We spend about a third of our lives in the bedroom – arguably, the most interesting third – so a chamber that balances calm, comfort and convenience with pleasing aesthetics, appealing textures and a breathtaking view would tick most boxes as an ideal space for resting the head. The value of this selection of bespoke bedrooms cannot simply be measured by the cost per zzz. For those with the means, these luxurious refuges represent the ultimate in afternoon napping and nocturnal bliss.

Turkish opulence, Mediterranean indulgence, rugged New Zealand outcrops and the sublime surrounds of the Swiss Alps are just a few of the bedtime backdrops featured here. Whether it’s a mountainside meet with Morpheus, sea-level slumbering or even a little serene, marine downtime, one of these snooze headliners is surely your dream destination.

Turkey Turnkey

The master bedroom of Buama House in Beykoz, a dramatically remodelled private home in an affluent suburb of Istanbul, is a cavern-shaped delight. A dome-vaulted ceiling of undulating lines and an illuminated arc that spans the length of the wall housing a pair of tall windows are highlights. Another entire wall is covered by a mirrored door, leading into a mosaic-tiled bathroom. Furniture is modern and minimalist, with the bed itself sleek, low and blanketed with the finest linens.

Emphasising the beauty of organic design and flowing lines that seemingly create infinite space, the house was renovated in 2010 by the Istanbul studio of New York-headquartered firm Global Architectural Development (GAD) at the bequest of a young couple. Interiors are redolent of the lost ethereal world of the Ottoman Empire, while also embracing a dash of contemporary Turkish style.

The home presents its own enchanting narrative. High ceilings provide airy living space and every room weaves a different yet harmonious tale through its unique contours and textures. It’s no wonder that this residence is seen as one of the finest embodiments of the design philosophy of Turkish architect Gokhan Avcioglu, GAD’s founder and principal.

Eco Dream

For a taste of the truly sublime au naturel, where better to bed down for the night than in the Península de Osa rainforest of southwest Costa Rica, an area renowned for its rich biodiversity? Casa Iseami is a spectacular architectural residence built by Juan Robles, the architect behind sustainable studio Robles Arquitectos. Here, using solar panels and hydroelectric power, Robles has created a 5,188-square-foot house that serves as a prime example of luxurious, ecologically sound design. The ground floor serves as a showcase for students of sustainable architecture; the first floor is a stunning self-contained, off-the-grid residence.

One of the most striking features of the upstairs master bedroom is a corner window of wrap-around glass, which affords sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the palm-tree-dotted coastline and the pool below. Tastefully exposed wooden beams blend effortlessly with the natural surroundings, while a handful of casually scattered throw cushions underscore a contemporary yet cosy vibe.

Sea Change

The bedroom of luxury motor yacht La Belle is something to behold. Illustrious Monaco-based interior designer Lidia Bersani dreamed up breathtakingly decadent sleeping quarters – or master cabin, in more maritime terms – for the 80-metre superyacht’s female owner. It is dressed in her signature opulent textures and colour palette of white, ivory, cream and light beige, contrasted with gold and champagne finishes.

A particularly lavish affair, the spacious grand cabin has a private terrace and is complete with a circular king-size bed and a baldachin – a canopy that traditionally sits over the throne of royalty. Gold flourishes and Baroque-style floral carpeting enhance its luxurious feel. Generously proportioned windows afford panoramic ocean views when powering through the waves.

Arabic Nights

For those seeking to sleep surrounded by soulful Mediterranean style with an ornate Moroccan touch, there is no finer example than one nestled within Tres Lunas ranch on the sun-drenched southern Spanish island of Ibiza. The stunning residence is the creation of Rolf Blakstad Architects & Design Consultants, one of Ibiza’s most admired firms. As clearly exemplified by the bedroom, the Blakstad team adopted a strong Islamic interior-design theme.

The bed chamber comes in the traditional bright Ibicenco style – think rough stone and terracotta – with the bed mounted simply on the floor. Perched in the centre of the room on a raised platform – no higher than a low coffee table – it is emblazoned with a stunning blue-and-white zigzag pattern, which chimes resonantly with the choice of tiled flooring. Metal cradles for candles are set into the walls and metal Arabic-style lanterns hang overhead, providing an intriguing interplay of flame and shadow – the perfect setting for a night of romance.

Lord of the Beds

A robustly romantic residence situated among the spectacular Castle Hill rocks on New Zealand’s South Island boasts a master suite that couldn’t be warmer or more welcoming. The property’s blend of the rustic with the luxurious reaches a natural zenith in the master bedroom – a grand space of rugged simplicity, ably defined by the rough-hewn lumber beams above.

As with the guest bedrooms on the first floor, it boasts a bird’s-eye view of the nearby lake. The ensuite bathroom is fittingly spacious, distinguished by the contrast of its black stone walls and glass shower partitions.

Glass Act

Built on a 6,500-square-foot plot idyllically situated in the Swiss village of Brusino Arsizio, overlooking Lake Lugano on one side and the Alps on the other, is a glass-walled residence originally commissioned by a financial analyst. Jacopo Mascheroni, founder of Milan-based JM Architecture, chose to let the visible wonders of nature shine in his design. The polygonal house, dominated by generous expanses of glass, allows all within to admire the stunning outdoor landscape.

Fortunately, the bedrooms – all set on the ground floor and each with its own private garden – manage to maintain an apt degree of discretion for their occupants. In a triumph of understatement, each is tastefully decorated in light-toned wood and calming neutrals. Resting here offers the residents and their guests the perfect opportunity to take in the views in glorious seclusion.

Quixotic Charm

Laying down one’s head in the Don Quixote suite of a 16th-century palace in Córdoba, located in the breathtakingly beautiful Andalusian region of Spain, is to sleep steeped in history. Resting on Roman remains amid Mudejar architecture, fruit gardens and quiet courtyards, Palacio del Bailio is now a luxury boutique hotel.

The centrepiece of the one-time royal residence, the suite is dominated by a striking array of 18th-century paintings that feature the exploits of the Spanish windmill-tilting adventurer, as imagined by novelist Miguel de Cervantes. This unforgettable oval-shaped bed chamber is also adorned with elaborately carved white walls and cornices, providing a striking contrast to the deep red ochre of the accompanying artworks.
