<p>A beautiful home has all the more character if it is situated in a picturesque neighbourhood. This elaborately stylish 800-square-foot apartment in Oliwa, a historic suburb of Gdańsk in Poland, certainly embodies the spirit of its surrounding landscape. Remodelled in striking combinations of dark teal green, grey stone and warm wood by design firm Raca Architekci, it involved a year of planning and renovation. Michal Raca, the main designer and founder of the firm, worked closely with his client to materialize her vision of a nature-inspired home. </p>

<p>A sense of grandeur is immediate as you enter the flat. The absence of an entrance hall increases the interior space and imparts volume, imbuing comfort from the moment you step through the door. A tall elliptical mirror framed in gold brass is strategically placed so you can check your appearance before leaving or entering, while a black veneer bench with an upholstered seat is a convenient spot for slipping shoes on or off. To provide maximum storage in such a small space, the designer has incorporated cupboards that blend with the walls, this minimalist approach gives a clean feel. </p>

<p>A polished terrazzo floor serves as a prelude to the wooden flooring within. A brass wall lamp is placed as a stylish ornament, its adjustable lighting setting the mood of the space. The rich teal hues of the feature walls act as a sophisticated backdrop for contemporary furniture. The designer has deliberately used mirrors of different shapes and sizes to make the apartment look more spacious. Large black and gold pots with large plants can be found in different corners of the house, flaunting the green thumb of the owner and her love for nature. </p>

<p>The open kitchen is the heart of the apartment, linking the living and dining areas. Not the keenest of cooks, the homeowner initially envisaged a small, compact kitchen, but one of the layouts proposed by studio founder Michal Raca offered a larger layout with a kitchen island. Selecting this option has proved a joy; it has become her favorite space, allowing her to host friends and discover delightful new recipes. </p>

<p>The island has a bold countertop of bardiglio marble from Spain, which is paired with other expanses of grey to emphasize the beauty of the stone. Its complementary brass accessories look like jewels adjoining the teal green dining area.  A round gold-rimmed mirror serves as a backdrop to the dining table balancing the dark tones of teal allowing more natural light to be reflected from the walls. Two beautiful round pendant lights hang above the kitchen island while a similar horizontal pendant light illuminates the dining space. </p>

<p>The upholstery is set to be the same shade as the walls, whether for curtains, the bed’s velvet headboard or the fabric of armchairs. A wall of windows spanning the living and dining areas offers panoramic views of the Baltic port city’s old town, where rows of red roofs reach out to the horizon. The apertures allow abundant light to fill the whole space and are embellished with heavy velour dark green curtains in a décor reminiscent of an opera house. The velour finish of the walls reduces dazzling reflections as the sunlight streams in.</p>

<p>A cosy space for unwinding, the master bedroom is dressed in two contrasting materials, plush velour panels above the veneer. Behind the bed, an upholstered headrest built into the lower part of the wall adds optimum comfort. The different textured panels are separated by a strip of bardiglio marble underlined in black, echoing the theme of the living quarters. The eye-catching originality of this design is enhanced by beautiful golden lamps that provide subtle contrast. </p>

<p>Following Raca’s extensive renovations, the bedroom and en-suite bathroom have become one coherent space, framed by large sloping windows at one end. The master suite’s aesthetic value has been further elevated by the addition of a glass wall partition for easy access between the two areas. It is a functional solution that not only allows natural light to flow into the bathroom – unusual in apartment blocks these days – but also gives the appearance of a more spacious bedroom. For the sake of privacy, a curtain can be drawn across the divide and bestows the ambience of a luxury spa. </p>

A specially designed console table holds all the equipment required for music appreciation, from stereo to speakers and a turntable. There are city views for inspiration, with the historic charms of Gdańsk sure to instil harmony into new compositions. </p>

Teal Appeal: Rich notes of blue-green and grey refresh a stylish home in Poland where music fills one room


<p>Tucked away in the rolling Russian countryside lies a spectacular home that embodies classic refinement and contemporary finesse. Extending slightly over 2,000 square feet, this beautiful abode is situated in the picturesque village of Zhukovka, just outside Moscow. It is a testament to the nation’s rich cultural heritage and its owners’ fondness for grandeur.</p>

<p>The architects at Moscow design studio Archpoint achieved this feat through a thoughtfully conceived layout by incorporating calming colours; expensive natural materials like marble, stone and wood; sophisticated furniture from renowned brands including IPE Cavalli and Fendi; and elegant chandeliers.</p>

<p>Its imposing façade is adorned with intricate carvings and ornate details that seem to dance across the exterior walls. Inside, a spacious foyer extends into a sweeping staircase of black and white Dalmatian marble leading to the upper floor. The two storeys are separated by distinct themes. On the ground floor, the designers use dark, soothing hues to contrast with a dramatic white and grey backdrop for the fireplace, where Lithos Design light stone panels form a striking three-dimensional effect. The upper floor is dominated by two palatial bedrooms distinguished by vivid colour tones.</p>

Sumptuous furnishings, rich textiles and exquisite artwork adorning the walls all create a warm and inviting atmosphere. One of the home’s outstanding features is its seamless integration with the outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors lead to expansive decks, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.</p>

<p>The heart of the home is the extensive open-plan living room, with its soaring, well-illuminated ceiling and windows that frame the garden and let in plenty of natural light. Easy access to the patio enables an immediate, harmonious transition from indoors to out. The garden landscaping juxtaposes trimmed shrubs and tall trees.</p>

<p>In the centre of the room, a large plush velvet sofa sits under a shower of crystal glass dangling from the chandelier. It faces the majestic stone fireplace which has been carved into the marble feature wall. This is the perfect spot for cosying up on a round chaise longue in front of the fire during chilly winter evenings. In an unconventional but elegant style, the television is suspended on a separate stand rather than positioned on the feature wall, making it easier to move the angle of the screen when hosting large gatherings.</p>

<p>Extending from the lounge, the open kitchen is equipped with ample counter space, perfect for whipping up traditional Russian dishes. A large centre island, also crafted in marble, acts as a dining table and is set with four chairs. The colours here are brighter, with mustard-yellow cabinets and grey walls. A round crystal chandelier hovers above the dining area, echoing its sister in the living room.</p>

<p>The upstairs bedrooms are lavish, serene retreats with gorgeous bedding and soft lighting. Here, too, chandeliers contribute to the warm luxury of the décor. The master suite has an oceanic theme, contrasting the turquoise and deep blue of the upholstery, panelling and drapes with the golden ‘liquid-metal’ coating that etches the walls and furniture. The chamber’s polygonal shape makes it a multipurpose space with a TV wall, sofa and armchair. The en-suite bathroom has a deluxe soaking tub and separate shower, perfect for unwinding after a long day. The other bedroom exudes an earthier theme, combining beige enamel and a rich palette of American walnut. It is an unusually long room, separated by a TV wall facing the bed, with a walk-in closet and desk beyond. Both bedrooms are adjoined by bathrooms decorated in accordance with the colour scheme – light and dark. Mirrors from IPE Cavalli have graceful frames, and the designers have provided several options for lighting – from pendant globes to spotlighting under the sink and bathtub.</p>

<p>The furniture in both rooms was chosen to match the interior colours, with walls and headboards highlighted as accents. In the turquoise room, the feature wall behind the bed is framed by natural Lithos marble with an eye-catching illuminated pattern; in the brown bedroom, the wall plastering is accentuated by an undulating relief carving. Special attention has been paid to the wardrobes, which are also dressed in the colours introduced in the bedrooms. There are functional cabinets made by local craftspeople, as well as chests of drawers and an IPE Cavalli dressing table.</p>

Grounded in Grandeur: Traditional motifs and modern comforts cohabit in a Russian home of rich colour and countless chandeliers


<p>Heralding change and a joyful celebration of life, the spring season has inspired countless poets and artists through the centuries. Taking inspiration from its ephemeral beauty, award-winning Taipei-based interior design firm L’atelier Fantasia imagines a 3,000-square-foot duplex residence as ‘The first drizzle of spring’. Idan Chiang, the studio’s founder, emphasises the relationship between people and their surroundings in this enchanting sanctuary created for a couple and their two children. </p>

<p>The residential layout is a thoughtful choreography of privacy and interaction, with rooms positioned at the four corners of the home for the best views of the outdoors. This arrangement fosters familial intimacy while respecting individual solitude in a space where luxury, elegance and playfulness intersect. The design choices are not merely aesthetic; they are instrumental in creating a living environment that is as responsive to the family’s dynamics as it is to the changing seasons.</p>

<p>Upon entering, you are greeted by a spacious living room with a neutral colour palette of soft grey walls, cream-coloured trim and plush velour floors. The space is illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows, framed by whisper-thin silk curtains and affording breathtaking views of the Taipei skyline. Exuding opulence and refinement, the room envelopes occupants in a sense of warmth and comfort, surrounded by plush furnishings and rich textures.</p>

<p>The lounge ceiling is accentuated at various points and the lighting is kept minimal, giving an elegant finish to the space. A large sectional sofa and two designer armchairs face the TV wall, complemented by circular coffee tables. The walls are adorned with a selection of artworks, including a stunning piece of traditional Taiwanese calligraphy, a modern abstract painting and compelling prints by local photographers. A grand piano sits at one end of the room, reflecting the owners’ taste in music as well as art. </p>

<p>Adjacent to the living room, the kitchen is a symphony of clean lines, minimal ornamentation and top-of-the-line appliances. Crisp white cabinets, gleaming stainless-steel surfaces, and a spacious island with a built-in sink create a functional and stylish space perfect for culinary creativity. Two skylights brighten the room and green velvet dining chairs at the counter stand out amid a wash of white, bringing warmth to this space for enjoying casual family meals. </p>

<p>A huge lazy Susan table occupies this end of the lounge, forming a dining area for hosting guests and larger gatherings. Intricate blue-crystal pendants from the chandelier above match the blue dining chairs. Every detail, from the carefully chosen materials to the meticulously curated art, contributes to a harmonious balance of style, comfort and functionality. This area’s focal point is a breathtaking floor-to-ceiling window, offering a panoramic vista of the city skyline and flooding the space with natural light.</p>

<p>Upstairs is a second, cosy living room for family reunions and children’s play dates. The space is a canvas of vibrant early spring colours, woven with warmth and finesse. A tea-rose-pink faux-fur sofa on a large, round grey area rug makes the room all the more alluring. </p>

VCDC builds homes in Metro Manila designed to ‘Live Differently’


<p>A home that reflects the taste of its owners and serves as a functional environment for both living and working is a dream for many. It is realised within this apartment of soothing colours, natural surfaces and understated elegance at MeyerHouse, a prestigious new condominium complex in Singapore. The interiors are designed by Takenouchi Webb, a firm known for its deftness in manipulating materials to create textural spaces.</p>

<p>Many exquisitely designed elements become focal points, while utilitarian functions are elevated to celebrate domesticity and an uplifting working environment. Meeting individual and collective needs, the apartment belongs to a couple who work primarily from home and are passionate about their respective hobbies. The husband enjoys freediving, board games and making pizza; the wife music and cooking. The latter, in particular, was a determining factor for the functional aspects of the design, says British architect Marc Webb, who runs the Singapore-based design studio with his partner, interiors expert Naoko Takenouchi. </p>

<p>An expansive open-plan living and dining space is subtly segmented by carefully curated and customised furniture and furnishings. A super-comfy oversized sofa placed upon a large rug defines the sitting area, where a slab of Blue Roma marble serves as a bespoke coffee table with drawers to store board games. Nearby, two armchairs from House of Finn Juhl adjacent to a marble side table by Tacchini is the designated spot for playing Go. </p>

<p>Original finishes such as dark-laminated walls in the apartment’s private lift lobby and patterned parquet flooring are matched with lime-plaster surfaces, showcasing the handmade quality of the selected materials. This craft-led approach continues in a wall of timber beading and woven-straw wallpaper on the other side of the living room, which conceals doors to the master bedroom and wet kitchen. &nbsp;</p>

<p>An open kitchen next to the dining area is a true showstopper, boasting sleek lines and high gloss finishes; extending the kitchen into the living space was a key part of the couple’s brief to the designers. Their wish has materialised in a beautiful green onyx breakfast bar that also holds a sink and specialist baking oven to become a working kitchen counter. </p>

<p>The counter edge creates a sculptural element in the living room and features shelves for books and two wooden bar stools for extra seating. A custom-designed dining table, crafted from rich walnut wood, accommodates up to eight people. Above, a striking industrial-style pendant light adds a touch of glamour. Planters of tall greenery are placed around the table and the room to incorporate nature in the indoor space. </p>

<p>The apartment’s large balcony has been integrated into the living space, extending its impressive dimensions and housing an additional dining table for informal meals. Another bespoke element here that brings delight to daily tasks is a work station for the avid pizza chef, complete with a pizza oven, built-in refrigerator and storage drawers for the dough to rest. Vertical grooves on the light-toned wood cabinet provide a pleasing visual counterpoint to the horizontal slats of the Venetian blinds dressing the floor-to-ceiling windows.</p>

<p>A leitmotif of curves softens hard edges and gives purposeful embellishment to functional elements, such as an arch framing a sliding door that leads to a storeroom containing diving gear. Scalloped walls and a customised metal shelf in the main bedroom continue this language. Furniture and lighting fixtures from brands such as Time &amp; Style, Apparatus Studio, BassamFellows and Singapore vintage store Noden complete the home’s relaxed, eloquent character.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The master bedroom is a serene retreat, complete with a plush area rug, a comfortable reading nook and a spa-worthy en-suite bathroom. Floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides allow abundant light to filter through white curtains. Two delicate hanging lamps and flower vases resting on low side tables flank the bed, adding to the natural warmth of the room. The bathroom is equally elegant, with a wooden vanity and splendid wooden bathtub following the natural theme of the interiors.</p>

Natural Selection: Green onyx, blue marble and plenty of wood bring quiet beauty to a soothing Singapore home


<p>When it comes to living in Hong Kong, space is always at a premium. With soaring property prices, more and more people are looking for smaller, more efficient living spaces that can cater to their family’s growing needs. Home to a couple and their newborn baby, this King’s Park Villa apartment in Ho Man Tin fits the bill by utilising its maximum capacity. It has been carefully designed as an ideal environment for a small family and their ever-changing lifestyle.</p>

<p>The interior experts at Taste Design were entrusted with realising the owners’ dream home and so began a six-month labour of love. Comfort and utility of space were the main focus when reconfiguring the layout. The mood has been kept natural and elegant, encompassing all the necessities while avoiding any kind of visual clutter. Thus, the apartment, which spans 1,258 square feet over one floor, can adapt promptly to the changing dynamics of a new family.</p>

<p>Upon entering the flat, a warm-themed, spacious living room bedecked in neutral tones welcomes you through a retractable glass partition between the foyer and the lounge. A long, slim cabinet of dark wood is placed beside the main door, matching its colour and allowing handy placement of keys and other essentials for expeditions outside.</p>

<p>Two large floor-to-ceiling windows brighten the living-cum-dining area. One of these is curved, which presented a major design challenge, but was successfully overcome by a seamless blending of the rounded area into the uniform straight lines of today’s residential architecture. The window curvature serves as an attractive backdrop for two bright blue contemporary armchairs placed at right angles to the far end of a comfy grey sofa. Light-hued floor-to-ceiling curtains match the room’s overall colour palette and cover the window frames to give a sense of extra volume to the walls.</p>

<p>The sitting area is maximised with a tidy arrangement of loose furniture including the square armchairs, sofa, two round textured poufs and a central coffee table of inter-layered circles. Soft lighting and carefully curated décor create an ambience of calm and tranquility.</p>

<p>A gleaming round dining table topped by a lazy Susan and surrounded by curved upholstered dining chairs is placed in front of the other wide window, allowing plenty of light while eating. The use of metal and marble throughout the space not only adds to the aesthetics but also hints at the practicality and longevity of the owners’ choices. A wooden feature wall behind the dining area breaks the visual monotony; shelves on each side flank a concealed storage cupboard and display artistic and whimsical collectibles, many with an animal theme.</p>

<p>A collage of striking photographs adds contrast and interest on the adjacent wall, while an eye-catching chandelier constructed from gold and silver shards hangs overhead, adding to the warm glow of this cosy spot for family meals. Beside the main living space is an enclosed kitchen, where wooden cabinets and marble tiles on the walls and floor echo the general preference for natural materials. There is ample space for cooking, laundry and storage, while a bedroom and bathroom off the kitchen provide privacy for the family’s helper.</p>

<p>A wide marble hallway leads past another glass partition to the rest of the home. On one side is a study lined with shelves of books and framed photographs. A pair of desks affords ample space for the couple to sit and work quietly side by side. Since it faces the guest bathroom across the hall, the study can be turned into a convenient guest room when needed.</p>

<p>Next comes the nursery with lively pastel wallpaper and a cot surrounded by baby toys for a joyful vibe. Once again, discreet inbuilt storage has been designed to enhance the utility of the room and keep it clutter-free.</p>

<p>The door to the master suite is right next to the nursery for quick access when the baby wakes up at night. Here, a simple décor enhances the space, with storage neatly offered within a low white cabinet underneath the TV wall facing the bed. A feature wall of contrasting dark wood is unconventionally an extension of the dressing table rather than behind the headboard of the bed. The entrance to the walk-in closet also blends into the dark panelling, while the closet itself is an extension of the bathroom wall.</p>

<p>The ensuite bathroom is rather irregular in shape, but the designer has masterfully utilised this unique triangular layout by making the smaller end into a walk-in shower. It is a compact, bright space with a pale wood floor and off- white textured walls that almost have an outdoor bathing feel, reminiscent of villa accommodation in Bali.</p>

The chairs are cleverly positioned to encourage both intimate conversations and effortless flow throughout the room. Given the elevated height of this apartment block, wide bay windows offer spectacular night views of the city and a source of abundant natural light during the day.</p>

The long dark grey dining table is embellished above with two giant glass chandeliers whose geometric design reflects the interior’s primary theme. At the other end of the living space, a wooden wall acts as a partition to frame a bar and cosy den.</p>

<p>The bright yellow bar counter is the focal point within this darkened area, and it is offset by an array of niches in the walls which display wine bottles. A plum-coloured sofa sits opposite two large ottomans with a glass table in between, making it a perfect place to unwind at night with a drink or two. The kitchen is kept simple with all-white cabinets and gleaming marble walls.</p>

<p>While a long happy life is the blessing everyone craves, all too often an unhealthy lifestyle ensures this is one dream never likely to come true. One lifestyle-related illness that has reached almost epidemic proportions over recent years is diabetes, an ailment that has spiked on a global basis over the last 20 years. Indeed, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than two million deaths were directly attributable to diabetes in 2019 alone.</p>

<p>A chronic condition, diabetes is caused by the failure of the pancreas to produce a sufficient level of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. These subsequently raised sugar levels damage nerves and blood vessels, leading to possible kidney or heart failure and the general deterioration of many bodily functions.</p>
<p>Type 2 is the most common form, a non-inherited variant that accounts for 95% of all diabetes cases. Often triggered by obesity or an inactive lifestyle, there are a number of steps you can take to avoid succumbing to the condition or minimising its impact if you already&nbsp;have it. As the lack of a strenuous exercise regime and poor diet choices are the two biggest risk factors, minimising your susceptibility is a relatively straightforward process.</p>

<p><strong>Take an exercise break</strong><br />
It should go without saying that the benefits accruing from regular exercise are so widespread and so profound that it is all but impossible to list them all. Getting less than seven or eight hours of sleep a night can slow down your bodily functions and affect your ability to make routine decisions, while also causing stress and making you feel lethargic or anxious. Lack of sleep can also play havoc with your blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity, putting you at risk of developing diabetes at a relatively early age.</p>
<p>When the body doesn’t get enough rest, it often tries to compensate by stimulating the appetite, with an unhealthy gain in weight the likely consequence. Sleep deprivation also tends to disrupt hormone activity, which can, in turn, lead to raised cortisol levels, a condition that adversely affects the body’s natural capacity to manage blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>In order to avoid this, it is advisable to adopt an effective sleeping routine, one that optimises both the quality and quantity of your nocturnal downtime. A simple approach to this is to relax your mind and dispense with all distractions before settling down to sleep while making your bedroom an oasis of quiet and calm.</p>

<p><strong>Carbohydrates and fibre</strong><br />
Consciously planning your meals and ensuring the required intake of essential nutrients on a daily basis can help reduce your susceptibility to a variety of diseases. In the case of diabetes,&nbsp;maintaining an appropriate level of carbohydrate consumption is important as it plays a key role in maintaining blood sugar levels as it is broken down into glucose, which is then stored as an energy resource. A diet disproportionately carb-heavy, however, may disrupt insulin production, resulting in unhealthy high blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>In order to counter this, prioritise foods with a low glycaemic index (a measure of how quickly carbs are broken down and absorbed by your body) such as oats, beans or barley. It is also advisable to increase your fibre intake as this helps maintain glucose levels by restricting the amount of sugar absorbed into the bloodstream, with soluble fibres the most effective when it comes to countering the effects of a high-carb diet. Also ensure that fruit, vegetables and whole grains form part of your daily diet as they are rich in fibre and help regulate digestion.</p>

<p>Chromium plays an essential role in the treatment and prevention of diabetes as it promotes the metabolisation of carbohydrates and fats, while magnesium boosts protein synthesis and sustains much of the body’s muscular and nerve functionality. A deficiency in both nutrients has also been linked to insulin resistance, one of the core syndromes underlying the onset of diabetes.</p>
<p>When it comes to regulating diabetes and even preventing its onset, Vitamins C, D, E, B6 and B12 all have vital roles to play. While Vitamin C suppresses sorbitol (a harmful sugar that can trigger such diabetic complications as retinopathy, neuropathy and kidney damage), D and E promote insulin sensitivity and blood oxygenation. For their part, B6 and B12 help treat diabetic neuropathy,&nbsp;the damage done to the nervous system by overly-concentrated sugar levels.</p>
