8217;s settings. More interestingly, Porsche has also unveiled the world&#8217;s first Wet mode, designed to detect wet road conditions and adjust for a safe drive experience accordingly. If that weren&#8217;t enough, there&#8217;s also a Night Vision Assist function debuting in the new models, where a thermal imaging camera helps improve vision in the dark.

Iconic Wheels: Eighth generation of iconic Porsche 911 debuts in Hong Kong

The recent Art Basel Hong Kong fair marked the seventh anniversary of the fruitful partnership between the mega art event and renowned German automaker BMW. What can we expect from BMW at Art Basel Hong Kong 2019?
We have a range of activities going on, and one I&#8217;m particularly proud of is the BMW Art Journey. Each year, we bring young emerging artistic talents and give them an opportunity to travel the world as part of this unique art competition. It&#8217;s not just a prize but an opportunity for them to develop as artists. At Art Basel Hong Kong, we&#8217;ve announced the shortlist of potential awardees for the next Art Journey. The winner will be chosen in the coming months. This year, we have three female finalists, which is quite special.

Tell us a little bit about BMW&#8217;s all-new Art Car. What were the inspirations behind its design?
Over the years, we have brought a total of nine BMW Art Cars to Hong Kong, but this year it&#8217;s even more exciting because we have the original Art Car No.1 from 1975. It&#8217;s a particularly special occasion because this was the car that laid the foundation stone for the entire Art Car collection. It was French racer Hervé&nbsp;Poulain who commissioned his friend, the renowned American artist Alexander Calder, to transform on his actual BMW racecar. It is that precise car that is on display at Art Basel Hong Kong, and is the pioneer for a line that now boasts 19 unique models. The Art Car really highlights to blending of creativity and artistic flair with our cars, which evokes emotional responses in people&#8217;s hearts and emotions, much like the world of art.

What&#8217;s can we expect from BMW in 2019? Which new models will be making their debuts?
First and foremost, we will have a range of new models launching in the market. First of all, the new generation of the 3-series. The 3 series for us represents the core of sheer driving pleasure. It&#8217;s the most dynamic and sporty car that we have, and will be coming to Hong Kong very soon. On top of that, this year we&#8217;ll be focussing on the luxury segment. For example, we will bring a revamped version of the 7-series, but also two all-new concept cars – the BMW 8-series and the X7, which will be the first full-size SAV in this luxury segment to be introduced to the market.

Martijn Oremus on the BMW Art Car, Art Journey and what to expect from the carmaker in 2019

When we were first approached by Land Rover about a trip to Norway, we were intrigued. The rugged landscape and picturesque scenery seemed an ideal place to put the latest addition to the Range Rover family of luxury SUVs – the Velar First Edition – through its paces. In a word, adventure sprang to mind, and that’s exactly what it turned out to be.
The charter flight from Farnborough in England to Molde in Norway was spent engrossed in a plethora of highly informative video presentations, photos and spec sheets about the car. Conveniently delivered through distributed iPads, this was a foretaste of the quality and attention to detail we were about to find lined up on the tarmac at Molde Airport. After a short briefing we were allocated cars, and soon we were en route to our first destination, the village of Meringdal.
As far as first impressions go, the Velar made a big one. At 4.8m long, 2.1m wide (including mirrors) and almost 1.7m high, it makes its presence known. The Velar is slightly larger than the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace – measuring 4.7m by 1.9m by 1.7m – but it’s still reassuringly human-scale by SUV standards. The nearly 1,250-litre (44 cubic foot) boot space easily accommodated our luggage, and we were soon on the road.
We felt a slight squeeze while passing oncoming vehicles on the narrow roads leading to the airport’s exit, but thanks to the sensors in the car’s wing mirrors displaying tracking status and alerts, confident handling and a sense of the car’s dimensions came quickly.
The cabin and dashboard layout are a testament to refined simplicity – a true triumph of ergonomic design. Within minutes we were happily playing with the entertainment system and exploring other settings and features on the two centrally-located 10.5-inch HD touchscreens. With a windscreen heads-up display showing navigation, tracking, speed and speed limits, we were soon comfortably cruising through the beautiful scenery of rural Norway.
After a delicious lunch in an idyllic setting in Meringdal, we were on the road again to the Storfjord Hotel, named after the municipality where it’s located. Unfortunately there are few motorways in that part of Norway and we were itching to open up and see what the powerful and innovative Ingenium 2-litre engine could do. A couple of chances to overtake slower-moving vehicles later on gave us a taste of the raw power under the hood. And impressive it was, letting us quickly and safely pass dawdlers with a throaty roar, leaving them in our wake.
Zero to 100kph in 5.7 seconds for the 3-litre V6 petrol version is impressive for a car of this size, and the 8-speed automatic gearbox was so smooth that gear changes were hardly noticeable. Even during the brief patches of rain we encountered, road holding was firm and solid, and braking was smoothly incremental.

To succinctly sum up the Velar – it just works. It seems to be a car that can take anything you throw at it. This impression was borne out when we got to Salmon Wharf, where we were greeted by an odd arrangement of misshapen ramps, sloping walls and a giant hump. As a driver with little off-road experience it was exhilarating, if not a bit terrifying, to drive around this obstacle course and see exactly what this car could do.
This demonstration afforded us a close-up look at the Velar in its off-road driving mode with the double wishbone front and integral link rear suspension (air or coil springs and continuously variable dampers). We also got to witness the torque on-demand all-wheel drive in full action. The Velar proved to be a car that can take it fast and sharp or slow and steady with equal mastery. 
During pre-dinner drinks at the hotel, a short presentation was given about the design of the car. Here we were told about the designers’ aspirations to reduce visual noise and clutter, following the concept of reductionism. This is best exemplified by the flush fit door handles and slim-line Matrix-Laser LED headlights. The overall integrity and minimalism in the Velar’s waistline is one of the most attractive aspects of its exterior design.
The sleekness of the First Edition is impressive too. Its relatively low height was achieved by making adjustments to the suspension in order to increase ground clearance to suit the terrain. This allowed designers to move away from the boxy look of the early Range Rovers. Window height is also minimal, further adding to the impression of a big, powerful beast ploughing through the elements.
The lines of the car perfectly accentuate the streamlining. The base line at chassis height slopes gently upward towards the rear and incorporates the geometry of the front air intakes and additional rear lights, as well as the wheel arches and side panel contours.
The waistline, with an even gentler upward slope, brilliantly integrates the front grille, headlight, bonnet edges, rear lights and the elegantly badged boot lid lip.
The bonnet and roof silhouette complete the picture with the roof-line sloping down towards the stern, creating the impression of a bulbous front with a sleekly tapered tail. Indeed, the car is topologically similar to a tear drop – the geometrical ideal for streamlining.

This reductionist theme also extends to the car’s interior. The dual HD touchscreens – plus an additional dashboard and heads-up display – keep knobs and buttons to a minimum and make for a clean and simple yet highly functional and intuitive layout. As is often the case with luxury vehicles, adding devices via Bluetooth or USB was simple and straightforward. Four USB charging sockets, all centrally located, are an added convenience for passengers.
So why might a driver in Hong Kong opt for the new Range Rover Velar? The city isn’t exactly known for its off-road driving scene. If you had to take your child to hospital in the middle of a typhoon it would certainly be a good choice, but that’s not a scenario that pops up too often.
Off-road adventure isn’t the only thing the Velar has to offer, though. A big, sturdy vehicle with the full compliment of on-board safety features, it’s a car that’s enjoyable to drive under any road conditions.
For comfort and roominess, as well as the feeling of sheer luxury, the Velar has a lot to offer. While the price tag may not be too much of an issue in such a wealthy city, Hong Kong people still want value for money.
Starting at around HK$800,000, or $1.45 million for the top model, the Velar is top-of-the-range in price in Hong Kong. The premium Porsche Macan Turbo starts at HK$1.34 million, but bear in mind that the Velar comes with premium features as standard – not to mention the satisfaction of owning the first of a completely new breed.
For those that simply must have the latest and greatest, the Velar First Edition may become an irresistible choice.

Mercedes Benz opted for Victoria Harbour as the ideal setting for the Hong Kong launch of its four new S-class models. With riders on the 60-metre high Observatory Wheel looking on, some 800 specially-invited guests enjoyed lavish entertainment in an exclusive marquee as the high-end German motor marque paraded the latest additions to its range.
With the spotlight on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class models, a DJ, a dance troupe and an orchestral ensemble did their very best to convey the level of technological innovation and sensorial comfort embodied in these new vehicles. Of particular interest to local motor enthusiasts, of course, was the newly Cantonese-friendly Linguatronic voice control system, while the level of autonomous on-road assistance that comes as standard clearly takes us a step or two closer to driverless cars joining the Hong Kong contraflow.
Introducing the new range, Andreas Binder, President and Chief Executive of Mercedes Benz Hong Kong, said: “For me, one of the absolute highlights of these new models is the Magic Body Control system, which scans the road in front and adjusts the damping of each wheel ahead of any bump. Truly magical.”

Volvo launched the XC60, its premium SUV in the midsized car category, in an all-new avatar at the Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong recently.
After debuting at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the new XC60 has received rave reviews from both customers and car critics in Europe and accounts for 30% of Volvo’s global sales today.
For the Hong Kong market, Volvo has released three variants of the XC60 model – Momentum, Inscription and R-design.
To mark the occasion, Volvo invited popular TV personality Priscilla Wong to join the unveiling and toasting ceremony, along with Volvo’s top management in Hong Kong.
According to Priscilla, Volvo’s XC60 would be a natural choice for anyone looking for the safest, most stylish, best-in-class SUV.
Indeed, the XC60’s CitySafety™ feature gives it a definite edge over other competitors due to its highly developed visual and auditory warning signals and automatic braking.
In terms of exterior design, its slender LED lights give it a sleek look, which is a change from other rugged-looking SUVs.
The interior décor comes with driftwood trimmings in the top model, while the other variants have iron ore and metal mash trimmings.
