In late June, the rocket-powered Virgin Galactic 01 was released from its carrier plane and propelled itself to the edge of space, reaching an altitude of 52.9 miles and a top speed of Mach 2.88. It then entered suborbital space for about four minutes. The journey was historic as it heralded, perhaps, the dawn of mass commercial space flights – or space tourism.

Other adventurers have paid to go to space before this voyage, but these trips tended to be piecemeal arrangements and cost millions of US dollars. The Russians, for instance, have long entertained fee-paying space jet-setters, and Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, who made his fortune via e-commerce and was once a drummer in a punk-rock band, famously went to the International Space Station at the end of 2021; he now aspires to fly to the Moon. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has also sent wealthy businessmen to the space station.

Blue Origin, the private space travel company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, is another competitor of Virgin Galactic. It has already taken customers into the final frontier, though there have been no flights since last September as its craft developed nozzle failure. Operations are expected to resume later this year.

After its successful first mission, Virgin Galactic has now rolled out bolder plans; the Galactic 02 commercial spaceflight for private astronauts is scheduled to commence this month and deliver monthly jaunts thereafter. This is the culmination of a nearly two-decade vision by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dream trip</h3>



Since establishing Virgin Galactic in 2004, Branson has reportedly spent a fortune in his ambition to get mass space tourism off the ground. Last year the company reportedly made a loss of US$500 million and accrued just US$2.3 million in sales. Indeed, Branson’s wider Virgin empire was clobbered by the impact of Covid-19 and at one stage he feared all may be lost.

But Branson is a driven man. He conquered space himself in 2021 on a test flight, and prior to the Galactic 01 inaugural trip, he said: “I’ve always been a dreamer. My mum taught me to never give up and to reach for the stars.” He later affirmed: “Space does belong to us all.”

Commercial flights were originally due to begin last year. However, the process was delayed following an investigation into the Virgin craft deviating from its designated airspace on ascent during a July 2021 flight.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Weightless coup</h3>



After the successful completion of test flights in May this year, the first fee-paying crew members to board the space plane were three Italians who used the voyage for research purposes. They conducted experiments involving the likes of radiation and materials science. Only one, Italian Air Force Colonel Walter Villadei, got out of his seat and fully experienced the joys of unrestrained weightlessness at the apex of the flight, unfurling an Italian flag. The other two remained strapped to their seats.

The Italians later issued a statement that the mission had allowed them to carry out their first suborbital research experiments, affording a preview of what scientific discoveries may result from reliable access to space. It is these kinds of sentiments that advocates of space tourism have long used as justification for the vast expenditure and outlay of resources involved in the dream of ordinary (well-heeled) travellers rising to the stars.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sky-high price</h3>



The cost of a seat on a Virgin Galactic voyage has soared to US$450,000, a considerable markup on $200,000 put down by early enthusiasts. There is reportedly a backlog of 800 tickets for Branson to honour on its anticipated monthly voyages. Blue Origin tickets for suborbital flights are typically priced between US$200,00 and $300,000, with outlays much steeper for those looking to jet into orbit.

David Cullen, Professor of Astrobiology and Space Biotechnology at Cranfield University in the UK, believes normal supply and demand will affect the long-term pricing structure of space travel. More broadly, the onset of mass space tourism involves a myriad of implications and ethical dilemmas, and he and his team at the British postgraduate public research institution have been considering how biology and space engineering come together in a diverse range of situations.

It is a natural human instinct to seek the unknown and reach places few have ventured, be it the deep sea, high mountains and now the wonders of space. Cullen believes the main attraction of space for tourists joining the current suborbital flights is the brief period of weightlessness, along with spectacular views observed from the spacecraft window.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Flight risk</h3>



Such out-of-this-world experiences pose a certain element of risk. The recent catastrophic implosion of the Titan submersible on its mission to observe the wreck of the Titanic brought safety considerations of adventure tourism into sharp focus. The vessel that went down was uncertified.

Naturally, some observers will express concerns about space tourism; it is a field lacking in government regulation. Passengers on Virgin Galactic are required to sign a pre-flight waiver acknowledging the risks.

Cullen stresses that suborbital space flights (those that cannot achieve the velocity needed to circle Earth) have decent safety standards, but his optimism comes with a caveat. “The technology is clearly viable given that two different companies have already got proven technologies,” he says. “There have been zero major failures on flights to date viewed as space tourism, but as with all transport, there is a non-zero probability of failures and associated negative outcomes going forward.”

He stresses he would never make a recommendation to a potential paying customer on whether this form of travel is safe, but would educate them so they can make a better self-judgment. He highlights two potential risks: “The failure of the space system and secondly, in the future for longer orbital flights, dealing with biological/medical situations given the exposure to extended space environments.”

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sex in space</h3>



There is the distinct possibility of wealthy travellers wanting to have dates in space or even go on space honeymoons. Indeed, Cullen places romantic rocket trips as high on the list of reasons for tourists venturing into space and suggests providers may need to cater to such desires. He and his team at Cranfield University recently studied the implications of sex and uncontrolled human conception in emerging space tourism, a consideration which he feels needs to be urgently addressed.

“At present, it appears the space tourism sector has not openly considered or discussed the possible risks associated with sex interactions in space and specifically those that lead to human conception,” he says. “Further research is needed to explore the risks of early stages of human reproduction occurring in space environments of weightlessness and increased levels of ionising radiation.”

January this year saw the launch of a new luxury river cruise service, one set to ferry high-end tourists to some of the most mystical destinations in India. Fittingly, Varanasi, where the cruise commences, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world and, perhaps, the most iconic and memorable location in the whole of India.
To the initiated, it is Kashi, the Luminous – the City of Light said to be founded by Shiva, one of the most significant of all the Hindu deities. Regardless of your religious affiliations, it is a truly magical place and one where, for thousands of years, pilgrims have come to wash away their sins in the River Ganges’ cleansing waters.

In all, around 85 ghats (riverfront steps) line the west bank of the Ganges as it passes through the city, making it a popular choice for both devout Hindus taking an early morning purifying dip and for washer folk to beat their clothes. Among the steps are burning ghats, holy sites where bodies are cremated in public, often watched at a respectful distance by boatloads of mourners. Beyond that, many ghats also have their own historical or ritual significance and lingam, a symbol of divine generative energy.
Overall, the best time to visit is dawn when the early morning sun rays light up the myriad temples and ghats while pilgrims perform puja (prayers). Alternatively, dusk offers an ideal opportunity to watch devotees at worship, with viewing these mesmerising daily rituals from a passing rowing boat one of the quintessential Varanasi experiences.

The city itself has more than 700 temples and is a maze of alleyways, with many day tours available for those who want to take in many of the special sites the city has to offer as possible. Particularly popular are the confined alleyways of The Old City, the most famous attraction being the Vishwanath Temple, the main Shiva sanctuary that features 800g of gold plating on the tower and dome. Non-Hindus can climb surrounding buildings to see the gilded dome. Another busy temple is in the south of the city &#8211; the monkey temple – and is home to hordes of red macaques and is dedicated to Durga, an exceptionally fierce goddess.

Varanasi also boasts excellent dining opportunities, including some of the best Indian food around and a wide variety of European dishes. Of particular note is the Darbhanga restaurant, which is set just inside the Brijrama Palace Hotel, a structure with striking architecture along the banks of Darbhanga Ghat. Its most popular dishes include palak chaman (paneer in spinach and spices) and allot chaat (fried pieces of parboiled potato mixed with chickpeas and chopped onions, and garnished with spices and chutney).
For a more informal snack, tucked away in a narrow side alley in the Old City is Blue Lassi, a famous hole-in-the-wall yoghurt shop that has been churning out every kind of gorgeous fruit-filled lassi since 1925. The dairy-intolerant, meanwhile, may prefer the nearby Brown Bread Bakery and its singularly fabulous menu.

If you’re more fashion-minded than food focussed, you may also want to prioritise a visit to the Mehrotra silk factory. It can be found nestling in the labyrinth of lanes behind Lal Ghat and has built up a fine reputation for selling quality silk at reasonable prices.
As is the case on any visit to India, visitors are reminded to be wary of unscrupulous rickshaw drivers who will ferry you off to some inauthentic lookalike place (where they get a cut of everything you spend) rather than your preferred destination. Be insistent and you should be okay.
These considerations aside, no one who has been to Varanasi ever forgets the sheer spectacle of this stunning site’s worship and devotion to the Hindu gods. For those left wanting more of India after such a magnificent introduction – and, really, who wouldn’t &#8211; this could just be the first stopping-off point on a luxury cruise, one where far more wonders may well be yours to explore.

On the Maldivian island of <a href="https://www.hurawalhi.com/">Hurawalhi</a>, one gets the sneaking suspicion that every sea critter is in cahoots with resort staff, working to put on a show so spectacular that guests will consider extending their stay in this little slice of paradise.&nbsp;
Below the jetty that connects a string of overwater villas to the beach, a school of skinny needlenose fish greets guests each morning. And if you look out onto the Indian Ocean at about 8am, you’re likely to see dolphins leaping and back-flipping some 50 metres away.
Located in the Lhaviyani Atoll about 40 minutes by seaplane from capital city Male, Hurawalhi is one of 1,190 islands southwest of India and Sri Lanka that make up the Maldives. Only about 200 of those islands are populated, and even fewer are home to <a href="//www.gafencushop.com/coasting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">luxury resorts</a>.&nbsp;
That still leaves plenty of options to choose from, but Hurawalhi’s laidback, small-island vibe and “adults-only” designation make it a favourite among honeymooners and besotted couples both young and old.
Guests can choose between a standalone villa that sits on stilts atop the ocean, or one planted firmly on the beach. The only remaining decision is whether to splash out on a villa with a personal pool, some of which boast a sunset view.

The resort comprises 90 rooms in total, and the island – 400 metres long by 165 metres wide – can be circumnavigated in mere minutes. Yet despite Hurawalhi’s small size, it’s hard to see and do it all in one trip, especially for those with hopes of ticking off all the aquatic attractions: snorkelling, diving, kayaking, jet skiing, windsurfing and deep sea fishing, to name but a few.&nbsp;
Kirsty Ballard, resident marine biologist at Hurawalhi, says the waters surrounding the resort are rich in biodiversity.
“The southern atolls get the whale sharks, but here in Lhaviyani you’ve got a lot of great dive sites for big stuff like grey reef sharks, where you can do channel crossings on motorised scooters and see 50 to 100 of them in one dive,” says Ballard, who grew up on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
For those who’d rather keep a safe distance from sharks and oddly-named filter feeders, <a href="https://www.hurawalhi.com/dining/undersea-restaurant/">5.8 Undersea Restaurant</a> – so called for its depth (in metres) below sea level – is Hurawalhi’s star attraction. Not only is it the largest all-glass undersea restaurant in the world, but the food is just as impressive, with Michelin-starred chefs helming the kitchen and serving up surf and turf delights, plus a vegetarian menu that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Also popular among happily coupled holidaymakers is the nearby Dream Island, which can be booked by Hurawalhi guests for two to four hours at a time.
There are plenty of other activities to keep you busy, including a dolphin-watching cruise, sunrise yoga sessions, football, tennis and badminton courts, wine tastings and nightly entertainment ranging from a popular DJ to traditional Maldivian music performed by resort staff.
But what truly sets Hurawalhi apart as a top honeymoon destination is the rare luxury of relaxation. Staff are genuinely friendly and attentive, and while the amenities provided are no doubt five star-worthy, it comes with none of the pretentiousness that can be felt at similarly-rated establishments.
“Carefree is the way to be,” says Mohamed Solah, the resort’s director of operations. “We encourage guests to go without shoes and they don’t need to dress up, which is a luxury in itself. Normally, in your day-to-day life you have to make sure everything is well thought of beforehand, but here you can enjoy an easy life.”

As a result of climate change, rising sea levels threaten to sink these pristine islands – although there’s no consensus on the likelihood of this occurring.
One thing is for certain, though: Hurawalhi, where the serene verges on surreal, is a once-in-a-lifetime trip – unless, that is, you’re anything like the repeat visitors who have come back two or three times since the resort opened.
“I have seen so many people who come here and say, ‘OK, Maldives can be crossed off the bucket list,’” Solah says, “but then they get addicted and keep coming back.”

Son Doong Cave, Vietnam
Son Doong has only been open to the public since 2013, and fewer people have stood inside it than have scaled Mount Everest. Getting to the cave itself won’t be easy, but it’s worth the effort. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
This charming city is just the ticket for those looking to detox both body and mind. Head to La Gruta Spa’s hot springs, followed by a steam bath in a temazcal (sweat lodge). For a true fiesta experience, visit the city during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on 1 November. Don’t miss the Spanish colonial churches and cheerful shops lining the cobblestone streets.

Madikwe, South Africa
Despite being the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa, Madikwe is still somewhat of a hidden gem, making it an ideal spot to embark on your own private safari. Lapland, Finland
Lapland, the country’s northernmost province, is truly a winter wonderland. Guests can watch the aurora borealis from the comfort of their glass-roofed igloo, or through the window of a cosy log chalet. Komodo National Park, Indonesia

We couldn’t pick just one city in Malta, but luckily, this archipelago nation in the Mediterranean is small enough to see it all. Malta boasts historic sites, ornate baroque architecture, crystal clear waters and sunny winter days. Its capital, Valletta, was designated a 2018 European Capital of Culture by the European Union, meaning it will host a series of community events throughout the year.

This Central American paradise is a good fit for those looking to relax or indulge in adventure sports – or some combination of the two. Visitors will likely spot some wildlife while zip lining through the rainforest, or while hiking around Arenal Volcano (it last erupted in 2010 and has since been dormant).
