<p>Auarter of the world’s population may suffer from social isolation and loneliness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Alarmingly, this epidemic of solitude now appears to be affecting the younger generation at a higher rate than the elderly. Whatever age it strikes, its prevalence has dire implications for wellbeing, both physically and mentally.</p>

<p>WHO points to the potential for early mortality increasing by 14 to 32 percent among those who are lonely and socially isolated, and likens the health risk to that posed by smoking, excessive drinking or physical inactivity. Increased instances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, as well as depression and the onset of dementia have been noted.</p>

<p>The organisation created a Commission on Social Connection in 2023 to raise awareness of loneliness and social isolation as a global public-health priority. Its experts believe the pandemic was instrumental in highlighting the importance of relationships and that these social connections are the foundation of well-functioning families, communities, societies and economies. Their aim is to ascertain the nature of the problem through global evidence on interventions to reduce isolation and loneliness, and make the case for taking action, succouring support and implementing proven solutions.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dementia danger</h3>



<p>The risk of cognitive decline puts this perilous issue into perspective. While noting the subtle difference between the two conditions, the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK highlights how both loneliness and social isolation can elevate the chance of getting dementia. Loneliness is how a person perceives their circumstances. It is possible, for instance, to be in a crowded room and feel lonely. Social isolation, on the other hand, refers to whether a person lives alone and how often they see their friends and are involved in social and community activities. This isolation itself could be a direct cause of dementia, though physical inactivity and depression may also play a part.   </p>

<p>A nine-year study of participants aged 65 or older, which was described in the <em>Journal of the American Geriatrics Society</em> in 2023, found the risk of developing dementia to be 27 percent higher among socially isolated older adults compared with those who were not socially isolated. One of the study’s researchers, Alison Huang of the US National Institute of Aging, noted that older people may live alone, have smaller social networks, and limited participation in social activities. She suggested that having fewer opportunities to socialise may decrease cognitive engagement and could contribute to the increased risk of dementia. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Communication disconnect</h3>



<p>Interestingly, a study published a month earlier in the same journal indicated that older people (aged 65 and above) who used modern technology to communicate had a reduced risk of social isolation. The use of mobile phones and computers for texting and emails was found to lower the risk of social isolation by 31 percent. Researcher Mfon Umoh of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine commented that basic communication tools can protect older adults against social isolation and its significant health risks, and felt encouraged by the fact that simple interventions to combat social isolation may be meaningful.</p>

<p>Modern communication technology could be a double-edged sword, though. Some commentators blame the proliferation of smartphones and excessive use of social media for the marked rise in loneliness among people in their 20s in Europe, the US and probably elsewhere. As WHO points out, it is not just older people who are affected by social isolation – anyone, anywhere, can be lonely or socially isolated, and suffer all its serious impacts.</p>

<p><em>Financial Times</em> columnist John Burn-Murdoch has linked the declining mental health among young people in many parts of the world to time spent alone and its associated lower life satisfaction and levels of happiness. In his eyes, the chief culprit is the pervasive use of modern technology, and he believes young adults have a sense of powerlessness: they are aware of the problem but cannot stop idling their time away. American journalist Derek Thompson of <em>The Atlantic</em> has coined the phrase “the anti-social century” to describe this situation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Social saviours</h3>



<p>The flip side to all this gloom is that there are considerable health benefits to having a vibrant social life. According to a <em>New Scientist</em> report, studies have shown that being part of a non-digital social network could reduce your risk of premature death by 30 percent. For those living alone, such connections can help soothe life’s stresses through emotional support and practical means. Even such mundane activities as giving a friend a lift to see the doctor or helping with childcare may prove to be a lifeline.  </p>

<p>There is also an evolutionary throwback as to why being socially connected is so important. Our prehistoric ancestors needed to stay in groups to reduce their chances of being attacked by predators. The bodies of those who were alone may have adapted by producing inflammatory chemicals that reduce the chance of infection from injury. In the past, this may have had the beneficial effect of increasing short-term survival rates, but nowadays the presence of such chemicals in the bloodstream is more deleterious – they could increase the chance of a stroke or heart attack.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Relationship inhibitors</h3>



<p>Given the importance of social connections for health and wellbeing, it is baffling why some people don’t put more effort into building stronger, more meaningful relationships. Researchers are now throwing light on this conundrum. In his book <em>The Laws of Connections: 13 Social Strategies That Will Change Your Life</em>, David Robson outlines the psychological biases that can sabotage our social lives. He points to research by Erica Boothby and Gus Cooney that suggests people can be too preoccupied with thinking they have made a bad impression and are overly pessimistic about their ability to connect with new people. Boothby and Cooney have dubbed this social-interaction inhibitor – whereby people underestimate how much another person liked them – as the “liking gap”.</p>

<p>Other psychological barriers to social connection are also being discovered. Ultimately, says Robson in the <em>New Scientist</em>, many people are afraid to converse with others, not realising others would welcome the chance of doing so.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fostering friendship</h3>



<p>Research carried out by Maya Rossignac-Milon at the University of Navarra in Spain highlights the importance of developing a “shared reality” in fostering strong social relationships and new friendships. This is where trust is built up through seeing the world in the same way as the other person. This sense of shared reality becomes relevant when considering close friends, romantic partners or passing acquaintances, and it can be smoothed by sharing intimate thoughts or even worries at work.</p>

<p>Another good technique for building friendships is to show gratitude and appreciation of others. Many people hold back from doing so.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Power of solitude</h3>



<p>Another side to the coin is that not all time spent alone can be considered a bad thing. Being alone can have its upside, aiding the likes of emotional relaxation and creativity. In their book <em>Solitude: The Science and Power of Being Alone,</em> Heather Hansen, Netta Weinstein and Thuy-vy Nyguyen explain how beneficial moments of solitude can be, and how vital they are for health and wellbeing. Indeed, they postulate that alone time may be essential for a balanced, happy life.</p>

<p>In a study involving thousands of participants in the UK, the researchers found that having a psychological distance from people, though not necessarily a physical one, can help free you of others’ expectations and be very relaxing. In addition, a “non-fearful” preference for solitude – that is, time spent willingly in social isolation, balanced with moments of interaction – is key to fostering creative thinking.</p>


Lonely Planet: Social isolation is on the rise and can be as dangerous to your health as smoking


<p>Sardinia has a long history of viticulture, but its reputation within the wine community has only recently borne fruit. The wooded, mountainous island off the west coast of Italy offers a myriad of microclimates conducive to the production of a wide variety of fine pours. It forms one of 20 Italian wine regions and numbers among the most beautiful in the country.</p>

<p>Part of the reason the island’s winegrowers previously flew under the radar is that for many years they made blending wines for other regions, according to Jacopo Bacci of Bacci Wines, a family company with extensive interests in Tuscany and beyond. He says successful wineries have now discovered the potential of the Sardinian terroir and the world is taking notice.</p>

<p>Bacci praises the geographical diversity of the island, believing it offers enterprising producers the potential for picking and developing their wine preference. “What is very interesting about the Sardinian terroir is that you find a large variety of soils and elevation that link to the different exposures, making this land a great place where you can build your wine style,” he reveals.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Isolation thanks</h3>



<p>In Mamoiada, a remote village in the central eastern province of Nuoro, winemaking has been practised for centuries. The locals – many of whom are centenarians in this renowned ‘Blue Zone’ of exceptional longevity – can count the numerous blessings of their location, including the existence of rare heritage vines that date back more than 100 years. The area’s isolation saved it from phylloxera that ravaged the vineyards of Europe in the 19th century.</p>

<p>Among Sardinia’s more than 100 indigenous grape varieties, Cannonau takes precedence here. This red grape flourishes in the rocky granitic soil situated from 400 metres to 900 metres above sea level. There is also a small production of white Granazza.</p>

<p>Bacci echoes the uniqueness of Mamoiada as a hub for winemakers. “It is a small wine area of around 350 hectares located at 700 metres above the sea level. The granitic soil and high elevation give Cannonau a unique finesse and complexity,” he says, while also highlighting the grand old age of the vines.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Individual style</h3>



<p>The breadth of offerings even in such a small area means it is difficult to pinpoint a particular taste profile. “From my experience in the region, the Cannonau from Mamoiada doesn’t have a standardised taste; every producer has his own style.” he explains. “Mostly, the wines are produced from a single parcel with natural fermentation, so it is really difficult to describe a flavour profile for all the region.”</p>

<p>One of the wines Bacci has come to appreciate during tastings in the area is Vike Vike Cannonau di Sardegna. “The wine is a little bit closed at first, but after a few minutes you can get the flavours of raspberry and roses with peppery notes,” he notes. “The vintages that I have tried are all full-bodied but not over mature. The taste is balanced with a good long final and very good tannins.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Age of excitement</h3>



<p>The Bacci family produces its own wine in Mamoiada, Blue Zone, an exciting project which he says is now yielding encouraging results. It has presented challenges, particularly the inability to work the vineyards by machine. Every process is done by hand or using cows, and production is limited to 3,000 bottles a year using Cannonau grapes from different parcels of historic vineyards located at 800 metres above sea level.</p>

<p>&nbsp;“We have decided to respect the old way of cultivating the vineyard, even trying to be more accurate to ensure the vines an extra-long life,” says Bacci. Theirs is a wine style more oriented to freshness, so they harvest early, use spontaneous fermentation to highlight the indigenous flavours, and are light with the wood.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;“At the nose, Bacci Blue Zone has aromas of violets, peaches, oranges and blackberries. Everything is very fresh,” he notes. “The structure of the wine is medium- to full-bodied with a good component of fresh fruit and light spiciness. The finish is fresh, long and slightly savoury.”</p>

<p>His childhood in the countryside of Oxfordshire, England, amid the nurturing gazes of four remarkable women – his mother and three elder sisters – and a father with unwavering resolve shaped Bailey’s outlook on life. <p>His early years were marked by performances that honed his craft, starting with primary-school plays and continuing onto stage roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He starred as Gavroche in a West End production of <em>Les Misérables</em> at the age of eight. Enveloped in a cocoon of creativity and ambition, he headed to the bright lights of greater stages – a path he decided to embrace fully, forgoing drama school in favour of real-world experience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diverse Roles and Dramatic Range</h3>



<p>Bailey’s ascent in the acting world gained momentum through a host of versatile portrayals. He broke into British television playing a university freshman in the comedy <em>Off the Hook</em> (2009) and a teenage Leonardo da Vinci in <em>Leonardo</em> (2012-12), but it was his role as the earnest journalist Olly Stevens in the critically acclaimed series <em>Broadchurch</em> (2013-15) that saw him capture hearts. While that show bolstered his reputation as a dynamic actor, it was the theatre that truly showcased the depth of his artistry.</p>

<p>Appearances in classic plays like <em>Othello</em> (2013) and contemporary works such as <em>The York Realist</em> (2018) served to solidify his status as a leading man of modern theatre. “The theatre is where I feel most secure,” he explains. “There’s a tangible energy from the audience that compels me. I thrive off their reactions.”</p>

<p>It was also in 2018 that Bailey took a significant leap, stepping into the gender-swapped role of Jamie in a new production of the 1970 Stephen Sondheim musical, <em>Company</em>. His award-winning performance dazzled critics, marking him as a swift and nimble presence on stage. “Performing <em>Getting Married Today</em> every night felt exhilarating – it was my playground,” he recalls.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Finding Freedom in Fame</h3>



<p>Yet, it was portraying Lord Anthony Bridgerton in the ongoing Netflix series <em>Bridgerton</em> that catapulted Bailey to global fame, serving as both a blessing and a complicating chapter of his life. The first season (2020) took social media by storm, garnering massive viewership and shadows of adoration mixed with scrutiny.</p>

<p>“Initially, I was overwhelmed by the fame,” he admits candidly. “It felt hard-hitting, like being thrust into this whirlwind. But the support system around me has been vital.”</p>

<p>With newfound celebrity status, he tackled the challenges of public adoration, learning to adapt and maintain a sense of normalcy amid chaos. “I’m really good now at saying no to photos, for my sanity’s sake,” he adds with a chuckle.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Safe Haven on Stage</h3>



<p>As he navigates the glamorous yet complicated world of stardom, Bailey remains firmly rooted in his passion for storytelling and finds safety once again in a return to the theatre. He plays the titular role in <em>Richard II</em>, which runs at London’s Bridge Theatre until 10 May. “The stage has this protective aura – it’s immersive and liberating,” he reflects. “You get to explore life through characters, almost like dress-rehearsing your own existence.”</p>

<p>His collaboration with director Nicholas Hytner marks a significant homecoming for the actor, and one that has been a foundational part of his career. “Nicholas gave me my biggest break as Cassio in <em>Othello</em>. His mentorship has shaped me significantly. I feel like I’m coming back to a safe space where I can grow and shine,” he enthuses.</p>

<p>The internal architectural configuration, conceived by Ryoko Ogoshi and her award-winning Tokyo-based studio, Ron Design, ensures that all the key rooms – an open-plan ground floor and two bedrooms upstairs – are oriented towards the uninterrupted sea view. Calm, warm interiors provide a luxurious haven for relaxation, perfect for unwinding on rainy days when weather interrupts watersports or intimate evenings beside the vast contemporary fireplace.</p>

These colour accents are repeated on the plush rug underfoot and a large painting hanging high on one wall.</p>

<p>Adjacent to the living area, a beautiful open kitchen and dining space form the heart of the home. The kitchen’s sleek, minimalist design is softened by warm-toned-wood cabinetry. It is built predominately from wood in an eco-friendly mindset reflected by the use of natural materials, energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible construction methods. Thus, the design team has delivered a retreat that not only revives the owners’ spirits but also contributes to the wellbeing of the planet.</p>

Tall windows permit natural light to flood in and provide stunning vistas to those chilling within; a balcony lets residents get even closer to the outside spectacle.</p>

The en suite plays a game of contrasts as its black marble floor and walls are at variance with the white and gold fixtures.</p>

<p>The daughters share a bedroom where two adjacent single beds make a cosy space for sisterhood to bloom. Facing the beds is a feature wall with a widescreen television for the girls to relish movie nights in their beds. Pink headboards and bright colours give the room a hint of feminine energy, and the same colour palette can be seen in their bathroom.</p>

<p>Art Central 2023 saw a dazzling reinterpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics through the creation of a three-dimensional contemporary shanshui sculpture from copper wires and natural waste wood.</p>
<p>As the Lead Partner of Art Central, UOB presented Interwoven: Wired Shanshui &#8211; a large-scale interactive ink art installation by Hong Kong contemporary Chinese ink artist Margaret Yeung for the first time at the UOB Art Space. The installation, commissioned by UOB, comprises recycled copper wires and natural waste wood discarded from storms. It transforms the conventional viewing experience of a two-dimensional landscape painting into a three-dimensional contemporary shanshui.</p>
<p>Having spent months collecting her raw materials, the artist dedicated hours upon hours to delicately twist and bend the oxidised copper wires, exuding the same effect as painting lines with a brush dipped in Chinese ink. The upcycling of wood, remnants of typhoons past, resemble hills and mountains from a distance, as if drawn from a classical shanshui literati painting. The myriad colours of the copper wires are a result of variations in oxidation and humidity, emblematic of the wonderful&nbsp;landscapes of the four seasons.</p>

<p><strong>Amazing effect of copper wire</strong><br />
Margaret Yeung has a passion for sustainability and encompasses her ethos into her artwork. Her studio is based in an industrial area in Fotan and she became sad to see so much waste discarded, including copper wires.</p>
<p>Sha says, “So I collect this copper wire and take the copper wire outside and then I twist them into trees. When I twist them, I find ‘oh my God’ I am just doing something that traditional Chinese painters do. They paint trees with brush and ink. But I create trees with my copper wire. Just like an old Chinese painter drawing a tree.”</p>
<p>“Another point is that copper wire when it is oxidized it will turn from a golden colour to dark brown, or to black. So, it is a very amazing effect”</p>
<p>She is a devotee of traditional Chinese landscape painting and wants to pass this rich cultural legacy through the generations and this reinterpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics is one of her ways of doing so.</p>
<p>Yeung reinterprets traditional Chinese landscape painting by embracing contemporary materials and technology of our times. Copper wires and Chinese painting are two seemingly disparate elements. By interweaving them the artist seeks to deliver ‘hybridity’, a peaceful coexistence of the natural and the man-made, of the traditional and the contemporary. The contrasting materials are interwoven in harmony, connecting the past, present, and future of traditional Chinese aesthetics, whilst highlighting the hopeful progress of sustainability and environmental protection.</p>
<p>“That is why I find that my artwork is very meaningful to me, because I am a Chinese artist. But I am now living in Hong Kong in the 21st century. I have to use materials of the times. That is why I reuse material. Because if we don’t have copper wire, we don’t have Wi-Fi, we don’t have lights, we don’t have air con,” she says.</p>

<strong>Trees show the four seasons</strong><br />
Yeung enthusiastically points out that different trees are representative of the four seasons. A heavily oxidized golden leaf tree indicates autumn. “This kind of shape is an old Chinese ink painter’s tree, from the Ching dynasty,” says Yeung.</p>
<p>“Then this is the spring tree, you find that all leaves going upwards. Here is the summer – a tree just like fireworks.”</p>
<p>The trees positioned further back in the background are of a shaded blue colour, or bronze copper blue. “This is winter. They become blue because of the humidity; they turn blue naturally. I cannot control this.”</p>
<p>Her devotion to being a sustainable artist means that she seldom uses acrylic colours for her Chinese paintings on rice paper. She will collect rusted iron and then soak this in water and after about a month it becomes a home-made dark brown ink.</p>
<p>“When I mix them with Chinese ink, you will find very amazing effect on the rice paper. I cannot tell you how amazing it is. That is why I am a sustainability artist!”</p>
<p>Other artists now regularly give her their unused wood which she has used for sculptural works. “That is why it is very meaningful to me, because we can do art again and again and again,” she says.<br />
Yeung collaborated with and guided Guo Yin Kam, a student winner of the 2022 UOB Art in Ink Awards to create the Chinese ink art images for the digital interactive wall of the Interwoven: Wired Shanshui through UOB’s mentorship programme. The audience is invited to contemplate the harmony between man, nature and art through interaction with the installation.</p>
<p>This fits in with UOB’s theme at their booth this year which is sustainability from three perspectives: the environment, education, and D&amp;I, meaning diversity and inclusion.<br />
Further to this, the UOB Art Space contains 18 award-winning works from the 2022 UOB Art in Ink Awards, from calligraphy and painting to mixed media works spanning across the categories of Abstract, and Landscape or Figurative painting. Highlighted among the works featured is Melting Glacier by Christine Lee, winner of the 2022 UOB Ink Art of the Year Award. The artwork depicts a polar bear struggling to survive on a shrinking land of ice, aiming to convey the criticality of environmental protection. This is one of six of the artworks that have animation features.</p>

<p><strong>Roche Bobois of Paris would like to welcome the collaboration of Raphael Navot &#8211; the named designer of the year 2023.</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the Paris edition of Maison&amp;Objet in January 2023, Roche Bobois was delighted to collaborate with Raphael Navot.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Raphael Navot, who was named designer of the year, will present &#8220;The Apothem Lounge&#8221; on this occasion. By carefully arranging an open structure to flood people with light and texture, this impressive piece aims to elicit a visual feeling. It is a big, circular hall that enables visitors to explore interiors without regard for purpose or context, much as on a theatrical stage where the visitors are players.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The <strong>Dot</strong> armchair and the<strong> Parrot</strong> ottoman, both from the Nativ collection, are the seats offered by Roche Bobois in the Apothem Lounge. The 2018 Roche Bobois collection Nativ has organic, natural lines. It begins a conversation between nature and society, accented by geometric accuracy and impromptu forms. The result is jewellery produced from premium materials that combine unheard-of manual artistry with semi-industrial methods.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Raphael Navot, a professional designer was born in Jerusalem in 1977 and attended the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Netherlands. He now resides and works in Paris.
