Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 promises to be an extravaganza marking a return to its pre-pandemic glory years. Boosted by a huge uptick in exhibitor numbers, this year’s fair is the perfect vehicle to shine a spotlight on the region’s art scene and beyond, from collectable rediscoveries to works by contemporary practitioners. The social side of the art fest, an inspiring mingling of artists, curators, gallerists, connoisseurs and general enthusiasts, will also be back to its upbeat best within the cavernous environs of the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Exemplified by a strong presence of galleries from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, more than half of exhibitors operate spaces on the Asian continent. Notable galleries from Australia, New Zealand and India, among other countries, will showcase their artistic talent too. Art Basel will also present a city-wide programme of events and activities in collaboration with galleries, world-class institutions and cultural partners during show week – from 26-30 March including two preview days before the fair itself.

“Our goal is to connect guests from all around the world in our home, Hong Kong, by offering possibilities of collaboration and innovation inspired by art and artists,” says Art Basel Hong Kong Director Angelle Siyang-Le. “As the key strategic cultural hub in Asia and Asia-Pacific, the city plays a more important role than ever in bridging the evolving art landscape across regions.”



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Broad strokes</h3>



To put this year’s offering into perspective, there is a 37 percent increase in exhibitor numbers compared to 2023. This equates to 243 international galleries including more than 65 names that didn’t pitch up last year, a participation level that matches numbers before Covid took its toll on the event. Galleries from 40 countries and territories across Asia, Europe, North and Latin America, the Middle East and Africa will present artworks spanning all market segments, from 20th-century masters to established contemporary artists to emerging voices that are making waves on the scene.

Organisers promise that diversity will be paramount, with textile art one of the key inclusions. In just two standouts dealing in this medium, London gallery Alison Jacques dedicates its booth to Sheila Hicks’ pioneering use of fabric and thread, and Shanghai’s Bank showcases the works of Bulgarian artist Maryn Varbanov, who influenced Chinese avant-garde.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Return to the fold</h3>



Respected names returning after a hiatus include Galerie Lelong &amp; Co. Known for showing works by internationally established artists, the gallery was founded in Paris in 1981 by Daniel Lelong, Jacques Dupin and Jean Frémon, and opened a New York sister space four years later. Also making an appearance are Italian heavyweight Galleria d’Arte Maggiore and Kurimanzutto from Mexico.

Another returnee, India’s Experimenter, won the 2023 Frieze London Stand Prize for best gallery representation. Based on a grid concept, it showcased the abstract works of an intergenerational group of eight women artists in a perfect reflection of the passage of time. Frieze hailed Experimenter’s programme a “pace-setter” for the South Asian region.

Other notable attendees from the Indian subcontinent include Vadehra Art Gallery from New Delhi, and Tarq and Jhaveri Contemporary, both from Mumbai. Tarq will present art by Mumbai-born Sameer Kulavoor that explores the effects of the Indian megalopolis’ urban growth on its inhabitants, while Jhaveri’s space displays paintings, drawings and sculptural garlands that function as decorative devices.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">New blood</h3>



A total of 25 galleries from across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas will join the fair for the first time. One such is Station, which debuted in Melbourne in 2011 and expanded to Sydney in 2019; it is dedicated to presenting engaging, conceptually-driven exhibitions and bringing Australian contemporary art to an international audience.

Another first-timer, Tim Van Laere Gallery, was founded in Antwerp in 1997 and represents international and emerging contemporary artists. Linseed is not only a newcomer to Art Basel Hong Kong, but also to the art world in general. Launched in 2022, the Shanghai gallery supports a new generation of forward-looking artists from a multitude of backgrounds and invites cutting-edge conversations.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Digital diversity</h3>



Digital art – highly prominent during the pandemic years – retains its important presence now the fair can resume human contact and tactile appreciation. Highlights include a presentation by Tokyo gallery Taro Nasu of works by visual and sound artist Ryoji Ikeda, and from Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder of Vienna, an AI-created film conceived by New York-based Miao Ying that was shortlisted for last year’s Sigg Prize.

Among galleries focusing on the 20th-century masters and exceptional historical works, Liang Gallery from Taipei pays tribute to the late abstract painter Hsiao Chin. Axel Vervoordt Gallery, which has spaces in both Antwerp and Hong Kong, participates in the main fair for the first time with a showcase by multi-disciplinary conceptual artist Kimsooja that combines performance, film, photographs and site-specific installation using textiles, light and sound.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Creations and curations</h3>



Supplementing the rich line-up of participants is the Discoveries section, where 22 galleries this year have been singled out to present solo works by emerging artists specifically created for the fair. Topics tackled here include urban development and the shifting nature of public space in the modern age.

Embracing 20 galleries, the Insights programme of curated projects spotlights artists from Asia-Pacific active from 1900 to the present day. First-time exhibitor √K Contemporary of Tokyo brings Nankoku Hidai, an influential figure in avant-garde 20th-century calligraphy, to the fore. Taipei gallery PTT Space shows works by the late master Shiy De-Jinn, whose oeuvre openly explored the theme of desire, testifying to his status as a queer pioneer in East Asia.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Close encounters</h3>



Last year’s Art Basel Hong Kong saw the return of all special sectors, including Kabinett, Encounters, Film and Conversations. Displayed in a separate section of selected galleries’ booths, Kabinett showcases a record 33 thematically-focused projects for 2024, focusing on modern and contemporary solo presentations from the region.

Encounters, curated for the third time by Alexie Glass-Kantor of Artspace Sydney, is dedicated to large-scale projects and spans 16 artworks, 11 of which were made especially for the fair. An off-site installation by Sydney-based artist Daniel Boyd will be on view at Pacific Place.

Free to the public, the Conversations and Film programmes give audiences a unique opportunity to partake in discussions and enjoy artists’ films in a dedicated auditorium at the Convention and Exhibition Centre. The pick of the latter is probably A New Old Play (2021) by Shenzhen-based artist and filmmaker Qiu Jiongjiong. Presented by Star Gallery of Beijing, it depicts a prominent clown reminiscing about his life, set against the backdrop of China’s tumultuous 20th-century history.

As the name suggests, ink art is artwork that is drawn and painted using ink. Ink artists usually use dip pens or reservoir pens for their paintings. It is an art form with a rich history, and while it has gone through so many changes and does not fit a specific mould, it does hold on to a tinge of traditional influence.&nbsp;

Turning your attention to its history and evolution, ink art is easily one of the oldest art forms, dating back to the Tang Dynasty [618 &#8211; 907AD] and the term was first coined by Chinese musician Wang Wei.
Centuries later, precisely in the 20th century, the rise of Western art made it essential for Chinese art to be preserved. It also sparked the Eastern vs. Western art conversations and other movements.
One such was the Hong Kong New Ink Painting Movement which was started by Lui Shou-Kwan in the 1960s. The movement saw ways to develop ink art by borrowing from its history and combining it with the things that artists learned from nature. Perfectly depicting this is Lui’s series of paintings called the Zen paintings which represented Chinese philosophy while also bringing some focus to Western ideologies.&nbsp;

Another prominent figure in the evolution of ink art is Taiwan’s Liu Guosong. He proposed that artists should give importance to traditional concepts and exude it in their work rather than being completely influenced by Western ones. He did believe that there should be a certain amount of western influence, and this was Liu’s way of modernising traditional Chinese ink art.
In his efforts to develop ink art, Liu introduced concepts such as ‘The Life of a Revolutionary Pen’.

Then, following the Cultural Revolution in Mainland China, Western art started entering the country and began strongly impacting the country’s art scene. This started the &#8217;85-New Movement that focused on bringing prominence to ink art. During this time, Liu Guosong’s artwork was widely displayed in galleries.
After going through centuries of evolution, now in the 21st century, ink art has broken away from many confinements and has taken many forms including sculptors, digital art, videos, and more. Some contemporary ink artists to note are Nakatani Suisen, Zhang Xiaoli, Nan Qi, Lee Chu-Yi, and Tseng Chien-Ying.&nbsp;

Contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her avant-garde paintings and sculptures, and her choice of bright and colourful palette attributes that M+ will no doubt be highlighting in its coming showcase of more than two hundred of the artist’s works. Among these, are many of her more recent works, including Pumpkin, Death of Nerves, and Dots Obsession &#8211; Aspiring to Haven’s Love.&nbsp;

Some 500 years ago, the Jiajing Emperor wished to become immortal. To be fair, he has kind of got what he sought courtesy of the Hong Kong Museum of Arts, with the venerable institution having organised a Jiajing Emperor-themed exhibition that brings to life the history of his dynasty through 240 intricately designed ceramics, portraits, and other art forms. Among the highlights of the exhibition is, undoubtedly, a blue porcelain collection set out on a 14-metre-long table by Angel Hui Hoi-kiu.

What’s On? Things to do this March in Hong Kong

Art Basel Hong Kong returns after a year off site. Given the on-going travel restrictions and social distancing measures, the city&#8217;s premier international art fair Art Basel Hong Kong is introducing a new hybrid format to the 2021 event. In a wholly new hybrid-format for the city&#8217;s biggest annual art fair, the programme will launch a combination its digital platform Art Basel Live: Hong Kong to complement its physical fair, presenting a unique overview of the diverse art scenes from around the world with a close focus on historical and experimental works of art in various mediums by both established and emerging artists and galleries. The art fair, which will run between 21 to 23 May will be the fair&#8217;s first major exhibition since the pandemic in 2019.

An impressive line up of galleries 
Art Basel Hong Kong 2021 will feature 104 participating galleries from 23 countries from around the world. The main sector will present 86 galleries with a close focus on experimental works. For the 56 international galleries that could not attend the fair due to travel restrictions, satellite booths staffed with a local representative appointed by Art Basel have been set up to amplify the visibility of its partnering international exhibitors.
A new hybrid format 
The hybrid format of Art Basel Hong Kong 2021 will include standalone as well as shared booths at its usual location at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, while its digital platform titled Art Basel Live: Hong Kong will give virtual viewers access to Online Viewing Rooms, a program of special events, live-streamed tours, broadcasts and virtual walkthroughs, bringing audiences from around the world together.
Exclusive online content 
The specially launched Art Basel Live: Hong Kong will highlight exclusive content for its online viewers, from live broadcasts featuring&nbsp;Takashi Murakami,&nbsp;Su Xiaobai,&nbsp;Theaster Gates, and collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, as well as exciting programmes such as unveiling rare artworks being taken out of their crates, and live-streamed tours of other cultural and art events around Hong Kong. Among the list of online programmes to look out for is the ‘The Art Market 2021: China Focus’, which will cover the most recent developments in China, the world’s second-biggest art market. 

Where to go 
For the physical event, the Art Basel exhibition will be held in its usual location at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 21 to 23 May, while a daily broadcast shot at from the venue will be live-streamed on Art Basel&#8217;s website and&nbsp;Facebook page to its global audience every day at 8pm, as well as&nbsp;on Chinese platforms Yitiao and Zai Art.&nbsp;Ticketing price start from HK$200. 

Social distancing measures 
Visitors of the in-person of the Art Basel fair may have to wait in line for a given amount of time as the venue will be applying social distancing measures, limiting to a controlled number of visitors within the hall at any given time. Upon entering, the exhibition hall, all visitors are expected to scan the event&#8217;s QR code on the LeaveHomeSafe app or use an electronic registration form to record details of all visitors&#8217; attendance.

Wei Ligang Showcases Chinese Ink and Acrylic

Internationally renowned Chinese calligrapher, Wei Ligang showcases Silent Mountains, Meandering River in his third solo exhibition at Alisan Fine Arts.&nbsp;&nbsp;The event presents 14 of his latest Chinese ink and acrylic on paper works, created specially for this exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is a symbolism of the “circuitous and gentle thoughts of Chinese people.” Wei is best known for his abstract paintings that combine traditional and modern calligraphy. This will mark Wei’s third solo exhibition at the gallery.

As the world remains far from normal, Art Basel 2020 organizers have once again, wisely opted to switch to digital platforms this September and October. This year’s grand edition of the art show will re-open its Online Viewing Rooms in two tightly focused thematic virtual exhibitions.

Art Basel&#8217;s first-ever online art exhibition in March this year quashed all uncertainties of hosting the biggest art event in Hong Kong through a virtual experience that attracted 250,000 viewers. The June edition featured 282 of the world&#8217;s leading galleries and a range of artworks from video installations to paintings and sculptures from 4000 artists. The global platform enables collectors and art enthusiasts to continue pursuing the value of art even amid the most adverse of times. Art Basel global director Marc Spiegler expressed that their decision to go viral reflects the significant responsibility that the art platform holds in continuing its support for galleries, especially amid the ongoing trying times.

The virtual viewing rooms intends to bring together its global network of collectors and exhibitors in an effort to inspire and extend the support of art enthusiasts and collectors.&nbsp;Both online exhibitions will tightly focus on thematic concepts over four days each, firstly featuring artworks created this year at the OVR:2020 from September 23 to 26 and again at the OVR:20c, where artworks tracing back to the early 20th century between 1900 and 1999 will be featured on October 28 to 31.

Both online viewing rooms will showcase six works at a time by no more than 100 exhibitors. The new live-chat feature will enable viewers to pose questions and enquiries about artworks to galleries directly, enabling a seamless experience for virtual visitors to engage with the exhibitors. The first 48 hours of each virtual exhibition will be exclusive to Art Basel&#8217;s VIP guests.

For the 15th consecutive year, the Tai Kok Tsui Temple&nbsp;Fair returns to Hong Kong with its joyous celebration&nbsp;of Hung Shing, the God of the Sea. With all the action&nbsp;taking place just a few minutes from Mong Kok, attendees&nbsp;can expect to spend the day wholly immersed in traditional&nbsp;Chinese arts and culture. The day begins, of course, with a&nbsp;grand parade, complete with sparkly costumes, acrobatic&nbsp;mayhem and a display of percussion perfection. In the&nbsp;evening, the organisers promise 18 dancing lions and at&nbsp;least one 500-foot-long dragon&nbsp;winding its way through the&nbsp;streets. This, it’s fair to say,&nbsp;is no ordinary itinerary.

Once again, the Hong Kong E-Prix is&nbsp;on track to supply the need-for-speed&nbsp;crowd with an air-punching display of&nbsp;Gen2 racecars, with&nbsp;a number of on- and&nbsp;off-road surprises&nbsp;also promised for&nbsp;all keen automobile&nbsp;aficionados. With 22&nbsp;drivers and 11 teams,&nbsp;this is by far the&nbsp;biggest race to date,&nbsp;and, as if that weren’t enough, this year&nbsp;also marks the debut of Attack Mode,&nbsp;a facility that allows drivers to reach a&nbsp;top speed of 225kmph – 25kmph faster&nbsp;than any past E-Prix has been able to&nbsp;deliver. Thankfully, not one to overlook&nbsp;the environment, this year’s event is&nbsp;skewed towards all-electric vehicles and&nbsp;will provide a gripping update on all the&nbsp;latest developments in this dynamic field.

If you’re looking for a way to entertain&nbsp;the kids, while not having too shabby&nbsp;a time yourself, pencilling in a trip&nbsp;to Disneyland’s Springtime Carnival&nbsp;may well be in order. Yes, one of Hong&nbsp;Kong’s “most magical places” – at&nbsp;least according to the House of Mouse&nbsp;PR machine – is set to have Mickey&nbsp;and Co celebrate the season with a&nbsp;characterful egg-hunt, a fantasy parade,&nbsp;and, of course, an enchanting Easter&nbsp;carnival. Fortuitously opening just in&nbsp;time for the festivities is the brand new&nbsp;projection show We Love Mickey!,&nbsp;which apparently has cutting-edge visual&nbsp;effects by the bucketload. Hah, take&nbsp;that, Ocean Park!

Get your palate prepped as the fourday&nbsp;Taste of Hong Kong food festival is&nbsp;under starter’s orders and taking orders&nbsp;for starters. With 60 delicious dishes on&nbsp;offer and 12 of the city’s leading eateries&nbsp;participating, opting for the best course&nbsp;may not be as simple as it sounds. This&nbsp;year, the event is welcoming a number of&nbsp;first-timers – including The Flying Elk and&nbsp;Old Bailey – as well as seeing the return&nbsp;of several old favourites, most notably&nbsp;Chôm Chôm and Zuma. Veteran or virgin,&nbsp;however, the central appeal remains the&nbsp;same – the chance to see world-class&nbsp;chefs in action during a series of live&nbsp;demonstrations.

Asia’s premier art fair returns with works&nbsp;from all the very finest artists of five&nbsp;different continents, while retaining a&nbsp;particular emphasis on Asia and Asia-Pacific creatives, with their works&nbsp;accounting for some 50 percent of the&nbsp;total on display. March Events in Hong Kong: A round-up of this month’s must-see events

The fifth edition of Art Basel has opened its doors to art lovers in Hong Kong and this year’s fair is bigger than ever with 242 galleries from 34 countries.
Visitors to the fair can explore more than six different sections.
The Galleries section is hosting 190 modern art and contemporary exhibitors. The Insights section features 27 projects showcasing artists from Asia and the Asia Pacific region, and over 25 galleries are presenting exhibitions in Discoveries.
Encounters is dedicated to showing large-scale exhibits. Kabinett is a new section this year showcasing curated exhibitions in an architecturally delineated space within their booths.
