<p>It is a typical rainy, grey May day in Hong Kong, but inside Andrew Yuen’s luxurious Central apartment, clashes of gold, silver and everything in between envelop the cosy space. Silverware and sculptures from his many travels around the globe are gracefully displayed with personal touches like portraits of his parents and son, Anthony.</p>

<p>Among the many roles he has inhabited over a long and fulfilling career – Deputy Managing Director of Dayton Group, CoChairman of the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, Vice-President of the Society of the Academy for Performing Arts and Chairman of Le French May, which led to the title of Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, awarded by the French government – is a new commitment as Director of the Board of the Hong Kong Palace Museum.</p>

<p>“The thing about this new role is that I didn’t apply for it. I was appointed,” he says humbly, shrugging his shoulders as if it is some small matter. “Why me? Well, maybe because of my art collection?”</p>

<p>Indeed, Yuen is a long-time supporter and champion of the arts, all types of it, from visual to performing. His fascination with all things artistic was ignited at a very young age when he and his father would go “treasure hunting” – as young Andrew would call it – in antique shops along Hollywood Road and at auction houses as one of their weekend activities. Despite having pioneered the electronics industry in the city, his parents raised him and his four siblings to be self-effacing. A sensibility that he applies when bringing up a teenager of his own.</p>

<p>“I am always proud to say that I have the best parents. They just let us do what we want to do in life and explore whatever we like. But I think they also have this magic to bring us all back together. All five of us are now living here in Hong Kong,” he says, laughing.</p>

<p>Kendy Enterprise, the empire which Jack and Daisy Yuen built, was founded in 1958 as one of the early makers of transistor radios. Dayton Industrial was born in 1972 and nurtured into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of micro-electronic products such as heart-rate monitors, altimeter watches, e-bike HMI, sensors and parts for smartphones.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Shades of Success</h3>



<p>“I feel very much at home when I am at the [Hong Kong Palace] museum. I could just talk about art all day,” says Yuen, grinning as he sips water from one of his collectable china cups. Later, on our way to the photo shoot location, he divulges that he and now Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh are good friends, and he was close to Princess Diana.</p>

<p>“These people are my contemporaries, not just in terms of age, but also as fans of the arts. However, my parents advised me that in order to look young and feel young, I must expose myself to younger connections. This way, I can keep up with change and not be stuck in my comfort zone.” he says.</p>

<p>He wears a traditional changsan, noting that he needs a birdcage and a fan to fully embrace the look. It is evident that while he is open to the current landscape, he still pays homage to his roots and appreciates his own culture. As a newly minted museum director, Yuen reflects on the evolution of the arts scene, particularly in Hong Kong.</p>

<p>“The hit musical Hamilton is a perfect example that art is inclusive and ever-evolving. Musicals now explore pop and rap styles of music. We really have to make art accessible everywhere, that’s the most important part. Hopefully, I can play a role in that. That’s why we are more ambitious than ever with the line-up for the French May Arts Festival.” he says.</p>

<p>He also shares that beneath the foundations of the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai is a time capsule put there by six people – one of whom just happens to be him.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hues of Happiness</h3>



<p>Yuen’s vision for the Hong Kong Palace Museum vibrates with colour, movement and textures – just like a work of art. He says: “There are only three Palace museums in the world – in Beijing, Taipei and now in Hong Kong. So I hope that the one in Hong Kong will be the bridge between the other two “Palace-tinians” – between China and Taiwan.”</p>

<p>As a seasoned art collector, he reiterates that it is important to do your own research before purchasing. When you don’t know the market, it’s easy to fall for things just because they are buzzed about, especially on social media. “I recommend learning about art and artists online so the choices become your own,” he explains.</p>

<p>The adage that new collectors should spend a year looking and not buying rings truer than ever. While that may seem extreme, taking time to develop your eye is essential. Like many other things in life, it should be quality over quantity, too. He encourages art lovers to invest in fewer pieces that are of higher quality. Art is, after all, a purchase for life, so it is better to collect slowly with focus rather than to rush and take a more decorative approach. “Art should be something that talks to you,” he adds.</p>

<p>He is clearly very proud of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, and on a smaller, though still substantial level, the art in his home. His collection delves deep into a style and an artist through gorgeous masterpieces. Works of art, more generally speaking, impact society, fostering economic, racial and social justice and educational advancement.</p>

<p>His own Covid chronicle was both impactful and life-changing. Yuen caught the initial strain of the virus during the frightening pre-vaccine era. As many others who pull through serious illness would attest, it made him appreciate life even more than ever.</p>

<p>“Other than material things, I think what matters most is that we collect memories – memories that are precious yet priceless,” he says. “I am thankful that I always have the chance to be surrounded by family and friends. Above all the things here that glimmer and shimmer, the memories that I have, and am still collecting, will always be my number-one prized possessions.”</p>

Held over three nights within the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon, her last large-scale concert serves as the star’s last hurrah in her decade-long career in the showbiz industry. </em>One of the oldest zoological and botanical centres in the world, and the city’s oldest park, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens provides the lush backdrop for an art project that exhorts visitors to explore their relationship with nature. ‘Hi! Flora, Fauna’ exhibits 17 different artists and groups using various media, including painting, photography, sculpting and installation. The experience is further enlivened with a collaborative audio experience by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.</p>

Curated by Catherine Kwai, featuring 14 oil paintings loaned from important private collectors, three of which span 6-meters wide and were specially created for Mathieu’s Grand Palais retrospective in Paris in 1978.</p>

Organised by the Tourism Commission, the Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival continues its three-year pilot scheme to instigate a new experience of art through the integration of culture, heritage and nature in everyday life. The festival takes on a virtual space to showcase its varied artworks in digital format, inviting viewers to immerse in a 360-degree virtual reality exhibition that encapsulates the unique natural landscape and history of the Sai Kung village.</em></p>

<p><strong>Between the Lines: The Legends of Hong Kong Printing</strong><br />

</em>This fascinating exhibition presents stories and illustrations of traditional printing techniques and movable type tools, as well as works and designs by emerging young designers who have assumed the mantle of reviving and modernising the craft of letter printing. Curators at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum train a special spotlight this month on the disappearing art form of lithography.</p>

<p><strong>Chinese Surrealism<br />

</em>In association with the month-long Le French May arts festival, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong &amp; Macau partners with Alisan Fine Arts to present Chinese Surrealism. The exhibition of contemporary Chinese ink paintings and sculptures focuses on dreamscapes and explorations of the unconscious mind – imagery more commonly associated with Western names such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Young Hong Kong female artists dominate a six-strong group selected for their impressive interpretation of surrealism through a Chinese lens.</p>

In this local iteration of the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, the duo is caught in a war between rival triad families in the ’60s Hong Kong. The narrative follows their passion and tragedy in a fusion of dance and drama with original choreography by Septime Webre, Prokofiev’s dramatic score, and sumptuous cheongsam costumes.</p>

Michelin-starred cultural and social destination Duddell’s lends its contemporary mixed-use space to an exhibition of 16 thought-provoking works owned by four eminent female collectors, including Mimi Brown, Karen Levy and Li Lin. Curve of Buoyancy spans such diverse subjects as Gothic architecture and functional straps in athleisurewear, and is inspired by the curved lightness of Wendell Dayton’s sculpture ‘For Calder’ (1975).</p>

Asia’s most important jewellery event returns this year, albeit in a hybrid of physical and virtual programmes. Occupying 70,000sq.m of event space within the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the gathering of all that glitters lives up to its year-on-year exciting line-up of exhibitors and special events. The fair’s virtual showing, meanwhile, extends from 17 June to 7 July and grants full access to new products, digital events, specials and more.</p>

<p><strong>Balanchine&#8217;s Jewels<br />

</em>Arguably one of the most influential ballet choreographers of the 20th century, George Balanchine first made his mark in 1967 in the debut of his gemstone-inspired Jewels. Renowned for its style and glamour, the three-act ballet was initially inspired by Balanchine’s chance visit to the iconic jewellery house of Van Cleef &amp; Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Now, it returns in a modern revival courtesy of the Hong Kong Ballet.</p>

<p><strong>The Art of Gold: 3000 Years of Chinese treasures<br />

</em>Shining a light on 3,000 years of Chinese treasure and craftsmanship, the French school of jewellery arts, L’Ecole, is presenting its third exhibition at the K11 MUSEA. This time around, it is highlighting a selection of masterpieces from the Mengdiexuan collection, as well as classic examples of the ancient art of Chinese gold-smithing. From now until the end of August, jewellery enthusiasts can enjoy a truly epic hour-long guided tour through centuries of the master craftsmanship once practiced in ancient China.</p>

</em>With many of the current pandemic-related restriction in place across Hong Kong set to ease, the ever-popular Cheung Chau Bun Festival, a long standing annual celebration of the Taoist pantheon, is expected to go ahead as planned. By far the city’s most popular Da Jiu celebration, the event always sees thousands heading to Cheung Chau, one of Hong Kong’s outlying islands. This year, any visitors able make the trip on 19 May will get to experience its unique vertical bun-snatching race, as well as a variety of elaborate floating parades and traditional performances.</p>

<p>It’s official. Hong Kong is now home to Asia’s largest population of French expats, having overtaken Shanghai, that long-time Gallic stronghold. It’s quite an achievement given that Hong Kong was once a British colony. As recently as 2016, UK-ers were still the city’s largest Western cohort. But now, that particular claim to fame has been wrested from them by the French.</p>

<p>In fact, the surge in <em>républicain</em> residents is nothing short of spectacular. Shedding a little light on this influx, French Consul General Eric Berti says: “Over the last decade, we have seen the number of French expats double in size. The average year-on-year growth is around five percent and we even had one year where our numbers jumped by more than 10 percent.”</p>
<p>While there’s no denying that this represents a marked increase, France and Hong Kong have enjoyed a discreet dalliance since before the First Opium War. But why are so many French citizens making the 9,800-km trip east to HK today? Well, work, as you might expect, is quite an influential factor.</p>

<p>According to the French Chamber of Commerce, there are more than 800 French companies active in Hong Kong. Some 60 percent are retail-related, most likely using the city as a springboard into the Mainland market. A further 25 percent are involved in finance and insurance – again, not a surprise, given the country’s penchant for all things mathematical.</p>
<p>Perhaps the largest – and most welcome – by-product of this mass migration has been the stratospheric rise of French gastronomy in Hong Kong. In addition to three-Michelin-starred L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon and three two-starred Gallic eateries – Amber, Caprice and Pierre, there’s also a raft of up-and-coming restaurants stepping into the spotlight.</p>

<p>France’s charm offensive is not just on the food front. Hong Kong’s social calendar is now replete French cultural events, including <a href="https://frenchmay.com/en/home/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Le French May</strong></span></a>, the annual month-long showcase of French films, art and food.</p>
<p>The efficacy of this charm offensive is clear, but what exactly is the appeal of this faraway quasi-city-state for so many French expats?</p>
<p>For Consul General Berti, it’s just the latest chapter in a 170-plus-year love story. Expanding on his theme, he says: “Hong Kong has fascinated our people – especially our young – for many years. Currently, more than 60 percent of the French nationals living here are working professionals aged 35 or less.&nbsp;They are drawn by the city’s vibrancy, friendliness and high quality of life. It’s a city where they feel they can truly succeed.”</p>

<p>Berti’s sentiments certainly seemed to resonate with Ben, a French banker who first came to Hong Kong in 2011. He explains: “As I’d always been attracted to Asian culture, when France was hit by the global monetary crisis, moving to a thriving financial hub like Hong Kong seemed a no-brainer.”</p>
<p>Given that the wider world is finally recovering from the global financial tsunami of 2008, which brought Ben and countless others to Hong Kong’s shores, does this mean that the years of mass French immigration are now coming to the end?</p>

<p>Taking a philosophical view of such a notion, Berti says: “There’s a lot of excitement in France now with the rise of Macron [the newly-elected president]. There’s a big push to be a part of the reform that seems to be on the horizon. So perhaps it will attract some to return home…”</p>
<p>Ben, however, sees it as a more distant prospect, saying: “Even if the new reforms have a positive impact, it’s hard to predict the long-term result. I’d rather wait and see before considering a move back.”</p>

<p>Adrian, one of the more recent French expats to arrive in Hong Kong, is of a similar mindset, saying: “Even with the new president, France is not as competitive, in business terms, as many other countries. While I enjoyed living in France, I prefer to be in a more dynamic working environment.”</p>
<p>Given the clear alignment between France and Hong Kong, could there one day be a more formal arrangement? With the UK exiting the EU, is there a Hong-Kong-shaped gap there waiting to be filled? Well, probably not. There does, however, seem every certainty that the unlikely pairing of this far-away Asian city and its European soulmate is only set to continue. As to the future, well – as they say in downtown Sai Ying Pun – <em>qui sait</em>?</p>

<p>A much anticipated event of this year’s Le French May, the Claude Monet: Spirit of Place exhibition, played to a full house at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum on its opening on 4 May. A select few were invited to an exclusive charity gala dinner to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the artist’s death – all proceeds going to Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children. The exhibition features many of the impressionist artist’s most celebrated works and is open until 11 July.</p>
