A Global Influence 
Roca’s presentation of the Ona collection first appeared at the 60th edition of Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone this year, proving the brand’s leading influence&nbsp;in the world of sanitary ware design.

Located in the idyllic neighbourhood of Kau To Shan, the unit is an embodiment of minimalist design, making room for inspiration and the refined taste of its owners’ to stand out, while showcasing the panaromic views of the home’s surrounding landscape and natural beauty, courtesy of the unit’s cleverly placed floor-to-ceiling windows.
To realise the client’s dream home, Mary Cheung, art director for Grande Interior Design, has thoughtfully planned this duplex house with comfort and functionality in mind, while the aesthetics follow a soft theme through tastefully muted colours and reflective surfaces. Occupying a generous 1800 sq ft, the space lets in plenty of natural light, making the rooms appear even more spacious. White and beige being the dominant colours in the palette, the frames of windows, ceiling, cabinets, balustrade and mirrors are kept darker to create a contrast and engender a more stylish, sharper look.

Cavernous Creation 
Stepping inside the capacious foyer, one can’t help but notice an artisan brown glass chandelier hanging through a recessed opening in the ceiling. The entrance is highlighted with a glass mirror and metal featured on the pure white wall making it a focal point. One side of the area has a small storage space that blends in with the walls, tastefully done to match the mix of colours. Just next to these slender storage cabinets is a dusky framed glass screen, separating the stairs from the foyer and maintaining privacy.

Moving further along is a cavernous living room, which incorporates an adjoining dining area and bar at the far end. The edges of the ceiling, cabinets and shelves in between are curved and refined for a smoother impression of the minimalist design. To fit the theme of a flowing style, the carpet, table tops and a feature wall peeking underneath the cabinets, all have a marble pattern. Nothing in the room is too linear and direct, even the sculptures and art pieces are round and curvy. Simplicity and minimalist design is evident in every nook and corner of the house, but the aesthetics and exquisiteness are never compromised.

A long ice-white carpet flows through the living room to the dining area so as to unify both spaces into one, looking like a fluid reflection of the white ceiling above. The lush green trees and hills outside feel like an extension of the living room because of their unobstructed views through the amply proportioned windows. The soothing sense of freshness is tangible here, making it a perfect place for a chill afternoon in solitude or to enjoy a hearty meal with friends and family.
The discerning layout of both floors distinguishes them in their functionality and visual appeal. While the ground floor is more of an open space, the floor above is more spatially constrained – private and measured – giving each bedroom and the multipurpose bedroom their own ambiance.

A characteristic feature of the dining area is a sophisticated floral-shaped pendant light hanging above the dining table, creating a dynamic visual effect. The placement is such that it marks the centre of the overall ceiling making it a chief feature of the entire space. The reformed open kitchen island next to the dining area is an ideal place to prepare meals while looking out the window at the natural world beyond.

The elegant wooden winder stairs from the living room take you to the floor above and lead to a versatile area nestled between the two bedrooms. As the home was renovated for a couple with a grown daughter, the designer turned two small guestrooms into one multipurpose room which now serves both as an area for family gathering and as a guest room when friends come over. It can be closed and opened through a sliding door depending on the occasion – either becoming part of the hallway or a private space to read or meditate.

The master bedroom exudes elegance with its earth tone palette and beige combinations. The décor is classic yet minimalist, giving the room a monochromatic feel with subtle light contrasts The bedroom’s cosy mood invites one to unwind and relax, offering a sanctuary to forget worries and connect with one’s own deeper essence. The storage space in the room is only for the essentials and the dresser table is extending towards the cabinet – giving it all a sense of movement and purpose. The master bedroom also features a balcony for its fortunate dweller to bask in the verdant views beyond, surrounded by fresh air with a soothing cup of hot brew in hand.

The desk adjoining the wardrobe has a generous view of the green outdoors making it a space that inspires creativity and drives imagination. The glass sphere shaped pendants on the side tables and the stone textured headboard establish this room as the epitome of opulence.

A tour a round a sublime 1800 square-feet home in St. Mortiz

While some prefer their dwelling to be an ostentatious statement of wealth and power, others prefer a more subtle form of indulgence. An exemplary example is this Tai Tam home, spanning 2000 exquisite sq ft within the Pacific View residential complex. Home to a family of four, the brief here was to evoke an understated sense of luxury, taking on more pared back features and toned-down hues to highlight the joy of simplicity, comfort and the intimacy of a convivial space.

Key to transforming the space into a cosy family abode, was designing with comfort and functionality in mind. Given the homeowners’ background – their warm and modest personalities, coupled with a cultured taste for elegance and sophistication – Wanson Wan, director of Wams Design, chose to embody those characteristics throughout the apartment, comprising a living-cum-dining room, balcony, laundry room, and four spacious bedrooms.
“The homeowners”, Wan said, “wanted a space that was classy. Something that resembled a hotel suite, but not too lavish in style either. Special attention was given particularly to their two children’s rooms, while the kitchen was also given priority to effectively layout an efficient space to cook family meals.” The result: A seamless flow of beautiful, yet functional, spaces that beckoned the family and their guests with a warm welcome each time they set foot in the home.

Fist stepping into the main area, in place of entertainment consoles and a television as the anchor of the living space, a simple coffee table stands between the sofa and lounge chair facing a display shelf of books and art pieces – hinting at the homeowners’ preference for intimate connection. Here, the boundless views of large framed windows that stretch across the length of the apartment serves as the focal point of the area. Framed by the black boarder of the windows and spotlighted by the LED lights that line up both top and bottom edges of the windows, the serene seascape of the pristine waters of Tai Tam Bay evokes a colour-infused artwork in a gallery.

Reflecting the natural palette of the view outside, the bespoke rug, floral arrangement and paintings on the wall conjure up airy and almost poetic nautical ambience that was said to set the art direction of the overall design. This was achieved by carefully selecting the most ideal materials, furniture and decor from a myriad of luxury brands and a huge library of materials to sample. The living room, bathroom and hallway, for example, is fitted with a combination of top-graded stone, wood and sumptuous fabric that sets the tone throughout the home. Meanwhile, warm colours from decorative touches of artworks, floral arrangement and furnishing contrast the cooler, airy tones of the ceilings and walls. The lighting, too, was a thoughtfully added layer for depth, where décor was minimal, whether it is the pendant light above the dining table or LED lights that line the boarders of the windows and bathroom mirrors.

Moving towards the kitchen, here is where the lady of the house spends her time cooking up recipes for the family. As a full-time mom, this space serves as a work station for all her passionate culinary creations and wondrous experimentations. Not to mention that the size of the space was considerably wide in length, instead of the typical width that most kitchens are structured in. So, Wan had given thought to the placement of each cooking equipment and tool in a layout that would afford the owners maximum efficiency to prep, cook and clean.

Stepping into the more intimate quarters of the home, the master en suite continues the same theme of muted luxury and airy, white-and-blue colour palette as the living space. Meanwhile, the master bathroom, complete with a bathtub and his-and-her sinks, features metallic tones and glass panels that expand the sense of spaciousness and modern charm.

However, it was in the planning of the children’s bedrooms that extra attention to detail was served. Contrary to the clean lines of the main family room, the children’s chambers boast fun-filled décor, activity platforms and consoles that define the various zones for playing, reading, studying and sleeping.
Designed with loosely spaced furniture, open book shelves, and an easily accessible storage system for a safe, flexible and versatile area, this was deliberately done to, not only prompt the children to move and explore independently, but to also allow them to learn the responsibility of cleaning up their own personal space.

The building itself fleetingly held the record for the most expensive apartment in the world, in which a flat could set you back anywhere upwards of HK$188 million. Here, nestled on the higher floors of one of the city’s most prestigious residential high rises&nbsp;is a residence that literally glows with sophistication as it encapsulates the stylish taste and lavish lifestyle of its owner.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Filling 2,476sq.ft of space with ease and comfort, the recently renovated three-bedroom home embraces contemporary Italian furniture, crystal decoration and high-end smart technology – a winning combination made possible by the talents of Danny Chiu. Going above and beyond the usual, the award-winning interior designer approached this assignment from a singular perspective, imagining himself as a tailor crafting a one-of-a-kind evening gown.

But a home as beautiful as this does not come without its challenges. The project took Chiu almost two years to complete, from drawing inspiration from fashion magazines as he researched to designing the floor plan and creating mock ups, and from sourcing some of the rarest materials he has ever used to painstaking construction.
From the first step inside, the design flows seamlessly. Grey maple wood defines the walls and ceiling of the open layout in an ample living area. Cool beige tones impart a clean-lined, earthy feel of modern luxury enhanced by charming oriental touches and colour accents. Strokes of blue enliven the designer rug; Baccarat crystal flashes from multiple surfaces as it catches the light; and delicate champagned-hued gold leaf highlights the curvature of the ceiling and feature wall.

In this space of undoubted refinement, the granite floor takes precedence. The unique veins traversing the stone evoke a calming sense of movement, from foyer to sitting room to dining area, then leading the line of sight to the idyllic harbour view. This feat of inventive grounding saw Chiu travel to several places and collect countless samples in order to achieve the perfect fit and design for the home.
Dressed in Fendi and Vissionaire, the lush furnishings were also arranged with care and consideration. From the television and bar cabinets to the dining table and upholstery, all the fittings were handmade in Italy and customised in the correct colours and exacting designs to match the interior theme.

Behind a pair of sliding doors in the wall of windows on one side of the room is a quiet garden-themed oasis. The balcony provides an intimate, relaxing space in which to unwind with a glass of wine while surveying stunning vistas of Victoria Harbour and the city skyline.

Moving from the elegance of the living area to the more private quarters, the main bedroom called for comprehensive restructuring and expansion. “In order to make best use of the space and balance the proportions of the room to serve the needs of the owner, the en-suite bathroom was enlarged, and the walls between the original master bedroom and cloakroom were torn down,” reveals Chiu.

The floors, walls and counters of the bathroom were completely redesigned with granite and Dornbracht fittings, while the bedroom was furbished to echo the opulent aesthetics of the living room. Aureate and metallic trims add a layer of depth here and provide contrast to the cool, airy tones that emanate from the abundant maple wood cladding and natural light spilling through dual-aspect windows. Breathtaking sea views stretch from the side of the bed to the back of the suite where the dressing room lies, shelved with a collection of Hermès accessories.

But beyond the timeless beauty, resplendent décor and custom-made Italian furnishings, the apartment’s most impressive feature is surely the cutting-edge technology that elevates the day-to-day experience at home. Installing a smart living system has allowed the owner to possess full control of everyday electronics with ease and convenience. For example, switchable glass in the en-suite bathroom variously permits privacy when it is occupied, and affords more breathing room in the master chamber.
The consistent details that flow harmoniously from entryway to bedroom and everywhere else in between are somehow reminiscent of how one might trace the smooth ripples of satin on a glamorous gown: sumptuous to the touch and everlasting in impression – a true dream.

As the founder of Panorama Design Group, Horace Pan explores exciting new domains in interior architecture. As a university educator, his mission is to help the next generation of designers build a distinctive Hong Kong identity&#8230;
Tell us about your early years. 
I’m Indonesian-Chinese, though I was born in China as my parents had emigrated there from Indonesia in the ’60s. Because of all the uncertainty during the Cultural Revolution, they wanted to relocate to their homeland via Hong Kong. Ultimately, they never made it all the way, and I’ve pretty much spent my whole life here. The international influences of my childhood have really left their mark on me, giving me a unique perspective that informs my work as an interior designer.

What led you to found Panorama Design Group? 
I practised interior design for seven years before starting Panorama. Then I had a gut feeling that I should explore new domains of interior design and new methodologies, taking a different approach to what I was already doing. I thought the best way to accomplish this was to found my own company.
Does your firm have a particular area of speciality? 
Panorama is headquartered in Hong Kong, with branches across Chinese cities such as Shenzhen and Chengdu, as well as an upcoming location in Malaysia. We specialise in many different domains of interior design across the region. We do hotels, club houses and F&amp;B venues, for example, and health- and wellbeing-oriented spaces, so we are pretty multi-disciplinary and also cover many different topologies of space.

What would you say are the unique selling points of Panorama? 
It’s really in the name itself, and for us ‘Panorama’ means ‘wide-angled’ and ‘full-spectrum’, so I would like my team to have a different, unexpected approach to any projects and initiatives we collaborate on. Let’s take a hotel, for example. We don’t want to follow the traditional precepts of design, but rather focus on creating a kind of crossover experience. This is exactly what we did for MeeHotel in Shenzhen last year, a project that’s garnered us 12 international awards so far, with several judges praising us for breaking new ground in the boutique hotel domain. I think its success is largely down to the fact that we combined a keen understanding of the local culture and bamboo materials with a unique spa-like overall concept for what is actually a business hotel.
Ultimately, whether you call it a surprise, a breakthrough or a point of difference, our design firm is known for creating something unexpected. We’re famous for conceiving this kind of branding or commercial design strategy before we come up with any proposal. This leads to another of our strengths – research – which is critical to any successful project.

How has the ongoing coronavirus pandemic affected your business? 
The biggest issue is that we can’t cross the border into mainland China, where the bulk of our projects are located. Right now, we can only see the sites virtually through apps like Zoom, which some clients are understandably not thrilled about. Though our ongoing projects have adjusted to the new normal, it’s with new proposals that we encountered the most challenges. For Chinese clients, we are considered a foreign consultancy, so we really had to go the extra mile to persuade them that they should choose us rather than, say, a local contractor who can oversee everything in person. The onus has been on us to prove – be it through past success stories or a cohesive agenda that outlines the entire design and construction process – that we can still produce a superior product for them despite our location.

Do you have any exciting new projects in the pipeline? 
Absolutely. We are in the midst of designing new elements and experiences for luxury brands in department stores in China, which we will be rolling out soon. In the first of these, we’re exploring a crossover of the spheres of art, technology and fashion to set a new benchmark for how consumers experience high-end brands.
Your projects have earned more than 150 international accolades. Which one is particularly close to your heart? 
That would have to be my first award-winning project, the one that won me top honours in the Living Space category of the 2000 Asia-Pacific Interior Design Awards. This was roughly around the time I started Panorama. I was the only one of the five finalists who was an independent entry, and I got the shock of my life when my name was called as the winner. Interestingly enough, the project – Pan House – was actually my own home. It was a small three-storey village house sandwiched between two other similar structures. I think the reason why it garnered such critical acclaim is because I successfully transformed the traditional space into an entirely new domain. Each floor features a uniform grey cement motif, but I fitted different coloured filters to the windows to create separate atmospheres for each level.

How do you rate Hong Kong’s interior design industry on a global level? 
I think our biggest strength is that we are used to delivering projects within a short time span, with capabilities of revamping restaurants, residences and the like within a few short months. This is our unique edge, because other countries can’t match our fast-paced work ethic.
Having said that, there is one serious shortfall in that we don’t have a true ‘local identity’ per se because a lot of our cultural heritage and architecture has pretty much been erased. This is no good for local designers. You need to have roots and craftsmanship traditions that inform your designs, as they have in other countries like Japan and Sweden. There’s no such thing as a ‘Hong Kong style’, I think, and I feel conflicted about this and try to address it in my capacity as an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Finally, could you tell us something people don’t know about you. 
I was approached by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s team to lend Pan House as the set for the romantic drama film 2046, starring actres Faye Wong. Ultimately, I declined, as I didn’t want too many people in my personal space.
