Tucked away in the picturesque countryside of Washington state lies a tranquil lakehouse retreat, offering escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled among towering trees and lush greenery on the shores of a pristine lake, this stunning vacation retreat is the perfect haven for the owners, a couple and their three children, when they seek relaxation, adventure and a deep connection with nature.
Conceived by Seattle- and New York-based Allison Lind Interiors, the lakehouse is a masterclass in rustic-chic design, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Sprawling over one level, it boasts breathtaking views of the verdant landscape. The exterior is clad in weathered wood, with large windows and sliding glass doors that allow the beauty of the outdoors to flood in.
The entrance hall is a sensory experience transitioning from outside to in. Clad in textured, grooved wood, it is flanked by a large antique mirror facing a beautiful work of art. A roughly carved stone console table makes for an intriguing piece of décor and an ideal resting place for two tall vases. The printed rug in front of the door matches the pattern on the walls, while a chandelier brightens this welcoming space.
Inside, the open-plan living area is warm and inviting, with plush furnishings and a striking interplay of dark and light colour tones. A large white sectional sofa is set beside a dark TV wall under an even darker ceiling, creating interesting contrasts in reflecting and absorbing light. Balancing the dark and bright shades, an immaculate white carpet complements the sofa, while a round golden coffee table adds to the regal mood of the living space.
Seating on the other side of the room is centred around a rectangular glass-clad coffee table, but the focal point is a magnificent modern fireplace, where the family can gather in the winter for warmth and comfort. Two adjacent plush sofas rest on a richly patterned red Turkish carpet. Large glass windows, which open onto a patio, allow in abundant light and offer views of the green outdoors.
The living room’s feature wall is dressed in glass tiles that display interesting reflections of both the interior and the exterior. Since shelves here display the owners’ collection of artwork and family portraits, it becomes a small personal museum. The kitchen is equipped with a large black marble island with opulent black-and-gold bar chairs. Oak wood and black cabinets maintain the dark colour scheme.
The adjacent dining area offers the best views of the surrounding landscape. Tranquil meals can be enjoyed within sight of reflective greenery dancing off the emerald-green still waters of the lake. This inviting space is enhanced by a long dark solid-wood dining table surrounded by elegant rattan dining chairs. Two large white crystal chandeliers dangle down from above, shedding light on winter evenings. Even the laundry room situated off the dining area embodies the contrasting dark and light theme of the home. Light wooden cabinets on dark patterned walls provide ample storage.
Minimal yet rich décor in the master bedroom is purposely designed to provide a warm space in which to relax and unwind. A wooden planked wall behind the bed stands in contrast with the black upholstery of the headboard and the white bed linen. A black-and-gold side table complements an Aztec-style rug on each side of the bed.
The master bedroom features a private balcony, perfect for sipping coffee or a glass of wine while drinking in nature. The en-suite also highlights plenty of wood and patterned walls, while natural light emanating from two skylights above the shower intensifies the bathroom’s brightness.
Since the children’s bedrooms are designed in accordance with their personalities, they offer appealing character stories. One has a gold canopy bed flanked by two carved-wood side tables. A plush purple sofa at one side of the room offers a cosy nook to indulge in books and music while enjoying the scenery outside. Its large floral carpet makes the room feel fresh and lively like the outdoors.
The elder daughter’s bedroom is similarly bright and spacious. With a beaded hanging light above the bed, dream-catchers dotted around, and a huge painting of horses on the wall above behind the headboard, it has a free-spirited charm. A rattan egg swing drops from the ceiling beside a window that offers a pretty view of the lake.
The son’s bedroom is kept minimal with grey walls and a dark carpet. Overlooked by a large geometric painting of a wolf, the frameless bed has blue fabric upholstery and a bold red-and-blue quilt. The study next door is a shared space for reading and working that also offers amazing views of the great outdoors.
Indeed, each room and space in this stunning lakehouse is visually connected to the surrounding landscape, enabling the family to bask in pristine nature when they tire of stressful city living. It is the ultimate retreat for connecting with nature and reconnecting with oneself and loved ones.
